Grounds were pretty but the beds were terribly uncomfortable and there is no air conditioning. I understand it is an old building so maybe it is something I can expect.

This is a huge 19th c building that was recently renovated. The architecture is amazing, but the rooms & service don't measure up to the building itself. We called room service & the front desk 3 times, and the phone was never answered! It looked like the cost of renovating the bldg. was more than expected, because the room we stayed in only had primer […] on the walls - no paint! The two double beds on casters were too big for the space because you had to sqeeze between the bed and the wall to get to the alcove with the desk. For those who like to shower, the shower/tub was dangerous. The bottom was narrow and the sides sloped up, so it was easy to loose your footing. Only one small window in the room which made it quite dark. The hall carpeting was dirty, and the walls needed painting. The breakfast was good, but the service was not. There was adequate staff, but they seemed very inexperienced. The dining room was this wonderful massive room with huge bay windows, and floor to ceiling Victorian bookshelves. Really wonderful! The background music should have been something classical. The music during dinner and for each of the two breakfasts was1960's rock -- Petula Clark, The Beach Boys, etc. It was so bad, it was almost funny. It was also surrounded by a prison facility. This old converted manor house is in a delightful country park setting about 15-20 mins north of Bristol if you use the freeway, which is very easily accessible from the hotel. While the staff were everything you hope hotel staff to be, the building itsself, while being gorgeous in its overall appearance, shows signs of wear and tear inside and is […] not as 'fresh' as other properties at which I've stayed. The room was very acceptable, but again there were obvious signs of wear and a few signs of less than complete cleaning - a cobweb or two was obvious and I'm pretty sure that the carpet wasn't vacuumed every day as some of the crumbs we'd dropped were there for a day or two. Although a large very spread out building, access and parking nearer to most rooms was quite convenient. I did get lost a time or two when wandering the corridors trying to find reception. The restaurants were classic 'old world' and the offerings were acceptable but, in my and a couple of other guests I spoke to, somewhat overpriced. The bar was OK but again prices were more than expected for a property of this type. It was a good stay with the staff always polite and ready to help. However, this hotel somehow permeates an atmosphere of 'if you have to ask how much it is, you can't afford it'. Unfortunate but reflected by other guests I spoke with. A great hotel with quality staff and great facilities. The food was also excellent. The location is conveniently close to the M-5, which does mean that you can hear the highway noise at certain points on the grounds. The hotel is surrounded with great trails and contains an arboretum with a fascinating variety of species. Tortworth Court is a stunning old building in a beautiful setting (although the M5 is only a mile away) and good facilities, although expectations should be for country grandeur and not sophistication. Dont expect cocktails, the food is good, but the menu is very trraditional.

We had to be moved to the front of the hotel, because the disco music from a wedding in a marquee at the back of the hotel on the Friday was pretty awful. We stayed for a single night at Tortworth, after we were badly let down by a hotel in Bristol. Although the hotel is much further away it is an easy drive and certainly easy to find. The booking was made very late (23:45) but despite this we recieved superb service, with check in completed very swiftly and we were dealt with by the superb reception […] staff. Our room was huge, very comfortable with a lovely large bed, tea/coffee facilities and a large bathroom. There was plenty of seating, storage and table/desks. Easy for us to get out of our wedding stuff and store this. The wifi was also very good, easy to connect to and provided a very fast connection. Mobile phone signal was poor but this was the same for the area rather than the hotel. Although we arrived very late it was obvious that we could have got refreshments from the bars etc, and even though there was another wedding going on we never heard a thing, and were able to get some much needed sleep. Breakfast was great, and even though we were about 15 mins past the time it closes (10:00) they were more than happy to serve us and even cooked some fresh eggs for my new wife! We loved the place, its a stunningly beautiful hotel and surrounding gardens, and if we werent in the middle of a thunderstorm I'm sure we would have gone for a wander around before leaving. My 1st experience away since my husband died. I was apprehensive as I have MS too. The staff were extremely friendly & courteous & I felt quite at home. Two complaints 'though - my 'disabled room' was a lengthy walk through a rabbit warren of narrow corridors & with my disability I was utterly exhausted on reaching my room. I use a Rollater to walk […] & am totally dependent on it - on one occasion in the dining room the waiter removed it to a corner without a word to me. I cannot walk without it & it also had my medication, my IPad & my handbag in it. He was very patronising when I asked for it back & I felt humiliated by this. The unexciting dinner menu had no prices showing so I was shocked when my very mediocre roast turkey was priced at £18.95. However I would return to Tortworth Court as all the other staff were exceptionally helpful & I imagine the disability problems could be discussed & resolved. The surroundings are beautiful too. The approach along the long drive to the attractive grounds reveals a grand stone pile. There is ample parking. The reception hall and dining rooms are very impressive as is the Atrium Bar with a very high glass roof. Check in was very efficient, but make sure you pick up the code and password for the Wi-Fi, which is also very good throughout the hotel. The […] room was a reasonable size with king size bed. The usual tea/coffee, TV, hair dryer, but also an iron and ironing board, trouser press, safe, and an excellent demisting mirror in the bathroom. Checking out was very swift. The invoice was posted under the bedroom door overnight and assuming it is correct, you just sign it and hand it in or post it at reception. They then forward the receipt by post. Excellent service with no queuing. The only minor downside with this hotel is the seemingly long trek through corridors from reception/restaurant and bar areas to the bedrooms which are contained in a modern two storey extension. However, the accommodation area is quiet and well away from things like kitchen extract vents. Most importantly, the staff were all very professional and very pleasant and helpful. Had to change from double room to twin due to oversight on my part in requesting twin on booking s but this was sorted out quickly and we were shown to room in annex. Agree with some reviewers that rooms could do with bringing up to date a bit but otherwise ours was fine; light and roomy and clean […] with everything we needed with the advantage that we could park very near to it and go outside at the back to have a smoke. Beautiful grounds to wander about in and terrace to sit out on and admire the rose gardens. Good memories of this place from childhood when there would be days out to watch local cricket teams play in the grounds followed by a walk round the magical Tortworth lake nearby. Our visit happily coincided with a time when the lake is open to the public, nowadays the afternoon of the first sunday in every month. Had a fantastic jubilee weekend away, relaxing in this hotel. Great setting in pretty garden and grounds. Grandeur and pretty setting though fairly standard breakfast and rooms with not much character given the building. Overall a very good place to stay even enjoyed a good swim before breakfast in the morning.
