"I believe it is the best hotel in that area."
I didn't appreciate the fact that they were trying to charge me again for the room, after I had already paid it in Expedia. I don't know if it was Expedia's fault or the hotel's, but had I not fought it and had I paid double, it would have been very bad. Lack of coordination from Expedia, possibly.

"Under-Managed"
The hotel wants to be a sophisticated, high end spa destination. The staff is sincere at trying to be that. But in the execution Alexander House fails. For the price, minor things should not go wrong. But the safe in our room did not work. At the one breakfast we ate at the hotel, the fruit plate we ordered never arrived and other items were unavailable. At dinners, the amuse bouche was the same each of 3 nights--a potato leak soup--and the menu never changed. Guests were not warned ahead to book tables for dinner and on weekends locals crowded out the guests from prime dining hours. On one dinner bill the waiter forgot to charge for drinks and had to be reminded. Service at the restaurant was frequently slow despite lots of staff (all of whom seemed very young). At a lower price point and with less up-front pretentiousness these would be minor matters. But at luxury prices and positioning, there is a lack of attention to detail here that suggests it needs experienced managers to teach the eager but under trained staff how to live up to the hotel's billing.

"Nice country-side break close to London"
We`ve spent a couple of days it the property and much enjoyed it. The hotel is lovely. The stuff is very helpful and nice. The room was a bit dark, but apart from it very nice - clean, spacious and nicely decorated. Both restaurants offer delicious food. The spa-center is lovely, especially a hot-tub outside - it was so good to sit in a hot tube under the moon sky.

"not worth the money."
bad points- - room ceiling was 6 ft. far too low and cramped. - bathroom door would not lock -seperate wc without window - house keeping would have to be prompted - overall service was 3 star at best - spa over priced by 30% - AG fine dining restaurant- food was avergage, service was poor - no hall room - much less grand than portrayed

"Think Downton Abbey experience...."
Think Downton Abbey.... Arriving to the welcoming door men, taking your bags for you and seeing you to reception. The smell of open fires with amazingly large fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, antique furniture and beautiful decor. This is just the hotel. The spa, again amazing; a choice of spas (indoor and out), wonderful massaging jets, swimming pool, sauna, wet room and large changing rooms with fluffy towels, hair dryers, hair straighteners, and all the other toiletries one requires. We didn't book any treatments, the hotel and the spa are tonic enough! This was our second stay, we travelled over 3 hours just to stay here again, and it was well worth it. We had a meal in AG's a la carte restaurant, which was delicious, but sadly I was too full from the aperitifs that you are given beforehand to fully enjoy my main meal. We have stayed in many five star hotels here and abroad, but this one takes some beating!

"Awesome spa!"
Lovely setting and grand looking hotel with a beautiful spa area. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room itself however (Chelsea)was not of a 5 star standard unfortunately. Although the view was good the windows were quite dirty and painted shut apart from one. The interleading door rattled all night and there was no minibar. I would still recommend this hotel though, based purely on the spa (possibly the best one that I have been to).

My partner and i stayed in Alexander House for just one night. The staff were very welcoming and the old part of the hotel was delightful. I would highly recommend the he made beefburger from the bar! The spa is one of the best I have seen with indoor and outdoor fascilities. The only negative from our stay was the price of treatments. These are by far the most expensive i have ever seen. Would highly recommend this hotel and we'll certainly visit again.

"Best Hotel I have Ever Stayed At"
WOW!! I booked this hotel for one night for my BFF's birthday treat. We stayed in the Chestnut Suite. The room was large and comfortable. There was a double shower and a free standing bath in the bathroom. The bed was so comfortable. We spent a lot of time walking round the grounds as the weather was lovely during our stay, the hot tub in the pretty gardens was lovely and there were plenty of sunbeds available to relax in the sunshine. The indoor pool area was unbelievable, The jacuzzi was MASSIVE! There were several different buttons you could press to operate different water features, we spent ages having fun in there. The sauna and steam room were fantastic too with a really lovely surprise cold shower feature to cool down afterwards. We ate in the brasserie restaurant as we fancied something a little informal for our evening meal. It was everything we could have hoped for and more. My BFF had steak and I had lobster pasta, we shared tender stem broccoli and spinach as sides. It was all amazing! Overall this hotel was out of this world!! The service was impeccable from beginning to end. I can't wait until I return! I LOVE ALEXANDER HOUSE xxx

"Special birthday treat"
Hotel, spa, room, front of house, concierge absolutely superb, just what you expect for £245 per night. Restraunt staff absolutely appalling, no attention to detail like a steak knife for steak, I had to ask, forgetting the order literally five minutes after order, wrong drinks delivered to the table and the food was average in the reflections restraunt, not what we expected following the arrival experience. The turn down service was a joke, they literally just pulled the corners of the duvet back, pillows were as we left them after an afternoon nap, and they took our chilled water out of the fridge and left it to warm!? Oh they did empty the bin.., breakfast service was equally underwhelming.

