By far the best hotel we stayed in during our trip to the UK. As usual, we found it smaller than similarly-priced botels in the US, but the room was clean and comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful.

The Durham Marriott had all the appeal and charm of a small, British inn with all the modern conveniences and luxurious touches of a "big city" hotel. Smashing hotel. Looks like its made up of several buildings, some over look the river, some the city. I had a castle view room. The hotel is perfectly located for all the attractions within the city of Durham. The hotel has been in existence many years and the old part of the hotel certainly shows it, with a labyrinth of narrow hallways with creaking sloping floors. The room we had was well furnished but small and a bit cramped. There were windows but no view whatsoever. The […] bathroom was excellent. There was a fridge in the room but it did not function, and the attention to details on servicing the room was not quite up to scratch.(missing tissues, missing coffee etc). Marked down because: Parking overnight cost £5, Wifi costs £15/day, Shower gel is no longer provided (although clean hair is a must and shampoo is) in amenities, the in-room tea is pitiful and the cookie is a small biscuit. Room should have been cleaned but was not at expected level. The saving grace was breakfast and the location.

Our room faced the road and we could not hear any traffic noise, however the heating system kept me awake all night as it was extremely noisy. Not all the lights worked. My son had a large room which faced the river and was very spacious the view was lovely. However when he wanted a bath the taps would not turn on. He should be removed from front line customer service and be sent for retraining. He should also learn from he collegues - they more than compensated for him.

Mulled wine and mince pies on arrival was a nice Christmas touch. Unfortunately room was not available until 45 mins after it should have been, as it was still being cleaned. However this was later compensated for by allowing us to remain in the room for two hours after the normal check-out time as it was not required for a booking. We booked a Water […] View room which was good but a relatively long and complicated route within the hotel to get to it on the first floor, involving going up to second floor level, along corridors, over a bridge and down to the first floor. This hotel cost the same as many other city 4*, however our stay was exceptional. Room was plush, large, clean and very comfortable. Found staff very friendly and lovely atmosphere. Breakfast was also exceptional with the lovely addition of cooking eggs to order to suit your taste. We didn't eat dinner within the hotel, sampling the many local restaurants […] instead-which were also great value for money. The added bonus was the truth that this really is IN the city and able to walk everywhere, plus the added bonus of leaving the car safe for £5/day.Bargain! A very basic hotel. Quite surprising for Marriott standards. The room toiletries are not replaced even when it is empty. There is no toothbrush or toothpaste. Neither is there any slippers. Room has a smokey smell even it is a non smoking room. Will not stay there again.

Treated us very well, wine on arrival was welcome after train journey. Riverside room was lovely and the breakfast very generous. They coped well with a full house - 2 wedding parties while we were there. Everyone very friendly and professional. My choice for Durham visits!

I booked this hotel due to its proximity to Durham Cathedral as well as the leisure facilities. Upon check in we were told that the pool and jacuzzi were closed and have been for some time. They expected it to be closed for a good few days and it should have been written on the websites to advise people before booking. We were not advised before booking! […] We wanted to enjoy the pool etc, so asked if we could transfer our booking to another Marriott. The hotel staff were great and sorted this out for us and we were transferred to the Gatehead hotel. We did see our room which was clean and had a great view of the Cathedral - even though the room was a little smaller than expected for the amount we paid. On a normal day when everything is open, this would be a great hotel to stay at. Please also note that parking is 5 pounds per overnight stay. We cannot fault the staff at the hotel, but Marriott should ensure that guests are aware at present that the pool and jacuzzi are closed. Read more

This hotel has been there for ever.... and it's beginning to show. Excellent location and typically warm Northern reception from the staff but the hotel is in need of a thorough refurb. The room was small but comfortable. main issue was the noisy airconditioning which even when switched off, was still very noisy. Staff in the bar lounge area were too few in number to provide proper service - once I alerted them to my presence they were courteous an attentive, but I shouldn't have to sit there in a pretty empty bar for 15 minutes waiting to be noticed. The coffee served in the bar is poor, too! Otherwise, a very welcoming hotel and an enjoyable stay.

Disappointing considering the price and 4* status (most likely refers to facilities rather than quality of hotel). Warning! King size bed is not guaranteed on booking - we were given a twin bedroom on arrival which was switched to a king size bedroom when I complained (I was there celebrating 10th year anniversary where I met my partner). Bathroom dated and rough around the edges - wall tiles loose, toilet flush was dodgy and water pressure from shower very poor BUT still very clean though and not dreadful, but expected better for 4*. No fridges in the rooms, most ice machines out of order (though room service can send you ice) so not much good for my bottle of champagne. Also, the pay TV & sky TV wasn't working (not the reason for staying in the hotel but no good if you want to stay up late watching a film after an evening out).
