"It's better than average but no reliable wifi is a pain"

I had to spend an unexpected night in Cologne since Deutsche Bahn decided to be late for all my connections and they booked this hotel for me which is basically next to the central station. The Kommerz looks a bit shabby on the outside - dare I say, sleazy - but inside, it looks to have had a refit and is actually quite decent, if a little noisy since it’s right by the rail tracks and the bus station - and the room doesn’t have aircon so the window had to be opened. I have no idea how much the rack rate is but I know it’s not cheap as it’s a business hotel, after all. I stayed on the third floor - room 316 with a single bed - and the room was very functional and modern inside. The shower was excellent and there are so many sockets to charge everything. Cable TV was good and the room was a very decent size, with ample space for luggage. It was also very clean: a proper business hotel. Only drawback is that the internet wasn’t free and for €5, you can purchase a Telekom card from reception to act as the wifi though the mobile phone signal can be patchy and frustrating. For breakfast, there was a full range till 10am though the bread was pretty stale by then. Plenty more to choose from though including scrambled eggs and cold cuts, yoghurts and cereal. The Kommerz is very, very handy - a 90-second walk to the station. Staff speak English and are most helpful - and professional at their job.
"Reasonable hotel, good position, good breakfast"

We were given a free stay in this hotel when trains that we had booked let us down: there had been a driver's strike. So I cannot comment on value. But we found the hotel comfortable, with an excellent breakfast; and when we asked they lent us a kettle. Yes there would have been noise if we had opened the window: what do you expect when it's practically on top of the station? But luckily the temperature was just fine anyway. The bed was described as "queen size", in England it would be a standard double bed (admittedly not king-sized).
"Not worth the price!"

I stayed at this hotel for one night on 08/30/2014 while I was in Cologne to attend a trade show at Kolnmesse. I chose this hotel primarily because of its convenient location as I was arriving from Paris via train late at night and needed a hotel not too far from the Cologne central station - Köln HBF. And close to the station, it was! A bit too close, perhaps as I realized later trying to catch some sleep in the middle of all the loud noises outside. As for the hotel, I think the nightly tariff of €114 (~$150) for a single "comfort" room that I paid would easily make it one of the so-not-worth-it list of the hotels I have ever stayed in. The "room" in the room is not a single inch more than you absolutely need it. The single bed size is about the same as your body height. I'm 5'8" and thought it was small and only wonder what a miserable night a 6'+ person would have. The staff was alright, considering we are talking about Germany, here. The biggest challenge was to catch some sleep through all weird noises outside. I heard some rallying cries (whatever those were) well into the wee hours. So much for the "comfort" room. I would not stay at this hotel in future and therefore can't recommend it to anyone unless you have no other options nearby.
"Excellent location but with disadvantages"

Had to stay for a night on a business trip. Our team assistant booked this hotel assuming the closeness of the hotel to Cologne Hbf and our client might help us save some time. It actually did to an extent but the rest is below average. In a nutshell: Average rooms with poor bed & pillow quality and supposedly sound-proof (actually it is of such bad quality so you hear everything from the street also in the middle of the night) for 100 €/night is not worth the money. The highlight was that there was no hot water the whole night and next morning. When inquired, they mentioned that this was an ongoing process and they can't say when we would get hot water. I could see a lot of unhappy faces around breakfast room complaining about cold shower. I can understand their mood as I had the same feeling. The location is excellent and so is the breakfast. However, everything else is below average. I hope one would get better choices for 100 €/night.
"Great Location but couldn't live up to its potential"

This hotel is about as close as you can get to the train station. This positive turns out to be its negative. The good: The staff was very attentive and helpful. The breakfast was very good and the overall cleanliness was good. It's location is great for the business traveler as you are right at the train station and the rest that Cologne has to offer. The not so good: The room had a musty smell and maybe it was the time of the year or something but there was no air conditioning to allow a fan to work. This was not an issue we thought as we could just open the window. However there is no way you can go to sleep with the window open as the train station noise is just too loud. I would call it noise pollution it was that load. So there was little sleep done while there. If you kept the window shut then eventually it would get too hot and stuffy in the small room. My partner had a different room on the 5th floor (502) which was a little quieter but just below his window was the vent stack and he got a very bad odour into his room because of this so he too could not leave his window open. I also purchased the internet to be able to work and it worked 1 night but the rest of the week it continually cut you out and you had to re-enter the password. All those are minor but if you can't sleep then the room is an issue. Like I said the potential was good but it didn't live up to the basic requirements of a hotel room.
"Just okay for a 1 night stay."

Stayed here for 2 nights in March 2014. Everything was basic and acceptable however pillows were too thin and the double bed was small! Bathroom was not the best as it looked like it needed a renewal. It was old. Breakfast was lovely and breakfast room was nice.
"Euroshop trade show"

I stayed at the Guennewig as my base while at the Euroshop trade show in Duesseldorf. A great stay. The hotel is perfect if you just need a clean comfortable room and a good breakfast. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast was a great start to the day. Overall very happy, its not 5 stars but very clean and comfortable.

Repeat visit to this hotel right next to Cologne Hbf, managed to get an upgrade this time to a larger room which was really spacious. Breakfast room has been updated into more of a bar-style, which is a bit of a surprise but the overall price/quality of this hotel sets the standard for in this city. Although the rooms are close to the railway and bus station, they are soundproofed so sleep wasn't a problem.

The most notable feature of this hotel is its amazing location. Previous posts have mentioned this but I don't feel that they've done it justice! It is literally on the doorstep of Cologne HBF train & bus stations (the rooms are well sound-proofed) and a two minute walk from the Cathedral, which can be reached easily by walking through the train station. Other attractions such as the Rhine, the Fruh brewery, EL-DE Haus and countless authentic German pubs and restaurants were also a very short walk away. The rooms were clean and tidy, ideal for a short stay. The breakfast was better than anticipated: a wide choice of food including cold meats, bread, bacon, eggs, pastries, fruit, cereal, olives, cheese etc. There's also a nice little pub next door. A great little find and somewhere we'll definitely stay again. For access to the Christmas markets, this hotel is superb.

Stayed there on a business trip that happened to be when there was a carnival in town. Which meant that they played banging german techno-folk music at the hotel bar until into the night. When I approached the staff about the fact that I could not sleep because of the noise they were extremely unhelpful and I even got hung up on when calling the reception at one point. (Mind you I was very polite). So all in all...don't bother with staying there if you care about customer service at all.
