This was a fun change of pace on our 2 week road trip. A private club, it's rooms are small, but comfortable with an old world charm. Very casual dressers have to stick to the lobby and their room, but throw on a pair of khakis and you can enjoy the reading room, billiard room and restaurants/bars. Breakfast included with a very nice variety of items to choose from (and casual is ok in the morning!). Location was terrific, close to the waterfront, government buildings and museums.

"property does not disclose construction"
Undisclosed prior to our arrival there was construction at the property blocking harbor views for which we paid extra. Also, construction workers routinely walked by windows with clear line of sight to everything inside. When checking out I asked to reduce the rate consistent with the same room type without the view, and the representative suggested contacting the manager on the next business day, and all such attempts (phone calls, email) went unanswered.

"Classic elegance"
Very elegant and classic old world hotel with magnificent common areas and a strict dress code..(we didn't know about this as it is a private club). Everything was great but the best part was that the breakfast voucher could also be used for brunch which could be a full meal. This worked out great for our family and saved us some money.

"Fabulous Place To Stay!"
We are two retired couples visiting Victoria for one night stay. The location was fabulous as we walked off the ferry and walked to the hotel. We were able to check our bags at 10 am so we could go out for the rest of the day. Staff was friendly, room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was amazing. This hotel is formal and may not be the best place for a young couple or family with small children. Just my thought. We absolutely loved it!

"Never again and please list the Dress Code Policy"
The location is excellent, right next to the Harbor and the Fairmont Empress, but parking is several blocks away and $12.50 per night. The front desk staff (Katie in particular) and the breakfast waiter (NOT the waitress Gabriella) were very nice and the breakfast was excellent. BUT, there IS a Dress Code which was not mentioned during booking. We were told at check in we were allowed to be below code at breakfast, entering and leaving our room, and getting coffee, as long as we took it back to our room. We were not allowed any place else on the premise. AND, although we were told it was ok, members gave us snobbish disapproving looks and loudly asked the staff what happened to the dress code at breakfast. It wasn't pleasant being treated like second rate peons. We left early and found other accommodations.

"The Good and The Bad"
Overnight on my way hone after a long trip. Great place but clients should know aabout men's nights etc. Also I had a serious alergy reactiion waiting in the Club room after I checked out of my room and before the ferry. I was sitting in a upholstered chair. Once I got outside it went away but for a while I thought I would not be able to go to the ferry and would miss my plane. So nice as it was I probably would not stay a second time. Also the stairs upon arrival are not expected and very intimidating. Once you were inside you learned of an alter exit but upon arrival you don't know about it and if you did you wouldn't have a key.

We were both pleased with this choice for our hotel stay. It's a rather small hotel, but the location is ideal for walking to just about anywhere. While very charming, the rooms are on the smaller side and the building is old, but they have done a good job maintaining the rooms and updating for a clean-antique feel. One thing to note was our reservation said free breakfast and then at the bottom of our reservation it said a $20/pp fee charged for breakfast. It was indeed free and the breakfast is outstanding. Excellent food and a big enough portion to keep you full all morning! They also had a nice coffee/tea bar available in the lobby 24/7 and newspapers to read. There is a dress-code for the hotel after 9:30am. This is not a bad note, but we were surprised by it and didn't have dress clothes for the day time. While it keeps patrons all looking classy, I wish I wouldn't have brought flip-flops and jeans for day attire. We were told parking would be a few blocks away in a garage for $13/day, so elected to park for free at night on the street - you just have to be out by 9am or pay the meter $3/hr - and you may have to walk a bit. Other reviewers weren't thrilled with the pillows/mattress in their rooms and we can both attest the pillows were not comfortable. Returning here I would bring my own. All that said, we would most definitely stay here again for the reasons: location, cleanliness, breakfast, and value.

"Nice find!"
Very nice hotel a block for the harbor and The Empress Hotel and shops and restaurants. The hotel in it's heyday was an exclusive club for the well heeled and old family set. The architecture is stunning. We happened to check in while a roaring twenties party was almost in full swing. Many people of all ages in original couture and period clothing. Coupled with the original 1800's decor, it was like walking into a Fitzgerald book before the crash. A lot of 1st and 2nd WW plaques with names of club members who lost their lives overseas. The building and decor is steeped in Canadian history. They do not allow jeans after 9 am and have a strict policy on mobile phone use in the lobby and massive sitting room. Very good internet access, quiet rooms and our stay came with a complimentary breakfast which was great. Fabulous original bar and snooker room.

"Charming Historical Building"
The hotel is in a charming historical building and walking distance to all downtown must-see sights. To access the front desk, which is on the second floor, we had to lug up the luggage up the stairs. In the morning, the seagulls outside the window start squawking at the crack of dawn; so, we didn’t get much sleep. The complimentary breakfast was really delicious, which made up for the inconveniences.

