My stay was fine. The Hotel was old but fairly well maintained. The one issue I had was that when I came in to my room and hopped in the shower, the previous guest's wash cloth was hanging from the shower rod. Not a big deal, but kind of gross. I honestly forgot about it but it was still there even after they supposedly cleaned, again. It was a small […] oversight but if they are not paying attention to these types of details, what else might they be missing that I don't know about? Read more
"good location"
were next to elevator and main street ( grant street) SO was a bit noisy we were able to get shifted which was no problems and room was a lot quieter. Service at reception was vey good. Very close to China town

"Nice comfortable place to stay."
I took my 10 yr old daughter for a one night stay in San Francisco. It was an inexpensive hotel with clean rooms and a friendly staff. The location was perfect- right next to China Town and Union Square. E&O Trading Co.(restaurant) was right around the corner. The room did get very hot at night but it was quiet. The parking garage for the hotel was […] a few blocks away which was not so convenient for check in and carrying our bags. My daughter loved the vending machines. There were no movie channels in the room but this hotel was actually a good fit for a fun getaway. Read more
"Amazing hotel"
This hotel was a wonderful experience for my family and has a convenient location next to China Town and STARBUCKS! The rooms were small, but cozy and had an okay veiw. It was hot at night, but easy to sleep. They make a towel into a cute animal! The staff is nice and helpful. In the lobby there is a snack machine and soda machine. This is a great hotel […] that I'd recommend. Read more
Baldwin Hotel too warm in the room. Heaters not controllable; But did have ceiling fan and windows were easily opened.

"The Baldwin in SF--a very comfortable hotel-"
We especially appreciated the exceptional staff who were very helpful and friendly. Well located and well priced.
"The Baldwin"
The Baldwin Hotel is adequet in all respects. It served our needs well, especially financially.
"Baldwin Hotel - small, clean, convenient but dated"
A good alternative hotel for those who are looking for a clean, safe and inexpensive room. It is conveniently located down the street from the Chinatown Gate. The hotel is definitely dated with small rooms, creaky floors and audible plumbing, but served its purpose for me well. I would stay again.

Nice helpful staff. No coffee in room but close to restaurants and Starbucks. Clean and nice bathroom. My king room pretty spacious and quiet. About 10+ min walk to BART. Good location for Union Square and Chinatown. Very good value for money and I would return.

