"historic, but dilapidated"
Essentially without service. Clean small rooms, without any a/c, ancient bath tub with terrible plumbing. Over-priced for what is offered. They should clearly state that in order to preserve their historic feel, that have no intention of offering modern conveniencesGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient Location for Downtown Victoria"
The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was delicious. However, during breakfast, a "member" of the hotel asked the server (we overheard the conversation) if the dress code was lax lately. My husband and I knew about the dress code and asked the staff if it was okay if we had breakfast there because we had jeans on. The staff said yes since it […] was breakfast. The room was clean but not like the advertisements showed at all. The room was much smaller. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The room was very clean and comfortable...but no in room coffee. I surprised an elderly gentleman in a suit and cravat by sneaking into the lobby at 630 in murine to grab a cup of coffee. Save time in the am for breakfast. wonderful menu, real linens, perfectly cooked. Staff are great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Feels like going back in time"
This was a very nice change from the regular corp hotel. This is a really beautiful building in a very central location. The staff were good and the breakfast was very yummy. I would recommend this place it's great just remember this is a club with a lot of tradition. They do have a dress code so don't wear your board shorts and tank tops and you will […] love the place. "An outstanding - but thankfully not for everyone"
I travel quite a bit and so have stayed at many hotels. The Union Club of British Columbia is one of the best I have stayed at. It has beautiful classic decor. It is quiet, classy, and the service is personalized. Having said that, it is not for everyone. It really is run like an old fashioned club. As an example, I arrived from my flight at 11:30pm […] to find the door locked and a note to call the night watchman. I did, and he opened the door to a darkened lobby. But he had my key and I went right to my room with the watchman wishing me a goodnight and telling me to stop at the desk in the morning to leave my credit card information. How many hotels do you know would give you a room without taking your credit card? But if you need a traditional hotel with someone at the desk 24/7 the union club is not for you. The Union Club also has a dress code, so if you live inT shirts, jeans and sneakers it is not for you. I enjoyed having people dressed nicely for breakfast (which was outstanding in a truly classic dining room) and sitting around the club. Finally, this is not a hotel for families with kids. It values quiet and noisy kids are not appropriate. It is hard to find a hotel that gives you sanctuary from the noise families with children bring and I greatly appreciated that. The location can't be beat- it is right in the heart of downtown Victoria. All in all, an outstanding hotel for those who want an old fashioned and classy hotel experience. "Great hotel - don't forget about the dress code"
Great place, very friendly staff. Fantastic scotch selection at the bar (84!) Don't forget about the dress code. No denim if you stay in the lobby/lounge for tea or the bar or the billiard room. No t-shirts, no sneakers, no jackets with a name on them and...no cell phones!! Yeah! a victory for silence! Fine for me but some might find it stuffy.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"An absolute gem"
This historic hotel is perfectly situated for sightseeing in Victoria. It's close to everything you'd want to see; parking is close by, and the common areas of the hotel are very stately and posh. The breakfast was wonderful I'd like to make a special note of Justin, who checked us in when we arrived, and was informative, gracious, hilarious, and full […] of bits of local lore (and great restaurant recs, especially given the late hour!). Book this again, no hesitation. You won't beat it for Victoria. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"in the centre"
The club ambience, service, and food is outstanding. The room smallish, but comfortable and quiet. Bathroom needed work, but lots of room and heated separately, unlike most hotels. Excellent toiletries and plenty of plush towels. Note there is a no jeans dress code past the reception area. However, knowing that, it ought not to be a problem for most […] traveller's. The included breakfast is terrific, with wonderful and varied menu. Excellent coffee and tea are always available near reception. Having a coffee while reading the morning paper in the reading room is an experience not to be missed. Off site, secure parking is available nearby at a very reasonable rate and is not inconvenient. "Exclusive feel and great location"
The Union Club is a private members' club, not a traditional hotel, so it felt different than any place I have stayed. While it comes with some trade-offs (dress code in the lounge and restaurant, for example), the service is friendly, the rooms are unique in an antique sort of way, and the included breakfast, prepared by the club's restaurant, is the […] best I've ever had included with a room. This was my very first time to stay a hotel with over 100 years history. Bathroom was a bit small but the bed and resting area were very comfy. The staffs were super friendly and helpful. "Great location and wonderful historic charm"
07/21/14 SandyInOly Olympia, Washington
Wow! This place is located across the street from the Empress and overlooking the harbor from about 2 blocks away. It's also just a short walk from the ferry which we found very convenient. We absolutely loved the historic "old gentleman's club" charm of this place with the amazing woodwork throughout. The reading rooms were fantastic and we could have spent hours lingering there. We even found an old bible from the 1800's on the shelf! A great collection of books await you here. There's complimentary coffee and tea throughout the day, and even a wonderful outside deck to sit on and look out at the water. The complimentary breakfast was quite yummy, but I do think they require formal wear, which we did not mind at all. The staff was very friendly to us, allowing us to store our luggage before and after check-in and check-out. The rooms were small but sufficient and simple. The bed was quite comfortable. The shower water kind of fluctuates between hot and cold at times, but it was still acceptable. This place has an feeling of stateliness and class. I wouldn't recommend it for travelers with young children because it's so extremely quiet everywhere you go. Thankfully we were not with our two young kids. We imagined if we had been we'd be shushing them constantly, like in a library. Oh, and the old fashion elevator lift was charming. This place is well worth the price and then some. I'd much rather stay here any day of the week than the overcrowded, overpriced Empress across the street. We would definitely stay here again, and hope to soon!
"Unique, comfortable and accommodating"
06/15/14 Terry D Parksville, Canada
We stayed three nights at the Union Club in Victoria on the occasion of a family wedding. We had two nights in a single room and one night in a suite. The Union Club is celebrating its 125th year, 101 of those years at its current location in downtown Victoria. Despite its stately age the rooms and amenities are modern and comfortable. A delicious made-to-order served breakfast with all the trimmings was included with our room each day (brunch included on a weekend). The Union Club is located just steps from the Inner Harbour and downtown shopping, dining and entertainment. Free parking is available in a nearby parkade or on-street (after hours). The staff were very helpful and accommodating at all times.
"The next best thing to being a member..."

