The castle and the grounds are absolutely beautiful. I spent 1 night here with my sisters-in-law, and because there were three of us, we had to stay in the lodges (we wanted to stay in the castle). The lodges have all the amenities of apartments, which is great if you have your own transportation. We arrived via taxi and sent him on his way. The receptionist was very pleasant at check in, however there is no bell staff and no transportation (i.e. golf cart) to get us and our luggage to our lodge. Hauling luggage on a 15 minute walk is a problem. Had we known this in advance when we made the booking, we would have made sure that our taxi driver waited for us while we checked in. Instead, we had to call the driver back which resulted in a 10/15 minute wait. The food in the restaurant was fabulous. There was a wedding in full swing when we arrived, and it was the perfect setting for such an event. My experience wasn't as great as it could have been because of lack of information in advance. I would recommend that you advise individuals upon confirmation of their booking not to expect hotel services such as porters or transportation service on the grounds, especially if you are not staying in the castle. Given this information in advance would have eliminated this negative experience. Also, if there is a major venue booked, it would be helpful to let the individual guests know in advance that all the public facilities will be booked. We returned to the castle to have lunch before departing and stumbled upon a big group venue which took over all the public facilities. Not expecting to be unable to dine at the castle, we were stuck at the castle with nowhere to eat. Fortunately, the Planner for the venue was extremely gracious and shared his meal with us.

located on its own island a five minute ferry journey brings you to this amazing castle , we were warmly welcomed by a very nice girl on reception who directed us to our fabulous bedroom with a four poster bed complete with chocolates on the pillows ,a huge bathroom with stand alone bath and power shower and a gorgeous sitting room with marble fireplace .we had a drink in the cosy bar before dinner and was served by a lovely girl called nicola who gave us nibbles and told us to relax and enjoy the ambiance of the castle.dinner was served in an old world style dining room and made you feel you had travelled back in time waiters were very attentive especially antonia .the next morning after a huge breakfast of fruit homemade breads and a traditonal irish breakfast we strolled around the castle grounds through a wood that led to a river walk ,it was magical ,cant wait to go back

Enjoying a two week travel vacation throughout Ireland, this would be our first of several Irish castle experiences, and it was not disappointing. The feeling of old world aristocracy and charm had its impact, and the lush and manicured grounds and environment accentuated this castle's history. Located on its' own island made the ferry ride magical. Reception was warm and friendly, and general check-in simplified. Public areas were well maintained, and reflected this historical period. Dining area and the lounge/bar rooms have great historical character, and was a very pleasant ambience. Our room was overly warm due to its location-- (as We were told) but nicely appointed and also well maintained. Fortunately We were able to open the window. Our meal in the Munster room was excellent, and with a well selected wine pairing. Pre dinner cocktails were delightful. All staff assistance was cordial and helpful. True, that additional attention needs to be made with improved renovations and maintenance, however this property does very well considering all factors required to continue making this location a great historical presentation.
"A great location"

I would have to say we enjoyed our one night stay. Our bath had a shower that was interesting but other than that we very much enjoyed our stay. The staff was super and breakfast was very good. If you do not wish to spend a very lot of money, have dinner in town and not at tha hotel.
"Luxurious setting, nothing truly distinctive otherwise"

So I'll admit, the main reason to stay here is to say you stayed in a castle. The grounds and the castle building are very nice, and our suite was that old form of luxury that hasn't quite kept up with the times, fancy furniture but peeling paint on the ceiling. The bathroom was larger than my bedroom at home but the shower being in a claw foot bathtub was impractical to use. The breakfast room and bar were very pleasant places to sit and relax, and there are a couple of nice walking trails around the island for a stroll. Seemed more like the kind of place you have a wedding or go to play golf than just to stay as a hotel guest.
"An excellent stop over"

Unfortunately the weather wasn't marvellous but walks are good and the hotel is excellent. We had an enormous suite which wasn't cheap but we made the most of it. We ate in the bar as they have an excellent choice for children. Rooms are typical for a castle. The hotel is on an island so access isn't easy for going out in the evening. Staff really friendly and a good place to stay ove for a night while visiting Waterford. Across the road from the Waterford crystal centre is an excellent pub, we had an excellent visit.
"Not really impressed"

We were given the Ormonde Suite, which is supposed to be one of the larger and I assume better rooms. For three days I paid just under £450 and it was not even close to being worth it. I had been travelling in Europe the two weeks prior to my visit here and so had stayed in 9 other hotels and all were cheaper and better than this one. My issues include, a TV in the room that did not work, a window frame that had water pouring in when it rained, no plug for the bath. The splines on the taps were also striped so you had to take one tap handle off and then use it on the other valve to turn it on and off. The Toilet bowl which although very ornate had a 10cm chip out of the rim, which is not hygienic and not really safe in a self proclaimed wedding venue where someone may forget to lower the seat and likely get cut. I also during my 3 day stay had to go and request toilet roll twice as there was only one roll in the roll at any given time. On the plus side the staff were good but I for one will not be going back.
"Lovely place to go!"

We had a lovely night in Waterford Castle recently. Fantastic pleasant staff who couldn't do enough for us. Even down to the groundsman re-starting my car the next morning with jump leads as I had left the lights on (silly me!!). Rooms were very comfortable with cosy beds and lovely décor. Nice big bathroom. All spotlessly clean. Views from windows were of spectacular countryside and water - we even saw some deer! We had an excellent dinner in the beautiful diningroom with very helpful and attentive staff. We would highly recommend this hotel and only wish we had longer to stay in order to take in some great walks around the island.
"Great castle hotel experience"

While touring Ireland, we wanted to stay in a castle hotel. This one did not disappoint. Isolated on a small island, you take a short ferry ride to get there. The castle and grounds are very beautiful and we were made to feel very much at home. My husband decided he'd like to play an impromptu golf round, and they were very accommodating. We dressed up for dinner and had a delicious meal. Breakfast in the conservatory felt like stepping back to another world. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Be prepared that once you get onto the island, there isn't much else to do there except the castle, grounds and golf. We found it a lovely, relaxing castle experience.
"Great setting but rooms just OK"

The castle and grounds are great. There is a nice walking path around the island with beautiful views of the river and the grounds. The restaurant was very nice and we enjoyed the meals there very much, including their afternoon tea. If we were to do it over again though, we would ask for a room in the back of the building. We were in the front, overlooking the entrance, and they light up the front of the castle at night, and the big flood lights make it very light in the room, even with all the shades and curtains drawn. Also, it was summer, and with the windows open for fresh air, the sound of people driving up to the front of the hotel, slamming car doors, walking around in the crunchy gravel, unloading luggage, talking, and so on, was loud. My suggestion would be that after 11 PM, they turn off the flood lights and close the drive-up drop-off area to cars.
