"I believe it is the best hotel in that area."
I didn't appreciate the fact that they were trying to charge me again for the room, after I had already paid it in Expedia. I don't know if it was Expedia's fault or the hotel's, but had I not fought it and had I paid double, it would have been very bad. Lack of coordination from Expedia, possibly.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel wants to be a sophisticated, high end spa destination. The staff is sincere at trying to be that. But in the execution Alexander House fails. For the price, minor things should not go wrong. But the safe in our room did not work. At the one breakfast we ate at the hotel, the fruit plate we ordered never arrived and other items were unavailable. […] At dinners, the amuse bouche was the same each of 3 nights--a potato leak soup--and the menu never changed. Guests were not warned ahead to book tables for dinner and on weekends locals crowded out the guests from prime dining hours. On one dinner bill the waiter forgot to charge for drinks and had to be reminded. Service at the restaurant was frequently slow despite lots of staff (all of whom seemed very young). At a lower price point and with less up-front pretentiousness these would be minor matters. But at luxury prices and positioning, there is a lack of attention to detail here that suggests it needs experienced managers to teach the eager but under trained staff how to live up to the hotel's billing. "not worth the money."
bad points- - room ceiling was 6 ft. far too low and cramped. - bathroom door would not lock -seperate wc without window - house keeping would have to be prompted - overall service was 3 star at best - spa over priced by 30% - AG fine dining restaurant- food was avergage, service was poor - no hall room - much less grand than portrayedGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Think Downton Abbey experience...."
Think Downton Abbey.... Arriving to the welcoming door men, taking your bags for you and seeing you to reception. The smell of open fires with amazingly large fireplaces, crystal chandeliers, antique furniture and beautiful decor. This is just the hotel. The spa, again amazing; a choice of spas (indoor and out), wonderful massaging jets, swimming pool, […] sauna, wet room and large changing rooms with fluffy towels, hair dryers, hair straighteners, and all the other toiletries one requires. We didn't book any treatments, the hotel and the spa are tonic enough! This was our second stay, we travelled over 3 hours just to stay here again, and it was well worth it. We had a meal in AG's a la carte restaurant, which was delicious, but sadly I was too full from the aperitifs that you are given beforehand to fully enjoy my main meal. We have stayed in many five star hotels here and abroad, but this one takes some beating! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Lovely setting and grand looking hotel with a beautiful spa area. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room itself however (Chelsea)was not of a 5 star standard unfortunately. Although the view was good the windows were quite dirty and painted shut apart from one. The interleading door rattled all night and there was no minibar. My partner and i stayed in Alexander House for just one night. The staff were very welcoming and the old part of the hotel was delightful. I would highly recommend the he made beefburger from the bar! The spa is one of the best I have seen with indoor and outdoor fascilities. The only negative from our stay was the price of treatments. These are by […] far the most expensive i have ever seen. Would highly recommend this hotel and we'll certainly visit again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"not really a 5 star service hotel"
As a international traveler staying at countless 5 star resorts, I was disappointed with the level of service you would expect from a 5 star rated hotel in terms of amenities and attention to detail. "Best Hotel I have Ever Stayed At"
WOW!! I booked this hotel for one night for my BFF's birthday treat. We stayed in the Chestnut Suite. The room was large and comfortable. There was a double shower and a free standing bath in the bathroom. The bed was so comfortable. We spent a lot of time walking round the grounds as the weather was lovely during our stay, the hot tub in the pretty […] gardens was lovely and there were plenty of sunbeds available to relax in the sunshine. The indoor pool area was unbelievable, The jacuzzi was MASSIVE! There were several different buttons you could press to operate different water features, we spent ages having fun in there. The sauna and steam room were fantastic too with a really lovely surprise cold shower feature to cool down afterwards. We ate in the brasserie restaurant as we fancied something a little informal for our evening meal. It was everything we could have hoped for and more. My BFF had steak and I had lobster pasta, we shared tender stem broccoli and spinach as sides. It was all amazing! Overall this hotel was out of this world!! The service was impeccable from beginning to end. I can't wait until I return! I LOVE ALEXANDER HOUSE xxx Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Special birthday treat"
Hotel, spa, room, front of house, concierge absolutely superb, just what you expect for £245 per night. Restraunt staff absolutely appalling, no attention to detail like a steak knife for steak, I had to ask, forgetting the order literally five minutes after order, wrong drinks delivered to the table and the food was average in the reflections restraunt, […] not what we expected following the arrival experience. The turn down service was a joke, they literally just pulled the corners of the duvet back, pillows were as we left them after an afternoon nap, and they took our chilled water out of the fridge and left it to warm!? Oh they did empty the bin.., breakfast service was equally underwhelming. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Lovely location, awfull rooms and service"
We arrived and were shown to our room called Devonshire, don't stay in is room. It was a cool evening however it was way too warm as only part of one window would open. The rest of the windows were painted over. With the window open you could smell the extracter fan from the kitchen. The service at the hotel was awfull, it took a long time to find someone […] to talk to about the room where we were offered a junior suite at extra cost which we declined as it was ridiculous for this standard of room. At drinks in the evening and breakfast the next day service was very slow, over an hour for breakfast to arrive. The staff appeared uninterested and overworked. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Secluded luxury resort"
