Got a good deal on a a room nearly last minute. Chose to take advantage of the hotel Valet parking at $36 a night. arrived and had to call the hotel to figure out the Valet. No one was there. Tried to find street parking. Fail. Waited out front. Called again, finally got through. Hotel staff were unable to provide any helpful information about the […] surrounding area. We made do, but it's nice to bounce some ideas off of the front desk when looking for a quick bite, or place for a drink or a tour recommendation. Our room was pretty small. Not the biggest deal, as we were out and about, but smaller than expected. The bed was not very comfortable either. When we left, we forgot to call ahead for the Valet. They estimated 20 minutes. More likely 40 minutes. While we were waiting, we got to hear the doorman talking on the house phone, complaining about the job and how he could obviously do better. No. We will not be staying again. Nice and quaint. Room was very small but was fine to just sleep over night in.Genuine Expedia guest review
"old, not charming"
i like hotels with character, but this was not that. rooms are tiny; can't even fit a chair. Old carpet, old mattress, scraped and discolored walls, no AC... Do not trust the pictures - they are very deceiving.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cute, but not my favorite."
The receptionists were terrible. Both of the two people that worked the desk were unwelcoming. I felt as if I was and an inconvenience to them. The location was okay a bit of a walk (20) mins to get to Market St. but there were other small places to eat that were closer. The hotel was cute and had class probably back in the day, but could use some touch-up […] here and there. The room was SUPER TINY!! I almost asked to be switched but we were only staying one night so I said it's alright. Would not stay there again unless they got a new staff. I had better customer service at a Coldstone ice cream parlor than at this place. Oh! CHECK-INS AT 3:00PM NO EARLY CHECK-INS we got there at 1 and had to go kill time. This is one of my "go to" hotels when I stay in San Francisco (on a tight budget). Each of the rooms is unique with a Victorian theme. Some of the rooms are pleasant and some have issues. (Room 200 is a converted closet in which I could hear, without any difficulty, the guy next door snoring. Another room with two canopy beds had a smell that lingered […] with all my belongings after I checked out.). I stay here nonetheless, because it is quaint and there is usually availability at a reasonable price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Wild variation in rooms"
Prepaid three nights on Expedia and was put into a decent room resembling the picture advertising the hotel - French ornate. For some reason I was checked out after night two and someone else was put into my room. I had no luggage since I was only using it to sleep and the cleaner apparently said I was a no show. They put me into another room which […] was extremely small with filthy carpet and no decor at all, not even a closet or wardrobe, just dirty white walls. I slept fully clothed that night. Obviously it was cheap but I was offered no rebate for their mistake. Weird hotel behavior and would not risk getting a room like that again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Boutique Near Everything"
The valet service leaves much to be desired. I drove an SUV and was informed that there exhorbinate charge would be 25% higher. In the meantime, no one meets you at the car to load luggage or take keys, or even help park. Some of the clerks were more helpful than others, some very good. The last one was full of info-wish he had been there the first […] day. No a.c. in the room, not a real surprise, but my wife likes it to be sub-zero, which doesn't happen. But it was cold outside, so most people would be happy. We did not try the wine that was free in the lobby during happy hour, but the lobby was inviting and it is a real nice touch. If they had had a real valet, I would not have had such a poor initial impression, and the score would have been higher. I would stay again and recommend it to others. "Fantastic Staff, Nice Rooms, Convenient Location"
The rooms were wonderful, especially considering the cost. The walls on my second night were a bit thin, but not a major issue. All the staff I interacted with at the hotel were absolutely fantastic...attentive, kind and flexible. A+ Location is incredibly convenient and central to a lot of key neighborhoods in the city. Though, if you head south from […] the hotel a few blocks, it does get a little bit sketchy at night. Nothing too bad, but just to be aware for families or women traveling alone. Its an old building but Very comfortable and clean .Genuine Expedia guest review
"Lots of character but watch for hidden costs"
