The hotel itself was fine and the rooms were clean and comfortable BUT there really doen not seem to be much staff at th hotel and the valet service was awful! They asked us to call down 20 minutes before we wanted the car, well almost an hour later we were fighting with the valets about where the car was and that we had tickets to an event that we needed to get to. The valets were not very apologetic either.

Wow....the picture showing the outside of the hotel was misleading. This hotel is in a war zone. Closed up shops covered with graffiti, terrifying people on the sidewalks, the convention center across a very small street with massive construction going on.......horrible. Also, the $20 parking is an undersized lot with cars jammed right next to each other making it impossible to get your car out when needed. The attendant, who doesn't work for the hotel, pretty much ordered us to take a cab because it would take too long to move all of the other cars to get to ours. The hotel and the room were fine but the surroundings made this a terrible experience. Spend the extra $30.00 and stay in a better place......I wish I had read a review telling me to do the same.

We enjoyed our stay a lot. The bed and bedroom in our suite was super but the sofa bed was quite uncomfortable, the telephone in the sitting room didn't work and the airconditioning in the bedroom didn't work (only the fan worked). We didn't want to call maintenance, because we didn't want to be disturbed. But we still enjoyed our stay very much. It was great to have the little kitchen with fridge, microwave and stove and dishes. - The location was wonderful!!

Having the construction block off the direct shot to the conference hotel (where my conference was) meant I had to walk by a homeless shelter which required using a taxi any night that I wanted to stay beyond nightfall. Had I known this, I would have just stayed at the conference hotel since, in the end, it resulted in not saving what I anticipated saving by staying slightly off conference site. Other than that, the stay was great. One caveat, the staff had a "discussion" in an open area about some staff issue with the breakfast folks. In my opinion, that discussion needed to be handled out of the eye and earshot of customers. Richard was the bright part of my stay there - he remembered me, was willing to go above and beyond what was clearly his call of duty to make sure I got what I needed, and was always cheery! The other staff were nice, what you would expect, but Richard was above nice, he seemed to go beyond expectation and have a genuine desire to make sure customers were welcomed!

The room was not spacious (as expected for central city), but they were clean and comfortable. The neighborhood is undergoing rejuvination; the convention center is expanding across the street. The staff was helpful although they had difficulty keeping the 3 computers in working order for the guests. Parking down the street was $20 per day. Jake's was 1 block away and had a very good cheesesteak. The only downside was that there were no stairs to the 2nd floor. Since my wife is afraid to use elevators, we had to take a roundabout way in and out of the hotel.

For starters, there is no mention of the parking rates- which will increase the cost of your daily rate substantially. In addition, if you'd rather not have your vehicle left in a nearby lot (which does not have a gate of any sort), you can opt for the valet parking. When you choose to leave, make sure to allow 20 minutes or so in your planning for the tardiness of the valet company. The room was only minorly tidied after our first night- the comforter was pulled up and the trash cans emptied- even our sheets were not made on the bed. When we asked the front desk for modes of transportation to the Zoo, she responded that she didn't know how to get there and called the concierge- who took 20 minutes to get to the front desk and hand us a brochure with no additional insight into rates, modes, etc. At breakfast, the donuts were still cold from the freezer, the coffee was full of grinds, and the eggs were cold. The hotel sits on a one-way street adjacent to a construction site, so do not attempt to use mapquest directions to navigate from the site, as what we had were inaccurate. Our stay at this hotel will likely deter us from future trips to the greater Philadelphia area.

We loved our stay - though it was only one night - and will definitely go back when we return to Philly for a longer visit. It's right in the heart of the city, so walking to nearby restaurants was very easy. Staff said the area was a safe one for walking at night, and they were right. And the staff was very accommodating. We were there for a few college visits and needed to check out in the morning, but knew we wouldn't be finished with the tours until after 5pm. The staff happily stored our luggage until we returned. Great service.

out of value="5""Neighborhood is intimidating after dark"
Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Apr 13, 2009
After dark, quite a few homeless people and other unsavory types hang around this area, which, thanks to the construction of an expanded Convention Center, has cut the hotel off from the rest of the Center City area. 13th Street is now closed off because of this, so you have to detour a few blocks down a semi-barricaded and narrowed Race Street in either direction to get to the Convention Center/Reading Terminal Market area. Nothing happened to us, but I imagine that less-streetwise visitors will be a bit freaked out by the apparently increasing number of down-on-their-luck folks in Philly (and just just where the hotel is). Once the Convention Center is completed (in a few years?) the Hampton Inn will be more accessible and likely more travelled, but right now I wouldn't stay there again. None of this is Hampton Inn's fault, but unfortunately, the location presently leaves much to be desired. Taking a cab DOES solve the "nightlife" issues, and the hotel itself was quiet and comfortable, with a generous continental breakfast, so I'm NOT trashing the actual accommodations in this review. But it's location is likely the reason it's soooo much less expensive than the other chains in town.
