The hotel wants to be a sophisticated, high end spa destination. The staff is sincere at trying to be that. But in the execution Alexander House fails. For the price, minor things should not go wrong. But the safe in our room did not work. At the one breakfast we ate at the hotel, the fruit plate we ordered never arrived and other items were unavailable. […] At dinners, the amuse bouche was the same each of 3 nights--a potato leak soup--and the menu never changed. Guests were not warned ahead to book tables for dinner and on weekends locals crowded out the guests from prime dining hours. On one dinner bill the waiter forgot to charge for drinks and had to be reminded. Service at the restaurant was frequently slow despite lots of staff (all of whom seemed very young). At a lower price point and with less up-front pretentiousness these would be minor matters. But at luxury prices and positioning, there is a lack of attention to detail here that suggests it needs experienced managers to teach the eager but under trained staff how to live up to the hotel's billing. "Best Hotel I have Ever Stayed At"
WOW!! I booked this hotel for one night for my BFF's birthday treat. We stayed in the Chestnut Suite. The room was large and comfortable. There was a double shower and a free standing bath in the bathroom. The bed was so comfortable. We spent a lot of time walking round the grounds as the weather was lovely during our stay, the hot tub in the pretty […] gardens was lovely and there were plenty of sunbeds available to relax in the sunshine. The indoor pool area was unbelievable, The jacuzzi was MASSIVE! There were several different buttons you could press to operate different water features, we spent ages having fun in there. The sauna and steam room were fantastic too with a really lovely surprise cold shower feature to cool down afterwards. We ate in the brasserie restaurant as we fancied something a little informal for our evening meal. It was everything we could have hoped for and more. My BFF had steak and I had lobster pasta, we shared tender stem broccoli and spinach as sides. It was all amazing! Overall this hotel was out of this world!! "Secluded luxury resort"
The most notable part was that the service was excellent throughout although we happened to check in at the same time as a large wedding, so the staff were stretched to the limit. Room was nice with a very large and well decorated bathroom. I would probably opt to pay extra for a nicer room (we had chosen the basic room) in order to have some kind of […] view. Now all that we saw were the AC units on the back of the hotel. The spa was a bit run down and they needed to close the pool due to technical issues at one point. It was also disappointing that the sauna and steam rooms are in the changing rooms, and thereby not shared. The outdoor Jacuzzi was very nice and cozy. My wife tried the spa treatments and she was happy with the massage and facial treatment. The restaurant was good albeit a bit expensive by local standard. I can imagine that it would get a bit dull if one stayed more than a couple of nights. All in all the positives far outweighed the negatives of our stay. We liked it and are considering to go back. "Beautiful hotel and one of the best spas ever"
I recently stayed at this hotel and the spa was the absolute highlight of the stay. The service was excellent. Nice hotel. But it's not a 5 star. Staff is perfect as well as the service. But again guys, only because I compare it with the real 5 star hotels the facilities, that's why it is not a 5 star to me. But overall I had a lovely time and would still recommend it to anyone else who is probably looking for a proper 4 star hotels and an amazing SPA day outside […] London. Excellent service, lovely location, good facilitiesGenuine Expedia guest review
Three night stay, restaurant used on two evening Friday and Sunday, service on Friday exceptional and food of a very high standard. Unfortunatly the Sunday was not of the same standard, table booked from 20:00 shown to our table on time but we were not given a menu until 20:35, starter ordered at 20:50 when staff eventually returned but did not arrive […] on the table until 21:15, (quility of starter very good and no complaints) Main course did not arrive until 21:40 and although the quility and experiance was of a very high standard the food arrived on the table a little chilled but worth the wait. Room service on the whole very good but we where required on one day the phone reception and query the non arrival of staff to replenish consumables and clean the room, this arrranged very promptly. On the whole the experiance was very pleasant with only those small complaints listed above to dampen an experiance that I would recomend to others. Extensive use of the swimming pool ECT that made the whole experiance one to remember. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Pleasing property close to Gatwick excellent spa."
