"Our home away from home"
6th time return traveller to the Lupita. Great staff! Managed very well. We were however quite disappointed with the head office decision whereby Lupita guests can no longer visit the other RIU resorts. The mgmt were very kind and provider 3, 3 days passes to the RIU Playacar because we were caught off guard with the change and no mention of it via […] the travel agent we used (Expedia). The Resort seems to cater mostly to Europeans, especially eastern ones. Very few English speakers so hence, unfriendly and a bit impersonal amongst the other guests. Will likely now, after 6 straight visits to the Luputa pay the up charge and stay at either the Tequila or Playacar, so as to stay at one play at 3 option is available Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Room was so ugly and outdated. Mattress was like a rock no mattress cover just sheet. Towels like cardboard. So disapointing, on the website rooms look much better but in a reality its old and stinky. Food was good . Beach was nice except you have to drive in the shuttle like fifteen min. to the beach. They have two restaurants so little menu nothing […] to pick. The buffet was nice good food and lots of varaities. Staff was nice except in the lobby front desk. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Good price-quality ratio all-inclusive"
We arrived on a Saturday morning very early as we had a red eye flight from LA. However the hotel service was really nice as they allowed us to go to the pool and have meals until we got our room. We were meeting with our family and we asked to be all in the same building and they were able to suit our request, which was nice! The guys at the reception […] speak (at least) Spanish, English, French, they are really nice and helpful. For breakfast they have all you can eat for breakfast (sweet, salted, fruits, etc.) and lots of great drinks with fresh mixed fruits! For lunch and dinner they have salads, fish, meats, lots of side dishes, bread, fruits, cheese, desserts, ice cream, wine, beers... The restaurant was renovated last autumn and it is really well renovated with new table and chairs, modern style. The waiters and waitresses are really nice, they speak a bit english but they appreciate if you try to speak spanish. There are 2 pools, one "noisy" where there are all the animations around and one "relax" pool where it's quiet! The bar next to the "noisy" pool is great, you can order lots of different drinks and cocktails! They have a tennis court that you can rent with rackets & balls. Room was clean, big with a fridge full of drinks (sodas, water and alcohol) refilled every two days. They have a shuttle that takes you to the town & to the beach every 30 minutes. The hotel has a private beach with its own restaurant & a pool near the Riu Palace. The spa (Renova Spa) is good too Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Third time spending Holiday at the Riu Lupita"
Fabulous, safe wonderful hotel! Being all inclusive, it was wonderful with the children being 13, 9 and 5 years old. They would go off for breakfast in the morning, belly up the the Tequila bar and get their frozen drinks. They had a great time as did we.Genuine Expedia guest review
Good location if you want to be near the city. $7 cab ride to 5th avenue, where you can do all of your bargain shopping. You aren't by the beach but there is a shuttle that comes every 30 minutes for free that takes you to Riu Palace which is the entrance to the Lupita Beach club. There you can eat, drink, enjoy the pool and the beach. it's literally […] a 5 minute shuttle ride. The rooms were clean. The pools were clean. The food buffets were decent food. We made reservations at the restaurant our last night and it was pretty good food and they were fast getting the food out. If I had to complain about anything it would be the mattress, which was hard as a rock. However, before booking this resort I read about 50 other hotel reviews and ALL reviews mentioned that their mattresses were hard throughout Playa Del Carmen!! The staff were excellent in all of our needs and very friendly. Each night for dinner they would have a show or entertainment of some sort. Overall it was a wonderful experience and we would definitely visit again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great customer service"
I've stayed at several other all-inclusive resorts in Playa Del Carmen. Riu Lupita is relatively smaller than the others. However, they make up for this. There is a shuttle to their beach club which stops at 5th avenue every 30mins. Internet is free (90mins a day), other places charge a lot for access. Food was good. Drinks were good; especially since […] the beer was dos equis (XX). The minibar in the room was an actual minibar. Minifridge was stocked and there was a bottle of rum, tequila, gin and vodka in the rooms. I've stayed at other places where the minifridge just has one bottle of water and one soda; with no other drinks. the staff was really friendly and genuinely tried to make us happy. Julie was wonderful and even reserved the restaurant for our group. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Their is nothing in a name."
