"Nice hotel; great staff."
This hotel was great for the price; a four star for a three star price. The hotel desk staff met us with a glass of fresh fruit juice while we checked in, and that exceptional service kept up the pace during our 12 day stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel and good price...close to beach"
The food was decent, some times really good... drinks were decent... but for all inclusive and at that price, pretty good overall. Rooms were clean, lobby was beautiful, staff was super friendly, many fun activities offered throughout the day, activities beachside, poolside and at night...bars and club were fun and akways packed with people pre partting […] before heading to town. 5 min walk to beautiful beach ...not too many hagglers...and 5 min cab ride to town. Could use other riu properties which were across street..very good deal for the price. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Wish we would have stayed longer this time....we stayed there for 11 days in 2002, and enjoyed ever minute of it! We were invited for a wedding at the Riu Playacar, which we loved. Visited the Yucatan also, that looked to be a very nice place also, might look into staying there sometime. Great weather, which make the vacation a much more enjoyable one […] too. Food - awesome!!!! No complaints from us. The waiters/bartenders were just as accommodating as last time-loved them all! Will visit again, see you then! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Overbooked had to switch hotels"
The hotel was overbooked so we were moved across the street to the RIU Yucatan. We have stayed at the Tequila before and thoroughly enjoyed it. The location of the Yucatan is ocean front so that was nice. The staff are very friendly at both resorts. The only downside is the massive amount of people at the resort and the corresponding issues related […] to increased population such as spilled drinks and tanning oil floating in the pools. Not the fault of the staff or hotel, but rather a result of a lot of people just cutting loose and having a good time. For the stuffy, I would suggest one of the neighboring Palace resorts as they are likely to be much more tame with a mature clientele. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good hotel with excellent food"
I liked the hotel service is good, people are friendly and always ready to help you with everything you want or need. The restaurants are always attentive to please you in what you want; and treat you like they know you a long time.Genuine Expedia guest review
This is a set of several three story nicely spread buildings with two large pools at the end. The pools are facing the beach, as is one of the restaurants. Food is excellent and quite rich in variety. The hotel is also in a restricted access area, which allows you to take a walk, if you'd like. Each night there is a show, which excellent. Very family […] friendly, our kids had a blast. Weather is perfect in April. Overall very happy with the stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Spring Break Trip"
This resort is nice and I would certainly come back. I love all the greenery. The food options were many and if you were hungry it was your own fault. One thing that was a little disappointing is trying to get dinner reservations. In order to get on, you had to show up at 7am-7:30am to make it in order to get a reservation. Who wants to get up early […] on vacation to make a dinner reservation!?! Also, as far as liquor options, this resort needs to have more than just one option for beer. Dos Equis lager and amber is all they serve. One thing that must change is the red wine choice. The wine was so HORRIBLE. I mean horrible! Also, there needs to be another option for kids in the room refrigerator other than pop. It would not take much to put some lemonade or juices in there. I know they can go to the bar and get that, but there needs to be something else in the room for them to drink. The walk to the beach was not bad at all. I know some folks complain about that, but after eating all that you can eat a good walk every day is good. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The food was very good. However, most of the specialty dinners were in the regular lunch room, just roped off. The rooms were nice, better than expected but the beds were uncomfortable. The hotel is walking distance from playadel carmen. However, you have to leave the resort to walk to the other RIU Hotels in Playacar as they are not on the same property […] and have other Hotels and peoples houses wedged in-between them. There are no shuttles from RIU hotel to RIU hotel. If I booked one of these RIU hotels again I would probably spend the little extra to get to one of the RIU Palaces or better jet book at the similarly priced RIU Yukatan which was just remodeled and is right on the beach. Spent most of the time I was on vacation at that Hotel as it was because the pool is very nice and overlooks the beach. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful Hotel with lush gardens surrounding"
We've stayed at a Riu in Cancun--this is similar. Friendly staff, great shows, nice rooms and beautiful grounds and pools. Just a short 5 min stroll to the ocean. The beach and ocean were by far more beautiful here. The food was great--not quite the selection as the one in Cancun--but still delicious. I missed not having a happy hour, featuring different […] drinks in the evenings in the lobby--that's one thing tequilla should do that the Riu in Cancun did. Otherwise, overall my experience with Riu is excellent--however I preferred this location over the Cancun area--It seemed more relaxed. Can't wait to go back. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Above average, long distance from the ocean"
