Still small enough to explore on foot, Playa del Carmen has a relaxed, yet cosmopolitan feel, with a variety of hotels, shops, and restaurants ranging from causal to upscale. European-style sunbathing is common on beaches. Playa is a popular jumping-off point for day trips to Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Tulum, and other peninsula attractions, and a passenger ferry makes frequent runs to Cozumel.see all hotels in Playa del Carmen

"It was very nice."
We have a very good experince at Azteca we love the pool and beach front.Genuine Expedia guest review
Excellent resort with the beach steps away from the rooms. Good food, very clean rooms, amazing staff. Also, if you want to do tours the hotel has a perfect location to do it. We loved the beach with a white and soft sand, very clean and beautiful. Food quality is good, the buffet is plenty of good choices. "very fair hotel for $ & great activities committee"
We had a great time aside from 1 1/2 days of rain. Even then the activities group kept our spirits up with games, etc. They are a great bunch of people, and I think that is what I will miss the most. The hotel room was large enough for us three, (me, my wife, and son) but could have easily fit four comfortably. The beds were comfortable as well. We […] had plenty of hot water. For the cost, it was a very fair priced vacation. Would definitely do it again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice Hotel on a beautiful beach, food is good."
Stayed at the Azteca from Aug 5th-11th, 2013 with my husband and 2 kids. Hotel is very nice, staff very helpful. I was given a room towards the back away from the ocean but honestly it was fine, I was on the top floor, 3rd floor, but is was nice because we were away from the noise and honestly were able to rest at night, 5 minute walk to the beach. […] Beware this hotel has no elevator so make sure to book ground floor if you have problems with stairs and or ramps. We stood for 6 nights so we were entitled to 2 a la carte restuarants which the food was decent and plentiful. We ate at Portofino (had AC, over at the Mayan) and at Xul Ha (no AC, at the Azteca). The only downside to the hotel is the AC, my room was not cool enough. We called it in immediately when we noticed the room was not getting cooler they sent someone to check it out and he explained to us that the temperature would not get any cooler as it is controlled by the hotel. It probably didn't help that we were on the top floor with the sun beating all day on the roof. The Buffet food is fine, plenty of food all day, there was never a shortage of food, I must say, hands down to the Italian chef cooking the pasta for lunch and dinner...I'm from NY so I am use to good pasta, but the pasta in Mexico made by this Italian chef is comparable if not even better than what I'm use to back home...my family was hooked on the pasta. Mexican night too was very good, tacos and cochinita were amazing!! Overall good Hotel! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel at PlayaCar"
We enjoy the hotel. The room was clean, food was good, beach is marvelous. I didn't like the buffet restaurant "El Nopal". There was no A/C. It was hard to have lunch at 90 plus degrees.Genuine Expedia guest review
it was great. very relaxing, great experience and comfortGenuine Expedia guest review
We stayed in this hotel in august 2012 and at that time i give the hotel a 4 in my overall rating and i decide to come back with next year, and during this stay they told me you only can make 1 reservation in the restaurants during your WHOLE stay, that didn’t happen last year, the lady that was in charge of making the reservations told me "I’m been […] working at this hotel for more than 2 years and it's impossible you make a reservation everyday:" I’m not a liar I really was in all the restaurant last year. I had to go and talk with the manager and she was very nice and explain she was right but she was going to try to give me at least one more reservation, this is costumer service, the other lady was mean .... and this is the reason why I won’t come back to this hotel, beautiful beach, nice hotel for the price but for the same price you can get better. "Nice basic hotel close to plenty of space beach"
Good location for a nice hotel that delivers what promised for a reasonable price. Very good for families, with a quiet but still active environment. Food is good quality, not a huge variety still plenty of different choices. Night show is poor, as well as concierge staff friendliness.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful Beaches.... Not impressed w/ room"
The powder white beaches and blue green waters were gorgeous! We felt completely safe and could leave our belongings on our beach chairs w/o having to worry. Buffet was average but outside seating was limited and sitting indoors was like a sauna. So definitely take advantage of the included restaurant dinners which were refreshing... The Italian was […] our favorite. That being said, we were hugely disappointed with our room location (Rm 1145). After explaining to Edgar at check in, we had young kids who went to bed early and rose early, they proceeded to put us close to the nightclub next to the main hallway. This meant thumping music from 9-12, loud hallway chatter since there is no carpet anywhere, and early morning traffic. changing rooms was not an easy process! so we made due w/ earplugs, sleeping pills, utilizing the hurricane shutters.. And putting our cranky kids in kids club! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice affordable accommodations"