I had read the previous reviews before booking this hotel with hope that I did not end up in the attic room up the tiny staircase, but guess what I did!! However although it did have lower ceilings and was obviously up in the eves it was not unpleasant. The bed was extremely comfortable and as I was only staying one night before flying from Gatwick […] it was adequate. Huge well equipped bathroom. I had a lovely afternoon tea in the pretty garden area, room service for dinner and breakfast in the equally pretty courtyard restaurant all were of a good standard. I had an excellent treatment in the spa which was obviously very popular as it was very busy. This was a most pleasant change from staying at one of the sterile airport hotels. Would definitely stay here if flying from Gatwick again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice but not worth the cost"
Hotel and Spa were nice? Our beef was about two things, firstly the value for money, they charge top end prices for everything, and its not top end. The service in many instances fell short of what you'd expect of an expensive 5 start hotel. No big dramas, just not attentive enough.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Near perfect and close to Gatwick"
The hotel and grounds of this lovely hotel are perfect.Lots of outdoor space to sit and relax. Our stay was great other than the room which, by the way, was the only available room when we checked in. The room was very small even by European standards and there was no air conditioning which made it nearly unbearable. But, that said the hotel is really […] great and the staff accommodating. The spa is fantastic and the hydro pool is perfect especially after jet lag!!! All in all a great experience and even better if we could have a larger room. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Perfect stay for a romantic getaway"
On arrival we were warmly welcomed and check-in was swift. All staff were pleasant and not intrusive when relaxing in the lovely grounds. The room was well maintained and bed very comfortable. Even with a wedding disco a going on it was very quiet. Only slight thing is the lovely shower design means after spending a long time in there the bathroom floor […] was very wet, and the very large bath took a very long time to fill. Lovely hotel in so many ways. Nice spa and treatments... Beautiful bedroom and view. Dinner was slightly disappointing... Food was good but service was slow and they played music better suited to a cruise throughout the meal.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Room Too Small for Comfort"
The room was too small. I actually had to duck my head every time I walked around the bed to get from the bathroom to the TV/desk to avoid hitting it on the slanting wall. Not exactly five-star comfort.Genuine Expedia guest review
Read many reviews about this hotel before booking. The room was an attic room up a musty dark staircase which was very disappointing as we were expecting luxurious. Although the restaurant food was lovely and the service was outstanding, it was overpriced however the overwhelming five star spa redeemed our experience..Genuine Hotels.com guest review
After being let down by two previous hotels on this trip it was an absolute pleasure to stay here! Gorgeous bed and linens! Wonderful extremely helpful staff! A pleasure!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great for a romantic getaway."
Fabulously decorated, olde world hotel with top quality professional staff. We arrived late for a one night stay which was the most disappointing part as could not really make the most of the stay. Dinner in the less formal restaurant was wonderful; would have loved to try the formal dining room but time and money would not permit! We stayed in the […] Windsor room which was an attic room with a quirky yet perfect bedroom/bathroom design; I cannot say enough about this luxurious hotel. Also very close to Gatwick airport for those who'd like to start their holiday one day early. Only suggestion I would make is a lighted sign outside the property..it took us a while to find in the dark winding country roads, even with a sat nav. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Lovely spa is definetely worth to try it. the quality of water was really good! Room was reasonablely good. The food in hotel restuarant was fine except the portion. "4 star Fawlty Towers & dirty duvet."
Beautiful building and spa. Shame that nothing worked in our room! The CD player wasn't working, we had only 3 channels on the TV, window in bathroom would not shut (the manager tried too) bathroom lights would not turn on. Duvet had blood on it. Staff very sweet but incredibly immature and inexperienced. After an overpriced meal in 'relfections' we […] were told by a lad to leave with no explanation (assumed as it was closing?)Very odd, didn't offer to carry our wine to room. Spa lovely but again, staff are sweet to chat to however they told me the towel washing machine was not working, i need to know because??! Wouldn't stay again. "Good small hotel"
The hotel was well located and easy to find. The staff were friendly and the room had nice decor and was comfortable. Our only problem was that the television did not work on some of the channels. I did report this and asked if it could be fixed by the evening when I returned but nothing had been done about it. I phoned reception 5 times to ask about […] it and there was no answer. My only other slight problem is that there was only 1 vegetarian meal on the menu, which doesn't exactly give you much choice - especially if you don't like risotto! Just returned from a beautiful 2 night stay at the Alexander House Hotel and spa. Had a truly wonderful and relaxing time. We received a fabulous welcome from staff and we were told we'd been upgraded to The Lodge. The Lodge is the new 2 bedroom property that is situated towards the exit of the grounds. As a couple we didn't really need the extra space, but it was beautiful and we were very impressed by the finish. The bathrooms were beautiful and the property was stunning. I'd really recommend this for two couples or a group/family wanting to stay together. It's far enough to feel like you're own little oasis but close enough to access the hotel and its facilities easily. The staff were fantastic and would pick us up in the golf buggy to take us to the main hotel and drop us off whenever we needed. It's around a 3 minute walk so often we just took a stroll instead. We dined in the reflections brasserie and AG's restaurant during our stay. AG's was fantastic and we had the beef wellington which was perfection. You can definitely tell the difference between the two restaurants but Reflections was fine for a light dinner. Breakfast was also very good. We also had champagne afternoon tea during the stay which was lovely. Very nice scones and sandwiches. The spa area is also very relaxing and absolutely immaculate. The spa pools were great and we loved the outdoor hot tub. We received some complimentary smoothies while we relaxing which was a nice touch and tasted fab! Overall, the service and facilities were fantastic and we would definitely recommend this hotel to others. Enjoy!
