Tashkonak Hotel - Special Class - Istanbul

Although this hotel is close to the sites it is a bit difficult to find. It has a nice patio and roof area. Room was quite small and dated. Note this is an annex to the hotel with the same name. I would say the hotel was just average, but kind staff made the stay most pleasant.

We checked in late night coming from Zurich and we were welcomed by Ishmael and his assistant. Since we have our sleepy 3 year old daughter with us, he got us a family room right away and took care of our luggages and gave us 4 extra pillows. I stayed here a few years ago with a group of colleagues, and we all found this to be excellent value for money. This time, I was just over nighting, between flights. Although in the old city proper, it is no more than 20 minutes by taxi to the airport. I arrived at 9 AM and was given a room promptly. I went out and up the hill (about 200 yards) to […] a street with several restaurants and shops. This area is just below the Blue Mosque and feeds into a very good market for rugs, ceramics, etc. and the Mosaic museum, which is an excavated portion of the Byzantine great palace. Beyond the market are Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and associated museums, and the great cistern, as well as the entry to the Topkapi and the archaeological museums. For location in proximity to major sites, you can't beat the area in which the Tash Konak is located. There are lots of small and large hotels in the area, including the 4 Seasons which is in a renovated prison. Maybe one of the other small hotels would be as reasonable and as pleasant, but the terrace garden in the back bordered by a high Byzantine wall gives the Tash Konak a special island of quiet, where you can drink tea in the afternoon on the house. There is one drawback: no elevator. If stairs are a problem, you need to thinks of an alternative. Breakfast on the roof terrace is, as usual in Istanbul, a special treat, and is included in the room price. Read more

The room was small but very neat, the bed was comfortable. The room is cleaned everyday. The breakfast is served at the roof top terrace and the view is absolutely mindblowing. The location is amazing! Blue mosque, Hagia Sophia, Basilica cistern are 5 minutes away from the hotel. Grand Bazaar is 10 minutes if you walk. Topkapi palace is also close by. The Sultanhamet station is 5 minutes walk from the hotel. We were in Istanbul for 4 days and we used to go to the Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar almost everyday as it was so close. There are a lot of stores near by. There are a lot of street sellers who try to convince you to buy their stuff, they try coming close and talking but nobody is dangerous, you just need to walk past them if you are not interested in buying. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tashkonak hotel, when we first saw it we were not too sure as it looks like a 3 star hotel but by the end of our trip we were so happy with the hotel and its staff that we cannot imagine staying elsewhere if we go back to Istanbul. The stay for us as a couple was great, i would return to this hotel. I would have given it a full rating except that it was missed it by few minor things such as no trash can / pen /writing paper/ napkins-tissues in room, dated (but clean) bathroom, and no room service, or food menus. The staff spoke good english and was knowledgeable of touristy needs, they can call cabs for you, give you recommendations, and make your stay pleasant. It was snowing for few days, rooms where generally comfortable, but the heater had a crazy schedule and it would be cold for a little bit then very warm later. But nothing intolerable. It seems there was problem in the city. some kind of power failure. I understand that. Then I got mad and started shouting and then asked to speak to the manager, then when i yelled at the manager, they told my problem is fixed and when i go up to to my room, wala, the water is there. Its not that the power came back but that they stopped the water supply until u go and yell at them. This is pretty sick.