This is one of many hotels in Playa del Carmen, but stands out among the lower-tier hotels as cleaner, home-like hotel maintaining the mexican ambience and spirit in traditional style. Riu TeQuila, unlike recently renovated neighbors Riu Yukatan and Riu Palace, maintains the charm of the Caribbean resort, while the two other hotels attempt to recreate […] some modern and at the same time cold and business-like style. On the down side, the hotel lost its tennis courts to a conference hall that was built on top, and now guests can walk a couple of blocks to another Riu hotel to find two old and poorly maintained tennis courts. The distance from the hotel to the beach which is shared with Riu Youcatan is about about three quarters of a kilometer, and although there is a little shuttle cruising back and force most of the guests should expect to walk the distance most of the time, which I consider a plus, given the amount of food consumed during the stay. "Nice hotel, friendly staff"
Always found the buffet had more than enough options to please everyone, beach is beautiful even if a short walk to get there, a little exercise to start and the end day was okay with me. "Valentine 10yr Anniversary . Feb 14/2014"
I had requested a specific building (2900) and to be close to the pool and the facilities, received exactly what I had requested. Felt very safe as all the Riu Resorts are situated in a gated community amongst privately owned homes. Walking everywhere at any time of day or evening was not an issue. I would highly recommend this place and I'm already […] looking to plan next years vacation to the Riu Tequila !!!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The resort has a beautiful Mexican feel and is and very large. The hotel buildings are spread out over the property, requiring a lot of walking just to get to your room from the lobby or to the pool area. If you walk to the beach, it's about a half mile (5 minute walk) from the lobby. If you have walking disabilities, this may not be the place for you. Rooms […] were spacious and clean. The food was quite good for an all-inclusive resort. You have to make reservations for the restaurants if you don't want to eat dinner at the buffet. Prepare to get up early to make them. The Asian restaurant was actually a buffet, which was disappointing. The Mexican restaurant and the steak house were very good. None of the restaurants were over-crowded in the evening. Beach is gorgeous! Lots of lounge chairs and space, but didn't feel crowded. Evening entertainment was enjoyable. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We liked the hotel style, grounds, location and food. And the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The hotel was full and there weren't enough pool chairs or lounges in the lobby and the lobby was the only place we had access to wifi.Genuine Expedia guest review

"OK-to-fine territory with so-so-to-bad rooms"
Hotel staff is basically friendly, but few buts: - reception may provide sort of misleading information. We were there to attend friends wedding at the neighbor Riu Palace Mexico, person at the front desk told us that he will be able to provide us with 8a-5p day pass so we can spend time with friends. After all it appeared to be not a real pass, but […] just some small piece of paper (instead of day pass bracelet) that you can use to get to territory for a limited time just to look around. - maybe it's not specifically staff problem, but architectural and room design problem, however i found it very difficult to stay asleep when staff started cleaning rooms around at 8am. Somehow it was really-really loud in our room, with all the staff voices and cleaning noises... Hotel territory and shared facilities were actually decent, seemed to be maintained OK. Rooms - not so much. Sheets not really clean, with some stains, smelly (probably because of being wet all the time). I can normally withstand not really good conditions, but people who are more picky most definitely wouldn't enjoy the rooms. Paint on walls and ceiling, mirrors, floor - all is asking for some work, repair or replacement. No light in shower, just whatever you get thru the curtain separating it from the room. So basically rooms can be survived, but kind of disappointing indeed. Food is mostly OK. Seafood somehow with very fishy smell, almost to the point when you cannot eat it. Mostly cheap instant coffee. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

The hotel staff was great. Very friendly and welcoming. The food was great, always had something that we could enjoy. The rooms were not as nice as we would have hoped for. "A bit disappointing"
I've traveled to the Yucatan peninsula yearly for the past 15 years. Every year I like the area more and more. Of all of the resorts in the Playa del Carmen area the Riu Tequila fell a bit short. The staff is excellent, however the facilities, entertainment, food and amenities are not that good.. Most drinks and bartenders were excellent but the "Tequila" […] the Mexican national drink was watered down with either water or 7up, sad indeed, not worthy of the Riu standards (at least I hope the others continue their high standards) The reservation restaurants in other resorts have always been a bit better than the general buffet, not the case here, tried 2, did not bother to try anymore, food was awful. The same sentiment was shared by many guests we spoke to. It was also disappointing to see the food from the night before being recycled so often. At the beach (close to a mile away) the amount of chairs to customers ratio was way off. I also know this resort is technically in the jungle, so insects are expected. but on my last night I found a huge cockroach on my pillow, this is unacceptable since they dwell in garbage. Needless to say, my first and only time at this place. Hope you find this info helpfull Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great place for family!"