Well what can I say I will give an honest review on my personal experience me and my mum went for a tailor made1 spa day now it's not cheap for a "spa day" coming in at 600 pounds for 2 but let me say worth every single penny. The welcoming is friendly helpful and warm. The spa is fabulous I love the idea of getting your days rota in the morning wandering off and doing your own thing. You don't feel overpowered although it's very busy it doesn't seem it as it's so spacious and tranquil. The treatments were amazing however one slight hiccup I booked a double room and made it clear on booking me and my mum wanted to go in together however my mums therapist was slightly unfriendly stated she would have to get another room ready and said we will be loosing time on our treatments well I was unhappy let it go but I thought it was very naughty considering we spent 600 pounds and stated we wanted to be together. Anyway my therapist amazing my facial and massage were brilliant everything so professional and I felt brilliant. Overall I could not fault this hotel/spa one bit me and my mum enjoyed it so much we've decided to go every year and I will urge all my friends to treat there self. We'll worth there 5 stars it's my new favourite place worth every single penny!!
"Lovely stay but not 5 star all round"

We got a deal from Secret Escapes a for a one night stay, dinner, breakfast and use of the spa. The hotel is really lovely and we were well greeted. We were shown around the hotel and I liked that he even gave a bit of history about the place when showing us around. Our room was really great and I'd recommend it highly (Goodwood suite). A very good size with a four poster bed, and very comfortable pillows. It had all the necessary facilities, tea, coffee machine, iron, a good hair dryer, safe etc. The spa was lovely. Really good indoor pool which is nice and atmospheric. As well as the pool, there are a few different areas including jacuzzi, rain shower, which made it more of a spa experience rather than just a pool. There is an outdoor area with sunloungers and hot tub. Thids was OK but I didn't really think it was particularly special. The steam and sauna rooms are in the changing rooms so we couldn't go together as a couple. They didn't seem to be working properly either, as the steam room want particularly steamy or hot. I went in twice to see and the second time there was no steam at all even after 10 mins. We dined in the Reflections restaurant which is apparently the more relaxed one of the two restaurants they have. Food was OK, not particularly memorable. Service was also not very memorable, but I recall bad service in the same area for breakfast. Details further down... We went for a wander around after dinner and, although not very big, it was nice to enjoy the outdoors and be able to walk around a little. It seems to be a nice place as a wedding venue. We played a quick game of big chess while there. Quick because it was check mate in two moves! Unfair as my husband doesn't know how to play chess. Anyway... :) After a very comfortable nights sleep, we went down for breakfast. Cereals, oats and fruits were available for self serving and hot food could be ordered. We ordered tea and coffee first but then it took a long time for them to come back with drinks and take our order. Once ordered, we waited a very long time for the food to come out. Another couple had sat down to the right of us and we could see them getting frustrated with service too. They also waited a long time for service and food. At one point, the lady asked for jam for her toast (twice in fact) and ended up getting it herself from another table. The breakfast was OK itself, and after having to wait so long we had no time to spend in the spa which we were hoping to before checking out.