Hotel is clean and comfortable. The only thing really negative and it is not bad but the food is just ok. It was nothing spectacular, seems to lack a staff who knows about cuisine. Many things were mislabeled on the buffet. There were a lot of different activities to keep everyone amused.Genuine Expedia guest review
I am a fan of all inclusive hotels. This time we decided to spend more on tours and less at the hotel. We were pleasantly surprise with this hotel. Great location. Gorgeous beach. Impeccable room. Good food. Small hotel but cozier and closer to the beach than the huge hotels. Only one buffet restaurant with plenty of options and 3 a la carte. Good quality […] drinks. Recreation staff was really nice and the girls from the kids club were super sweet with the children. Close to 5th ave. Close to Xcaret. Only one pool. Espressos and cappuccinos in every bar! Viva is an Italian company so you will see a lot of Italians. Snack bar open 24/7. If you are on a budget, this definitively a fantastic option! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"A small resort!!"
The resort was clean and the staff very welcoming! The resort was very small and not much to do besides the pool. I traveled with two children and there weren't many activities for them. There is only one resteraunt that offers buffet services and you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same place if you don't have reservations for the other days. […] Very disappointing! It gets a bit boring after 2 days unless you go on excursions. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Okay, just okay"
We tried to like it, we really did. I hate being nickle and dimed. If you stay 8 nights like we did, you only get to eat at their a-la-carte restaurants 3 times. When we stayed at a Wyndham Sabor in Cozumel we ate a-la-carte every night we were there and the food was delicious. That's what we expected. We got tired of the snack bar and buffet after […] our 3rd time eating there. Internet in the room was $15 USD a day!!! On what planet is that a reasonable price? Sunscreen in the resort gift shop was $20 USD, so bring as much of your own as you can. The ATM only gives you USD, even though the resort gift shop, cabs, most places in Playa del Carmen only take pesos. So you get hit with an ATM fee, then walk a few feet to their on-site money exchange to get a below market rate peso exchange where they'll make a few more bucks from you. One of the big selling points for us was the 24 hour room service, which if they had it, they sure didnt want anyone to know about it. The first day we got there, there was a menu you could click boxes for a continental breakfast, things like yogurt, coffee, toast. If that's what they're advertising as 24 hour room service, they should be ashamed. All the bars, the snack bar, the theater and the buffet (get used to it, you'll be eating there a lot) are open air facilities. It was 90+°F with 85%+ humidity, so just going to get something to eat will have you sweating like crazy. There's only one pool and it was too hot to be refreshing. Almost everything about this resort is great! The cleaning staff is constantly working to keep the place looking its best. The wait/bus staff in the buffet is very attentive about clearing away dishes and asking if anything is needed. The kitchen staff keeps the food fresh and plentiful. The cooks are awesome -- delicious food. The on-site restaurants […] are wonderful. The entertainment/activities staff is the best -- extremely friendly and enthusiastic. The beach is beautiful. "Beach is the best"
This is our 2nd time to this area of Playa del Carmen. (We were a group of 2 couples, my husband and I and our daughter and her boyfriend.) We have stayed at comparable hotels each time. The location of this resort is really amazing. The stretch of beach is well kept and you can walk into town on the beach or on the street. There are very few beach […] vendors and the ones that are there do not hassle you if you say no. The rooms look like they have been updated recently, we stayed in 2109 and 2110. The air conditioning was very good. The food was average really. We ate at the Italian and Mayan restaurants, they were both good. The pool bar lunch and main buffet was the same everyday. Not enough regional choices for our liking. Having said this, if you haven't gone to many all inclusive resorts you most likely wouldn't be as critical as we were. The 2 main complaints we had was the front desk not helpful, not so friendly and willing to interact as the rest of the staff. They seemed confused and paid NO attention to any form of line or first come first serve. Also some had to put 100.00 deposit where others did not. No offer to help us to our rooms with luggage. The issues we had with the entertainment was poolside/bar the lack of music volume and the short hours of the music being played.... 9:30am to 5:30 at the latest? We like Mexico for the fun music throughout the day/evening. Strong drinks at pool bar and we loved Manual!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The Viva Wyndham Azteca was a great place to stay. