The Commodore Hotel - Cape Town

Very comfortable hotel. The staff are very friendly and willing to help. The Travel Desk is outstanding. Breakfast buffets is very large and varied. The location is great. Rooms near the courtyard can be bit loud if you're on a lower floor.

The Commodore is in a great location. Only minutes from the V & A, aquarium, craft markets. I had a lovely afternoon at the spa as well. The staff were very helpful in arranging transport and reservations.

This hotel is at a great location and has a fairly good restaurant. The strengths include free internet, large safe in the room, refrigerators in rooms, great breakfast buffet, good cold beer at the lounge, and concierge staff that are ready to call cabs and arrange trips. I cannot think of any weaknesses other than (possibly) the fact that, for security […] reasons, in order to close the door from outside (as in going out), one has to shut it closed, which can be noisy in the middle of the night (that did not bother us, but I do not know of other guests). For some travelers it might also be of some interest that our room did not have a flat-screen TV (perhaps there are some available in other rooms). Cape Town has so much to offer, there is so much to do outside, that we did not watch any TV during the entire 9-day stay, so this was not a problem for us. The reliability and availability of the internet more than made up for the TV being a little dated. Commodore hotel advertisement present a view that I did not really have although I tried two different room locations. The view may be better on the top two floors but believe it or not those floors are for people who smoke. It is a 6 story hotel and we stayed on the 4th floor. We had a balcony which was small and without furniture. We saw a little […] of the waterfront but mostly the top of another building from our room. The area we were in was the waterfront. That I believe is the main draw of the hotel. It is a nice shopping and eating area and is safe to be in any time of day or night. Otherwise there was nothing special about the hotel. By American standards breakfast was great. By African hotel standards however it was mediocre. Only on the 3rd day did I realize that one could ask for items such as large glasses or waffles that were not laid out in the buffet style eating area. It is a decent hotel in a nice location and when on sale it might be less expensive than other hotels in the vicinity. I had a better time in a mere 3 star hotel "the Ritz" in the past in terms of food and service. However the furnishings at the Commodore are superior and the location is much nicer. It is also closer to downtown Cape Town where I did a lot of sight seeing. I don't think I will stay there when I return for the next jazz festival but there is nothing wrong with this hotel. They shoud designate floors as nonsmoking or smoking vs every other room or so. Beds could be softer and they could change sheets more often. After 7 nights, we still had the same sheets. Should include internet with rate. Otherwise we really liked the hotel and would stay again.

We were very pleased with our 5 nights at the Commodore. It is a safe 1-2 block walk to the V&A Waterfront with rates significantly less than the 5 star hotels directly on the Waterfront. Room was large, well maintained and we had views of Signal Hill and Table Mountain. Staff was extremely helpful and eager to please. Generous breakfast buffet.

Located in a great location within walking distance to the waterfront, green point, and sea point (a bit further but a nice walk). The rooms are clean and the staff is extremely helpful. Breakfast was included with our rate and it is truly a nice buffet breakfast. Will stay there next time I visit Cape Town!

Hotel is a bit tired and could do with upgrade. AC unit very noisy in room as its the old style unit. Staff were nice but cleaning of room wasn't consistent. Great location as its only a 2 minute walk to the waterfront.

Great location - At the airport get the MyCiti bus to CityExchange, change & take MyCiti bus to Granger Bay stop. Hotel is only 5 minutes walk away. The V&A Waterfront is just across from the hotel - again about 5 minutes & the first building you encounter is the Information centre, so perfect for advice. The Red & Blue city tour (recommended) starts […] a further 8 minutes or less from there. Hotel staff are very polite and friendly, though at breakfast it can be difficult at times to get them to pour coffee or tea, as they're so busy, but that's not a real criticism! Free wifi in both bedrooms and all public areas and reasonably good, too. As a gay male couple in our early 50s, we were made very welcome, without any fuss. Refreshing change compared to some countries. Concierge and hotel staff are available 24 hours a day in the lobby if there are any problems and can order taxis for you, etc. Rooms were well presented, clean and comfy, with fresh towels etc if required. My only criticism of the widescreen TV in the bedroom would be that it was analogue only and limited to the number of channels that could be received - we stuck to Sky News, as the only other "interesting" channel was CNN. No BBC News 24 for example, or a satellite choice of UK channels, as you can expect in Europe, but then again this is South Africa. First room we were shown was small, no balcony (as our reservation called for) and no view. Talked to reception - very helpful - and we were given a lovely room with balcony and fantastic view of Table Mountain. There were a few minor issues such as the door to our balcony was really hard to open and then didn't close well and our bags were not moved […] from the old room even when we called down to the desk to remind them. Also, don't eat at the hotel. The food was not very good and there are fantastic restaurants on the waterfront. We chose this hotel, as it was near to the Waterfront, where we were picking up the RMS St Helena - as the shipping line booked us into this hotel, we booked additional nights to see more of the Cape. I think this led to confusion, as the room was not cleaned and replenished between our personal booking and the final night - took a number of requests […] to get towels, tea bags etc - but at least four different people came up and brought one thing or another! It felt like a typical business peoples hotel, so was also a little impersonal - but individual staff went out of their way to be helpful and were happy to share their knowledge of the locality with us and recommend local establishments. this was a combined business/pleasure trip & we have stayed there a few times. It is a convenient position for our needs & generally ok but probably not up to 4 star standards. Staff-concierge very good, receptionists varied from very helpful to being offhand & rude to customers/housekeeping good on my floor but not on my daughter's but worst are the […] waiting staff who are more interesred in chatting to each other (if around) than checking if customers needed anything & very slow especially in bar/lounge area - & to say it's "Africa time" is not helpful especially given the number of business people they accomodate. The only reason that I did not rate cleanliness of the room with the maximum is that I felt the shower grouting could have used a little bleach, although it was clean.
