"Friendly and Beautiful"
Right from the start you are greeted with a smile. The customer service is excellent. This is out second RIU we have stayed. One was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica and this time at Playa Del Carmen, MX. Really enjoy staying at this Hotel. Everyday there's a variety of food to satisfy any person's desire. Everything is so clean and tidy. The environment alone […] is beautiful. "Don't waste your vacation in Riu Tequila"
The Good: The rooms and overall facility are well kept and very clean. Cleaning staff is friendly and help out until you are satisfied. The bartenders are extremely friendly and interface well with everyone; they too should be commended. The Bad (a lot): The food is below average, especially the steakhouse (not worth the hassle)!!! The established […] open hours for the buffets, snack bars, and restaurants is unreasonable for a family on vacation that comes and goes from activity to activity. Don't expect to eat if you plan to have fun in Riviera Maya. The kitchen staff (Hosts, waiters and waitresses) are RUDE! The reservation system for the restaurants is ridiculous (a person writes room numbers on a pad of paper; no "phone-in" reservations). If you are not in front of the "Jalisco Restaurant" by 7:15am sharp to reserve a spot, you will not get into the steakhouse. The "Sports Bar" snack food is worse than a vending machine. They would drastically improve their food services by adding vending machines in the Sports Bar. Their food is that bad, no joke! The entertainment staff is average at best. They seem to lack moral; no surprise there. It seems someone straight out of the 1950's is running the entertainment and food services at this facility. Overall, the Riu Tequila is without a doubt the worst run facility in Riviera Maya!!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"July 2013 stay"
Hotel was very clean and staff were helpful. Food was okay at best. was a little far away from the beach, but overall decent hotel stay. Rui is a good place to stay, but next time would stay at the Rui Palace or Rui playacar on the beachGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel. Great staff. Clean."
Overall our experience was great. The rooms were clean. The food was good, not great but very good for all inclusive. They give you several options for dinner whig. Was great. The biggest con about the hotel was the fact that the beds are old and not comfortable. The decor is a little outdated but at least the cleanliness and the friendliness of the […] hotel & staff makes up for it. Also wifi is only free in the lobby for 90 minutes. "Great family vacation"
We had a great time at the Riu Tequila. The accomodations were great, we had a junior suite. The resort was nice, the food was fanastic, there was something for everyone and even the pickiest eaters. The pools were great, although, difficult to get a close seat because people would save seats with towels all day. The beach was gorgeous and there were […] more than enough chairs to accomodate the people staying at the hotel. There is a golf cart that runs every ten minutes to take people to the beach, but the walk is a nice 5-10 minute walk depending on individual. During the day there are beach and pool activities for everyone. The entertainment in the evening was great! There is a kids show every night and then family show afterwards with interactive audience participation. The staff was nice. There is also a sports bar on site with pool tables, foosball, airhockey, a few video games, computers for internet. Overall a great family resort. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Riu not for families, better options!"
Disappointing parts of the stay: old t.v. with bad reception, two beds which were not connected (should have been one Q or K size), a couple of unexpected spiders in the room, and food was not available 24x7 (after 10 p.m. - only cold sandwiches/nachos at the sports bar). After visiting several other Riu Hotels at the same beach, we realized they are […] not really made for families. We have been to other all inclusive and now that we have compared we will stay at a Sandos for kids activities. If you are not interested in being at the beach (beach was easy to get too - about 300 yards away) and are looking for a budget all inclusive this may be the place for you. "Never going back."
