"The Good and The Bad"
Overnight on my way hone after a long trip. Great place but clients should know aabout men's nights etc. Also I had a serious alergy reactiion waiting in the Club room after I checked out of my room and before the ferry. I was sitting in a upholstered chair. Once I got outside it went away but for a while I thought I would not be able to go to the ferry […] and would miss my plane. So nice as it was I probably would not stay a second time. Also the stairs upon arrival are not expected and very intimidating. Once you were inside you learned of an alter exit but upon arrival you don't know about it and if you did you wouldn't have a key. "Charming Historical Building"
The hotel is in a charming historical building and walking distance to all downtown must-see sights. To access the front desk, which is on the second floor, we had to lug up the luggage up the stairs. In the morning, the seagulls outside the window start squawking at the crack of dawn; so, we didn’t get much sleep. The complimentary breakfast was really […] delicious, which made up for the inconveniences. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We were told when we checked in that there was a dress code and we were not prepared. Made us feel terrible. Breakfast was wonderful. Room was very clean and bed was absolutely the best.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by The Union Club of British Columbia Thank you taking the time to write a review. As a private club, we do have a smart-casual dress code policy at the Club. We are delighted to hear that you had an enjoyable stay otherwise.
"A step into the past"
Old-school hotel, convenient walk to ferries, inner harbor and downtown sights. Established as part of network of residential clubs throughout the commonwealth a century plus ago. Just the place for those who like to dress for dinner. There actually is a dress code. Women now admitted.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"excellent location, elegant hotel"
lovely hotel. however, both the verbal description of the room and the picture provided indicate a bedroom and separate sitting room. that is not what they consider a "standard" room, but rather a suite. i booked here because i thought i was getting the separate sitting area, which was not the case. in fact the room, while lovely and beautifully kept, […] was on the small side, especially at the end of a long trip. also clawfoot bathtubs, while again lovely, do not make good showers, even when adapted. otherwise, very satisfied. Response by The Union Club of British Columbia Dear Cheryl, Thank you kindly for taking the time to provide your recent experience at the Club. We are so glad to hear you received such excellent service (I will be sure to pass on your gratitude to the staff) and your stay was so enjoyable. You are correct in noting the dress code and regarding the adults only; this is from 11 am onward. Children are allowed to attend the breakfast area up until this time. Thank you again for your review and all the best!
"historic, but dilapidated"
Essentially without service. Clean small rooms, without any a/c, ancient bath tub with terrible plumbing. Over-priced for what is offered. They should clearly state that in order to preserve their historic feel, that have no intention of offering modern conveniencesGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by The Union Club of British Columbia Dear Brian, Thank you for taking the time to provide a review of your recent experience at the Union Club. We are currently renovating our hotel rooms, including adding brand new bathrooms to each room! We have completed the renovations over half of the rooms and will do the remainder next Fall. Thank you again for the feedback, as it enables us to further ourselves as an excellent accommodation provider in Victoria.
"Convenient Location for Downtown Victoria"
The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was delicious. However, during breakfast, a "member" of the hotel asked the server (we overheard the conversation) if the dress code was lax lately. My husband and I knew about the dress code and asked the staff if it was okay if we had breakfast there because we had jeans on. The staff said yes since it […] was breakfast. Response by The Union Club of British Columbia Dear Christy, Thank you for your positive review. I am sorry you felt the room was smaller than the pictures you saw online. We have several different room types, all of different sizes and inclusions. Perhaps on your next visit to Victoria, a Harbour Suite may be something you prefer. This room is quite large and overlooks the inner harbour. Regarding our dress code, before 9:30am we allow a relaxed smart-casual attire. After this time, it is smart-casual, with no blue jeans, runners and other similar items. Thank you again for taking the time to provide feedback.