The most notable part was that the service was excellent throughout although we happened to check in at the same time as a large wedding, so the staff were stretched to the limit. Room was nice with a very large and well decorated bathroom. I would probably opt to pay extra for a nicer room (we had chosen the basic room) in order to have some kind of […] view. Now all that we saw were the AC units on the back of the hotel. The spa was a bit run down and they needed to close the pool due to technical issues at one point. It was also disappointing that the sauna and steam rooms are in the changing rooms, and thereby not shared. The outdoor Jacuzzi was very nice and cozy. My wife tried the spa treatments and she was happy with the massage and facial treatment. The restaurant was good albeit a bit expensive by local standard. I can imagine that it would get a bit dull if one stayed more than a couple of nights. All in all the positives far outweighed the negatives of our stay. We liked it and are considering to go back. Three night stay, restaurant used on two evening Friday and Sunday, service on Friday exceptional and food of a very high standard. Unfortunatly the Sunday was not of the same standard, table booked from 20:00 shown to our table on time but we were not given a menu until 20:35, starter ordered at 20:50 when staff eventually returned but did not arrive […] on the table until 21:15, (quility of starter very good and no complaints) Main course did not arrive until 21:40 and although the quility and experiance was of a very high standard the food arrived on the table a little chilled but worth the wait. Room service on the whole very good but we where required on one day the phone reception and query the non arrival of staff to replenish consumables and clean the room, this arrranged very promptly. On the whole the experiance was very pleasant with only those small complaints listed above to dampen an experiance that I would recomend to others. Extensive use of the swimming pool ECT that made the whole experiance one to remember. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Pleasing property close to Gatwick excellent spa."
I had read the previous reviews before booking this hotel with hope that I did not end up in the attic room up the tiny staircase, but guess what I did!! However although it did have lower ceilings and was obviously up in the eves it was not unpleasant. The bed was extremely comfortable and as I was only staying one night before flying from Gatwick […] it was adequate. Huge well equipped bathroom. I had a lovely afternoon tea in the pretty garden area, room service for dinner and breakfast in the equally pretty courtyard restaurant all were of a good standard. I had an excellent treatment in the spa which was obviously very popular as it was very busy. This was a most pleasant change from staying at one of the sterile airport hotels. Would definitely stay here if flying from Gatwick again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice but not worth the cost"
Hotel and Spa were nice? Our beef was about two things, firstly the value for money, they charge top end prices for everything, and its not top end. The service in many instances fell short of what you'd expect of an expensive 5 start hotel. No big dramas, just not attentive enough.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Near perfect and close to Gatwick"
The hotel and grounds of this lovely hotel are perfect.Lots of outdoor space to sit and relax. Our stay was great other than the room which, by the way, was the only available room when we checked in. The room was very small even by European standards and there was no air conditioning which made it nearly unbearable. But, that said the hotel is really […] great and the staff accommodating. On arrival we were warmly welcomed and check-in was swift. All staff were pleasant and not intrusive when relaxing in the lovely grounds. The room was well maintained and bed very comfortable. "Room Too Small for Comfort"
The room was too small. I actually had to duck my head every time I walked around the bed to get from the bathroom to the TV/desk to avoid hitting it on the slanting wall. Not exactly five-star comfort.Genuine Expedia guest review
Read many reviews about this hotel before booking. The room was an attic room up a musty dark staircase which was very disappointing as we were expecting luxurious. Although the restaurant food was lovely and the service was outstanding, it was overpriced however the overwhelming five star spa redeemed our experience..Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great for a romantic getaway."
Fabulously decorated, olde world hotel with top quality professional staff. We arrived late for a one night stay which was the most disappointing part as could not really make the most of the stay. Dinner in the less formal restaurant was wonderful; would have loved to try the formal dining room but time and money would not permit! We stayed in the […] Windsor room which was an attic room with a quirky yet perfect bedroom/bathroom design; I cannot say enough about this luxurious hotel. Also very close to Gatwick airport for those who'd like to start their holiday one day early. Only suggestion I would make is a lighted sign outside the property..it took us a while to find in the dark winding country roads, even with a sat nav. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Beautiful building and spa. Shame that nothing worked in our room! The CD player wasn't working, we had only 3 channels on the TV, window in bathroom would not shut (the manager tried too) bathroom lights would not turn on. Duvet had blood on it. Staff very sweet but incredibly immature and inexperienced. After an overpriced meal in 'relfections' we […] were told by a lad to leave with no explanation (assumed as it was closing?)Very odd, didn't offer to carry our wine to room. Spa lovely but again, staff are sweet to chat to however they told me the towel washing machine was not working, i need to know because??! Wouldn't stay again. "They turn off the heating at midnight in the middle of winter!!!"
