March 16-23, 2013 We loved it. Just a few easily resolved issues. Since we booked thru hotels.com, we didn't have airport transport included. They put us in the wrong vehicle. We saw other resorts as people in the van were dropped off. Then they realized we were in the wrong taxi, but we were taken to our resort. Language barrier. Then leaving the resort, […] they thought we had pre-arranged transport. Took about half an hour with no one taking us for me to get them to get us a taxi. Language again. At the resort about the only thing that caused very slight issues was a shower curtain not long enough to keep water IN the shower (so we used the tub with hose/shower head. Sometimes the water wasn't hot. I have back issues, so the hard bed was a problem after the first night. I asked for 3 blankets, which I tri-folded and put under the bottom sheet, giving me 9 layers of softening. We loved the resort. Large pool and beach great. Lots of chairs/shaded areas. Never felt crowded. Food was good for buffets. Lots of variety. Ate in the Italian, Japanese and Steak restaurants. All great. We definitely recommend Catalonia Bavaro. Just one word about coming home. The airport is small and under-staffed. On a Saturday, thousands of people are leaving. TWO people checking passports. Make sure you allow a LOT of time to get thru all that. We were there 3 hours before our flight, and we only waited about half an hour for our flight boarded. Read more

We went there with our family and absolutely loved it! The staff was great, especially the servers working in the restaurants and buffets. The room was what I expected, the beach was beautiful, but the food was poor. It is listed as a 5 star resort on their website. Breakfast was typical for an all inclusive, service at both buffets was unhelpful. During the day, it was stews, potatoes and rice. Nothing authentic, or seasoned with any herbs or spices. On the 4th night we were going to try the steakhouse, but the hostess told us that the Japanese rest would be closed the next day. So we went to Japanese instead, the next night we go to the Steakhouse, it was closed. A board in the lobby that listed the daily restaurant closing, but there should be a full week’s schedule. The drinks were good, but like all the staff there was a language barrier. My husband ordered Manhattans the entire trip, but they were made differently by every bartender. Every place we stopped, we were greeted in Spanish. We are not sure what the assumption of Americans is, is it known that Spanish is widely taught in grade school? I speak some Spanish, but my husband does not, I do not believe the expectation should be of the guests to speak the local language, but vice versa. Our cleaning staff was fine, except on the 4th day we needed some laundry done. We told the cleaning lady, she came in and called a #, and said they would pick it up in 5 mins. While my experience at Hotel Catalonia (Bavaro) was not completely terrible, I would never stay there again. 1. THERE IS NO HOT WATER FOR SHOWERING. We turned on the hot water to the soaking tub, but only cold water came out. When we turned the shower over to "hot", with the exception of a small drip, there was no water. They simply said they have that problem (no hot water) throughout the resort. 2. THERE IS NO INTERNET IN THE ROOMS. We chose this hotel over another because it offered free internet. Although the Catalonia Bavaro boasts "free wi-fi" and the rooms have "wi-fi zone" signs, there is no internet in the rooms. It is only in the lobby and it is very intermittent. We brought our concerns to the front desk but he simply said they only have internet in the lobby. 3. THE PILLOWS ARE LUMPY & THE BEDS WERE EXTREMELY HARD. The beds are not comfortable. We woke up sore every day. We brought up our concerns to the front desk but they said all of their beds are like that. 4. THE FOOD IS BELOW AVERAGE. Wow the Catalonia Bavario was awesome!! The staff at the hotel were great. At check in I was taken care of quickly and because my room was not ready, they provided me with an upgrade, which was very nice. The Italian restaurant was great, The steak house food was not good, they touted a MD Crabcake, which they should be arrested for saying. MD Crabcakes […] are lump crab meat and they are fried. What they served was not even close. Stop it. The food throughout the resort is excellent they have a large variety and the food is tasty and safe. The rooms, boast soaking tubs, separate showers, comfy beds, flast screens etc. The beach was great with plenty of seating under unbrellas, or on lounge chairs. The pool had plenty of shade and sun. This was just a fantastic experience. They also offered enough activities on the beach to keep you entertained. Please tip, the staff appreciates it.. There is a bank, which needs to be enlarge and be more considerate to it's customers, also check out staff needs to be more considerate as well. My boyfriend and I were looking for one of those lazy, all-inclusive resorts right on the beach on the cheap, and this place was just perfect. It's a bit off the beaten path for travelers wanting to be immersed in DR culture, this isn't the place to be, and it's not in the hub of resorts all in a row on the famous Bavaro beach, but I found that other […] resort goers at nearby resorts were traveling to our hotel for the entertainment, elegant and spacious layout and traveling market. The staff is very courteous and quick to serve, and we found that just giving $1 tips every other time or so when we went up to the bar for a drink resulted in stiffer drinks and a huge smile of appreciation. Most travelers seemed to be from Russia/Eastern Europe, or Spain or France, so American tippers were certainly in the minority. The mixed drinks are sweet and weak, but if you bring your big American water bottle and about $40 in $1's for a week for occasional tips here and there, you'll get that filled stiffly every time you visit the bar. It's amazing how seemless the transition is from beautiful manacured pool area with a swim up barto perfect white sandy beach with hotel supplied lounging chairs under wooden and grass canopies. We had an amazing time, and I'd recommend checking out the excursions offered by the resort salesmen, we went on the speed boat/snorkel tour and had a blast. Read more

The resort itself is gorgeous. However, my friends and I were quickly turned off the first day when we were given a room were the air conditioner was not working and it was extremely hot out. The best part about the hotel was the entertainment! Do not miss out on the theater every night. These dancers may not be the best dancers and yes they do mess up, but they keep your energy up. They make you laugh and you can tell how hard they work everyday to keep up with the different performances. They also talk to the people in the crowd and interact with them. In addition you can't miss out of the beach activities the water aerobics and dancing on the beach is so fun and they really know how to entertain you.