Did not have a good time at this hotel. The reception desk staff were rude. The standard room was mediocre. The food was so bad and the alcoholic drinks were worse! Good thing we spent a lot of time away from hotel on excursions.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel. Far from beach. Limited food choices"
Not on the beach. Food choices a re limited for vegetarians. Would not cater to vegetarian diet at 3 restaurants. We were left with all you can eat Buffett. Nice decor. Water downed drinks. Nice disco.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Riu Tequila part 2"
We previously visited this hotel in December, 2010, and loved our stay. We decided to return during the off-peak season. A few things changed since we visited in December 2010. They do not light up the place with decorative lighting the same as they do near Christmas-time. This was a surprise, as the lights are not festive colored. The meals are still […] very good, however, ice sculptures were not made every night, and entertainment was less than it is during the peak season. The temperature in May is a little warm, but after a day or so you will adjust. So long as you have a breeze, the beach is great. Be aware, the rooms do not get very cold, even if the AC runs all day. I think the coolest our room got was around 78 degrees, and it ran day and night the entire time we were there. The beds can be a little stiff, but still got mostly a good night's sleep. The staff is amazing. Everyone there has a great attitude, and does their best to take great care of you while you are there. As far as all-inclusive resorts in the Playa Del Carmen area, this one is top notch for the price you pay, and has very close access to downtown, XPlor, Tulum, and Xcaret. "go for the beach"
this place was fine. it wasn't extraordinary in any way. there were little mistakes here and there that clued you into the fact that you're paying for beach access and not top-notch hotel services. for example, one day after my room had been cleaned, there weren't any towels. also someone in my party found a hair in their food almost every day of our […] trip. but the pool and beach were very nice. "Clean and fun"
This hotel is clean and nice. The staff is friendly and helpful. The location is further from the beach than most but they do have a buggy that you that travels back and forth to the beach via a nice paved road that can also be walked in about five or ten minutes. The hotel grounds are excellent, and are well kept. We stayed in the Riu Playacar in previous […] years and that is just across the road and is next to the beach. We found that this larger, and a bit more formal, resort a bit less to our liking. At the evening meal they have a rule that you can wear shorts, but they must be of the kind that has a belt and are not the thin soft material like used on swim suits. I'm not sure where the line is drawn. Blue jean shorts are ok. I think they need to trap and remove some of those Raccoon looking Coatis. They are cute at first, but become quite a pest at the meals when they are in the outside dining area. They will hop up on your table if you leave your food unattended to visit the food buffet. Sometimes they will do it when you are at the table if you let your guard down, and they don't have a dress code. All in all it's a good place to stay and I would go back if it were closer to the beach and a bit more relaxed. But for My wife and I we will be going back to the Riu Playacar on our next visit to Playa del Carman. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Hotel for Anyone."
People will find something to complain about anywhere they go. The Riu Tequila has a short wall to the beach but its well worth it, plus you get to walk off all the great food they have. Found the wait staff incredibly friendly, a few even knew us by name after the first day. Pools were nice and not too crowded, beach was the best in the area (and we […] did walk a few miles up and down the beach) and plenty of places to lay back and relax for an hour or the day. Im a pretty picky eater and I had no issues finding food anytime of day. you can easily have a different meal eveytime and thats just at the main buffet. We would definitely return to the Riu Tequila. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Lost a lot of sleep"
The beds were very uncomfortable and because of it we had problems sleeping. The a/c was not quite working well and the temperature in the room was sometimes high. Food was ok, but the same every day. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We will not come back to this hotel again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"OK for the money"
It's a decent hotel with decent food and drinks, except non-alcoholic drinks (juices, shakes, milk) are diluted with water. Coffee is good. Pool towels are consistently dirty and laundry service is questionable. If you don't plan to use those, you should be fine there.Genuine Expedia guest review
Not friendly wait staff and front desk was NO help on many occasions.. Bed was terribly uncomfortable.. No water pressure in showerGenuine Expedia guest review
"Had a great stay!"
Rooms were comfortable, staff was friendly and helpful, and the food was very good. The steak house wasn't worth getting up early for the reservation need to go there. That was the only complaint. We were very happy with everything else. I would recommend a stay at the Riu Tequila.Genuine Expedia guest review
"The Resort was a great Spring Break destination!"
