The hotel wants to be a sophisticated, high end spa destination. The staff is sincere at trying to be that. But in the execution Alexander House fails. For the price, minor things should not go wrong. But the safe in our room did not work. At the one breakfast we ate at the hotel, the fruit plate we ordered never arrived and other items were unavailable. […] At dinners, the amuse bouche was the same each of 3 nights--a potato leak soup--and the menu never changed. Guests were not warned ahead to book tables for dinner and on weekends locals crowded out the guests from prime dining hours. On one dinner bill the waiter forgot to charge for drinks and had to be reminded. Service at the restaurant was frequently slow despite lots of staff (all of whom seemed very young). At a lower price point and with less up-front pretentiousness these would be minor matters. But at luxury prices and positioning, there is a lack of attention to detail here that suggests it needs experienced managers to teach the eager but under trained staff how to live up to the hotel's billing. A glorious country house hotel. We were looked after perfectly all the time. When we were told the restaurant we wanted was full, they still managed to double check and put us in. Great night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Lovely setting and grand looking hotel with a beautiful spa area. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room itself however (Chelsea)was not of a 5 star standard unfortunately. Although the view was good the windows were quite dirty and painted shut apart from one. The interleading door rattled all night and there was no minibar. I would still recommend […] this hotel though, based purely on the spa (possibly the best one that I have been to). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"We'll be back...."
My partner and i stayed in Alexander House for just one night. The staff were very welcoming and the old part of the hotel was delightful. I would highly recommend the he made beefburger from the bar! The spa is one of the best I have seen with indoor and outdoor fascilities. The only negative from our stay was the price of treatments. These are by […] far the most expensive i have ever seen. Would highly recommend this hotel and we'll certainly visit again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"not really a 5 star service hotel"
As a international traveler staying at countless 5 star resorts, I was disappointed with the level of service you would expect from a 5 star rated hotel in terms of amenities and attention to detail. For those looking for the usual 5 star service, you will not find it at this hotelGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best Hotel I have Ever Stayed At"
WOW!! I booked this hotel for one night for my BFF's birthday treat. We stayed in the Chestnut Suite. The room was large and comfortable. There was a double shower and a free standing bath in the bathroom. The bed was so comfortable. We spent a lot of time walking round the grounds as the weather was lovely during our stay, the hot tub in the pretty […] gardens was lovely and there were plenty of sunbeds available to relax in the sunshine. The indoor pool area was unbelievable, The jacuzzi was MASSIVE! There were several different buttons you could press to operate different water features, we spent ages having fun in there. The sauna and steam room were fantastic too with a really lovely surprise cold shower feature to cool down afterwards. We ate in the brasserie restaurant as we fancied something a little informal for our evening meal. It was everything we could have hoped for and more. My BFF had steak and I had lobster pasta, we shared tender stem broccoli and spinach as sides. It was all amazing! Overall this hotel was out of this world!! The service was impeccable from beginning to end. I can't wait until I return! I LOVE ALEXANDER HOUSE xxx Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Special birthday treat"
Hotel, spa, room, front of house, concierge absolutely superb, just what you expect for £245 per night. Restraunt staff absolutely appalling, no attention to detail like a steak knife for steak, I had to ask, forgetting the order literally five minutes after order, wrong drinks delivered to the table and the food was average in the reflections restraunt, […] not what we expected following the arrival experience. The turn down service was a joke, they literally just pulled the corners of the duvet back, pillows were as we left them after an afternoon nap, and they took our chilled water out of the fridge and left it to warm!? Oh they did empty the bin.., breakfast service was equally underwhelming. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Lovely location, awfull rooms and service"
We arrived and were shown to our room called Devonshire, don't stay in is room. It was a cool evening however it was way too warm as only part of one window would open. The rest of the windows were painted over. With the window open you could smell the extracter fan from the kitchen. The service at the hotel was awfull, it took a long time to find someone […] to talk to about the room where we were offered a junior suite at extra cost which we declined as it was ridiculous for this standard of room. At drinks in the evening and breakfast the next day service was very slow, over an hour for breakfast to arrive. The staff appeared uninterested and overworked. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Secluded luxury resort"
