Great location for walking the strip. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. We enjoyed our stay.
"Great Price, Poor Hotel Upkeep"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 5, 2012
The room was a steal at the price, and it was right on the strip. Only complaints /i had were poor lobby lay-out (had to ask where the check in desk was) and poor room and elevator maintenance, the elevators shook so bad i thought we could plunge to the bottom at any moment.

"TI Las Vegas"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 5, 2012
Hotel accomodation were OK, been Treasure Island, was expecting better accommodations, but hotel is showing his age and use. Got surprise when we check in with a mandatory fee for resort, that seen like I miss reading about when I pay, was $29 per day, but since I book so early was charge $22 a day,I try to explain we was not interested on using pool or gym since we were there for convention, but was explain that fee was not a choice and we have to pay, so we have to pay 5 days more over the price of the room. Also I ask for handicap room and they told me our room was handicap accesable, but we have a tub and no shower.

The neon, twinkling lights of vintage Vegas are on full display downtown at the Fremont Street Experience, a five-block area that features a few of the city’s longest-operating casinos, a pedestrian mall, and an overhead electronic canopy for laser and light shows. Downtown Las Vegas also houses city hall, the 18b Arts District, and a large outlet mall.

"Quiet, clean, steps away from fun on Fremont St"
I grew up in Vegas when us youngsters would cruise Fremont St. in our cars. I've been gone for over 30 years but come back to visit family. First time EVER booking a hotel on Fremont vs the Strip. Loved it. Still within minutes of the strip WITHOUT all the traffic and panhandling. Rooms were small but updated. Super friendly staff and hotel guests. […] Did have a choice of staying at the connected sister property (Main Street) for the same price, which I may do next trip (beautiful old west feel, rich woods, chandeliers, larger rooms). Will definitely will choose downtown Fremont again! Read more
"California Hotel LV near Fremont"
The bed frame and mattress in our room with one of the queen size beds was broken, not badly for me to call maintenance. Great hotel stay anyway. Bell service was excellent.
Clean hotel with no resort fees. I will stay here again
"No noise from Freemont Expierence at California"
hotel...unlike the hotels (G.Gate, LV Club, etc) that are located on the Freemont ST. Experience you do not have to listen to that RACKET all night long (especially LV Club & G. Gate)....California is far enough away that you do not listen to those horrible bands....another plus to the California is that it is like staying at a hotel in Honolulu; lots […] of Islanders (staff & guests) to give it that isle flavor....too bad you have to pay for the internet (9.99/day), but nobody & nothing is perfect...will stay again at the Calif. when opportunity presents.. O,,another plus; when I checked in I asked for a rollway bed; they brought it up to the room promptly & NO CHARGE! Read more

"California Hotel, Las Vegas, NV."
Beds were lumpy. Shower water pressure was lacking, as the faucet to shower switch was faulty. Enjoyed the food! Liked room rate. Enjoyed other rooms in the same hotel on previous visits.
"great adult getaway"
A couples retreat is what we called it, there were 3 couples and we had blast! Downtown area was cool and chill, CHEAP drinks, souvenirs, good local hawaiian food, we didn't win, but we had fun playing roulette, black jack and nickel and dollar machines. It was relaxing home away from home. Although, I did get food poisening from one of the restaurants […] at THE CAL. It was weird because 3other people in my group ordered the same item as I did, none of them got food poisening. Overall experience, we can't wait to return and stay at THE CAL. Again. Read more
"Not worth the savings"
I would give this hotel a rating of ZERO if it was possible. I stayed here on my way to Phoenix from Denver, and the minute I walked into the door, until the minute I left was nothing but inconvenient. I had no hot water in the sinks in the bathroom area. When I told the front desk staff about it, their response was, "if you have hot water in the shower, […] you should have it in the sinks too". Really!?! I have work I am required to send out via the internet every Sunday night, and the WiFi connection, that I would have had to pay for, would not work in my room. The front desk staff told me to go up the escelator, which turned out to be blocked off because it was not working, and go across the street to the bar at the Main Street Hotel because they had free WiFi there. I ended up spending over 3 hours in a Mcdonald's on the strip, eating cheeseburgers so I could use their WiFi to get my work done. This is the worst experience I have ever had at a hotel, and it's worth the extra drive time from the freeway to stay at one of the hotels on the Strip. That is where I usually stay, and will do so every time I go to Las Vegas from now on. Read more
"Nice and clean hotel in downtown Vegas"
The California hotel was great in price and location. The room was clean and quiet. We loved the Redwood Restaurant in the hotel too!