One of the oldest, still beautiful buildings in lovely downtown Victoria, I had had occasion to dine there once a few years ago, as a guest of the Lieutenant Governor Stephen Pointe (ok, there were about 30 other guests, too, but still, it was an honour). I was delighted to discover that this private club has a few hotel rooms that it rents to, well, anyone--even me! I stay in Victoria a few times a year-- usually at The Chateau (see my reviews), but I fancied a change, and the chance to see inside the beautiful building again. I was not disappointed. From the kind and friendly counter staff to the efficient and calm breakfast server, the cordial nods of the members, to the solicitous and polite chamber staff, this may be my new "go to" hotel....in fact I've already reserved a room for my trip next week. I guess there is nothing there you can't find in other elegant hotels, but to me it was absolutely magical being steeped in all that history-- I felt a bit like I'd snuck into Hogwarts or something. I would recommend the Union Club for anyone who wanted a quiet get-away. Definitely secure for a woman traveling alone, and terrific value, even before you consider the complimentary coffee and tea (real tea pots!) and breakfast (eggs benedict, available on grilled tomato instead of english muffin, with spinach and chevre-- fantastic). I suppose the one drawback is the parking--prepare to walk a couple of blocks, but there is an easy to get to courtesy spot right out front to unload/load up). There is probably a level entry for disabled guests, I imagine, but there is a gorgeous stone stairway leading up to the main entrance. The location is unbeatable, however, and I can't wait to be back.... Although I am staying for business, even when I travel for pleasure, I don't tend to grub around in jeans and a T-Shirt. If that is your standard attire, you might want to be sure you review the dress code. If you are the sort of person who is offended by tradition and standards, and who thinks private clubs are snobby, this is not the destination for you. If you are open to wonderful, unexpected surprises and think dressing up is a treat, perhaps I'll see you on the elevator (oh... the elevator alone is worth the stay.....)

What a great venue for our annual MahJongg Retreat!! We all agree there isn't a better choice than our own private club: a luxurious suite to set up our tiles for hours of uninterrupted play; excellent food and drink choices from the McGregor Room lunch and dinner menus and the club wine list; such comfortable bedrooms to eventually retire to; and delicious breakfasts. Such a wonderful experience...perhaps we should do this spring AND fall!?!

We came to Victoria to celebrate our annual Company New Year Christmas Party. We were lucky to get the last Room at the Union Club. The location is amazing. The room has been cozy and beautiful - set in an old-fashioned style, but with all the modern amenities.. and very clean! The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful - like Sophie who helped us to book the room at the last moment. Breakfast was served in a beautiful dining room, giving you the feeling of the most posh environment. Breakfast was very good, nice variety to choose from and the service was great. No doubt- we will come again! .p.s. the party we attended in the Union Club, first floor hall, was amazing and the food served was superb.

Overall, we enjoyed out stay. The facility is very grand, but the actual rooms are outdated and could use a freshening up. The service was good and the included breakfast was terrific. Would likely stay here again, given the reasonable price compared to the Fairmont next door.

We were very pleased with our newly rennovated queen suite. As with all of our Canadian affiliate private clubs, the food and service was outstanding. Breakfast was included with a full menu choice. I loved having a fitness center on my floor. We also used the complimentry laundry.A perfect location in downtown Victoria on the harbour!!!

Wonderful property with history. Excellent location, comfort very reasonable for a traditional property. We had an excellent breakfast and felt our room rate was very competitive for the room size and location. Would always return and recommend to adult travelers.

A true 'gentleman's club' atmosphere in a superb location. A few steps up to the entrance of the but worth the effort. Don't expect a porter to come to your aid - there appear to be none. Spacious, a little quaint and with a dress code that may not suit very casual travellers, but which was not too demanding in the breakfast room at least. Welcoming and helpful staff, and an excellent breakfast. Very well located, a stone's throw from the harbour with its many activities/attractions.
