This old-fashioned Las Vegas hotel and casino is located in historic downtown Las Vegas, 1 block from Neonopolis, 2 blocks from The Fremont Street Experience, and 2 miles from the Las Vegas Strip.
Dating from the 1940s, El Cortez's original building was once owned by mobster Bugsy Siegel. Today, the hotel features a 40,000-square-foot casino with blackjack, craps, roulette, 3-card poker, video poker, sports book, and 1,100 slot machines. Extended multi-race keno allows participants to play up to 1,000 consecutive games with 1 ticket.
363 oversized guestrooms and suites at El Cortez Hotel and Casino are located in a 14-story tower, a 5-story pavilion, or on a walk-up level just above the casino floor. Cabana rooms are located in a building across the street. Tower rooms include separate seating areas with love seats, wing chairs, and coffee tables. Vintage rooms, above the casino, have been remodeled to reflect 1940s décor. Cabana Suites offer 42-inch flat-screen TVs and MP3 docking stations. All guestrooms offer cable TV, coffee/tea makers, and hair dryers.
First of all this is a "senior" hotel, it appeals to older crowds. The price was the only good thing about this Hotel, rooms were old and dirty, bathroom had scum all over, did not want to take a shower I felt I was going to get sick. I stayed at the vintage suites, supposedly at the non-smoking side but the entire floor smell like smoke in the hallway. […] The smell was even stronger inside the room. Booked 2 nights, the first morning the cleaning crew did not let me sleep, they keep ringing the phone asking me when I was going to check out. They got me confused with another customer and move me to another room, to the "Tower" after I moved all my stuff, when I knocked on the door there was already somebody there so went back to the front desk, they apologize and wanted to give me dinner credit I said not enough, they ended up comp 1 night, which i have not seen the credit on my cc. I would not recommend this hotel to anybody. If you want to try the "Old Las Vegas" try the Tropicana, Flamingo or The Palms. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

As a guest in your hotel I didn't l when the restaurant refuse to seat me because they only seat singles a table for two. There were 4 to 5 tables that seated 4 that were not being used. Thought that odd so I went down the street. I an 61 and have never been refused to be seated.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Terrible and dirty!!!"
There was en event going on at the time we were driving through and needed a room last minute. This was the only room in Las Vegas under $150. I would have rather stayed in my car then entered the awful room. The walls are so thin and we could hear everything going on next door. It was by far the worst hotel experience I've ever had!!!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Great prices, not only for room but the table games, cafes on site, and at the bar. Honestly the only thing missing is a pool. We will for sure stay at the El Cortez again at some point I'm sure.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Cafe in casino, food was horrible, old brown lettuce for food and manager felt this was okay to serve as long as one got sick from it.... Really Never again, stay at anything with EL.... cause its a diaster..Genuine Hotels.com guest review
There was a waitress(skinny older blonde) that waited on us while we gambled that rolled her eyes and acted like we were bothering her. I have never had that type of service anywhere and was shocked !! The other people at the table said the same thing.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I am satisfied with the over stay. I will repeat visit. Although, the old style TV's were a turn off. Most hotels have upgraded to flat screens. My room # was 1014. Other than that. Everything was great...Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great for the money"
I love the Fremont Street area, and this place can't be beat for the $$. It's a 2-block walk from the Fremont Street Experience, so it's off the beaten path. The casino is quieter, and the slots tend to be a little looser, so if you're looking to gamble without a lot of "eye candy" or competition for seats this is a great place. My only issue with my […] 2nd floor "Vintage" room is that despite it being non-smoking, the distinct smell of smoke from the casino below found its way in. Wasn't a huge bother to me because the smell of smoke permeates everything in Vegas. The "Vintage" rooms are dated and can only be reached by staircase, but nothing about that bothers me. Maybe my expectations are just lower in Vegas . . . I really just need a place to sleep. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"What a disappointment"
We were put in a room on the second floor in the back with no elevator. The back stairs to the room is a service stair, which smells and is dirty. The controls to the air conditioner does not work and the room is freezing cold. We had to turn it off, but sometimes it won't turn off also. The whole place reeked off cigarette smoke, from all the smoking […] being done in the gambling rooms. Would definitely not recommend to non-gamblers wanting to have a pleasant time in Las Vegas. "We love the El Cortez!"
