My cousin and I can't say enough about how wonderful the staff was. They helped us at every turn, always with a smile. The room was the perfect size and kept for us and the location was perfect... close to the sightseeing buses [across the street] and within walking distance to almost everything we wanted to see or do.

My experience with the Protea Breakwater Lodge was mixed. The rooms were clean and the support staff friendly, but one incident in particular cast a pall on my stay. I contacted the hotel reservations staff several days prior to my arrival and told them that I would be arriving after a long 31 hour journey from half way around the world, and would like […] to reserve the hotel shuttle van for transport from the airport to the hotel. I was told by the hotel staff via email that the reservation was set. After arriving on time and exhausted, I roamed the airport for almost an hour looking for the shuttle before giving up and resorting to another transportation option. After arriving at the hotel, I was told by the staff at reception desk that they would look into the mix-up and that an assistant manager would contact me with an explanation. No one ever did, despite additional queries during my 8-day stay. A SIMPLE APOLOGY WOULD HAVE SUFFICED, but the hotel apparently decided that they didn't owe me an explanation.... very disappointing. This is a nice hotel for travelers that won't be staying in their rooms very much. The rooms are VERY small. The family room is tiny. Also, I would suggest adding doors to the showers. It was a mess. The staff was super helpful and very friendly. Would stay again but would request a bigger room.

We spent 4 nights. The rooms are smaller than normal but has been recently refurbished and everything was in excellant condition. Great, polite service and accommodation adjacent to the Aquarium and adjacent to the waterfront. Although elevators are being installed, the delivery of bags to the rooms was handled promptly. Historic aspects of the hotel are interesting and lots of photos of the old prison make for an interesting stay.

It is overall good value for money. only negative points is that there were very strong smoke smell in the room where the management was failing to impose the non-smoking restriction. In addition, it is more noisy than the average hotel.

This hotel seems to get better and better. This was our third stay and we've been happy every time. The standard rooms are not large but they are very well appointed with comfortable beds and lovely pillows. Breakwater Lodge has all the advantages of location without an expensive price tag. If you want a room as a base from which to explore Cape Town and the surrounding area then this is best bet. Hotel service is excellent and rooms are spotless and well maintained. A thoroughly pleasant experience.

Our late arrival at check in resulted in some of us having family rooms in the old block which had an odd layout and was not the room type we had booked . Fortunately we were all moved to the new block the next day. Great location - easy walking to Waterfront and beaches. They are close enough that our two kids took to the South African habit of walking barefoot to and from the Waterfront and the beaches. The front desk staff is very friendly. One issue with the room is hot water in the shower. (I saw this in a post before I booked but hoped the problem would […] be fixed by the time we got there.) The problem is that the water comes out VERY hot and over time gets hotter, almost to the point of scalding. No matter how you try to graduate the dial, the water doesn't cool down. The only way to manage is to keep the water volume very low, this allows the water to be tolerable but it is like using a very low pressure shower. To give you an idea of how desparate things became, our 14 yr old took to showering with her 12 yr old brother to manage the low water pressure and she hadn't allowed him to shower with her for 2-3 years. As a positive side effect, now that we're home they are continuing to occasionally shower together and this has reduced the bathroom fights in the morning dramatically! The restaurants on the premises are very well priced for the area and the food is no worse than the more expensive restaurants at the Waterfront - many of which we found to be hit-and-miss with respect to food quality and service. But this is more like a hostel combined with a backpackers - spartan rooms, no living space, pretty ordinary and made a trip to Capetown a lowlight really. This hotel was just perfect. The location is right opposite bus stop 1 for the city sightseeing bus and approx 5 minutes walk from the V&A Waterfront. The hotel had everything you needed and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. It's individual as well, as the site is an old prison and is now a University as well as a hotel. Great quirky hotel with nice modern rooms; however, my feet were black after 5 minutes walking barefoot in the room as the floor was filthy. The sink was also dirty and blocked. A real shame that the cleaning let down the overall standard of the hotel which is great.