We stayed at the Aleaxnader house for my fiance's 30th, and what an amazing stay it was. I had paid to upgrade the room to a junior suite, we stayed in the Goodwood room and it was absolutly stunning, exactly what i wanted for our night away. The grounds were just beautiful and keept immaculate, we enjoyed an afternoon tea which was gorgeous. The spa pools were nice and quiet and so were the grounds, we stayed here on a Monday which i think helped it not being so busy. The treatments we had really chilled us out, the spa was so relaxing. Dinner was so delicious and it was so nice to sit outside on such a beautiful summers evening. The staff were very polite and went above and beyond to make your stay that extra special, i cant remember his name but the head concierge was fantastic. Thank you to everyone who made our stay so amazing that we didnt want to leave.

My husband and I stayed at Alexander house for a friends birthday. The whole hotel was booked out for the celebration. We arrived to a very attentive doorman who took us straight to reception so we could check in. our bag was taken to our room for us and the lovely Ray showed us around the House so we could get our bearings. We were staying in the Glyndbourne room which we can not fault. It was luxurious, spacious and we loved it! There was all the bit you need in a hotel room, hairdryer, kettle (tea, coffee, biscuits) iron/ironing board, safe, range of magazines, Tv, iPod dock with speaker (iphone/iPod 3 4 4s connection) Toiletries in the bathroom and the softest flannels I have ever felt! We were given robes and slippers and were able to use the hotels pool, therapy pool, hot tubs and sauna/steam rooms. We really enjoyed being able to enjoy these and they are well maintained with fresh towels on offer. The party was held in the Shirley suite which was perfect for the party. There was plenty of room to mingle, dance, and easy access to outside seating. The food was a buffet style hot and cold mixture. There was burgers, ribs, sausages, salmon, jacket potatoes, coleslaw, potato salad. All amazing! The bar had the usual range of drinks and there was plenty of access to water. After the party we enjoyed a good night sleep in a huge bed that had been turned down for us and the tea and biscuits had been replenished and new towels put in the bathroom. We awoke fresh and slowly made our way to breakfast which again had a mass of variety. check out was easy and we left feeling chilled and happy. This is a fab place for a party and we look forward to returning again in the future!

"Not the quality expected"
07/22/14 bmd34 Guildford, United Kingdom
My wife and I booked in here when our usual favourite spa destination, The Grove, was fully booked. The building is impressive and the room was decent enough, certainly quiet and comfortable. The massages were perfectly decent but the pool area was too small for the amount of clients and hence it became too noisy. Accepting Hen parties is fine but the relaxation element disappears for other people if they can hear shouting and screaming which goes unchecked. The pool itself is okay except that if you actually want to swim then there is only room for three people maximum due to the design. Some of the water jets were very strong and so different pressure needs were met. The meal was mediocre. My starter was very good but then the steak was average and I felt that I usually do better at home. My wife's salmon was poorly presented and was accompanied by some very sorry looking boiled potatoes. At the price we paid, you certainly expect something decent. We came for my wife's birthday and took a package which involved champagne in the room and chocolate strawberries. This was very nice although it arrived during dinner and so there wasn't much time to make use of it before bed. The stay was pleasant enough but there were too many faults for us to go back again.

Me and my partner stayed on the 19th of July and left on the 20th July. We were greeted in the car park by a very friendly member of staff who handed an umbrella to us due to the rain, and i felt like royalty instantly! We had a tour of the hotel and of the room. What a beautiful place! Our room was amazing, there were absolutely no faults! Breakfast and dinner was exceptional, except the first morning they did forget about our coffee and pastries, but quickly made it up to us! The spa was beautiful and all the spa ladies where so helpful and all very friendly. A lady on reception helped us get a reservation into the fine dining experience which was one in a million and we were very grateful. Milan who worked in the hotel bar was so friendly and chatty and was our favorite member of staff. The rooms were spotless and all the little luxury soaps were lovely! I couldn't recommend this hotel anymore! I would go back tomorrow if i could! :)

It was my son 1st birthday. Helen the Sales Manager was very helpful with booking. On the day Tamas who helped all our guest from main car park to Wakehurst suite instead of going to main entrance. Wakehurst suite looked so beautiful. Weather was great we had our Drink reception outside the Wakehurst suite. Food was amazing, service was superb. Specially Charles, Laura. All my guest really enjoyed.
