"Sleek & Sophisticated"
Beautiful hotel & rooms. Great location. But...lighting very poor in room & bathroom. No lighted make-up mirror. No towel racks. TP holder in awkward place. Tiny closet - had to take out hangars to fit the few things we were able to hang up but the bar was big and bountiful. Staff very nice & helpful. The city is definitely worth visiting.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"A bonnie visit to the Scotsman in Edinburgh"
The attentiveness of the staff is one thing that they might work on. We asked for ice which was never delivered, we requested a wake up call - it never happened. They weren't quite as focused as we had hoped. Everyone greeted us warmly, we liked the turn down service. They upgraded our room and it was lovely with a great view. The work out facilities […] and pool lived up to their billing - unbelievable. The location really could not be better - North Bridge is in the middle of the Royal Mile. The elevator dropped us off literally at the entrance to the Waverly train station - and the building is beautiful. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Excellent location, great view from the room on Princess street. Excellent food in the hotel restaurant, one of the best! Hotel could do with some upgrades/renovation Looks a bit worn out. Loved it for location, polite service and gymGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Family Friendly Hotel"
Very family friendly. Can't compare with hotels in Paris that did not allow a baby for a room for two! The Scotsman staffs really welcomed our two year old very active daughter. We stayed five nights and it was very comfortable throughout. Highly recommendable for families with young kids.Genuine Expedia guest review
Lovely hotel with lovely furnishings! The couch had a cashmere tartan draping over it and the cupboards looked antique but incorporated modern elements which made the whole room feel very warm and comfortable. The hotel is just 5 minutes away from the Waverly Station and a few minutes away from the Royal Mile and tour agencies. My only minor complaint […] is that there are only 2 slow moving lifts so I can take some time to get in and out of the hotel but hey, I didn't mind waiting as the ambience was lovely and the staff were delightlfully friendly! "Great way to see Edinburgh!"
The service level was excellent. We were upgraded at check in and provided with a roomy and comfortable room, with great bedding and pillows. We were only there one night, and really wished we could have stayed for more. The hotel provided us with complimentary bottled water (which is always an issue and much appreciated) and printed out our airline […] tickets. And the hotel location could not have been better. "Exceptional accommodations & service"
Highly recommended! Not only was the hotel practically perfect, each & every staff person was wonderful. The only issue is that one side of the building is sprinkled with bars and so, even though we were stories above, the loud music & voices went on into the wee hours, waking us. Just request a quiet side. Otherwise, perfect!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Spacious and charming."
Great view from the room, loved the set-up - very spacious and unique (stayed on 9th floor). Lovely staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good Old Traditional Hotel"
The Room they asigned me at first, was not speciall at all. Was rather like an old house. I then moved to another way much better in every sense, with a nice view, although there were some spots on the carpet. The tables with the monopoly cover boards, diminish a lot the quality and position of the hotel. Not nice at all, neither funny.Genuine Expedia guest review
"THE Place to stay in Edinburgh!"
Not only is the Scotsman perfectly positioned around the corner from the Royal Mile, (which would do it for me, as I like to centralize myself and go off for various jaunts), its staff was delightful, its space and comfort are unbeatable and its spa facilities were delightful. (Great massage therapist. Truly one of the finest I've experienced, especially […] when traveling. And if you're a swimmer, pack your suit! Their indoor pool is to die for!) "Treated Royally on the Royal Mile at the Scotsman!"
Form the very first welcome to the last, we felt like royalty, the polite doorman, bellman and concierge as well as the manager all made sure our stay was perfect! I would definitely recommend the location during the Fringe Festival as the location is perfectly situated by most venues and in between the Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace! The dining […] at North Bridge was surprising good and rather exceptional for a hotel dining room, it exceeded our expectations by a lot! The rooms were bright and large! "Location, location, location"
This is an excellent hotel. Its location is top notch. The room was clean if a bit small. The staff was attentive. The remote for the TV showed its age; it was hard to use. It has an excellent pool.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Scotsman was amazing! I was traveling alone, and everyone with whom I interacted was 5-star. I would describe it as the hotel located on the Royal Mile that treats its guests like royalty!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Gothic Hotel Feel & Nothing Fancy! Used only4slep"
I rate this hotel a 4 for Europe standards...due 2 location & size of the room. The room I paid for was a standard room & it looked like an apartment. The room smelled a bit funky. What do you expect from a hotel with a lot of history? The outside of the hotel looks very Gothic, love it. The furniture was outdated. I threw a pillow on top of one of […] the cushion chair & no lie dust flew in the air. Threw it a 2nd time cause I thought I was hallucinating & again lots of dust. The ceiling had water stain & I was on the 2nd floor. Don't ask me “how?” Enter the stairwell, and seen water leaking from the ceiling @ 0 floors... I saw a bucket to catch the water. But although it has these issues, it still looked really nice. As for the staff, I was very pleased with room service & maintenance not so much with the main desk. I dialed 0 to get someone to help with an issue with the toilet. Too much toilet tissue, no good. Anyway, spoke to staff about the issue, they said they were going to send someone to fix it. Came back in the evening and nothing was done. All I seen was a bowl of candy. To make a long story short she said maintenance took a look & said there was no problem. I was upset and told her the toilet was clogd. I found out by maintenance the next day, they leave by 4pm..meaning front desk lied. Anyway, problem was resolved. One thing, i wOuld say to front desk learn to be honest maybe ppl will be more understanding rather then telling customers they're liars. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Scotsman well worth it, but watch out for the heat"