The room was very clean and comfortable...but no in room coffee. I surprised an elderly gentleman in a suit and cravat by sneaking into the lobby at 630 in murine to grab a cup of coffee. This was a very nice change from the regular corp hotel. This is a really beautiful building in a very central location. The staff were good and the breakfast was very yummy. "An outstanding - but thankfully not for everyone"
I travel quite a bit and so have stayed at many hotels. The Union Club of British Columbia is one of the best I have stayed at. It has beautiful classic decor. It is quiet, classy, and the service is personalized. Having said that, it is not for everyone. It really is run like an old fashioned club. As an example, I arrived from my flight at 11:30pm […] to find the door locked and a note to call the night watchman. I did, and he opened the door to a darkened lobby. But he had my key and I went right to my room with the watchman wishing me a goodnight and telling me to stop at the desk in the morning to leave my credit card information. How many hotels do you know would give you a room without taking your credit card? But if you need a traditional hotel with someone at the desk 24/7 the union club is not for you. The Union Club also has a dress code, so if you live inT shirts, jeans and sneakers it is not for you. I enjoyed having people dressed nicely for breakfast (which was outstanding in a truly classic dining room) and sitting around the club. Finally, this is not a hotel for families with kids. It values quiet and noisy kids are not appropriate. It is hard to find a hotel that gives you sanctuary from the noise families with children bring and I greatly appreciated that. The location can't be beat- it is right in the heart of downtown Victoria. All in all, an outstanding hotel for those who want an old fashioned and classy hotel experience. "Great hotel - don't forget about the dress code"
Great place, very friendly staff. Fantastic scotch selection at the bar (84!) Don't forget about the dress code. No denim if you stay in the lobby/lounge for tea or the bar or the billiard room. No t-shirts, no sneakers, no jackets with a name on them and...no cell phones!! Yeah! a victory for silence! Fine for me but some might find it stuffy.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Not a great stay. To start, I was given a parking ticket - I parked directly under the sign that read, "Hotel Parking - 10 minutes", the Hotel was not willing or able to address what had happened. We read online about the dress code inside the hotel so we were prepared to not wear jeans or t shirts inside the lounge area but did see others in jeans so don't think it's strictly enforced. The Union Club is a private members' club, not a traditional hotel, so it felt different than any place I have stayed. We stayed three nights in a modest, older room facing the interior court yard. We chose this room for value and to avoid street noise. The public rooms on the main floor, library, reading room, dining room, and bar, are so fabulous that you will not want to spend any time in your own room ! The included breakfast was excellent with newspapers provided. We returned for dinner by the wood burning fireplace and were very impressed. The markup on wines is very small ! You cannot wear blue jeans and running shoes in the public rooms after 9:30 am.
"Unbelievable Location, Exceptional Service, Unbeatable Value"
12/02/14 TravelOften1968 Johannesburg, South Africa
The Union Club is Victoria's oldest (founded 1879) and pretty much only private members club. It has been home to every Premier of the Province and most business leaders since that time. It used to be a men only Club but now has a healthy mix of men and women members. Lots of new members are also bringing down the average age (which has been a bit old). The Club has 22 hotel rooms (including seven suites) which are generally reserved for members, guests of members and members of affiliated clubs (there are about 450 such clubs) but also available the public on a discrete basis. The availability of these rooms to the public is a well kept secret. The hotel rooms are technically labelled as 'The Inn at the Union Club' but they form an essential part of the Club. The rooms are quite spacious. They have recently been upgraded and match the finest hotel rooms you will find anywhere else in the City. Most have sitting rooms. The beds are large and comfortable. The only downside is the bathrooms, which are a bit small but perhaps expected in rooms that were originally built over 100 years ago. They have done their best to update the bathrooms with what they have, but newer hotel rooms definitely have more spacious bathroom facilities. The amenities at the Club are fantastic. There is a full dining room that includes a great breakfast. In the summer, the Terrace Lounge also gives you a spectacular patio view of Victoria's Inner Harbour that can only be matched by the view from the Empress Hotel. There is a reading room, a library, a billiards room and meeting rooms. There is a gym (pretty basic, but does the job). There is a business centre (pretty basic, but does the job). If you have a car, the Club has free parking, either at the Club or next to the Club. The location cannot be beaten. The Club is in the heart of downtown Victoria across the street from the Empress Hotel, one of the grand dames of Canadian hotels. From the Union Club you can reach every major tourism attraction except Butchart Gardens in walking distance. Public transportation is a breeze. If you come in the summer, there are a great variety of street artists and performers on the Inner Harbour that you can walk down to see. The Symphony Splash is a fantastic even that can be viewed from the Terrace at the Club (reservations essential). Many good restaurants are within walking distance. The service is exceptional. From the reception to the dining room and housekeeping service, the Club delivers friendly, first class service that is professional but not intrusive. The Union Club is generally a calm place. There is a dress code and this can be inconvenient at times, but they seem to accept that you can pop into and out of the Club in casual wear if you are staying in one of the hotel rooms. You cannot just go to other parts of the club in jeans or shorts, cut off pants or t shirts. The Club is also probably not the most child friendly place to stay if you have a young family. The hotel rooms and Club facilities can definitely accommodate children, but they will not be able to run around or make loud noises without incurring the wrath of Club members. The best part of all of this, the prices for hotel rooms at the Union Club are half of those at the Empress Hotel, particularly in peak seasons. Members, guest of members and members at affiliated clubs get a reduced rate, but even the guest rate beats the rates from the Empress Hotel and other hotels in the area by a far margin. Combined with the location, quality of the rooms, quality of service and expansive amenities available in the Club, the room prices deliver unbeatable value for any stay in Victoria. Business or pleasure, best deal in the City for accommodation.