The question is why would a corporation like RIU with such a good reputation for such high standards keep a place like the Lapita in their crown. Mercedes never built a K car. They built high quality cars and established a name for themselves. Riu, according to my last 6 stays at RIU's other locations, had done the same as Mercedes- or so I thought. […] It does this corporation no good to keep a 2 star like Lapita in the crown. From the food quality and selection, location, rooms, unilingual staff and the grounds all about the Lapita is that it is "OK" that is it. It tarnishes the RIU reputation by having sub standard properties. They should sell it off to "Beaches" or Sandals or some 3 star group. From a marketing and corporate analysis I am at a loss as to why RIU keeps their name of on this property????? Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Stay away from Riu."
The food was awful, I was sick the second nite there. Drinks were very bad tasting, I could drink only whiskey on ice. Forget about the bar in the room no ice and the rum, gin, and vodka were generic and tasted so bad we did not touch it. we tried the two other resorts owned by Riu and they were pretty sad also. We had to go to town to find decent food. All […] inclusive is a trick with this company to lure you in, birds and wild animals come into the dining area as your are eating. Riu Lupita is just ok. My wife and I stayed there for about 5 days, but all we really needed the hotel for was for sleeping and occasional dining. We would leave the hotel after breakfast daily to undertake excursions in the surrounding areas and Cancun. The staff was friendly and helpful. The food was hit or miss (more misses than hits). At one point […] we abandoned lunch, hopped in a taxi to a sushi spot on 5th Ave. Although we knew we had access to the other nicer and bigger nearby Rius, we never had time nor cared to take advantage of that. We weren't there for the hotels. But all and all Riu was okay for our purpose. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"great if youre on a budget"
Stayed here for only 2 nights, and although it is the least fancy of the other Riu hotels in the area, it is also the cheapest, so it makes sense. If you're trying to save money I would stay here because as a guest of Riu Lupita, you get access to use the facilities at the other fancier Rius, Tequila, Playacar and yucatan, which are all within walking […] distance, or a short shuttle bus drive. Playacar and yucatan have nicer, less crowded pools and have access to the beach , which is very nice and clean. you can also get drinks, breakfast and/or lunch at any of the 4 (Just not the Riu palace). The snack bar was okay, can hold you over till the next meal, and the buffet is better. nothing extrodinary, but good. I liked the breakfast buffet more than the dinner buffet. All the staff is super friendly and work hard to serve you, especially the bartenders and servers. "Unforgetable Vacation at Very Special RIU Lupita"
RIU Lupita was exactly what my boyfriend and I were looking for. It was clean with immaculate grounds. All staff members were full of smiles and always warm-welcoming. The dance show was Amazing! The food was surprisingly good; something we looked forward to every day. Our room was pretty nice, but the bathroom was super nice. We got our room cleaned […] almost everyday just so I could get the surprise of seeing the creative and beautiful job the cleaning person would do. She always made us a towel animal like a bunny, a duck, and a monkey. One day it was a very large doll that was about as big as a 4 year old! The day she made the monkey, she made it so the monkey was holding a hibiscus and she had left flower petals neatly arranged in a grid pattern all over the bed with the colorful top sheet pulled into a giant bow. It was amazing! I took pictures everyday! The bed, as other reviewers have said, was a little on the hard side, but honestly, we slept better than we had in a long time with not one complaint. In fact, we are due to get a new mattress and because of our ease of sleep at Lupita and a little recent back pain, we've decided to get a firm bed! Lupita was a bit of a walk from the shopping/touristy area of Playa del Carmen and the beach, but the bus that ran every 15min was very convenient. One night we got the last bus ride (6:45pm) to town to have dinner and shop knowing we'd have to walk home. It turned out to be quite pleasant because the night air was breezy and the surrounding neighborhood was clean and safe. It took us about 30min at a medium pace. During the day on our bus rides to the beach, we always saw families with small children and people exercising in the neighborhood. Lupita was a perfect location to get to the beach, shop, eat out, head off for a tour, or just lay by the pool! There were at least 2 pools (we never did walk the entire grounds to find out if there were more): one that had a pool party everyday at 11:30am and one that was smal Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Not 5 star, but pefect place when on a budget!"
While this isn't a 5 star hotel, we found it perfect for what we needed. The rooms were clean, we weren't staying at the Hilton, so it was just a nice bed and a tv. There was an air conditioning unit in our room and a shower in the bathroom. There was also a nice balcony. The room was stocked with bottled water and the bar. You can tell they were using […] strong cleaning chemical to clean the room every day, but other than that we were pleased with our room. All the staff were super friendly and always answered our questions. Everyone spoke English. The pools and the lounge chairs and hammocks were all wonderful places to hang out. The food was what I expected. Again, it wasn't 5 star, but there were plenty of choices, from American to Italian, to Mexican dishes on the buffet. I enjoyed everything we ate. We would stay there again and the price was right. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Staff is what makes this place amazing!"