"Lovely location, awfull rooms and service"
We arrived and were shown to our room called Devonshire, don't stay in is room. It was a cool evening however it was way too warm as only part of one window would open. The rest of the windows were painted over. With the window open you could smell the extracter fan from the kitchen. The service at the hotel was awfull, it took a long time to find someone to talk to about the room where we were offered a junior suite at extra cost which we declined as it was ridiculous for this standard of room. At drinks in the evening and breakfast the next day service was very slow, over an hour for breakfast to arrive. The staff appeared uninterested and overworked.

"Secluded luxury resort"
The most notable part was that the service was excellent throughout although we happened to check in at the same time as a large wedding, so the staff were stretched to the limit. Room was nice with a very large and well decorated bathroom. I would probably opt to pay extra for a nicer room (we had chosen the basic room) in order to have some kind of view. Now all that we saw were the AC units on the back of the hotel. The spa was a bit run down and they needed to close the pool due to technical issues at one point. It was also disappointing that the sauna and steam rooms are in the changing rooms, and thereby not shared. The outdoor Jacuzzi was very nice and cozy. My wife tried the spa treatments and she was happy with the massage and facial treatment. The restaurant was good albeit a bit expensive by local standard. I can imagine that it would get a bit dull if one stayed more than a couple of nights. All in all the positives far outweighed the negatives of our stay. We liked it and are considering to go back.

I recently stayed at this hotel and the spa was the absolute highlight of the stay. The service was excellent. My room was lovely, although a bit stuffy as the air con was broken and they tried but failed to fix it. "Hotel Alexandra"
Three night stay, restaurant used on two evening Friday and Sunday, service on Friday exceptional and food of a very high standard. Unfortunatly the Sunday was not of the same standard, table booked from 20:00 shown to our table on time but we were not given a menu until 20:35, starter ordered at 20:50 when staff eventually returned but did not arrive on the table until 21:15, (quility of starter very good and no complaints) Main course did not arrive until 21:40 and although the quility and experiance was of a very high standard the food arrived on the table a little chilled but worth the wait. Room service on the whole very good but we where required on one day the phone reception and query the non arrival of staff to replenish consumables and clean the room, this arrranged very promptly. On the whole the experiance was very pleasant with only those small complaints listed above to dampen an experiance that I would recomend to others. Extensive use of the swimming pool ECT that made the whole experiance one to remember.

"Pleasing property close to Gatwick excellent spa."
I had read the previous reviews before booking this hotel with hope that I did not end up in the attic room up the tiny staircase, but guess what I did!! However although it did have lower ceilings and was obviously up in the eves it was not unpleasant. The bed was extremely comfortable and as I was only staying one night before flying from Gatwick it was adequate. Huge well equipped bathroom. I had a lovely afternoon tea in the pretty garden area, room service for dinner and breakfast in the equally pretty courtyard restaurant all were of a good standard. I had an excellent treatment in the spa which was obviously very popular as it was very busy. This was a most pleasant change from staying at one of the sterile airport hotels. Would definitely stay here if flying from Gatwick again.

"Nice but not worth the cost"
Hotel and Spa were nice? Our beef was about two things, firstly the value for money, they charge top end prices for everything, and its not top end. The service in many instances fell short of what you'd expect of an expensive 5 start hotel. No big dramas, just not attentive enough.

"Near perfect and close to Gatwick"
The hotel and grounds of this lovely hotel are perfect.Lots of outdoor space to sit and relax. Our stay was great other than the room which, by the way, was the only available room when we checked in. The room was very small even by European standards and there was no air conditioning which made it nearly unbearable. But, that said the hotel is really great and the staff accommodating. The spa is fantastic and the hydro pool is perfect especially after jet lag!!! All in all a great experience and even better if we could have a larger room.

"Perfect stay for a romantic getaway"
On arrival we were warmly welcomed and check-in was swift. All staff were pleasant and not intrusive when relaxing in the lovely grounds. The room was well maintained and bed very comfortable. Even with a wedding disco a going on it was very quiet. Only slight thing is the lovely shower design means after spending a long time in there the bathroom floor was very wet, and the very large bath took a very long time to fill.