"One of the most elegant hotels to stay in Victoria"
10/19/14 WeekendReviewers Victoria, Canada
We stayed in the King Suite which is on the top floor corner facing the empress and has an ocean view from the bathroom window, and it had such a welcoming smell when we walked in. We didn't care if it didn't have a view because it was like an apartment, and if we want to see the ocean we went outside. The building is incredible and although is very old, doesn't have that "old building" smell which can be present in some heritage buildings, and the elevator is something to see as well. We had dinner in their main restaurant and their food was absolutely incredible, the pork tenderloin was one of the best I've eaten and was very reasonably priced. Everything about the Union Club is wonderful, from their staff, to the other guests and if you have an opportunity to stay... I highly recommended it.

Great place to stay! Very comfortable poster bed in reasonably sized room. Staff was friendly and very conveniently located to all the shopping and eateries you'll need. Old time elevator was neat to use.

I chose to see how the other half live and stayed in an inn far above my station in life. I almost feel unworthy to rate a place who's hallowed halls have sheltered royalty and the elite/old money families of Victoria. Normally the Union club does not allow non-members to hire the inn rooms. It may be, though I have not been able to determine, that when there is a low demand among club members that they will let out the inn suites. I got mine through expedia. One of the first things I learned was that I was required to dress formally if I wished to dine in the grand dining room. Since I was in the midst of moving to a new apartment I did not have a dinner jacket readily available. It is permitted to dine in the McGregor lounge with dress shirt sans tie for breakfast. I had an amazing eggs benedict with smoked salmon. The premises are over 100 years old. I could almost hear the ghosts of functions past emanating from the fine dark hardwood wainscoting and ancient chandeliers. The tub in my room was unlike any plumbing fixture I have ever seen. It was deep and gigantic. There was a fitness centre right on my floor. The darling filipino maids are convinced there are ghosts haunting the club. Each room has its own cable modem with wifi that had maximum speed and unrestricted access. Located directly next to the Fairmont Empress. There is a rooftop garden patio where one can sit and view the harbour and parliament building. They have a past president library where you can sit and read in absolute quiet. I really believe that you must at least once in your life rub shoulders with the upper class and see what that lifestyle has to offer. The Union Club of British Columbia is a must try in my book.
"Lovely rooms, great staff"
10/03/14 Shelley G Vancouver, Canada
We stayed 1 night recently at the Union Club our second visit, this stay just as good as the first. If you love character than you'll enjoy your stay which is why we enjoy staying here. Love the wood panelling on the walls in the lobby, the original elevator and the canopy king bed (which was very comfy). The room was adequate and clean, enjoyed the rain shower and the walk in closet. Our breakfast was included in the price of our stay - not a buffet but a lovely one in the dining room with lots of menu choices. The staff here are wonderful and very professional - we recently stayed at the Harrison Hot Springs Hotel and Spa where the customer service was totally non existent so nice to stay where you feel welcome and your business is appreciated. Well done Union Club.... The reason for not giving 5 stars is the parking - there is no on site parking only street parking or a parking lot around the corner for $12.50. We managed to luck out and get street parking across the street but beware of the Victoria traffic officers who are quick to ticket because the parking is only free from 6pm to 9am and then the meter is only for max. 90 minutes.