If you're after the Ritz you won't like the El Cortez but for me its like Cheers. I really like the staff and the dealers, and the rooms are comfortable. El Cortez is my favorite place for a stay-cation. I'm a local, and I stay once or twice a month to get away from home. It's not fancy but it's my kind of place to hang. The tower rooms are pretty nice […] for the price. You can't beat it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Clean, no frills, right downtown"
Right downtown, which I liked. Rooms clean, comfortable, but no frills. The hotel restaurants didn't tempt me, so I ate elsewhere.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

I was not impressed with the neighborhood. Check In took about 20 + minutes. If I had to book again I would because they don't charge for parking or a resort fee like all the other hotels.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"El Cortez Gave My Room Away"
I checked into the El Cortez at 2:00 pm and had a Vintage room. The room was big but dated. However, it was clean and quiet. I left to walk around and then ate dinner. Upon coming back to my room around 4:30 pm there were 2 duffel bags, a laptop computer, and money sitting on a table in the room. I gathered my items, went back down to the check in desk […] and after much discussion as to how this could or could not happen I was reassigned to a tower room and given a $25 food and beverage credit. The new room was big but dated as well. The A/C would not regulate the temperature so it was freeze your butt on or just turn it off. The hallways were noisy with people back and forth until 3:00 am but once the people got in their rooms it was super quiet. The food at the restaurant was good for the price. Management did apologize for the mistake but never did provide me with a reason as to why my room was given to someone else with me still assigned to that room. I would look elsewhere due to the safety concern. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Excellent value for those just looking for a place to sleep and clean up. Really enjoyed the convenience of walk-up access and exit to parking garage from door near my room.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was a good price. They placed us in 'The Pavillion Tower', it gave me the feeling of a motel. I didn't feel safe since it's not inside the hotel. It is above the parking garage. The hotel was nice...just make sure they don't put you in that tower! Good Luck!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Right near the trendy Bars and Clubs."
The El Cortez was more than I expected. Great value and and close to the cool bars and clubs. Pleasently surprised. The only negative was no pool to hang out at. The staff said they have a sharing agreement with another hotel but I just was to busy to check it out.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Won't be staying here again...."
CONS: rooms looked like motels, a/c vent leaking water, stained sheets (urine?), cigarette holes in blankets, small bathroom (privacy to toilet & shower only- sink outside), bathtub creaking badly, noisy street, noisy/creaking footsteps above, noisy neighbors, room gloomy & dull colored, annoying elevator card key access, small confusing parking lot, […] not-so-friendly front desk (never smiled or greeted us), and i think it was haunted. PROS: beds decently comfy, small couch ok, flat screen tv (some rooms), refrigerator (some rooms), hairdryer (some rooms), a/c kept room cool/not noisy, small window in bathtub, got room upgrade (although felt more like a downgrade- see CONS), somewhat close to fremont street, check in 2pm, check out 12-1pm- front desk told me (although rules state 11:30am). "Thought it would better"
At first sight, it's an ok hotel. But after checking in and leaving our bags inside our room, we took the elevator down to the casino. The elevator broke, we were stuck inside for approx. 45 min. When we got out, security was waiting for us stating that we broke the elevator and that we would be billed for the repairs.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Best hotel ever!"
We stayed at Cabana suites and it was the best hotel experience ever! The whole building is new, the suite was wonderfully decorated, big, comfortable and clean. The staff was very kind and helpful. We got there a bunch of different coupons so we tried everything that hotel offers. Portions and food at Caffe cortez and Flame steakhouse were huge and […] tasty. Area around the hotel is quiet and peaceful, but close to everything. I would definetly recommend El Cortez and if I ever return to Vegas, I'll stay there again! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"The room was very large and clean."
