For a 5 star hotel, the room was a bit shabby. It could have used a rehab. Location was great--right in Amsterdam Central. Close to Central Train Station and tram stops were right outside the hotel.

Upon check-in, the hotel said the rooms were oversold, so they offered a free upgrade to an "apartment". The apartment was well stocked however outside of the main hotel. The stairs were essentially a ladder to the second story - which is scary with heavy luggage - or heels! The apartment was extremely noisy at all hours. The central location of the hotel is very nice. It is within walking distance of the main train station and is a good starting point for site-seeing. There are many nice places to eat in the area. The free internet access from the room was very helpful.

The condition of this hotel can be compared to a $19-per-night motel. The rooms are extremely dark, you have to use your cell phone as a flash light. The windows provide no noise insulation, so between 11pm and 4am you hear very loud drunk/high kids screaming & joking around in the street. To mention , they take %5 everyday as a tax . Although i booked the room as a smoking room, and noone mentioned me that it is not allowed to smoke in the room and althogh i didnt smoke in the room . A security came in to my room without a notice , break into my room and asked to go lobby with him to pay a fine for 150 euros. When i asked him to leave […] my room he traeten me of calling the police . When i insisted he left the room saying to go down and if i dont he would come back again . Of course i didnt go but they charged 150 euros from my credit card . Besides although i put. This hotel exceeded my expectations on everything. We were able to check into our room early, by about 6 hours, and the desk service was very gracious about it. The room was large and had amenities I did not expect: robes, slippers, good in-room coffee, and extensive toiletries including toothbrushes, hairbrushes, razor and shaving cream, and much more. […] There was also a nightly turn-down service so they provided clean towels and tidied things up! The staff was exceptionally accommodating! We arrived early, about 8:30am and they found us a room ready to use. They upgraded us at no charge to an apartment with a balcony. Very lovely room. The 3 flights of narrow spiraling stairs were a bit rough especially at the end of a long day but for a fit young couple, it wasn't too bad. The Bell Captain […] and staff were superb! I loved almost everything about this hotel. If I had to note one complaint, it would be that the bed was a bit too stiff for my tastes. Be careful with the taxi stand, only get in cabs that have been arranged by the hotel. Some drivers aren't licensed and will try to trick you. Great hotel in a great location. There is a brunch served on the first and third Sundays of each month that is not to be missed. Not cheap, but excellent, and served in a beautiful huge dining room with a glass roof and large palm trees. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Don't let the location fool you. If you'd like to be in the middle of Times Square Amsterdam style then this hotel is for you. The property has seen better days and the rooms are dated. Bathrooms are tiny and barely big enough for one person, not to mention the 1980s fixtures and clear need for upgrades. Great location. You just can't beat being in the heart of Dam Square - that being said, the hotel needs a little love. She is looking a little rough around the edges. Also, the flat screen attached to the wall resulted in about 20% of the room - including 1 of the windows - inaccessable. If you are not spending a lot of time in your room and are not using the hotel facilities - great location wins out.
