This hotel has all the potential but not quite a 5 star hotel. Breakfast had to many fried foods and not much fresh produce or breads. Dinners at the Grill were excellant, but the Boathouse had poor service and food. Views were great. Rooms were clean but noisey.

We liked the hotel, but thought that it was overpriced for what we got. Great location and landscapes, quiet and good service did enhance our experience. The room itself had inadequate lighting. An example: on one side of the bed, the bedside lamp was hidden behind a panel and gave absolutely no light in bed. Following a night at the Gretna Hall Hotel we spent a night at Cameron House to both celebrate our anniversary and my uncles 70th birthday. The two hotels could not be more different, but as far as staff effort and attention go, Gretna Hall won hands down. A brief synopsis; we could not get a dinner reservation anywhere but the claret jug: £50 overcharge, […] no vegetable soup/ soup arrived and was vegetable, no steak, no venison sausage, 'haddie' x4 arrived in uncooked batter, nobody asked how the meal was.... The boat house; No transport available for the 70 year olds in the snow, Overcharged at the bar (this is a theme) bucket of prawns arrived sans cutlery plates or condiments. Nicola at restaurant reception was stand out, she organised my god daughter chips (£3.50!!!) and was very pleasant. Great Scots Bar, overcharged at the bar by £10! I don't want to speculate, but who wouldn't? Pool area; lovely, staff overall helpful and great facilities. The rooms were lovely, we never ordered newspapers but Anna's did not arrive and the receptionist glibly stated that guests probably took them!! 2nd time we've stayed here and we had a lovely relaxing time. The room was comfortable with a lovely view of the loch. We had dinner in the grill which was absolutely wonderful. My partner booked this as a surprise treat for my birthday - wonderful location, excellent customer service, food amazing, room luxurious and comfortable. The addition of a sea-plane on the loch outside was a lovely touch for those wishing to see the beautiful scenery from the air.

having stayed at this hotel before we felt the standards had fallen somewhat initially our room was not ready on arrival, although we were give a drink to 'compensate' ,the rooms are looking a little shabby with mould round some of the bathroom fittings, eating at the hotel is quite expensive for what I would regard as pub food (£90 for 2 courses, pasta/pizza […] and wine),on leaving the hotel we were advised that £75 had been put on our credit card against our room, this was completely false as no charges had been used by ourselves, after explaining this to the receptionist he remove the £75 from our card with little or no explanation, BE ADVISED CHECK YOU'RE BILL ON LEAVING!!!!!!!!!!! This was our 2nd visit to Cameron House and still loved it. Its a gorgeous hotel in a stunning location. We were very kindly upgraded to a Lake View room on check in and on looking out the window in the morning we had stunning views over the Loch and grounds. The breakfast is so good and tasty - sound variety of options and the hot food is nice and […] warm without being greasy or overcooked! The rooms are lovely and comfortable, quite dark in decor, but it adds to the cosy feeling :-) Beds are sooo comfortable, had a great nights sleep and then had a lovely shower in the morning in the very chic bathroom. We managed to get a good deal at the Carrick Spa and also had dinner at Martin Wisharts and would also highly recommend this for a special evening and fantastic meal - all in all, had a fantastic break and will definitely be back. We would not stay again. The Cameron House is a very large hotel with an impersonal, corporate feel. We had been travelling around Scotland staying mostly in smaller hotels most of which were three star. We thought we'd treat ourselves to the five star Cameron House at the end of our journey. But, we enjoyed it the least. The room had the kind of layout […] that you'll find in millions of corporate hotels the world over. All the decoration was very dark and despite the lovely appearance of the outside of the main building we did not find one period feature anywhere in the hotel. Walking from our room to the bar or the dining room felt like going on a hike because the building was so huge. The bar was massive and impersonal as was the dining room. This was the only five star hotel we stayed in on our trip and also the only hotel that did not serve a freshly cooked breakfast -- it was a serve-yourself buffet. My advice is: treat yourself to one of the fabulous smaller, three star hotels in Scotland. They cost a lot less and you get a much better product. Read more

From start to finish we cannot find negative things to say when it comes to this hotel. My wife found the ambiance within the hotel a bit dark but ones your eyes acclimatise it felt normal. As soon as we got to our room we settled in no time, after about half an hour we received a courteous call from reception asking if all was well and to our satisfaction. […] A few minor points were mentioned and rectified instantly. Breakfast time was what we looked forward to each morning as it was a festival of food. They did not miss anything, whatever your pallet requires it was there. It's the best buffet breakfast we have had anywhere. When it comes to evening meals we only eat in the hotel on the last night in the Boat House. This was very pleasant. We found eating in the hotel a bit on the expensive side hence the reason we only eat on the last night. The quality of the food was good and we noticed the personal touches too made it different from other restaurants. After our meal we noticed it was dry outside but there was a chap from the concierge waiting to take guests back who insisted on not dampening the souls of our shoes. The hotel amenities were excellent but we did not use them as much. We had a half day in the spa centre with two different treatments which we enjoyed for a first experience also the weather forecast wasn't as nice so it filled the gap. We both would like to think that we will return in the not too distant future and look forward to the experience again. Read more