The most notable part was that the service was excellent throughout although we happened to check in at the same time as a large wedding, so the staff were stretched to the limit. Room was nice with a very large and well decorated bathroom. I would probably opt to pay extra for a nicer room (we had chosen the basic room) in order to have some kind of […] view. Now all that we saw were the AC units on the back of the hotel. The spa was a bit run down and they needed to close the pool due to technical issues at one point. It was also disappointing that the sauna and steam rooms are in the changing rooms, and thereby not shared. The outdoor Jacuzzi was very nice and cozy. My wife tried the spa treatments and she was happy with the massage and facial treatment. The restaurant was good albeit a bit expensive by local standard. I can imagine that it would get a bit dull if one stayed more than a couple of nights. All in all the positives far outweighed the negatives of our stay. We liked it and are considering to go back. I recently stayed at this hotel and the spa was the absolute highlight of the stay. The service was excellent. Three night stay, restaurant used on two evening Friday and Sunday, service on Friday exceptional and food of a very high standard. Unfortunatly the Sunday was not of the same standard, table booked from 20:00 shown to our table on time but we were not given a menu until 20:35, starter ordered at 20:50 when staff eventually returned but did not arrive […] on the table until 21:15, (quility of starter very good and no complaints) Main course did not arrive until 21:40 and although the quility and experiance was of a very high standard the food arrived on the table a little chilled but worth the wait. Room service on the whole very good but we where required on one day the phone reception and query the non arrival of staff to replenish consumables and clean the room, this arrranged very promptly. On the whole the experiance was very pleasant with only those small complaints listed above to dampen an experiance that I would recomend to others. Extensive use of the swimming pool ECT that made the whole experiance one to remember. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Pleasing property close to Gatwick excellent spa."
I had read the previous reviews before booking this hotel with hope that I did not end up in the attic room up the tiny staircase, but guess what I did!! However although it did have lower ceilings and was obviously up in the eves it was not unpleasant. The bed was extremely comfortable and as I was only staying one night before flying from Gatwick […] it was adequate. Huge well equipped bathroom. I had a lovely afternoon tea in the pretty garden area, room service for dinner and breakfast in the equally pretty courtyard restaurant all were of a good standard. I had an excellent treatment in the spa which was obviously very popular as it was very busy. This was a most pleasant change from staying at one of the sterile airport hotels. Would definitely stay here if flying from Gatwick again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice but not worth the cost"
Hotel and Spa were nice? Our beef was about two things, firstly the value for money, they charge top end prices for everything, and its not top end. The service in many instances fell short of what you'd expect of an expensive 5 start hotel. No big dramas, just not attentive enough.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Near perfect and close to Gatwick"
The hotel and grounds of this lovely hotel are perfect.Lots of outdoor space to sit and relax. Our stay was great other than the room which, by the way, was the only available room when we checked in. The room was very small even by European standards and there was no air conditioning which made it nearly unbearable. But, that said the hotel is really […] great and the staff accommodating. The spa is fantastic and the hydro pool is perfect especially after jet lag!!! All in all a great experience and even better if we could have a larger room. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

On arrival we were warmly welcomed and check-in was swift. All staff were pleasant and not intrusive when relaxing in the lovely grounds. The room was well maintained and bed very comfortable. Even with a wedding disco a going on it was very quiet. Only slight thing is the lovely shower design means after spending a long time in there the bathroom floor […] was very wet, and the very large bath took a very long time to fill. Lovely hotel in so many ways. Nice spa and treatments... Beautiful bedroom and view. Dinner was slightly disappointing... Food was good but service was slow and they played music better suited to a cruise throughout the meal.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Room Too Small for Comfort"
The room was too small. I actually had to duck my head every time I walked around the bed to get from the bathroom to the TV/desk to avoid hitting it on the slanting wall. Not exactly five-star comfort.Genuine Expedia guest review
Read many reviews about this hotel before booking. The room was an attic room up a musty dark staircase which was very disappointing as we were expecting luxurious. Although the restaurant food was lovely and the service was outstanding, it was overpriced however the overwhelming five star spa redeemed our experience..Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great for a romantic getaway."
Fabulously decorated, olde world hotel with top quality professional staff. We arrived late for a one night stay which was the most disappointing part as could not really make the most of the stay. Dinner in the less formal restaurant was wonderful; would have loved to try the formal dining room but time and money would not permit! We stayed in the […] Windsor room which was an attic room with a quirky yet perfect bedroom/bathroom design; I cannot say enough about this luxurious hotel. Also very close to Gatwick airport for those who'd like to start their holiday one day early. Only suggestion I would make is a lighted sign outside the property..it took us a while to find in the dark winding country roads, even with a sat nav. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Lovely spa is definetely worth to try it. the quality of water was really good! Room was reasonablely good. The food in hotel restuarant was fine except the portion. "4 star Fawlty Towers & dirty duvet."