Staff is amazing!!!!! Hotel is a bit outdated but is definitely made up for by staff. Food is about a 3 out of 5; same food every day, not high quality and no authentic mexican food, more commercialized. Shuttle offered every 30 minutes to take you to other stops that offer the ocean but bus can be over packed and not convenient. Taxi anywhere in playacar […] is only $7US each way so will not cost much to just get a taxi. Out of all the RIU's offered, RIU Playacar was probably the nicest, RIU Yucatan was over packed and needs more chairs to accomodate. You are not allowed at RIU Palace and another location. Staff is extremely nice but if you are drinking by the pool at the RIU Playacar, be VERY generous on your tipping or they will ignore you; a couple US dollars are definitely not enough for them to care at that location. Staff at ALL other RIU's are amazing, it is only the Playacar that they definitely were not pleasant without generous tipping. Rest of staff is amazing and front desk is exceptional! If you go into town and you want authentic quesadillas, definitely stop at Las Quecas! SUPER amazing, rediculously cheap, and will not upset your stomach! A great bar that is super cheap with specials is the "hidden bar". Great location and will not break you! If you are from the US, I would recommend keeping dollars if you plan to go shopping. It was a wonderful experience. My only complaints are that the bed was not all that comfortable, the ceiling fan was either all the way on or barely turning, and the food was a little lacking on occasion. "Great value, Great service, Ideal Vacation locale"
This was our first stay in Playacar, a gated neighborhood of Playa del Carmen, and an ideal vacation spot. Most of the resorts here that we saw were beachfront and much more upscale, so this seems to be a way to stay in Playacar on the cheap. For total value, this can't be beat. The service was great - very friendly. The atmosphere was very laid back […] and friendly, too. There seemed to be few Americans, but many people from many different countries. Lupita isn't beachfront, but a free shuttle takes you from the hotel to the beach, with a stop near Playa del Carmen downtown, and it was easy and convenient. Lupita has its own beach "club" (snack bar, beers, tables, loungers, bathrooms) but we walked down to nearby Riu Playacar, one of the beachfront Riu properties that we had full access to, which had a bigger pool w/a full swimup bar, and bigger/better snack offerings at non-meal times. That is also where the beach water activities are (snorkel equip., kayaks, catamarans). The food was just so-so, and the snack bar at Lupita was especially unappetizing. Only one "special" restaurant for dinner at Lupita, and the menu was very limited. Nightly entertainment was surprisingly very good, and the kids who were there all seemed to be having a blast with the entertainment staff, who were all great. The beds were very hard and uncomfortable, rickety stairs led to 2/3 floor rooms, but otherwise the rooms were fine. Small TV, but don't go to Mexico to watch TV! "Small, quaint, and charming."
The RIU Lupita is not for everyone. But if you want a smaller, affordable, or just romantic charm resort that doesn't have to be beach front, this is it. The beach is just a ten minute shuttle bus ride away and their are RUI sister resort privileges if you need to visit upscale to the larger, beach front resorts. This is not really a resort for children […] or families as there is little to do for them there other than the pool. The Lupita caters to Europeans and Canadians much more than the United States clientele. The resort doesn't even take U.S. Dollars for small room payments or fees and will only accept Euros, Pesos or a few other European currencies. The staff is superb! The resort is small and charming. If you just want a quiet vacation away from the hussle and bustle of the world, this could be it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
We stayed at the Riu Lupita from January 27 to January 31st. It was four women. We had 2 separate rooms, one on the 1st floor and one on the 3rd floor. *I would recommend the 1st floor because they aren't any elevators. They cleaned the rooms daily and re-stocked the mini bar every other day. Make sure you use the safe, my friend had her iPhone charger […] stolen. My purse and cash were in the room and not touched, but the charger stolen, very strange! There is one restaurant that serves Mexican food (that you need a reservation to) and of course the buffet. I thought the buffet food was good-same as any other all-inclusive resort. We took the free shuttle (comes every half an hour til 6:45pm) every day to the Riu Playa Car and would use their pool and beach. It was much livelier and you just can't beat staring at that blue ocean water! I went into this trip expecting to be waited on-but that's not the case. If you want a beach chair, you carry it yourself and if you want a drink, you hike it to the bar and get it yourself. It's not that big of a deal, but I am used to being pampered! We also took taxi's into town every day. They charge $7 each way. The town was awesome. Lots of restaurants, bars, nightclubs and stores. Very happening. Night life goes until 6 am! I would recommend this hotel as long as you know ahead of time what you're getting into. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"A review of the hotel AND hotels.com"