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised to find at check-in we had been upgraded to a ocean view room. We had a king size bed and a view of the beach and pool. The locations was awesome. With in walking distance of downtown Playa del Carmen and the Viva Wyndham Mayan. Staying at the Azteca allowed us […] full use of the Mayan facilities. The food was good. If you enjoy buffet food. The restaurants on the two Wyndham sites are really good. I personally ate at the Bamboo, an asian venue. The selection offered was great and the was delicious. The staff were always kind and accommodating. We took a trip to Tulum, an Mayan city and Xel-Ha (Shell-ha). If you go to Tulum, take your bug spray or wear light long sleeves and pants. The mosquitos ate us alive! Xel-ha was a complete blast. The time flies. You can bundle the two trips for an all day excursion. Don't worry about food when you get to Xel-ha, it's all inclusive! We took the ferry over to Cozumel. Round trip it cost $26.00 USD. We rented a scooter and drove around the island. If you do decide to go to Cozumel, look for a place called Mirrado (I think that is how it was spelled), it was a cool spot. If you go remember to relax and have fun! "Great for the money!"
My husband and I came here for our five-year anniversary trip. We didn't want to spend a lot of money and got a great deal on this all-inclusive. We weren't looking to do many activities - we just wanted to eat, drink, and unwind! That's exactly what we did. Pros: Staff was great! Super friendly, enthusiastic, and wanted to make sure you had a good […] time. Food was good. Great to know we could visit the sister hotel (Maya) down the street if we wanted to and use their facilities. 20-minute walk to 5th Avenue (or a quick cab ride). Loved the VIVA dance at 10am and 3pm daily! There's also a cute shopping plaza on the way to the Maya that nobody told us about - we just ran into it. Everything seemed clean and although we saw a lot of workers doing maintenance around the property, we figured this was good that they were on top of keeping things in good shape. Cons: Stayed 6 days but was only allowed to make two reservations at the restaurants - wish we could have gotten more. Although the buffet food was definitely good, it got boring sometimes. Wish the buffet area was a cooler temperature - only had some fans going but it's hard for me to completely enjoy your meal when you're sweating. Overall, we would definitely go back. Worth it for the price....not the fanciest place but definitely served its purpose and we were pretty happy! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great value / beach access"
The hotel offers great value in general. The staff is friendly, facilities are in great conditions, and the room comfortable. If I had any complaints would be the food quality in the pool bar and buffet. I did not try the other restaurants, but only goes to show that I was fine with the other offerings. The buffet changes its plates around 30% per night, […] and the remain stays the same. The food was not amazing, but did satisfy me. I would return to the resort because the beach access, the property location (close to town) and general staff was great! Totally recommend the place. Expect a large amount of European tourists, which in my opinion is also a good change. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great for family, or couples"
My husband and I book this hotel based on location and price. We have stayed in Cancun in the past and wanted something less urban. We traveled with our three teenage girls 14, 15, 16 and booked two rooms for 6 nights. The rooms are a nice size and the housekeeping staff took great care of us. We took good care of them as well. As for the food, I never […] except much at and all inclusive so, i'm going to say that the food was better than I excepted for a buffet. I wish they offered sit down meal every night. The beach is excellent our girls enjoyed the beach games. Pool is nice. Drinks absolutely get the job done. They have a small fitness room that will work in a pinch. You can walk or jog to town and there is a fitness place on 5th ave. We plan to stay here again it's a great bang for the buck. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Decent stay, would recommend"
We stayed in Viva Windham Azteca for 87 nights in February 2013. Overall it was pleasant experience. Food was decent for all-inclusive, entertainment was OK, amenities were well maintained, stuff was friendly. No crowd, which was good. The only drawback I should mention, that when we were checking in , we were told that they don't have rooms available […] and we were offered different resort as an "upgrade". After half an hour talking with a management they "miraculously" found the room. I don't know why it happened, it never happened to us before. Other than that, everything was fine and we would recommend this hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"4-5 star for the budget conscience traveler"
Great smaller but cozier resort with very attentive staff! Had a great time chatting with the bartenders and activity staff. The food in the italian a la cart restaurant was AMAZING! The buffet style restaurant always served up tastey cuisine as well. "Great value. Fun times."