The hotel's historic decor was appealing, but our first room on the top floor was extremely small, very hot at night (in March) even with the windows open, and the bathroom was extremely dark due to having only one antique ceiling light. I asked to switch and the second room was a tremendous improvement - much more spacious and well lit, with better […] climate control. The rooms were very clean, although vintage. Front desk service varies depending on who is working it. Watch out for their hidden parking fees. We used a garage around the corner and saved a lot of money. The "continental" breakfast was very disappointing, offering only two choices of dried cereal, toast, and store bought danish. Their antique elevator has a sliding grate, which was cool. May be okay for a couple's romantic weekend getaway, but not ideal for a family vacation. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"San Francisco spring break 2014"
Nice hotel. Very well located (walking distance from the trolley). Staff is a plus - always ready to help. Nice restaurant with excellent Italian food. Far from bad neighborhoods although you can see some homeless in the adjacent streets (as in many other parts of the city). I will definitively would go back again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great central location"
The stay was okay, the staff was very helpful when purchasing tour tickets etc. my biggest complaint would be the continential breakfast, not many options and no protein. The hotel was in a good location, within walking distance to many places. The building was beautiful, decor was nice and wine and cheese from 5:30 to 7 pm was nice as well.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Loved the Hotel. Great rooms! Extremely comfortable bed! I slept like a log. Historically beautiful, great location, wonderful Italian restaurant right next door, and the free wine and cheese in the lobby during evening hours was a wonderful touch. I would definitely stay again.Genuine Expedia guest review
It's an amazing hotel with lots of strange things, like a manual door to the elevator and my room was on the roof across a rooftop garden. The breakfast was pitiful for such a nice place, but everything else was amazing so I didn't care. It was a great old building with a fun vibe to it. Loved the luxurious room, which had a hot tub, a chandelier, and […] real art in the bedroom and a stained glass window in the bathroom along with a spacious (and upgraded from the original) shower. There was a view of some of the city from the top floor room, which was really cool, though the view didn't include any of the famous sites in SF which some people might be disappointed by, but I think that it was a cool view. The hotel is located on Nob Hill (hence the name) and visitors should note that it's on a hill, which means a steep walk to sites around the city and a wrong turn will take you into the Tenderloin, which is not someplace tourists would want to go. "Well worth it on a good deal"
Keeping in mind that just about all of San Francisco's neighborhoods are enjoyable for spending time in and nothing is too far away, this hotel can be considered to be in a nice location. It's not a particularly vibrant area for tourists nor close to any specifically popular attractions. The interior is quite nice and pretty ornate, but there are little […] blemishes here and there that might bother some. With a really good deal on price, like among San Francisco's other lower range hotels, this place is excellent--they offer a lot of amenities in a nice enough area and it is very pleasant and comfortable; I loved it way more than any cheap place. But I was shocked when I saw rates posted at more than twice what I paid. I loved the place but I would have been very disappointed if I had paid that much more. "Nice Hotel close to Union Square."
Had a nice experience in this Hotel. Checked-in mid evening, the receptionist was Nice, friendly, and was helpful with the questions asked. This hotel has a old 1920s-ish feel to it. Was nice, something new I haven't experienced before. A nice little amenity in the hotel was they offer complimentary wine in at their lobby. The room was an experience, […] for sure, there were some old portraits on the walls. A bit freaky when you see them because normally the first thing you think about is all the horror movies where the person in the portrait is looking at you, but I digress. Other than that, the room was comfy. Our bathroom was surprisingly really nice. One thing though about our room... is that it was pretty dark. Even in the morning seem a bit dark. But no biggie. "Don't leave anything behind..."
The staff seemed a little under qualified in every position. I called down to the front desk 5 times before i got someone to answer. One of the bellman was sleeping on the couch on the 2 floor for hours on Friday night. I thought that was odd. When retrieving my car from valet one evening it took over 30 minutes. Not cool. After I checked out later […] in the day I noticed that I left my toiletries and my watch. I called beck to the hotel to retrieve it and they can't seem to find it???? Very un-cool! Good hotel for that price. Rooms are small and elevator needs a replacement. Good overallGenuine Expedia guest review
"Convenient location, get rid of the carpet..."