My review is of both the hotel as well as of hotels.com accuracy of info. First, let me set the picture: I was in Tulum, Mexico for a weeklong yoga and meditation retrea but had to evacuate the resort after 3 days due to a cat 2 hurricane that was heading directly to the area. It wasn't an option to get an earlier flight out of Mexico, so I quickly […] visited hotels.com looking for an option of where to stay knowing that I wasn't going to find the same peaceful environment of yoga and organic food that I was forced to evacuate from. So, I booked the remaining 4 ngihts at Riu Lupita in Playa del Carmen as it was the Riu resort furthest from the ocean (keeping in mind the hurricane approaching). One main reason I chose this hotel was because the hotels.com website showed the following room features: "Room details: 1 king bed, or 1 king bed and 1 bunk bed, or 2 double beds. Balcony or terrace. Satellite TV. Direct-dial phone. Wired (high-speed) Internet access - surcharge.", etc. In-room internet access was critical as I needed to conduct business every day for several hours in a private setting. Upon checking in, I was informed that NO rooms had internet access and my only internet accessible options were the restaurant and the lobby. Not appropriate when I needed to conduct business without people overseeing or overhearing. I inquired about relocating to another Riu resort (there are 6 on the property) but was informed by the manager they were all evacutating to Riu Lupita because of the hurricane so I had no choice but to keep my reservation or they would release my room to someone else. Fearful of having no place to stay, no rental car and the hurricane headed directly towards the coast of Cancun/Playa del Carmen, I agreed to the room. Upon being shown my room, it was dirty and I had to get relocated to another room. Now let me say that I have never been to an all-inclusive resort where there are 4 full size bottles of liquor mounted in the bathroom with taps on them Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Diamond in the ruff"
This was our second time. Quaint, quiet, laid back and romantic. If you want a nice rest in the sun with great service and value for the money..Lupita is it. Not on the beach so its not for everybody, but 2 pools including a quiet pool is great for those wanting a rest without a lot of fanfair. Shuttle bus to their own private beach club with restaurant […] every 30 minutes. Whereas the larger Rui resorts in the area are more pretentious and where both the clientele and staff are not as friendly likely due to the size...the Lupita is small, cozy more laid back. But if you really do like the larger RIU resorts with bigger pools, more options and right on the ocean..you can still stay at one, play at four. Your wrist band gets you in to the Rui Playacar, Tequila & Yucatan. For exercise, we would walk to them most days (30 - 40 minutes), stay for breakfast, rest at the beach or pool, have lunch, then return by the shuttle bus. You can get it all if you really want it! My girlfriend and I traveled with her 16-year old daughter and friend the last week in July. We wanted a place for the girls to roam yet with boundaries. Check-in was quick. The property is “quaint” and easy to navigate. An easy 3-minute walk through manicured grounds got us to everything we needed. We got rooms 2520 and 2521 which are on a loop furthest […] from the central services area. The rooms were generally OK with modest furnishings. The grounds were beautiful but the lack of rigorous building maintenance was distracting. Mattresses are firm but not uncomfortable. A/C wall unit not easy to dial in a comfortable setting. We choose constant full-blast cold over muggy. There were other minor issues but nothing that prevented us from adapting. The rooms met our needs even though just a bit of tweaking could make it so much better. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are strikingly similar to other Riu properties though less elaborate. Many superb items at each meal. It’s self-serve all the way even at the bar. A shuttle bus makes a round trip to the beach every half-hour. There are two legs to the 2-mile 15-minute run, with stops at Playa del Carmen and then at a walkway next to the Riu Palace Riviera Maya. The walkway leads to the Cozumel Beach Club. Great place for families. Quaint property with free-running animals, all-inclusive food and drinks, evening entertainment, lounge chairs plentiful both poolside and at the beach. Loved starting our holiday at Riu Lupita. All the staff were fab, the food was great and it was really clean and well looked after. Not sure it would have been my cup of tea for more than the three days we were there, but we were travelling round quite a bit and the hotel was obviously geared towards families. There was a great kids club and the show […] every night was entertaining - I've never seen staff who work so hard! Would definitely recommend to friends, especially those with children.