The hotel staff and building were both very impressive. The great customer service from the staff were 5 diamond! Our Concierge Mr. Ross McEwan and the Front Deskman Mr. Phillip McEwan displayed humble yet "spoil you silly" mattitudes that really made our stay there feel as if we were the most important people in the hotel. I'm sure though, that they […] did that to everyone. From the awesome housekeeping showing up in the evening to turn your bed and give you water, to the wait and bar staff, this hotel delivered the best customer service of 4 great hotels over 3 weeks in 4 countries. The lobby bar is both great for talking with the diverse international staff as well as interesting local and international business people and other guests. They really think about all the details. Definitely would recommend it. It would have been made perfect if they would have invested in air conditioning. It seems that both the high quality staff and us, were frustrated that the owners have not yet put it in. During our Summer nights the fan put in the room was a lifesaver, but nothing can replace A/C. We won't stay here again in the summertime without it. All in all, GREAT JOB to everyone that works there! Great building, location and value. The staff and attitudes 2nd to none! To the owners, A/C or else! No 5 star hotel can maintain that rating without it. Your guests shouldn't suffer on vacation. Great Job to the tremendous staff at the Scotsman for making up for it Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"One of my favorite hotels of all time"
I just returned from a whirlwind 2 week vacation that took me through Paris, London, Winchester and finally Edinburgh. The Scotsman hotel was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in and I've been in some nice ones including several Ritz Carltons. The hotel is beautiful, the rooms are big with some very cool unique features but the staff made this […] place great. They were attentive, professional and very helpful. The location can't be beat. THE LOCATION IS TOP NOTCH. VERY CONVENIENT TO ROYAL MILE AND TRAIN STATION. IVOR, A CONCIERGE, WAS VERY HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY. HOWEVER, THE MATTRESSES WERE LUMPY AND UNCOMFORTABLE, SOME LIGHTING IN THE ROOM DID NOT WORK, AND THE ABILITY TO REACH FRONT DESK BY PHONE WAS POOR. THE AUTO. WAKE-UP SERVICE DID NOT WORK PROPERLY AND SOME AMENITIES PROMISED […] WERE NOT DELIVERED. I DO NOT FEEL THAT THIS PRICEY HOTEL PROVIDED THE EXCELLENT SERVICE THAT A LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL SHOULD. "Wonderful Hotel Service"
The concierge service at this hotel was extraordinary, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was beautiful. The hotel itself was situated in an ideal location for sight-seeing around Old-Town, with many nice restaurants and pubs nearby. Edinburgh Castle, Mary King's Close, Holyrood Palace, the Scott Memorial, and the National Galleries were […] all within walking distance. The only drawback to this hotel in summer is the lack of air-conditioning in the bedrooms. They can get a bit stuffy, even with the tabletop fan provided for air circulation. Sleeping with the windows open was a challenge, as they opened onto a very noisy street with people shouting and partying til 3am...even on weeknights. That said, I would definitely stay here again. The central location, the elegance of the hotel, and above all the helpfulness of the staff and concierge overcome those small drawbacks in my opinion. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"too pricey for what you get"
hotel bellboy (s) wonderful. hotel receptionist (s) really cold. when i checked out no one even asked how my stay was. also, was given a set of charges that were all erroneous. had to debate with the check out clerk to have her take off the incorrect room charges. never said "sorry" or "did you have a good stay". also, room very small - nice but very […] small. finally, hotel layout terrible - no seating area upon entrance, terrible and confusing journey to pool (nice pool) and totally overpriced restaurant. would go to better hotel next time. We got upgraded to a suite, which was very nice, but there was no way to turn on the shower except to lean in over the toilet and get sprayed with cold water before standing up again. Also, the extra toilet paper roll was installed on the wall right next to the toilet and had become loose because of my and everyone else's bumping it with their legs. […] Finally, the bathroom telephone was installed right where your shoulder is if your sitting on the toilet, so I was constantly knocking if off the hook. Minor things, but they indicate that no one really thought through the use of these items before installing them. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We spent our holiday at B&Bs until our last day and happy we chose the Scotsman for our farewell departure. Wonderfully located with superb service. "Scotsman Hotel - downtown life in an old city"
The hotel was surrounded by night life, and plenty of 5 star amenities within. My one complaint was their description of our room as a suite. Since I was booking for 3 adults, I assumed it meant adjoining space. Not so. The double bed was next to the sofa sleeper which was next to another sofa, which was next to the table and chairs. I tried very hard […] to find accommodations where my adult son did not have to sleep on a couch! If a 3 star hotel can offer 2 double beds, why can't a 5 star? "Perfect hotel in the perfect location!"
