Expert Tip. In 1812, King Kamehameha established his summer residence in this area after unifying the Hawaiian Islands and returning to his homeland. Next to the Kona Pier in the center of Kailua-Kona are replicas of his thatched-roof home and temple, with signs that explain their significance.