"excellent location, elegant hotel"
lovely hotel. however, both the verbal description of the room and the picture provided indicate a bedroom and separate sitting room. that is not what they consider a "standard" room, but rather a suite. i booked here because i thought i was getting the separate sitting area, which was not the case. in fact the room, while lovely and beautifully kept, was on the small side, especially at the end of a long trip. also clawfoot bathtubs, while again lovely, do not make good showers, even when adapted. otherwise, very satisfied.

"Convenient Location for Downtown Victoria"
The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was delicious. However, during breakfast, a "member" of the hotel asked the server (we overheard the conversation) if the dress code was lax lately. My husband and I knew about the dress code and asked the staff if it was okay if we had breakfast there because we had jeans on. The staff said yes since it was breakfast. The room was clean but not like the advertisements showed at all. The room was much smaller.

Dear Christy, Thank you for your positive review. I am sorry you felt the room was smaller than the pictures you saw online. We have several different room types, all of different sizes and inclusions. Perhaps on your next visit to Victoria, a Harbour Suite may be something you prefer. This room is quite large and overlooks the inner harbour. Regarding our dress code, before 9:30am we allow a relaxed smart-casual attire. After this time, it is smart-casual, with no blue jeans, runners and other similar items. Thank you again for taking the time to provide feedback.

"An outstanding - but thankfully not for everyone"
I travel quite a bit and so have stayed at many hotels. The Union Club of British Columbia is one of the best I have stayed at. It has beautiful classic decor. It is quiet, classy, and the service is personalized. Having said that, it is not for everyone. It really is run like an old fashioned club. As an example, I arrived from my flight at 11:30pm to find the door locked and a note to call the night watchman. I did, and he opened the door to a darkened lobby. But he had my key and I went right to my room with the watchman wishing me a goodnight and telling me to stop at the desk in the morning to leave my credit card information. How many hotels do you know would give you a room without taking your credit card? But if you need a traditional hotel with someone at the desk 24/7 the union club is not for you. The Union Club also has a dress code, so if you live inT shirts, jeans and sneakers it is not for you. I enjoyed having people dressed nicely for breakfast (which was outstanding in a truly classic dining room) and sitting around the club. Finally, this is not a hotel for families with kids. It values quiet and noisy kids are not appropriate. It is hard to find a hotel that gives you sanctuary from the noise families with children bring and I greatly appreciated that. The location can't be beat- it is right in the heart of downtown Victoria. All in all, an outstanding hotel for those who want an old fashioned and classy hotel experience.

"Paid for View, but did not have a view."
We liked the hotel overall, although it is a bit pretentious. We paid extra for a room with a view, but when we arrived work was being done on the outside of the hotel. The whole building was covered in green mesh which obstructed the view some what and in our room plastic had fallen in front of the window, so our view was very obscured. When we asked for a discount due to paying extra for a view and we did not have a view, we were told that they are not giving discounts for the renovations. Had we been told before hand we would have cancelled and booked elsewhere. But we did not know about their renovations until we arrived and it was impossible to get another room in Victoria on that week-end. The room was very nice and clean, location is great.

Great location we saw lots of Victoria considering we were only there the one day. There was dress code which we were not aware of so could not wonder around hotel as we did not have proper attire with us. "charming hotel in a great location"
Our stay was very good - dress code not a problem - breakfast was very good - not a buffet as expected - you order off a menu so allow yourself a little more time for breakfast. Would have been helpful to know that street parking is free after 6pm until 9am before we paid for the off site parking. This was a hassle for us as the parking lot closes at 7pm and after that if you want to get in you have to get a key from the hotel. There was only 1 key and when we needed to use it it was not available. Bed was very comfortable and clean. Would stay here again

"A two dressed up to be a nine"
This is a private club that has opened some rooms to probably offset the expense of exclusivity. The common areas that you are allowed to enter if you follow the strict dress code are nice. The breakfast is good and the neighbourhood/ location is excellent. The room #208 was horrific. Not at all like ANY of the pictures on the site. The tub's finish is in very bad condition, peeling with sharp edges. The window in the bathroom overlooks a dingy shaft that you must open for air circulation. No AC in the room. Cobwebs in the corners of the room. Dirty carpet, filthy tile in the bathroom, tub does not drain properly, the room has a very old and stale smell. Almost a smell of urine. Remove the pomp and ceremony of what this club is trying to portray and you have a one or two star hotel room. We will not be back. Lots of options in Victoria that portray exactly what you get via their website with no surprises when you get there! The dress code should be clearly stated prior to booking.

"Creepy hotel"
The windows in the room and the bathroom were old style wooden type windows that you lift up to open and they don't lock! I had a room on the first floor and I could literally just go out the window and into someone else's room as I assume their windows didn't lock either. I was too afraid to stay at this hotel and decided to find another one instead.