"Great value"
The Baldwin is not a fancy hotel. Rooms are a little small and there isn't much of a lobby. But, my room had everything I care about: it was clean, the bed was comfortable, the plumbing was fine, there was a decent desk to work at and the wireless internet access was reliable. It was reasonably quiet (except for street noise, which is everywhere in […] the city) and the location is fantastic. If you plan to spend a great deal of time in your hotel, then maybe you should find a more upscale place (and probably spend at least twice as much). But, if you will be spending most of your time out and about in this great city and basically just need a comfortable place to crash, the Baldwin is a great value. Read more
"A good place to sleep"
A clean place to sleep and clean up no too far from most things downtown. Other than Lobby coffee and food delivery from outside, no other conveniences. We were overnighting during a train trip, so perfect for us.
"best deal in the area"
This hotel is very well located; the rooms are spacious and very clean. In addition the towel origami...you'll get a different shape every day...made my stay very pleasant...I would be excited to come back and see what the next one will be. When I first got to the hotel I thought this might have not been the best option. The hotel was under renovation […] and it didn't look that great. The reception lobby is very small and the elevator pretty old, but it's fast. The staff is very friendly. My room looked very nice, clean and quite spacious...especially compared to other hotels in the area (e.g Triton across the street from Baldwin where some of my friends stayed). The look of the room is a little bit old, but that's not important for me. This hotel is just at the gate of China Town. Very safe location and short walk distance to Union Square. And the price was great. Next time I’ll come to San Francisco...I will definitely book this hotel again. Read more
"Good, except outdoor noise"
The hotel is an older building. They were working on the lobby when I stayed so they are keeping up with service. The room was clean and hand almost new furniture. It was a nice place for the quality and price. My only complain was the noise from outdoors. The city itself is a pretty noisy place with the type of public transportation, but this area […] seemed to be especially noisy. The real issue is the lack of sound proof windows. I was in San Fran for training. I needed to be well rested for that. After the second night I asked to be moved. They moved me back to a room on the backside of the hotel. It was much better, not perfect, but much better. I would suggest asking for a back room if you are a fairly light sleeper or are in a situation where you need your rest. If they could improve the windows I could easily move the ratings up. A huge problem, but other than that my stay was good. I would guess it would depend on what is happening outside for the response to rating. I would still call it a good option for saving money in the city. Beatiful area and absolutely perfect if you are into shopping. I had to walk by the biggest store names in the first 3 blocks south of the hotel. The entrance to Chinatown was literally 50 feet from the door. I hope they improve the windows. sometime. They have clearly spent the time upgrading everything else. Read more
"Enjoyable Stay @ Baldwin"
Comfortable and affordable. Central location to many things: Chinatown, Financial District, BART, restaurants.
Great location near china town down the street from lots of clubs and bars. Rooms were super small. Didn't have good view.
"Hotel Baldwin"
I chose this place cause of its price, it's less expensive in an expensive area. And you get what you pay for. Stay was okay, nothing bad, but there are other affordable hotels nearby that I will select next time.
"Great Location"
This hotel is right at the entrance of Chinatown. I really enjoyed my stay and the staff was great. I would stay here again.
"Great Downtown/Chinatown Location"
We chose this hotel for it's location and it worked out fine for that reason - and that's why we would recommend this hotel to others. However, we were disappointed in many other ways. The hotel's Chinese name implies a special space or place (read boutique). While the original idea is a good one, the on going maintenance and staffing is not up to par. […] Most of the staff members are young Chinese men - nice but not well trained in customer service. For instance, we usually have to make the first "hello" type greeting to them...it should be the other way around. One or two were well groomed the others were either in t-shirts or have on rumpled clothing. This surely cannot fit in with the projected ideal the (original) owners must have in mind. As to manintenance: carpets looks a bit worn; strips on the elevator door not repainted; they used good paint in the bathroom but some dirt can be seen as not wiped off after previous usage...but worst of all.....one longish hook shape black hair could be seen under the clawed footed bathtub when we checked in...and it was still there when we checked out, after four days of stay. Maybe housekeeping should pay more attention to cleaning rather than making all those cutsie towel animals they leave on your bed each day. First things first! Read more

"Baldwin Hotel in San Francisco, CA"
Nice hotel for the price. Good location. Don't order the room service. Comes from a vendor outside of the hotel. Food was terrible and cold. Only gave us less than half an order of fries.

"Wonderful location, earplugs may needed"
Pros:The location of the hotel is absolutely wonderful. The hotel is few blocks from the Union Square, China Town, close to a million of buses going to any direction of SF, very convenient. It has a very safe neighborhood stuffed with cute cafes and restaurants. The staff was very helpful, gave us good directions with bus numbers before we headed to […] explore the city. Checked us at 10am (the room was ready then) Clean room, comfortable beds, warm, clean shower, simple design but has an old charm. Cons: Only one. There is no centralized air system. There was a heating system in the room (our visit was in December). So the room was very warm and dry and we could not turn off the heater. In order to get some fresh air into the room we were to open the window, but an outside noise was too loud to sleep in the morning. So advice:bring a pair of earplugs. Or sleep with a closed window. When it is closed, there is no noise whatsoever. Overall, the hotel is quite nice and who needs to sleep in SF? Get up and explore the city! Read more
"Baldwin Hotel was a great location, good value"
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Baldwin for 4 nights. This hotel is located right by the Chinatown gate, off Union Square, close to the Montgomery and Powell St BART stations and all the major bus routes. The rooms are on the small side, and it isn't really anything fancy, but we actually prefer that. Overall, the place was clean, but the carpet could […] use replacing. It wasn't too bad, but it was noticable. I'm pretty particular about bathrooms, and ours was spotless. If you are looking for big and fancy, look elsewhere. If you are looking for a comfortable, clean place to sleep, in a good location, for a good value, stay at the Baldwin! Read more