Beautiful building and spa. Shame that nothing worked in our room! The CD player wasn't working, we had only 3 channels on the TV, window in bathroom would not shut (the manager tried too) bathroom lights would not turn on. Duvet had blood on it. Staff very sweet but incredibly immature and inexperienced. After an overpriced meal in 'relfections' we […] were told by a lad to leave with no explanation (assumed as it was closing?)Very odd, didn't offer to carry our wine to room. Spa lovely but again, staff are sweet to chat to however they told me the towel washing machine was not working, i need to know because??! Wouldn't stay again. "A superb experience"
12/17/14 skd2014 East Grinstead, United Kingdom
I have just returned from festive afternoon tea at The Alexander House Hotel in East Grinstead, West Sussex. What a wonderful afternoon. We were served the most delicious tea, ate every sumptuous sandwich, broke open our warm scones and smothered them with clotted cream and homemade mulled wine jam, and were victorious when faced with so many delectable cakes and pastries. Olivia served us with grace and charm, everything was explained to us and nothing was too much trouble. We enjoyed choosing our tea from the many on offer. I can't wait for a return visit. Please visit this gem of a hotel and take advantage of a truly lovely experience you will not be disappointed.

We stayed here for our first anniversary. The spa is wonderful and the hotel is beautiful. Our room was absolutely gorgeous. We ate in the more expensive restaurant and had the tasting menu which was some of the best food I've had. Staff were very accommodating as we had a young baby with us, but I didn't feel the level of service was quite as you would expect from a hotel of this level. Would highly recommend though.
"Pleasant spa weekend"
We took a chance on this hotel for a wedding anniversary treat, having struggled to find a room anywhere for the actual night itself. We were very pleasantly surprised. The hotel is fun and luxurious, the design and decor is very well done and, although it was plainly packed out (being a Saturday night near Christmas) it managed to accommodate everyone without the place feeling rammed. There was adequate staff to take care of everything, and it seems well run and extremely courteous. Our room was a bit pokey - up in the old attics, with rather low ceilings - but it was cosy and comfortable, and I think we were lucky really to have got a room at all, as I said before. It is pricey, and although the hotel rates itself as 5 star, this ISN'T Claridges. But the room charges are very reasonable for the service and facilities, and I think as accessible spa hotels go, only just over 1 hour's drive from our Shepherd's Bush home, this is good value for money. There are two restaurants but we were too late to get a table in the 'fine dining' restaurant, so I can't comment. The informal Reflections restaurant is fine as long as you are not expecting 5 star food; the service is certainly good, the food not bad. I had a local fish of the day and it certainly was fresh and nicely cooked and presented. The spa is great, although I would have liked more private changing cubicles; there seemed to be only one. The pool area is nicely done with an excellent hydo-therapy pool. We had good treatments too. The spa day offers look like good value. WE would definitely go again.
"Fab overnight stay"
12/12/14 Lauren B London, United Kingdom
I visited here last week with my boyfriend. We had booked an overnight stay with living social so had breakfast, use of facilities and a deluxe room booked in. We had a fab time. We checked in very late around 6pm and headed straight to the spa before dinner. The spa was lovely (albeit slightly chilly when you we not in one of the hot tubs) but had a lovely feel to it and was very quiet - we pretty much had the place to ourselves as we were in there so late. We went for dinner in the evening and the food was amazing! Not cheap but you get what you pay for! Breakfast the next morning we had full English with juices, fruit, toast etc which was all really nice. The room itself was lovely - huge bathroom with a stand alone bath which I loved!! The bed was large and really comfy as well! The hotel staff were very helpful. I did try to book in for the yoga class in the morning but unfortunately the instructor had called in sick which was a bit of a let down as I was really looking forward to it. We went for a little walk round the ground when we checked out which was lovely. I plan to return with my mum to take advantage of the lovely spa in the near future.