Rui Tequila is a great place for families, awsome for the price. You get to use the other facilities at Rui hotels. Rui tequilia is not directly on the beach, about a 5min walk or take the trolly 3 min. Rui Yucatan is on the beach but thier staff is not very nice. The staff at the Tequilla is fantastic! They are friendly, funny and very helpfull! The […] staff at the other Rui hotels were not as friendly as the ones from Tequilla, they go out of there way to make sure you are having the best vacation. In reality its like having a beach from hotel because you use the same anemitties: pools, bars, place to eat, towles etc.. We went on a family vacation (2 families) with kids 5, 9, 11, 12, 15. The shows after dinner at Tequllia were super entertaining the kids loved them. Oh, and the steakhouse restrant was amazing. We are from Texas, so we know steak! Full cuts of rib eys or sirlions or new york strip. My brother in-law is a carnivor we ate 3 out of 7 nights there. The head waiter Felix and Polo are the BEST!! Thanks Rui Tequilla for an awsome vacation! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Nice hotel, but so-so food."
Overall, the staff, lodging, facilities, and entertainment were all quite excellent. However, the food was not that terrific... The steakhouse overcooked the steak and turn the lights off on everyone at one part of the meal (quite a few people left). The Asian restaurant served what I would consider non-Asian food. It seemed like the chefs decided to […] make some that resembled Asian food instead of research what the cuisine should be. Next door, the Riu Yucatan had much better quality of food. "Great for the price!"
If you don't mind walking (or riding a golf cart) 300 yards to the beach, this place is great. It's not a five star resort, but for the price it's excellent. I was with a group of six. We tried the steakhouse and asian restaurants. They were both very good. We were split evenly about which was better. The food on the buffets were good (not great). There […] is a very large selection, so everyone found something they liked. We discovered that if you sit close to the lobby in the buffet, you can receive the free Wi-fi signal. This was especially nice in the mornings while we were waiting on all of our party to arrive and eat. The grounds were well maintained. The staff was helpful and very friendly. The rooms were nicer than I expected. There was also a liquor dispenser. The fridge had water, soft drinks a four Dos Equis Lagers. They are stocked every other day, but if you ask they will gladly give you more drinks. The bars only served Dos Equis, but that was fine with me. I read some reviews that claimed the drinks were weak. We didn't find that to be the case. The pool was nice, but seemed a little dirty. There were a lot of lounge chairs around the pool, but everyone layed out towels early to reserve them. I would recommend using the pools in the Yucatan and Playacar resorts. They are on the beach and you can eat and use all the facilities at those resorts. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We just got back from our vacation at the Riu Tequila. My family and I had a wonderful time. The hotel was beautiful and the staff were AWESOME!!! "Don't waste your vacation in Riu Tequila"
The Good: The rooms and overall facility are well kept and very clean. Cleaning staff is friendly and help out until you are satisfied. The bartenders are extremely friendly and interface well with everyone; they too should be commended. The Bad (a lot): The food is below average, especially the steakhouse (not worth the hassle)!!! The established […] open hours for the buffets, snack bars, and restaurants is unreasonable for a family on vacation that comes and goes from activity to activity. Don't expect to eat if you plan to have fun in Riviera Maya. The kitchen staff (Hosts, waiters and waitresses) are RUDE! The reservation system for the restaurants is ridiculous (a person writes room numbers on a pad of paper; no "phone-in" reservations). If you are not in front of the "Jalisco Restaurant" by 7:15am sharp to reserve a spot, you will not get into the steakhouse. The "Sports Bar" snack food is worse than a vending machine. They would drastically improve their food services by adding vending machines in the Sports Bar. Their food is that bad, no joke! The entertainment staff is average at best. They seem to lack moral; no surprise there. It seems someone straight out of the 1950's is running the entertainment and food services at this facility. Overall, the Riu Tequila is without a doubt the worst run facility in Riviera Maya!!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We had a great time at the Riu Tequila. The accomodations were great, we had a junior suite. The resort was nice, the food was fanastic, there was something for everyone and even the pickiest eaters. The pools were great, although, difficult to get a close seat because people would save seats with towels all day. The beach was gorgeous and there were […] more than enough chairs to accomodate the people staying at the hotel. There is a golf cart that runs every ten minutes to take people to the beach, but the walk is a nice 5-10 minute walk depending on individual. During the day there are beach and pool activities for everyone. The entertainment in the evening was great! There is a kids show every night and then family show afterwards with interactive audience participation. The staff was nice. There is also a sports bar on site with pool tables, foosball, airhockey, a few video games, computers for internet. Overall a great family resort. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Riu not for families, better options!"