Great place to stay for the price
"one night stay"
This casino/hotel caters to the Hawaii resident. This is evident in the casino. It is also located downtown do there is little to see except for the trashy Fremont Street " experience". That said, the hotel is nicely appointed, clean, and inviting. The rooms are very nice and down pillows and comforters are a nice touch. Highly recommended to those […] culturally tolerant of hawaiiana. Read more

"Loved it....."
I went to Vegas for my birthday and I stayed at the Cal. I chose the Cal because it fell within my price range. My room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was big but the tub was small...lol. But overall I enjoyed my stay at The Cal.
"Great property for the price"
Great location in downtown Vegas. Laid back Hawaiian attitude. Friendly bartenders at the poker bars and dealers at the games. Best cafe in all of downtown!!! Be sure to get the Loco Moco!!! Connected via walking bridge to the Main St. Station, which is a must see if you;re downtown. It's chock full of antiques and is gorgeous!!! Also, the comp card […] is good for California, Main St. Freont St, and several other off-strip properties. Shuttle service several times daily to Sam's Town Casino and to the Strip (Harrahs). Only real downside was that room service was available for breakfast only. Would definitely stay here again. Read more

Enjoyed staying at The Cal. Workers are friendly and the food selection is good too! Not bad for an older hotel.
"The Cal in Las Vegas"
My stay here would have been more favorable if you get what you requested..I had to stay in a smoking room on a smoking floor because there wasn't one available for non-smoking until the next day..

"Great as usual"
The Cal is great. Free WI-FI at the next door Main Street Station (sister property) for guests of both hotels. Great food at low prices. The Prime Rib Special is great at the Coffee Shop, and it includes salad bar and desert for under ten bucks. Steakhouse is also great. Check out is Noon, not 11am like nearby hotels. If you like Hawaii and Hawaiians […] - this is the hotel for you. They have that Aloha spirit. When staying Downtown this or the Golden Nugget are my choices. Read more

great room. I go there for the access to the exotic island food in three cafes.
"California Hotel and Casino - Next to Fremont St."
While the hotel overall was comfortable and very convenient, the Market Cafe was "nothing to write home about." The food and service were only so-so. The primary reasons we chose this hotel was location (right off Fremont street) and the rate. If you're looking for a "bed and a shower" with easy access to Fremont Street, this place is a great choic […] e. Read more

"CA Hotel/Casino"
Poorly maintained. Hair from previous occupant next to sink. Used shower cap in shower stall. Something brown splattered on bathroom wall. Heating/air-conditioning unit non-functional. So smoky, even the "smoke-free" floor reeked like cigarettes. On the other hand, bed was OK. Ironing board & hair dryer worked well.

The restaurants, staff, and casino floor were AWESOME..definitely sdtaying there again! My cousin stayed at the Fremont, and I noticed our room at teh Cal was MUCH more spacious.
it was an O.K ! exprience.

"California Hotel and Casino"
Location is good for Seniors who don't have too far to walk between Casinos. Staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms were satisfactory and clean. Food was good, especially the Hawaiian dishes. Gambling here was soso, I didn't hit anything big but did not lose too much either.
"California Hotel"
I was very pleased with our stay. The room was clean and everything worked. The staff was friendly and answered all out questions about the area attractions at length and eagerly. We got a wonderful rate through Hotels.com, but unfortunately it was only for one night since these was a convention during the weekend and so the rates quadrupled or were […] sold out for the following nights. The only negative thing I might say is that they put a hold for $ 50 on my credit card without advising me they were going to do that, even though the reservation was prepaid and so far the authorization has not been removed even though we checked out four days ago. I definitely hope to stay again at the California! Read more

California hotel may not be four stars but it is a great place to stay for the price, especially if you are from Hawaii.
"California Hotel"
Located downtown, old school Vegas. Staff was nice, room was meh. Got a great rate for the night, couldn't beat the price.
"August 2011"
The Cal is always a good choice. The only real problem we had was with the key cards. They stop working for no reason and the front desk insisted that the dead bolt was set when it wasn't. Most of the staff were friendly, and some were oddly detached from the task at hand (dealers). But the price is right and the Aloha Specialty cafe is very good.
"OK"
I have stayed here many times on business trips and this was the worst experience to date. When I arrived at hotel at 11:00pm I was told I had to wait for my room as they were 100% full - I was shocked that my room was not available at 11:00 pm, to say the least I was tired and not too excited about waiting around...they gave me no additional help other […] than saying to wait which I did for 30 minutes. I guess you get what you pay but I was not impressed. Will not stay here again due to this one instance. Read more

We enjoyed everything including the food. The only problem was dirty trash cans when we checked in I'm sure was just an oversite by the maids they quickly remedy it. overall we like the hotel.

"The California Hotel - great place to stay"
This hotel has very friendly staff and is in great condition. It is in downtown Vegas, and although the hotel is older, they keep it in great condition. I will definitely stay there again. It is not too far from the freeway and the Strip.

great value for the downtown area
"Nice Choice"
If youre looking for a quiet, off the strip hotel with not a ton of frills, this is a nice place to stay. The room was clean and quiet except for the a/c. The rates are very good and the hotel staff was helpful. The tv's in room are older and the screens are not hi-def. I guess we get spoiled by having all hi defs at home.