The Scotsman is a beautiful hotel located in the most perfect location! From the moment we arrived the staff looked after our every need. They knew us by name and were always cheerful no matter what we requested. The concierge staff, doorman, front desk, each were exceptional. The restaurant was excellent and the staff there was also wonderful! Some […] of our group used the spa and they said it was lovely. The rooms were excellent. Roomy with lots of character. Beds super comfy. Awesome views! The Scotsman is located just off the Royal Mile. Just perfect! Much better in my opinion than locations across the bridge in New Town. "Atmospheric and well intentioned if uneven service"
Hotel alarm went off in the middle of the night, and there were 3 rounds of drunken brawlers at 2, 4, and 5:30 am. I didn't get much sleep. It seems the hotel could monitor street fighting by calling the police. I'm glad I switched hotels (Missoni). Otherwise, a very nice building (whose cramped halls could use some refurb) and nice desk staff (who […] seemed shorthanded)--the bar service was very slack. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Scotsman Hotel Rules!"
This hotel was so wonderful I wanted to stay there a week! Our room was HUGE, about 45 x 12 ft, with a bathroom of 10 x 14 ft. Beautiful decor, a crystal decanter of Scottish whiskey on a table,a bathtub the size of a small pond, an infinity pool in the health spa with a stainless steel liner: amazing! Great location by the train station, and many nearby […] places to eat and drink. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The only slight negatives were the lack of heating in the rooms, as they hadn't turned on the radiators for the winter yet. Also, their kitchen has limited capacity. We tried to eat there one night but they had a dinner for 30 persons elsewhere in the hotel, so couldn't accommodate us until way too late. Bt there were plenty of other options nearby. We will definitely stay here on our next trip to Edinburgh. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cheerful and helpful staff. Excellent location"
We will be returning to this hotel. We were in a junior suite so the size was very large for european standards. The bathrooms were renovated. Lovely breakfast. Excellent staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hotel is in the perfect location. Easy access to and from the hotel via airport express bus that you catch at lower market street and waverly bridge. Around the corner, right in the middle of the royal mile. Ideal location period.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The service was poor. We had to carry our own luggage when we arrived up to the Hotel from the Street level. The same when we checked out. The Hotel is not 5 star rating as noted on Hotel. com. It is in need of remodeling/repair. There is no air condition, therefore you are at the mercy of what air you can get from the opened windows...not to mention […] the smells. The Spa was never available in the 4 nights we were there. The restaurant was the only thing going for this hotel. I would recommend the Balomarol Hotel down the street or The Radisson on The Royal Mile. The Royal Mile is made up of Pubs and Souvenir Shops that are all Alike. In fact, I wouldn't doubt they are owned by the same family. What you didn't purchase in Store #1...you might have found at their cousins shop down the way. Shop after shop was all the same thing. 4 days of walking the mile is 3 days too many. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"A bit disappointed!"
I was very much looking forward to staying at this hotel. I had heard good reviews in the news media and on other internet sites. I found the physical space, i.e. the hallways and the public spaces to be cramped and a bit maze like. The room I was in was lovely but in July and August it can be a bit warm. My room was very warm to hot with one window […] that was broken and only a small fan to sort this out. I had to leave all the windows and curtains open all night just to make it through the night. I have to say that I found the young man who checked me in to be a bit rude. I didn't appreciate it when I asked him questions that he rolled his eyes and smirked at the other clerk. The only person who was great was the valet who helped with the bags and the showed me to my room. He was very helpful. I would definitely not return here. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Club music kept me up for hours."
I got a room on the 2nd floor. At 1am the music coming through the walls was still loud enough for me to make out the words. When I complained to the front desk they asked "does it bother you?" This wasn't street noise. The walls were actually vibrating. At 1:30 they had me repack and move to another room which they didn't make up the next day. I pointed […] out to both the night manager and the day manager the following morning my frustration. Their only response/remedy was "Sorry, this usually doesn't happen." Definitely not what I expect from a 5-star hotel. Location was perfect even though the hotel was surrounded by scaffolding. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"The Scotsman - In the Center of it all"
While not the highest end hotel in Edinburgh, The Scotsman provides an excellent location, with very comfortable rooms and great service. It has been converted from the old offices for The Scotsman newspaper. We got one of the Editor suites which had a king bed, a sitting area with a view over Waverly Station and out to the Firth of Forth, a first class […] bathroom, desk with wireless access and plenty of closet space. We also had a little pull out couch. It's an easy walk to the center of the Royal Mile or across the bridge to New Town. And you can spit on the train station and the pick up spot for many tours. The hotel staff was available to help with any of our needs 24/7, including arranging a car and driver on short notice when the one we had arranged ahead of time had mechanical problems.