"Very nice stay right next to Chinatown"
I normally stay at a different hotel, but the Baldwin was available for a few dollars less over a busy holiday weekend, so I decided to give it a try. Make no mistake, it is an old building (small, slow elevator), and although well-maintained is far from glitzy and glamorous. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of my room (though not all rooms are […] the same size), and the large closet and bathroom were also nice. (The clawfoot tub is a classy, old-fashioned touch). What impressed me most was the customer service: I was brought an extra pillow within minutes of my request. The maid staff folded towels on my bed into various animal shapes (with googly eyes) - playful and welcoming. When I needed to print out a single receipt from my e-mail, the desk clerk suggested that I send it to him to print out for free, rather than use the available computer (which has a $5 minimum). There was little vending (two of the three vending machines were out of order), but there are convenience stores within a block. I will be happy to stay at the Baldwin again, and recommend it for travelers who don't mind "European" style accommodations and don't need the extra frills of a luxury hotel. Read more
"Baldwin excellence"
This has to be my favorite Hotel in San Francisco. I have stayed at a lot of 4 and 5 star hotels in the City and this one beats them all.
"Hotel Baldwin--at entrance to Chinatown, SanFran"
Perfect location! Older hotel but well renovated. Period features retained such as clawfoot bathtub. Next to restaurants--Sushi place next door, great bistro across the street. You can see the entrance to Chinatown from the Baldwin. Union Square just a block away. Buy the hop on/hop off bus tour around the city ahead of time and save $$. Pickup point […] is at the bistro across the street. Take your time getting around the city all day on the tour and come right back to the Baldwin. Would definitely stay again. Read more

"Baldwin Hotel, San Francisco -- clean and cheap"
for travelers on a budget. right at entrance to Chinatown and easy walking distance to both the financial district and shopping. old residential hotel. although elevator is slow and public areas a bit musty smelling, rooms are spotless and bathrooms (appear to have been renovated within last decade) are spotless as well. not much in the way of services. […] close to large public garage and to transportation. Read more
"Good location, older hotel"
The Baldwin is just steps from the Chinatown Gates and only a block from Union Square shopping. It's an older hotel, which means a small room, funky bathroom, and actual metal keys for your door. The place is not luxurious, but it's clean and quiet. They don't have their own parking, but work with a garage around the corner for a daily rate ($27 when […] we were there), helpful if you want to keep a rental car but stay in the heart of the city. If you prefer lots of creature comforts in your hotel stays, this isn't the place for you. But if you're all about location, and don't plan to linger in the room overlong, the Baldwin is clean, well-situated, and the staff is friendly. Also--free wifi! (Some earlier descriptions suggested that there was a charge, but not when we were there.) And they leave your towels folded up in cute little sculptures when they make up your room :). On the whole, I was perfectly happy with my stay, but I wouldn't recommend the Baldwin for luxury travelers or people who want lots of amenities in their hotels. If you're a more experienced traveler who's looking for reasonable prices in what's usually a pretty expensive part of town, the Baldwin will be fine. Read more
"Right next to Chinatown gate"
Location, location, location......plus super clean and very helpful staff, plus great value for where it is. Rooms are smaller than massive US suites, but was definitely big enough. Big Plus - free hotel safe in the room.