The hotel was very nice and had great service. All the employees were very helpful. I loved being walk-able distance from the ocean. It was quite a ways away from Cancun attractions, but it was nearby other attractions. The ocean view was breath-taking. All and all, it was a great Spring Break.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Spend the extra couple of hundred..."
First: we were handed the key to the wrong room & walked into an occupied room. When I called for help, the person said (in perfect English) that he didn't speak English because he was Mexican. When we went back up and corrected the room key for our actual room number, the person handed us the key without confirming that we were supposed to be in the […] room we said we were. The location was awful- 15 min walk from the beach, 30 min cab right do shopping & fun, and the hotel itself was laid out poorly. The towels felt like rusty S.O.S. pads & the beds felt like wood crates. The food was lackluster and repetitive, and the drinks were more water than liquor. The wi-fi could only be accessed in the lobby for 90 consectuive minutes. Next time, we'll spend the extra money to stay somewhere nicer and closer to the beach and fun. "When can I return to the Tequila?"
Keeping in mind that the meals are served in buffet style, with a steak house and a Asian restaurant in addition, the meals have an outstanding array of different foods to suit the many backgrounds of people staying at the Tequila. The hotel grounds are beautiful and hotel staff is beyond friendly. You have the ability to use the beaches of the RIU […] Playacar and the RIU Yucatan, to include lunches and drinks. A shuttle is there to take you from the Tequila to the Yucatan on a continious cycle. I have stayed at the Tequila 12 times and will return as often as possible. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We love going to this resort. Everyone is so nice and helpful. We only had one problem, and that was getting the scheduled bottled water delivered to our room. We had to ask each time we ran out. It's really a fun place to stay!Genuine Expedia guest review
The mattress on the beds were too hard. The Internet service was not good. You only were able to use 90 minutes a day. "family hotel in the jungle"
We got a free upgrade to a suite with Expedia. The room was great and had a balcony overlooking the jungle. The beach was across the street with a shuttle. The food was excellent. "Great for family vaca not so great for party ppl."
I'm 24 and went there for a family vaca for a wk. since it was school break a lot of family and couples. This was my 3rd time in Mexico the last two times went to Cancun. Riu tequila is nice and the reviews u read abt the bad drinks well guess what they seem to be like that at every all inclusive resort bc they use watered down o out at night don't […] pay more then 55$ for coco bongos at the door if arge u 75$ originally and we had them go down on price 3times bc we were walking away and we had a group o 9 of us For the 55 they should still provide u with open bar. For mandale club we went with the resort and originally they said 40$ but then it was only 20$ drinks included. Great music fun!! Coco bongos great gos! Also the food great variety and if its my 3rd time at all inclusive in Mexico and trust me it all gets old. If you go to the steak house don't get the chicken groooosee and if u go there u can always order the shrimpng Mexico in February as I have the past 3 years are alll from Canada and they alll smoke same as ppl from England who smoke as well. Not many ppl go from USA. Te beach is right across seriously it's not far at alll. Don't let that stop u from booking it. Although if youcatan riu has a better deal stay there instead. If your young and just want to party go to the oasis in Cancun and one of them they are all combined. If u want more of a relaxing atmosphere riu tequila is for you. "A smoking haven"
If you enjoy non-stop second-hand smoking, then this is the place for you! The lobby area and entertainment room were all open air, which was very nice and relaxing when there weren't people smoking, which was never. "Beautiful grounds and clean hotel"
The grounds were beautiful and well kept by the staff. The animals running around the property were fun to watch. The rooms were small and need updating, but were very kept very clean by the housekeeping staff. The food got boring by the end of the week as buffet food always does. We enjoyed the short walk to the beach and the reward of the walk is […] the beautiful blue water and white sand beach. A short walk down the beach is 5th avenue for shopping. "Great hotel for Maya Riviera activities"
We loved the Riu Tequila. It is a lovely hotel: grounds, lobby, rooms, swimming pool, and the restaurants. The short walk to the beach was not a problem and it was also a short walk to Playa del Carmen and the ferry to Cozumel. We enjoyed the night entertainment. Although we did not try snorkeling, the body surfing in the warm ocean was great. We […] used it as a central location to go on day trips to Cozumel, Coba, and Selvatica Park. "Reasonable but not fantastic as they advertise it."