My husband and I and our friends, another couple with whom we often travel, spent two nights at this charming hotel in Victoria. With only 23 rooms this gentlemen's club provides a quiet elegance in a warm, cozy atmosphere. We loved its old fashioned charm……a large parlor room with comfortable sofas and chairs conducive to reading the many magazines and newspapers available to guests, a card table which was perfect for our bridge game, a library with a wonderful selection of books, and a billiard room. The dining area was inviting, the menu diverse and the food excellent. We ate breakfast there both mornings and dinner one evening…delicious food and beautiful presentation. We had two outstanding servers--Kaleema and Kami. They were delightful... engaging, helpful, and efficient. The hotel's location is extremely convenient to the inner harbor, Parliament building, town center and numerous restaurants as well as the historic Empress Hotel. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating as well. Highly recommend…..a most enjoyable stay.
"Disappointing stay but not the fault of the Union Club"

We looked forward to our return to the Union Club after our stay 7 years ago when I proposed to my wife in a horse drawn carriage on our way to a wonderful evening and long weekend in Victoria. We had reserved the same 2nd floor corner suite overlooking the harbor. All was set for a wonderful celebration. It was a warm beautiful weekend. We rented a scooter just around the block in back of the Empress and spent our first day motoring the shoreline around the city. We returned in the late afternoon opened the windows of room to cool off and enjoy the ocean air (there is no air conditioning at the Union Club) Cutting to the chase...the street "musicians" on the corner in front of our room really spoiled the stay. We had no option but to open our windows because of the warm weather to help cool our room down. We were forced to listen to the constant drumming and horn noise being made for several hours over our 2 1/2 day stay. It was horribly annoying. My advise to the desk manager was to join forces with others in the hospitality business in the neighborhood and address the city council. I am certain all the guests in the harbor view rooms at the Empress would have experienced the same racket. It was really disappointing because we love the Union Club and Victoria and have such warm memories of our first visit.
"Union Club, Victoria BC, 2014-08"

Victoria is a beautiful city for sight seeing on foot, shopping and good quality dinning. I had my first stay at the Union Club on September 8. It is a fine traditional late Victorian period land mark building a short walk from the many amenities of the city such as the Government street shopping and restaurants, The Empress hotel, the Provincial museum and Imax theatre, the Provincial Legislature and many Victorian period historic sites. The lovely shoe line walks begins just two blocks away and allows short or long walks around the straits of Juan de Fuca shore and the Inner Harbour. The residence is clean, quiet and appointed in the style of a Victorian era private club with the amenities of athletic truing facilities, billiard room, dining room and lounges. The original Otis elevator is unique and functional. The breakfast service is excellent. The service is impeccable in keeping with the Victorian period. Historic paintings, sculptures and histories add to the sense of being in an earlier place and time. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and plan to return.

Checked in, and was told there is no parking on site and that I could pull out front and unload my bags, came back out to the car and there was a $40 ticket. I brought it to the desk and they said oh you can take it to city hall and ask them to dismiss it, someone earlier had the same thing happen! A)This happened before? B) I didn't really want to spend my vacation at city hall for something I was told by the hotel was ok to do. Ok then there was the issue of parking, had to drive my car 2 blocks away to a parking deck, I was given a voucher for ONE night to place on my windshield so I wouldn't get a TICKET, I would then need to go back the next day and bring a new voucher over, one for every day, I was told they were out of vouchers and basically needed to deal with it, I walked to parking deck to tell the attendant the hotel was out of vouchers he gave me a business card and said hotel needs to call their office and ask for more cards, so I walked back to hotel and asked them to call. I still wanted to sightsee at some point, I was told by attendant that I needed to have the new vouchers on my car by 6. I went walking and hotel called me that vouchers were ready, I walked back to hotel then back to parking deck. Day one..welcome to Victoria. guess I will be going to city hall Monday.