"Great for a romantic getaway."
Fabulously decorated, olde world hotel with top quality professional staff. We arrived late for a one night stay which was the most disappointing part as could not really make the most of the stay. Dinner in the less formal restaurant was wonderful; would have loved to try the formal dining room but time and money would not permit! We stayed in the Windsor room which was an attic room with a quirky yet perfect bedroom/bathroom design; I cannot say enough about this luxurious hotel. Also very close to Gatwick airport for those who'd like to start their holiday one day early. Only suggestion I would make is a lighted sign outside the property..it took us a while to find in the dark winding country roads, even with a sat nav.

"Was it a 5 star hotel and experience!!!! "
07/30/15 Daleyjackson London
I have to say it was a little better than a average rating but it I could not give it a very good rating for the following reasons Our room was a classic room at £300 per night I was expecting something really special I have to say that I was disappointed how small it was the bed and the two bedside cabinets couldn't have been any closer to the walls Bathroom was really nice well equipped plenty of space. Closet space not great a safe and fridge inside full size hanging was out. Tea and coffee facilities no covers on the cups not great cups not even turned down and so close to the door. Pre ordered strawberries to be in the room on arrival...none.... Not a great first impression asking for a turn down service at a particular time was not adhered too. tea and coffee was offered by the hotel never arrived... Small things but when you stay in such a fine establishments you expect your experience to be memorable for all the right reasons. Spa treatments excellent Pool Spa area ... On entering looked neglected staff should have been on the ball keeping it looking tidy at least. Breakfast buffet... Pretty poor just a few cereals and fruit no pastries breads meats cheeses on display a few pastry offered in the basket bought to the table. Sausages good quality Dinner in reflections was pleasant. I believe that if you hold a 5* credit rating then all aspects should reflect this after all you will and are charged for 5 * facilities. Subsequently I have seen special offers on Groupon to this hotel those prices reflect the services we actually received not what we paid... Such a shame I didn't see the offers before I booked directly with the hotel. Would I return.... Honestly yes but they would need to improve to impress me we frequently stay in 5 * establishments I know what is good what is excellent and what should be exceptional.

"Beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting!"
07/29/15 Clara_Tamburrino Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
My partner and i had an overnight stay at Alexander Hotel. As soon as we arrived, in typical English style, the heavens opened up on us! I was pretty gutted about this as my plan was to spend most our stay in the gardens. Obviously this was not the hotels fault but i was feeling pretty dissapointed. However as soon as i stepped into the hotel this didn't matter anymore. The service from all the staff was great and i had such a perfect evening in the Reflections restaurant and then on to the champagne bar. I got a good deal from Travel Bird which included money to spend in one of the restaurants. It is NOT cheap and we still ended up having to pay a little towards it at the end. I'm not sure how i would feel about paying full price for the hotel but that doesn't mean it wasn't beautiful. Im just used to Travel Lodge prices ;-) We didn't have any spa treatments but we used the pool and jacuzzi which i loved. The sunshine shone for us the morning of check out so we got up early and sat and had a drink in the garden so got to appreciate the settings! I came away from the hotel feeling very happy and relaxed. Service was great. The room was rather basic but the bed was soooo comfy!

We have stayed here about four times now. Unfortuantly the prices seem to have gone up considerably over the last few years but it is still a great place, The service is excellent, all the staff very attentive. All the rooms we have ever stayed in are huge with fabulous big bathrooms, masses of towels and robes. My wife particually enjoye the spa which is complementary to guests. Giant big pool, lots of therapy jets, saunas, steam rooms and additonal treamtnets. The resturants are excellent. A beautiufl hotel in beautiful grounds.

"Beautiful hotel can't wait to go back"
07/28/15 Beth F Reading, United Kingdom
We stayed for one night's dinner bed and breakfast in one of the cedar lodge suites - Penshurst I think it was called. Lovely spacious well appointed room and fantastic bathroom - rain shower, huge bath, 2 sinks, 4 or 5 lighting choices! We were hoping to enjoy the grounds and the balcony given the time of year but unfortunately it was tipping with rain. Only negative of the room was it was quite dark from a natural light perspective - even the next morning when sun was out (certainly plenty of artificial light options to chose from however). We had dinner in the Reflections restaurant which is the more bistro style one. Food was excellent although service a little slow. Don't expect big portions! All the concierge staff were welcoming and eager to help in any way possible. You really did feel as though nothing was too much trouble. Certainly one of the better dinner b&b deals we have done but then you get what you pay for. Would love to return as stay far too brief!