Our room was not available for 90 minutes after we arrived (after normal check in time) following 26 hours of travel from Australia. The hotel's decor is black and gray throughout and by this I mean curtains are black, blankets are black tartan, wall paper and woodwork is black. This all leads to a very depressing room. When getting ready for dinner, I could not find anywhere in the room bright enough to put on make-up. The nozzle on the hairdryer didn't fit due to it being melted […] so I couldn't do my hair properly either. When we arrived for dinner I told the maitre'd that we were booked for the dinner, bed and breakfast. She informed us that we had £70 to spend on food. We decided since we did not get a chance to celebrate our anniversary that we would splash out! Our bill was almost £200, the waitress had not taken off the £70. As we decided to pay all extra's in cash when we checked in we did not have to log our credit card with reception and so the waitress could not take the £70 off the bill. I was then escorted out of the FULL 5* restaurant to reception to log my card and my husband was left sitting alone in the restaurant for 15 minutes!! How embarassing!! The hotel did not have us booked for DBB!! I know I did book it because I phoned to previous week to confirm with the hotel. Overall, the beds were comfortable, the food was excellent. If we were away for a few nights I am sure the effects of what happened would not have been so bad but with us only staying one night it was a very expensive disaster. Stunning location on the Loch and a good selection of activities - the seaplane trip is highly recommended. Our room was very comfortable if a long walk from reception. Most staff were friendly but let down by one in particular who needs a refresher course in customer care and basic good manners. I thought the weakest aspect of the two-day stay was […] the quality of dinner. There are 3 onsite restaurants and one a couple of miles away at the golf club. Of the 3 onsite, Martin Wishart was closed on the 2 nights of our stay so we used the other 2. The Boathouse by the marina is a pleasant place to be but our Paella was dreadful and service was slow - perhaps best to stick with simpler dishes there. The Grill was better and my scallop starter was very good indeed. However my medium rare sirloin was very dense and a bit dry, and wife's pork a tad underdone. We stayed for a few nights in mid july, the weather was awful but we made the best of things despite this. Having stayed a couple of times previously we couldnt help thinking on this occassion that Cameron House seems to have lost a little bit of its magical qualities. The service is a bit hit or miss these days, from extremely friendly / helpful valets […] meeting and making you feel welcome on arrival to rather cold, perhaps even brusque, receptionists making you feel somewhat uncomfortable, very strange for a top class establishment ? The hotel appeared to be quite full and the staff on duty, many of whom are very young nowadays, mostly did their best to attend to everybody as well they could. Beautiful hotel and surroundings are exceptional. (Thankfully we even recieved some sunshine during our stay which is unusual in Scotland.)Cannot compliment the staff enough. A very expensive hotel from which I expected the best. Grand exterior and modus operandi. Nice views of loch from room. But . . . . Lift access only to floor below. Overall, looked like old rooms that had been partially updated with style rather than convenience in mind. The 'suite' was not really a suite, but a room with a bed annexe. Stags heads […] and tartan, but no shelving or storage of any kind in the small, cramped bedroom area, so that we had to use the 'sitting room' to store our suitcases and organise clothes etc, making it look constantly untidy and negating the 'period country house' decor. Occasional woodlouse. The lighting was less than ideal; 2 lamps and a ceiling light did not work. The opposite of compact, there would have been lots of space, but it was crammed with bulky old furniture and thus cluttered and inconvenient. The bathroom looked stylish but was inconvenient to use. Wet room and toilet both had glass doors !!! and nowhere to put anything. Trendy high-sided bath not suitable for older arthritic people and, again, had nowhere to put requisites. Trendy double sinks shallow and impossible to use without getting water everywhere. Venetian blind very dusty until pointed out. The restaurant was extremely expensive and not entirely worth it. The only minus point was that our waitress in the Cameron Grill was a bit random, in need of quite a bit of training, and really not up to the standards of the rest of the hotel. I highly recommend Cameron House for so many reasons. The location is absolutely beautiful, hotel quality is excellent in terms of decor, cleanliness, facilities, and choice of food and drinks. Especially recommend the Whisky Bar if you like a little tipple! Furthermore, what really makes this place is the service.