The hotel is not on the beach. There is a 10 min walk to get to the beach. You will have access to RIU Playacar and RIU Yucatan as well (they are both located on the beach). The food is good, but not fantastic. They do not offer too much seafood, like they used to. A la carte restaurants are OK, nothing special. They are 3: Lupita (steak house), Asiatico […] and Mexican. Avoid going to Asiatico, which is a buffet. The people are very friendly and you do not get that feeling that they expect tip. Good shows. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Terrible Buffet + Horrible Drinks = Dont Book"
Had never done an all inclusive hotel before and didn't really know what to expect. Upon arriving, I could tell we were in for a rude awakening. I'll just keep this short and sweet. If you are a foodie or even remotely close to being a foodie, stay away from this hotel. The drinks are dreadful. Totally watered down and tasteless. Their version of a […] margarita tastes like some sunny-D mixed with cheap watered down tequila. It was the same for all other drinks. The buffets were bad. Imagine a cheap Vegas buffet only 10x's worse. I would probe the entire buffet and the best item I could come up with was pizza and it was terrible. It made a red barron look like 5 star dining. Their specialty restaurants were a joke as well. They are basically the same horrible buffets in disguise. The grounds of the hotel are okay but they really felt more like a jungle as opposed to manicured grounds like other hotels. The room felt old and dingy and there was no double bed just 2 singles pushed together, which sucked. The sheets were rough and the bed was hard as a rock. If you're going to bother coming all the way down here, don't waste your time with this hotel. This hotel is a far cry from 4 stars. Felt more like 2 or maybe even 1. Do yourself a favor and stay away! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Will NOT return! A 2.5 star resort at most."
We traveled to Riu Tequila in a group of 9 people for a family reunion and we will never go there again. One of the rooms had a puddle on the floor from a leaking air conditioner and the bathroom mirror was splattered with some reddish-orange substance -quite disturbing! We got another room in which the air conditioner did not work, so we slept with […] the porch door open. Also, there were no "smoking" or "non-smoking" rooms, all rooms were "optional" for guests. One of our rooms smelled of cigarettes. There was no light in the shower and no ventilation in the bathroom. The beach was the greatest disappointment and shock! Despite that it was only a 3 minutes' walk from the resort, there were numerous women on the beach tanning topless, while it was considered a "family-friendly" beach/resort. Overall, the degree of immorality and shamelessness from some of the guests was appalling. Definitely NOT the place to go if you're traveling with children. The resort had nightly shows, some of which were entertaining but the "theater" did not have a "smoking" or "non-smoking" section. No matter how many times we changed our seats, there was always someone smoking at the next table. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Pros: Clean rooms, good water pressure in shower, amazing beach and some decent service. Cons: Suites in the back of the property make for a long walk to the lobby and beach, rooms are outdated, below to average food, lack of sanitary conditions in public restrooms. "pretty nice for the money"
For the money this wasn't a bad experience. They had too many rules though for me. Had to make reservations for all the restaurants except the buffet, food at the buffets was marginal. By the end of the week we were all pretty sick of the food since it was the same thing every day we were there. Everyone in our group ended up with diarrhea. We had a […] suite which was very nice and big. Had to wait until the second day of our trip though to get it since one was not available when we got there so had to move rooms. The staff did try and make up for that though by sending flowers and a small gift to our room with a letter of apology. As a whole the reosrt was very clean and well maintained. I didn't like the way you had to get towels, they gave you towel cards at check in and you had to keep track of them and turn them in for towels and if you lost the cards they would charge you for them.