"Good Start, salty middle and disappointing finish!"
07/27/15 Cmarking London
For context, this was a birthday treat for my wife and I and we probably get 1 or 2 nights on our own a year due to a young family. The good; the room was a good size, nicely decorated, the spar was great, and the staff were friendly. The bad; I can only describe the food in AG's restaurant as terrible. Not only did we wait 45 minutes for our starter, the mains were cold, the dishes were over seasoned with salt, the spinach and mushroom side dish had grit in it. I could go on but i am trying to be objective. Bearing in mind the occasion, i am now going to be hyper critical considering the price paid. Firstly, the house keeping was average, a letter to a previous guest was left in a draw were they wrote to complain about him smoking, secondly we found 2 dead spiders, thirdly we had a leak in our bathroom ceiling, fourth the dust between a locked door and the door frame was an impressive build up of god knows what and fifth, one of the mirror lights in the bathroom didn't work. Finally when checking out, our bill was wrong by applying several other rooms bills to ours. Normally i wouldn't have checked but after the previous issues and some other smaller gripes i am not listing as these were due to me being irritated rather than rationale, i decided to check. After a quick sorry and nothing more we were on our way. Most of the above in isolation wouldn't have bothered me and can be put down to an old hotel etc, but the total sum of the issues has led me to write this review. It has also encouraged me to start leaving positive reviews for all of the other amazing hotels i have stayed at, as it is normally the negative situations that lead me to writing so am not give a fair balance to all of the good ones!

"Didn't sleep well"
07/24/15 Irnbruiser London, United Kingdom
This is a lovely hotel with some great amenities. The spa is very well presented and maintained with a lovely outdoor hot-tub. We stayed in a junior suit was was spacious, very clean and well proportioned with a fantastic bathroom with double shower and large bath. All staff are responsive, polite and attentive and you fare made to feel special during your stay. There are a few of areas which didn't work for me though: 1. There is no air conditioning. 2. The bed was very soft 3. Service & gratuity of 12.5% automatically added to restaurant bill It's simply not acceptable to be paying in excess of £300 for a room to have no air conditioning, it wasn't even a particularly hot evening but the lack of air conditioning and the soft bed meant it was a very poor sleep. There was a portable fan in the room which we used but this made only a minor improvement. Additionally, when paying top dollar i do not expect to be issued with a bill in the hotel restaurant with a 12.5% service charge added. Surely at these rates the service must be included with only a gratuity necessary for excellent service. In summary however, this is a really lovely hotel, it is beautifully presented and has some great facilities and first class service.

I was taken here for my birthday by my husband for an overnight spa break. Considering the price of the stay at this hotel I left unimpressed. The staff are the best part of it - lovely and always happy to help. The hotel is stunning and large picturesque grounds. My quips are with the spa really. We arrived in our robes for our couples massage and told to take a seat. Even at my local spa I am offered a complimentary drink while I wait - here there is nothing but a menu you can order drinks from. The massage was okay, for £88pp could have been better - were not asked what kind of pressure we wanted. We then went to the pools area - which was VERY busy. The round pool was so cold i could not even stay in it. The larger pool was better but several tiles came off under my feet...the jacuzzi could only fit 4 people (very cosily!!) so we had about 5 minutes in there. The outside hot tub/pool again only fits about 6 people quite intimately - made to look much bigger online! Not amazing facilities for a spa hotel. Dinner was nice but expensive and not overly amazing - had to ask several times to follow up on drinks. Ordered breakfast in bed the next day which was a very small continental breakfast for £15 - mini pastries and some fruit! We also visited the champagne bar for after dinner cocktails and was told they had no limes, no rum, anything I asked for was not in stock... Also our room was hotter than the sun! We had the window open even during the night and a fan on and I was so hot I had to keep having regular cold showers! Absolutely unbearable resulting in a poor nights sleep despite a bed as soft as clouds! Nice hotel but in total cost us £570 for an overnight stay with a massage and 3 course dinner, they need to make improvements to justify the price, I wouldn't go back.

I booked this hotel through Secret Escapes and after having spent two nights here can say I am very impressed. Every member of staff is polite, professional and eager to help you. The room is beautiful, spotlessly clean, gorgeous bathroom and well appointed. Food, especially breakfast fantastic so much choice. Piping hot food. The grounds are beautiful, the spa to die for, so many secret gardens, sauna cabins, seating areas, different pools with Jacuzzi, loved every second here cant wait to go back.