Disappointing parts of the stay: old t.v. with bad reception, two beds which were not connected (should have been one Q or K size), a couple of unexpected spiders in the room, and food was not available 24x7 (after 10 p.m. - only cold sandwiches/nachos at the sports bar). After visiting several other Riu Hotels at the same beach, we realized they are […] not really made for families. We have been to other all inclusive and now that we have compared we will stay at a Sandos for kids activities. "Riu Tequila part 2"
We previously visited this hotel in December, 2010, and loved our stay. We decided to return during the off-peak season. A few things changed since we visited in December 2010. They do not light up the place with decorative lighting the same as they do near Christmas-time. This was a surprise, as the lights are not festive colored. The meals are still […] very good, however, ice sculptures were not made every night, and entertainment was less than it is during the peak season. The temperature in May is a little warm, but after a day or so you will adjust. So long as you have a breeze, the beach is great. Be aware, the rooms do not get very cold, even if the AC runs all day. I think the coolest our room got was around 78 degrees, and it ran day and night the entire time we were there. The beds can be a little stiff, but still got mostly a good night's sleep. The staff is amazing. Everyone there has a great attitude, and does their best to take great care of you while you are there. As far as all-inclusive resorts in the Playa Del Carmen area, this one is top notch for the price you pay, and has very close access to downtown, XPlor, Tulum, and Xcaret. this place was fine. it wasn't extraordinary in any way. there were little mistakes here and there that clued you into the fact that you're paying for beach access and not top-notch hotel services. for example, one day after my room had been cleaned, there weren't any towels. also someone in my party found a hair in their food almost every day of our […] trip. but the pool and beach were very nice. "Clean and fun"
This hotel is clean and nice. The staff is friendly and helpful. The location is further from the beach than most but they do have a buggy that you that travels back and forth to the beach via a nice paved road that can also be walked in about five or ten minutes. The hotel grounds are excellent, and are well kept. We stayed in the Riu Playacar in previous […] years and that is just across the road and is next to the beach. We found that this larger, and a bit more formal, resort a bit less to our liking. At the evening meal they have a rule that you can wear shorts, but they must be of the kind that has a belt and are not the thin soft material like used on swim suits. I'm not sure where the line is drawn. Blue jean shorts are ok. I think they need to trap and remove some of those Raccoon looking Coatis. They are cute at first, but become quite a pest at the meals when they are in the outside dining area. They will hop up on your table if you leave your food unattended to visit the food buffet. Sometimes they will do it when you are at the table if you let your guard down, and they don't have a dress code. All in all it's a good place to stay and I would go back if it were closer to the beach and a bit more relaxed. But for My wife and I we will be going back to the Riu Playacar on our next visit to Playa del Carman. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Hotel for Anyone."
People will find something to complain about anywhere they go. The Riu Tequila has a short wall to the beach but its well worth it, plus you get to walk off all the great food they have. Found the wait staff incredibly friendly, a few even knew us by name after the first day. Pools were nice and not too crowded, beach was the best in the area (and we […] did walk a few miles up and down the beach) and plenty of places to lay back and relax for an hour or the day. Im a pretty picky eater and I had no issues finding food anytime of day. you can easily have a different meal eveytime and thats just at the main buffet. We would definitely return to the Riu Tequila. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
