The E&O is a lovely hotel, but our stay there for 2 nights during Chinese New Year was made to be one of the best hotel stays we've ever had solely because of the excellent service and the friendly staff of the E&O. Several staff members paid special attention to our daughter, and one staff member even held her when she got frightened by the lion dance […] the hotel arranged for CNY in the lobby. This place is a step back in time, but with modern amenities. My "room" was actually a suite, included a living room, huge bedroom and bath and entry foyer. A/C works great (absolutely necessary!) Just spent 2 nights at the E&O for the 1st time in 50 yrs. The last time, in 1962, I got serious food poisoning eating lobster in their main dining room. This time, it was a dream. Great rooms (all suites), great pool, great service, great location. Have the mango chicken salad as an appetizer or main course. The best salad I've ever had!

The E&O, (as it is known widely), is a step back to the British Colonial Days of Malaysia and offers wonderful standards of food and comfort. The staff are attentive and friendly without being overbearing. It's located on the sea front and a short walk to Old Penang Street in Georgetown where there are a lot of bars and restaurants. The town center […] is near and everything is within walking distance. The rooms are suites, with a sitting room, bedroom and bathroom with his and her sinks. They have managed to retain the feel of the hotel while providing modern comforts such a great shower, huge bath and WiFi. Usually when traveling, I do not spend much time at the hotel, but this time, it was hard to drag me away from the pool. The E&O is probably not a hotel for young children, as there is not a lot for them to do at the hotel. For older guests, this is an advantage, plus the price possibly stops a lot of families with young children staying there. The result is that it is wonderfully quiet, with no noisy kids in the pool or in the public areas. We did not eat there except for breakfast, which was very good. Sitting outside by the sea for breakfast was a real treat. A friend who recommended the hotel told me the Afternoon Tea was terrific although we did not get a chance to try it, but will next time. We tried the pool side, outdoor massage - quite excellent. The E&O may not be for everyone, but if you feel like pampering yourself, you can't go wrong. Read more

We stayed at the E&O Hotel at the end of July 2011 and had a wonderful experience. The hotel is beautiful and luxurious throughout. We were greeted by the doorman and escorted through to reception where we were warmly welcomed. As we had to wait a couple of minutes whilst they finalised our reservation they asked us to sit down and served us fruit punch […] and wet towels. The rooms are all suites, very spacious and elegant with solid hardwood floors, a wonderful seating area and old style bathrooms in keeping with the period furnishings. Breakfast was included in our rate and it was just sumptious - so much choice! Butler service was available 24 hours, which we only used to get a different pillow from the pillow menu. The pool was just fantastic, overlooking the ocean. Once you sit down the pool attendant gives you a glass of ice water! We are going back again next year and taking the kids and parents! The hotel feels a bit tired and run down. The service is a bit spotty. The room was OK. Although the furniture felt worn out it was quite comfortable. The bathroom was nice. The location is terrific. The concierge wasn't particularly helpful or knowledgeable.

I love the stay at E&O hotel. To be able to stay in a historical hotel with sea view from my room was a bonus. Both my kids and I love the breakfast buffet spread that has western, chinese, local fare. They even have fresh fruit juice and teh terik which is a rare treat.

Convenient location to attractions in Georgetown. Book the Deluxe Suite instead of Georgetown Suite. Deluxe Suite faces the sea, while Georgetown Suite faces Upper Penang road that s flanked by pubs and night activities, could be rather noisy if you are looking for peace and quiet.

We recently stayed at the E&O and were impressed. we were upgraded to a writers suite as the suite I had booked was above the main function hall over the Christmas weekend and the manager on duty felt it would be too noisy. The bar and pool dining was excellent and we found the peace and tranquility a real treat after visiting the beach and other city […] sights The suites were well appointed and luxurious. The attention to detail was excellent and the staff were very helpful and courteous.The only slight let down was the quality of service at the breakfast buffet. E&O may have been one of the most expensive hotels in Penang, but rate is much lower compared to other historic buildings such as Singapore's Raffles Hotel. This was our first visit to the hotel and chose it because of the historical links to Raffles and recommendations from friends who had stayed there. Check-in was efficient, after the welcome drink we were shown to our suite - category "Straits Suite", on the 3rd floor overlooking the sea and pool area. Rooms were spacious & clean with traditional furnishings. Breakfast […] was served in the Victory annex, plenty of inside & outside tables. Food presentation was surprisingly spartan for this standard of hotel. Omlettes were made with Parmesan cheese & the pastries lacked crispness. Good selection of Asian dishes that were obviously popular but we didn't try. Excellent dinner & service in the 1885 restaurant, varied menu selection. We went for the "Degustation menu" and would recommend it. A pianist provides background music, but only on Fri & Sat evenings. Farquhar's bar is decked out as a traditional English pub, with football shown on the television - I was personally looking for a more colonial style ambiance. The pool area is attractive with comfortable loungers. The staff were very attentive with towels, water & chilled face cloths. There is a small gym, but no spa. Overall we had a very pleasant stay and would recommend it - but it's not the same standard as Raffles in Singapore. Read more

we went to teh E&O hotel with high expectations based on recommendtions of pople who had stayed there in the past. given this and the price of the rooms the hotel did not quite hit the mark, staff were friendly but not very rapid or efficient, diificult to be too critical but just overall disappointng at twice the porice of any other hotel in town