"Our stay at the AHH&Utopia Spa"
12/10/14 darren d London, United Kingdom
Upon arrival the approach to the hotel itself was pretty impressive and not what we had expected the scene was very grand displaying a vast veiw of the grounds. There were plenty of car parking spaces and also a heli pad just in case you needed to fly in. when we had entered the reception area it was as it should be... reception.. there were plenty of staff at hand to greet you and we even had an offer to park our car. The conceierge took our bags to our room and another staff member showed us around the hotel , bars , restraunts and spa area which boasts a gym swimming pool , jacuzzi , saunas and steam rooms. We were then shown to our room which was the Dorchester suite which again was of a very high standard equivalent to a small apartment. We then changed into our Robes and slippers which were provided to then make our way to our full body massage appointment which i must say was so proffessional and very relaxing. The gym and swimming pool area were very clean and had what we needed and there was very easy access to locker areas where we had peace of mind that our belongings were secure. We took advantage of the outdoor hot tub in the evening where drinks were brought to us which was a very nice touch. The restraunt was as high a quality as you would expect from a hotel of this standard and the food was gorgeous ...the Sea bass is a recommend. Our room experience was of luxury everything was at hand ... one of my buttons had fallen from my waistcoat and there was a sewing kit to repair this ! the bed was comfortable as expected and the bathroom facilities were of a very high standard. overall we really enjoyed our stay at the AHH& Utopia spa all the staff acknowledeged us at all times which dessrves the extra star in our opinon. We will stay again.

It was our first time staying at Alexander House Hotel, we had heard great reviews and the pictures on the website looked stunning so we thought we would give it a try. We wanted a romantic break, to get away from work and to simply relax! We booked a celebration package which included a nights stay in a classic room with breakfast, £70 towards dinner (we dined at the Reflections restaurant, the food was delicious) a bottle of champagne in our room with chocolate covered strawberries and a 55 minute full body massage each. It was brilliant from start to finish! When arriving, our bags were taken immediately by a member of staff (this is just after parking and before even entering the front of the hotel or lobby) and we were then shown to reception, all the staff were very welcoming and friendly, we had a short tour of the hotel and were told about the history of the main house before being shown to our room which was a nice touch, our room was elegant and classic with a very spacious bathroom. Dinner was tasty and the restaurant had an enjoyable atmosphere, we enjoyed the champagne bar afterwards. the spa facilities were absolutely fantastic, we really enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi. All I can really say is that our stay was perfect. I would definitely recommend for either a girly spa weekend or a romantic getaway!
"A night in a million!!"
A beautiful hotel in picturesque settings with friendly helpful staff. Equalled by the high standard of food offered in both restaurants and the wide selection of spa treatments available. A must stay hotel.
Firstly I would like to start on saying how AMAZING our room was - we had the cedar suite & it was breathtaking - being only 4 weeks old every thing was in brilliant condition & absolutely spotless. The bed was outstanding and I slept like a baby - not to mention the bathroom - the bath was amazing and can easily fit 2 it everything about the suite was 5* I could not fault it in anyway. Secondly I will go on to the spa - where do I start absolutely beautiful and such a lovely time to spend relaxing with friends/partner had a pool and a giant bubble pool plus a hot tub - the only annoying thing was the single sex sauna's. Me and my partner both had a treatment which was a full body massage which left my skin feeling so soft and my muscles no longer aching. Total heaven. Thirdly - the staff! They couldn't do enough for us, they were so helpful and was always around if ever needed help. All very polite and ever so friendly - everyone was treated the same and you could see that so no matter how rich or u rich you were there were no favourites which was just lovely. Lastly the restaurant - we ate in the reflections restaurant, once we arrived to the front to wait to be sat we was seated within less than a minute - the lady who was serving us was very polite and sat us both at our table pulled both chairs out for us and placed our napkins on our laps so all that was brilliant, it was only once she left to get our drinks we noticed an awful smell (BODY ODOUR) I understand restaurants get busy and hot but when your ordering your food and all you can smell it BO it's very off putting and we instantly lost our appetites, another man returned with our drinks who also smelt very badly. Our food was lovely but a tad over priced for what it was but I couldn't fault it in anyway. But since some of the staff smelt unpleasant it did put us off our food - so maybe if you was to go and eat in the restaurant ask to be put near an open window. This would not put me off going back as everything else was outstanding. - I will defiantly be returning and will be keeping an open eye for offers in the new year.