Everyone was very helpful. We asked for a fridge and received it within 15 min. Extra blankets no problem. A nice large fenced in parking lot for our U Haul truck with a 24 hour guard. In fact, for us to get in the Bellboy had to open the gate. It was an excellent stay and I would highly recommend it. The rooms were worth the $20 that I paid not anymore than that. The toilet didn't flush properly, the door to the bathroom was very loud and didn't close at all no matter how hard you banged it. U can also hear other people in their rooms attempting to close their bathroom door lol kinda funny at he moment. You can actually see under the room door to […] he outside hallway... Scary. I could hear everything going on in the other rooms... Gross. The carpet was sooooo stained I was grosses out for my cute heels to even be walking on it. We didn't even sleep there. We just drove home at am. Won't stay at their vintage rooms again. However there cabana suits are really nice, super clean and modern decoration. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very nice rooms, but horrible house keeping!"
The rooms were a lot better than we had anticipated, but we only had room service 2 out of the 5 days we were there. Even after complaining to management, there was no follow up on their promises. The clerk at the front desk at the cabana suites was much more interested in her personal phone calls than her guests.Genuine Expedia guest review

nice place for a fast getaway to Vegas on a short notice older hotel but well kept upGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We have previously stayed at the El Cortez. We like the convenience of the location and with the knowledge the hotel is somewhat aged, the accommodations are acceptable. It is a several minute walk to the Fremont Experience. We stayed in the cabana section this time and although brightly colored painted, the rooms were nice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"El Cortez is perfect for me."
I'm particularly pleased to see Jackie and especially that the property is targeting people my age where other Fremont Street properties are much noisier because they are targeting a younger clientele. I see too many employees standing around talking, sometimes […] loudly, instead of warming up customer's coffee, etc. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The hotel was great except for our room not being cleaned twice during our 5 day stay. Fortunately we are very clean people and our room wasn't a complete disaster and towels were brought up when we requested them. We had a severely handicapped elderly woman with us when we stayed and when the front desk woman was checking us in, she placed us on the second floor which does NOT have an elevator, only three flights of stairs. "Great room, microscopic bathroom - great place"
The room was pretty big, actually. I got the 2 queen room in the tower and was surprised that there was even a sitting area in the room. Beds were fine, and the room was very clean. The bathroom was the smallest bathroom in any hotel I've ever stayed in, though, so girls might not be too impressed. Either way, we stayed because of its proximity to downtown […] and it was the perfect location. Highly recommend and would stay here again for sure. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Showcases the Jelly Beans of the Old West"
First the purchase, When you register online, you get an option to upgrade to the cabana suite. This option gets you a free wi-fi that is charged for in the tall tower above the hotel. Other amenities in the cabana are fresh fruit in the lobby and gym, and jelly beans, or starburst soft candies, or red hots candies. And each room had an air conditioner, […] which is much better than the central units that blow air and make some rooms feel as cold as a meat locker. The elegance of the hotel really comes from the decor. The wood panel and western style chandeliers make the place feel like an old saloon in a John Wayne movie. There is an all night restaurant which serves a beer and california burger with chips for $5.00. There is a chef salad available, but there was no rice or main dishes available at 2 am. There is however an all night keno theatre for a $0.40 play and a race book which offers good programs. The attire is very working class and old jeans and light t-shirts are not unusual. Young clientele in their early 20's are found in numbers. There is a free shuttle to get you back to the airport. It stops at 2 pm on Sundays. It does not run on Saturday. And the hortel is along the tour bus route. Get the Expedia voucher for the Hop-OIn hop-Off (Big Bus) open top bus tour. This tour takes you to the Tropicana, the Stardust, the Bally's, the Wynn hotel, and the rest of the strip as well as the museum of Atomic Testing.. Its $38 for a two day bus pass. "Great place to stay if you like old town Las Vegas"
Stayed at the El Cortez Cabana Suites. Great retro boutique hotel right in the middle of old town Las Vegas. Kind of a sketchy area around the hotel but Cabana Suites are very nice. Had a problem with my key card getting in the front door. Apparently other guests were having the same issue. Stayed for 4 days. Didn't get maid service the second day because […] they were short staffed that day. I got some extra soap from the desk manager so it wasn't an issue. Friendly staff and clean comfortable room made up for that. The Cabana Suites are located right across the street from the parking garage and they have a security guard on duty 24 hours a day at the front door. Café Cortez is one of the best deals in Vegas! Great food, large portions and cheap prices. Prime Rib special with soup/salad, potato, dinner roll and a drink for less than $11! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