The AC kept us awake the first night thundering and banging. We asked for a new room the next morning but were told by the gal at the desk there were none available. Talked to a manager and he had the AC fixed. He knew what was wrong with it. It was some valve that had gone bad. The AC never did work that great after the fix either. We were able to […] cope with it. Room cooled off enough during the night. I don't like it when you have a problem with a room and they say there aren't any others available. They should be keeping rooms open in case there are problems. Besides the AC we had a wonderful time. The food was good. Plenty of activities and the walks on the beach were memorable. I have stayed in many hotels before and I have worked at a couple too, and I would […] recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a good clean place to stay. The grounds are wonderfully kept up and include a great ocean front and garden. I recommend trying the Italian Restaurant - the food is great and the waiters are extremely charming! The bar tenders are very welcoming and efficient! There is even a place to book excursions right at the hotel. We booked one for Chichen Itza and everything was as wonderful as they said it would be. "Can't Find the Complaints"
We booked our room at the Viva Wyndham Azteca on the recommendation of our realtor. They stay here often. We read some of the reviews and people were complaining about food quality and all kinds of things so here's our experience: The room was small but who cares? Are you really there for the room? It was clean and it had a bed, a shower, and a toilet. […] What else do you want? The housekeeping staff did a great job keeping it clean and nice. The food was buffet food. They're cooking for 340 rooms so don't expect Filet Mignon on the buffet. The theme for the buffet cycles based on the day but there were always hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza and a salad bar. The food we had was great and there was plenty of it. The reservation restaurants were amazingly good, but you have to know how they work. The first day you get there, make your reservations and you will only get a few based on how many days you stay. We stayed for 6 days and got 2 reservations. They don't cost extra so that's why they limit you (we had Filet Mignon at the Italian restaurant). The staff was friendly and did everything they could to make our stay great. Their "animators" (the ones in charge of activities and such) even ate their meals with the guests if you wanted them too and every night they put on a show with dancing in their theatre. Honestly, for the price we couldn't be happier and you will be too if you don't go there expecting the Ritz Carlton for the price they charge. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

This was our first trip to Playa Del Carmen and we stayed at the Wyndham Azteca. The hotel was absolutely beautiful and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The food was really good and the hotel restaurants were amazing. The beach was absolutely gorgeous!!! The only negatives I would have to say is that the pillows in the room are a little […] hard and the bed is extremely firm. So next time I will bring my own pillow from home - LOL. Also a couple of tips: When you go to the hotel gift shop make sure you have clean bills. They will not accept money that is torn or ripped or written on. And make sure you get to the pool early and get chairs because they go really fast. I would also recommend the Jungle Mayan Tour with Alltournative!! It was the best time and the best excursion!! We did ziplining, rapelling and snorkled in the Cenotes. They also provided us with an official homemade Mayan lunch. DELICIOUS!!! We had a blast and it was amazing!!!! We went shopping into town (The Fifth Avenue) and ate at La Parrilla Restuarant. I would recommend it if you want some great mexican food. I loved the Azteca Tacos!! They were delicious.