01/28/15 TravellingNomad80 London, United Kingdom
My husband and I stayed here as we wanted a relaxing weekend away. For the price we paid, we were expecting top 5* luxury. I have stayed at plenty of 5* hotels but Alexander House was ridiculously over priced for many reasons... 1) It was middle of December and they turned off the heating in the whole hotel. When we complained, they told us there was a problem with the heating. However next morning, one of the staff actually admitted they turn off the heating every night at midnight. Wow! I wouldn't even expect a hostel to do this in the middle of winter, never mind a hotel charging £200+ per night!!! 2) After spending a day in the spa, we came to our room in the evening to have a shower. At turndown, we asked housekeeping to give us fresh towels. We left the room and let them clean up. When we came back, our wet towels had been picked up from the bathroom floor and hung up!!! I have never come across this level of service in my life. I was completely outraged. 3) The bathroom had no adequate heating and was like an iceberg especially in the morning and at night. The bedroom has a small radiator so when the heating is on, the room doesn't really get hot. 4) Paying such a high price for the hotel, I would expect good service in all areas. We went out for a walk in the grounds. The hotel provides wellington boots to walk in the muddy grounds. Many people must have been for a walk before us and the wellies had thick wet mud all over them. Can't the staff at least clean the boots after each use so the guests don't get their hands and clothes dirty as they put them on? We used the pool, Jacuzzi and outdoor hot tub. The pool was nothing special - too many people and not enough chairs to sit around the pool. The outdoor hot tub was nice. Considering this is a hotel where many couples come to relax, they should have unisex saunas. We didn't use the sauna since they were separate men and women. Overall, the hotel is ok set in lovely grounds but is only worth the stay if the rooms are priced at around £60/night with breakfast included. On top of our heavy room price, they were going to charge us £40 for breakfast that looked very ordinary. So we went out instead and had the same type breakfast for under £10 in a lovely café. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. When we checked out, we complained to the manager who gave us some discount on our bill. Although I am grateful we got a price reduction, the rate we paid after the discount was still completely overpriced. I would not come back here again or recommend this hotel to anyone.

That was our second visit in the last couple of years, from the moment we arrived everything was great. We often visit our friends in the nearest town. Charming hotel, spa looks just fantastic and the service is excellent. Loved the old fashioned feeling on the reception side of the hotel. The utopia spa is relaxed and well looked after. Swimming pool is also high class. The champagne bar service was great, sitting next to the fireplace was amazing with a glass of wine! Beautiful grounds for walk, definitely a try! We asked for a little tour then we were shown to the bar, restaurant and spa however the porter (I am not sure about his name, probably Gregor..) He seemed very cold and not interested about his duty, just walked in front of us with no smile or any kindness, we had to stop him as he did not turned back to see if we are still walking after him... no information given about anything just pointing out and rushing all.The receptionist lady was kind and polite and always helpful. Utopia staff could not be better! Overall it is an amazing place, we will definitely come back for Spa Day! Recommend!
"Beautiful interior and exterior."
We have stayed at Alexander house a couple of times and are always impressed by the beautiful rooms and suites and the impeccable service, however the brasserie lacks atmosphere and can make the dining experience seem a bit flat. Such a shame in such a beautiful hotel!
"Lovely afternoon tea"
01/27/15 littlel3x Brighton, United Kingdom
We visited Alexander House last Sunday for Afternoon Tea. The tea itself was served in a beautiful room on some amazing crockery! The afternoon tea selection was great and the staff accommodating when my friend stated that she couldn't eat fish and they provided a separate plate of sandwiches. My only gripe (and it is fairly small!) was that when we tried to order another drink from a waiter that was wandering around we were told that wasn't his department and to order from someone else and when it came time to pay we had to seek out someone and go to reception. Small gripes and I would recommend people to visit as the tea made up for it!
"Not the 5* Experience I was Expecting....."