Let me start off by saying that the location is great, but this is what is referred to as Lower Nob Hill aka very close to the Tenderloin---which is not the best neighborhood. The staff was very helpful and professional. The hotel lobby and the antique elevator was charming. The room, this is where I had issues, the carpet was absolutely disgusting, […] stained, smelly, and in desparate need of being removed and replaced with hard wood. The bed was clean, I just wouldn't walk on bare feet on the carpet. The bathroom was remodeled and clean. Also my room was facing the street, which has a lot of noise, and I had to keep the window open as to air out the smelly carpet. The hotel has so much potential, just needs some maintenance. "Looks interesting, but not very comfortable"
This hotel looks quite interesting. It's kind-of victorian style (old big furniture, statues and so on). However, it wasn't very comfortable. The room was barely big enough for a queen bad, there was no A/C (which was a problem after a hot day). Since, there was no A/C, I had to keep my window open and it was quite loud.Genuine Expedia guest review
I spent two nights here in early January. I read a lot of reviews about how the rooms are too small. Since I was traveling alone, I didn't mind a small room so I knew what to expect. However, I must have been lucky because they gave me a spacious room with two double beds all to myself. It was definitely a super deal for me. I've never stayed in a […] boutique hotel before, so it was a unique experience for me. Loved the old time feel and Victorian style decor...although I have to say I was a little creeped out by the real life paintings on the wall mixed in with the dim lights in the room. Room was clean, including bathrooms. The bathroom was actually quite modern compared to the rest of the room. Breakfast was average; the usual bread, cereal, and fruits, but would have liked to see more hot foods. They do have complimentary wine in the afternoon. The staff were generally very helpful in answering my questions. Location is great; there is a grocery store nearby and it's only a few blocks walk to Union Square and the cable cars. Very small room could not walk around bed had to shuffle sideways around pipes sticking out of base floor area that had a gray sponge pipe wrap on them, room also had a bad odor, dirty base boards, very old decor in need of updating, very small tv very few channels offered.Genuine Expedia guest review
My husband and I had a wonderful time! The hotel was old, but remodeled. They upgraded our room for us and we enjoyed the rooftop room with a courtyard. We especially loved the beautiful marble bathroom! It was just lovely! I wanted a room that had old fashioned charm and this room did! The elevator was original from 1906? and it worked just fine. "not a good hotel"
The hotels location is ok but besides that there are not much else to praise. The decor is misplaced all over the room just to fill gaps, like a huge cabinet that actually closed of a window and etc. view - none, actually it was worse than no view because the windows were directed into other peoples rooms! we had to keep them closed unless you would […] want to see other people... the smell in the room was terrible, high concentrated air purifier smell, the toilet/restroom had a completely different awful smell as well. internet connection - literaly non existant, the staff kept saying that "sometimes it work sometimes it dont"... IT DIDNT WORK breakfast - located downstairs in a 5 table mini restaurant, didnt serve any food besdies a couple of bunns and few slices of bread with an ptional margarine or jam. there was actually not enough room to sit in it and all tables were dirty. The room was more than a little small, it was literally a box. The sink wasn't even in the bathroom. We hit our head on the SMALL mounted tv several times. Hardly walking room within the room. "Book Somewhere else"
I read the reviews and thought this place would be quaint and cute. I thought maybe the reviews were a bit over the top. I was wrong. When we first arrived through the neighborhood we were horrified. It was obviously not a great part of town, it was a filthy area, and not an area we would want to walk around in at night. The hotel is Ok. The lobby is […] cute. The elevator is old and I opted to take the stairs after the first ride. The day staff is amazing. Very nice guys working the front desk and they were very helpful. The night shift..meh. Our room was upgraded and thank god for that because even with the upgrade, it was not worth the money for the room. Pay a few extra dollars and stay somewhere else. I thought it was be vintage and romantic. It was run down and moldy. (The bathroom had mold every where.) We weren't in the room except to sleep so we just stayed there. The breakfast was nothing much and not worth them really providing. Great Day Staff, awful hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Convenient location but keep your expectations low"
It's a small boutique hotel, not bad at all but they need to clean the carpets and improve the quality of the breakfast. I complained about a few light bulbs being fused and the front desk person made a note of it but no one came to fix it. My room was facing the front street and there was a lot of noise coming. I couldn't sleep all night.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Very quaint hotel."
I loved my stay and just adored Patrick, the Bellman. He gave a warm welcome and early check-in was available. The lobby is quite nice, the check-in was fast and breakfast is complimentary. Did not have it so not sure what all was offered for that. It is so close to everything. It was only a few blocks to union Square. It is a bit hilly around the hotel […] but that is San Francisco. The room is quite small for a just a double bed. It could fit two but it is pretty snug. If you are single it would a suitable fit. The phone in the room did not have good volume. The lever was on maximum and each call to the front desk was very faint. Luckily the rooms are quiet. I would definitely stay again. The rooms facing the courtyard was perfect for some natural sunlight to enter the room. It is very lovely and quaint for hotel. The stay was very enjoyable overall. The location of the hotel was actually pretty convenient since it was two blocks away from one of the cable cars and near Chinatown. WE took a short walk around the block and found some cool cafés, sushi places, and other markets. The room itself was very outdated. Don't be fooled by the modern design of the lobby, the room itself has a confusing Victorian/art […] deco feel to it (not a compliment). CONS: burn stain on the carpet, found old candy underneath the bed, & $34 for valet parking (ridiculous!). The girl who checked us in was super nice but the young guy who we checked out with was a little rude and in a rush to get us out of there.