"Loved the location and a good hotel"
The location of this hotel was awesome! I walked out of the front door and was right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of downtown(which i like) and was 1/2 block away from the main gate to Chinatown, which we were interested in checking out. Also only a few blocks from Union Square. The hotel was small, but that didn't really bother me since […] I was only using it to sleep in and not to hang out in. I thought it was cute and quaint. I'm used to staying in chain hotels so this one was a little bit more unique. I'd go back to this hotel. Read more

"Affordable Stay"
Would have enjoyed an in room AC / Heating unit but other than that great hotel.
"Small older hotel in great location"
Hotels in the Union Square area of SF can be pricey, and the Baldwin is an excellent value. It is an older building with a single elevator and small rooms (think NYC or Europe), but it was extremely clean and orderly. The bathroom was very decent, and the closet was surprisingly large. The location is excellent - just a stone's throw from Chinatown […] and a 5-10 minute walk from Union Square and the BART. Would definitely recommend for a stay on a budget. Read more
"Great location just outside the gate to china town"
Small, nice room. Parking is around the corner 1 1/2 blocks up the street. Great location in Union Square, just outside the gate to China Town. Some tips: Cafe du Press across the street is great for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Also, a hot bagel place around the corner on Stockton if you want something smaller for breakfast like a bagel sandwich, or […] the 7/11 for fruit and yogurt. For getting around, walk a couple of blocks to 3rd and Market and take the F line trolley to Fisherman's Wharf, and then all the way out to Castro. When you get to Castro (and are done looking around) take the 33 bus right near there on 18th street, for a nice ride out to Haight Ashbury area. I was surprised that all the drivers accepted our transfers ALL DAY LONG. So, $2 was all it cost to ride all over the city for a great tour. Read more
"The Baldwin Hotel"
After reading reviews on Hotels.com, I wasn't expecting much from the Baldwin Hotel. The hotel was very nice and much better than I expected. The only thing (that was really disgusting) was that there was a ton of hair on the sheets when my friend and I arrived. We asked the hotel to remake the beds and once we did, we were very satisfied with our room. […] It just wasn't a very appealing thing to see when we first arrived. Read more

"Sab Francisco Baldwin Hotel"
Three of us (adults) spent a night in one room (two queen beds) at the Baldwin and found it quite satisfactory for our purpose--business as well as pleasure. The room was ready several hours early, which helped a lot. The reception was very friendly and responsive, very efficient. The room itself was typical of older inner-city hotels but well-maintained […] despite some shabbiness in the carpet. The bath was old style but large, very clean and overall quite lovely for anyone who likes such older hotels. The price didn't leave quite enough difference with more contemporary establishments, perhaps, but still we felt well-served and comfortable during our stay. Read more
"Very good option for the price"
Everything is fine with the Baldwin Hotel, location is perfect, there is a Starbucks cafe just outside the hotel and lots of nice shops and restaurants in the area. My only complaint is that the rooms still use old-metallic keys instead of electronic/magnetic, and security wise, you need to carry a key with the room number craved. But in general terms […] I strongly recommend the hotel. Read more
"Great location, OK amenities ..."
All depends on what you are looking for. If you just want a cheap place to lay your head but during the day enjoy the heart of San Francisco, this would do the trick. But if you are a traveler looking for a few more amenities (e.g. breakfast, internet access, speedy elevators, et. al) then you are better off going around the corner to on the Marriott […] or Westin chains. Sushi place right next door is one of my favorites in SFO. Read more
"Ideal location"
This Hotel was away from the hubbub of Fisherman's Wharf and right in the shopping district. then across from China town. No car needed and plenty to do for tourist.
"Baldwin Hotel- Grant Avenue's best kept secret"
My husband and I stayed 4 nights at the Baldwin. The lobby is not fancy or cutting edge, but our room was very comfortable, newly renovated, extremely clean and tidy. We enjoyed the "towel animal sculptures" left on our bed each day after housekeeping did a thorough job of cleaning the room and bath. The elevator is very small, but the hotel staff more […] than makes up for that...professional, responsive and attentive. The location is great...in the heart of the best fashion retailers in the country and near Chinatown. Read more
