After booking this hotel, I looked at reviews on several websites and discovered that the hotel has a reputation for being dirty. This was absolutely true during my stay. The carpet in the hallways was stained and smelled, one of the two elevators is broken and has been for some time, and in my room, there were a number of issues. Both the chair and […] the throw on the bed had stains, there were numerous hairs on the comforter, and the bathroom had a sagging ceiling, chips out of the door, stains in the tile, and hair stuck to the walls. Throughout the room there were scrapes and scuffs on the walls. The heater in the room was incredibly loud and woke us up every time it turned on (every 30 minutes or so). Also, the hallway that leads from the garage into the main hotel was dirty and did not inspire confidence or a sense of welcome. Overall, it felt like an environment in which hotel staff just didn't care about keeping a clean, professional environment. The staff that I spoke to on check-in and check-out were polite and friendly, and the provided breakfast was perfectly adequate. While checking in was pleasant and the room itself seemed up to date, there was a horrific smell in the room. It smelled like sewage. I called the front desk and promptly someone was sent. "No temp control, no space, and stinks"
Whenever I have a bad experience at a hotel, it makes me rethink using that chain ever again; this is one of those situations. When we arrived, we were thrown with the decor (bright orange walls one example) & tiny room, but thought we could make it work. If those were the only problems, sure. The hotel is fairly old, but we didn't expect to be unable […] to change the room temperature. The entire hotel temp is controlled by one unit & we were on the third floor. It was 20 degrees outside, 85 in our room. We turned on the air conditioning, nothing came out except heat. We called downstairs & said the air wasn't working. They told us there was no air conditioning, turn it off and wait. The hallway was burning up (since heat rises & we were on the third floor, we were baking) so we couldn't open the door to cool it off. We had to open the drapes so cool air from the windows could cool off the room..hours later. They did at least give us a fan. The bathroom had a mildew smell, no vanity to speak of & the shower was extremely cramped. Wi-fi was non-existent. The bed creaked. My wife & I couldn't walk about the room at the same time it was so cramped. People stomping in the halls, laughing & partying at 3 AM. Worst hotel stay I've ever had. I hate giving a review this bad, but the only good thing to say about it is the downtown location. Within walking area of some good restaurants. If you're looking for tremendous luxury, you're probably not reading reviews of a Comfort Inn. There was no soap in our bathroom, but we had brought our own so we didn't mind. The shower in our bathroom was very small (narrow); I could see an overweight guest getting stuck in there! Parking could be a problem here; we got back to the hotel just before 2 a.m. on a Saturday night and got the very last parking space available in either the outdoor lot or tight parking garage (and getting into that last spot in the garage was quite an adventure). The location of this hotel is terrific. Just a couple of blocks from Forest Park and around the corner from the West End trendy shops and restuarants. The hotel has been remodelled as far as decor and includes "hardwood looking" floors in the guest rooms (brilliant idea, much easier to keep clean!). The beds are comfy. Someone, however, was NOT thinking […] when they chose flat paint on the guest room walls including the bathroom walls. I assume since flat paint is more difficult to clean marks off of, they chose to touch up the paint in scuffed areas. Regrettably the paint didn't match and therefore left obvious patches everywhere which made the room look shabby. That is a shame since the room was actually well decorated. The most frustrating thing we encountered was the thermostat. The room was set at 83 degrees when we arrived! It was obviously hot in the room. Before we left for dinner we set the thermostat to 70, turned it to COOL and set the fan on automatic. When we returned 3 hours later, it was STILL 83 degrees and the vent was blowing warm air. I called the front desk and was told that the entire hotel was set to "heat" since it was late October and even if we set our room thermostat to cool, it would still only push warm air. Checked in, walked to my room & couldn’t get in. Back downstairs to have keys reprogrammed. Tried it a second time, to no avail. During the back and forth, I could help notice the huge stains in the hallway carpeting. Looked like massive oil spills everywhere. Finally the clerk assigned me a different room, tried that room and by the sound of the […] load scream, it was already occupied by a terrified woman with a great set of lungs… Trekked once again downstairs with all my belongings and two daughters. Clerk (only one on duty was a bit busy this time. On the phone and from all the apologizing, I concluded he was on the phone with what seemed to be the horrified woman I just spooked. Finally, this time the clerk got it right… a room I can actually enter, that’s unoccupied. First thing we noticed was the foul odor in the room, luckily I always travel with scented candles… We were out all day and when we returned after dinner, the room hadn’t been touched by housekeeping. We were assigned another room. Same scenario the very next day…back mid-day and no housekeeping. Called front desk, who was assured by the supervisor that our room would be next on list to be cleaned…HA! Time for dinner and no housekeeping visit, so prior to stepping out I reminded the front desk and was assured it would be taken care of…HA!!! The best part of this hotel is location and price. The Central West End boasts plenty of eateries, shops, and attractions that St. Louis is known for and the Comfort Inn is right in the mix of it all. Many attractions are within walking distance, and the rest (downtown, Tower Grove park, etcetera) require only a small cab fare. The downside is that the number of workers are small and the maintenance is lackluster. The amenities of a once posh independent boutique hotel are evident but upkeep is a problem as there are scuff marks, toilet paper holders missing, and scratches/stains on the carpets and halls leading to the rooms. The rooms are also on the small side, but certainly adequate/comfortable when compared to other hotel rooms in different cities. Some bathrooms only have a shower stall and that can be quite limiting if you have special needs, so that is something one should be aware of.