01/26/15 Nina C Langdon Hills, null, United Kingdom
We had a weekend stay at the hotel and although we enjoyed ourselves and the hotel staff were friendly and helpful, I cant help being disappointed by the whole experience. I had a gelish pedicure booked, which cost £60. I was hoping for a special treatment but was just put in a chair in the corner of the room, a quick bit of cuticle work was carried out and the gel applied. To be honest, I could have got a better treatment from a local salon at a fraction of the price. Spa is fine, nothing wrong at all, however there were only sauna, steam and pools. Nothing amazing, compared to other spas I have attended. More like leisure facilities than Spa. Outside Jacuzzi was nice. We had dinner at Reflections. Not a great experience, staff were not attentive and were more concerned with laying out the tables for breakfast the next morning than looking after the dinner guests they had. Food average and for the price, not worth it. We decided to take breakfast in our room the next day which I have to say was perfect and would recommend this option. I am not saying its not a nice place, I just dont think it is worth the money. For a 1 night break it cost us £500. I would expect a real 5* experience but the hotel just didn’t deliver. Cant say I would stay again, as I know I could get a lot more for my money elsewhere.

Greeting on arrival is outstanding, all staff throughout the hotel are extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel itself its a fabulous old house with real character throughout. First impression of our bedroom (the Edinburgh) was wow, very clean, nice decor and very large bathroom, although that night going to sleep there was alot of noise, outside the bathroom window as it seemed to be the staff smoking area. There was a constant sound of what I think was a water pump all night long on the ceiling right above the bed. During the night I had to use the bathroom but the lights would not turn on, I had to use the torch on my phone. The next day the deputy manager arrived up and flicked the switch inside the wardrobe, this must be re-occurring issue in this room as he knew straight away on arrival what the issue was. . The spa was really nice and also very clean but be aware the sauna and steam room are separate for ladies and gents. The furniture around the pool could be improved to give a more relaxing experience i.e waterproof cushions. We were lucky to get to experience the outdoor jacuzzi which was lovely treat on a cold January evening, although I did almost fall on the slippery decking area as the ground was not salted. Apart from a few improvements it is a nice hotel to experience and the hotel grounds are amazing. The comments above are merely constructive criticism as we had a very enjoyable weekend.
"Mother and daughter time"
01/25/15 Sue C Portsmouth, United Kingdom
I booked a 2 night stay so that my daughter and I (it was her 18th present) could have some quality time together away from everything. From the moment we arrived nothing was too much trouble for the staff. They were attentive, very polite and accommodating, making us feel very special. Every time you passed one of them they would acknowledge you. Over our 2 nights, the 2 breakfasts and dinners we had in Reflections restaurant were excellent. The food is comparable to the top brasseries and grills I have visited. The spa area is very relaxing, wandering around in a robe and slippers all day....as for the treatments, the ladies were very nice, welcoming and I felt incredibly relaxed after the head massage! Well worth the money for a stay in pure luxury. The dream weekend didn't end on leaving the hotel door, the concierge team insisted on carrying out luggage to the car. Then unfortunately it was back to reality. I recommend this hotel most sincerely.

We often stay in this hotel before we fly off anywhere as its close to Gatwick. They have two restaurants, which are both very good. The fine dining one is always a treat with their homemade breads. Very good wine list. The grounds are stunning. We've stayed in many of the rooms, and they're all furnished to a high standard. Very enjoyable.

For my daughters birthday, we decided to have a mother and daughter treat, so she booked Alexander house. Well from the moment we got there we were treated with out standing curtesy , and politeness . We booked in for our treatment but had time to visit the pool sauna and steam room all of which was perfect . The pool was lovely, water warm and very peaceful we were lucky there was not many people there. Braved the hot tub as it was a very frosty January morning , it was great fun.again we were lucky that there was just the two of us. We both had a back massage and facial. Which was a great treat, our room was beautiful and very clean, with lots of nice little touches. The food was lovely, best mussles I've ever tasted. The waitresses couldn't possibley be more caring . I can hardly believe the review someone left before, my daughter and I think she must have gone to another hotel.. We will Deffinatly recommend this hotel and spa .
"Very good....in parts!"
01/21/15 S G Leicester, United Kingdom
On arrival, you are greeted by very welcoming front of house staff who really do their best to look after you. Nothing is too much trouble. We were shown to room 'Elm', which was fine, if a little old fashioned. The problem was that it overlooked the outdoor hot tub, making it rather public and noisy. We asked if we could move to another room but the hotel was fully booked. Ag's restaurant for dinner was really superb, delicious food and excellent service. Sadly we were woken at 11.45 that night by noisy smokers outside trying to get in to the hot tub!! Next morning we asked again, and the manager was very apologetic. He moved us to an upgraded room in the new garden suite.('Sheffield') wow! What a fantastic room. Look at the pictures on the website. Wow, what a room. And the bathroom, perfect. Breakfast in reflections restaurant was a noisy bustling affair, but the food was nice. Dinner in reflections lacked atmosphere. The room feels more like a cafe than a smart restaurant, but the food was good. The spa facilities are first class. Overall a lovely hotel, but you need to pick the right room.
