The hotel wants to be a sophisticated, high end spa destination. The staff is sincere at trying to be that. But in the execution Alexander House fails. For the price, minor things should not go wrong. But the safe in our room did not work. At the one breakfast we ate at the hotel, the fruit plate we ordered never arrived and other items were unavailable. […] At dinners, the amuse bouche was the same each of 3 nights--a potato leak soup--and the menu never changed. Guests were not warned ahead to book tables for dinner and on weekends locals crowded out the guests from prime dining hours. On one dinner bill the waiter forgot to charge for drinks and had to be reminded. Service at the restaurant was frequently slow despite lots of staff (all of whom seemed very young). At a lower price point and with less up-front pretentiousness these would be minor matters. But at luxury prices and positioning, there is a lack of attention to detail here that suggests it needs experienced managers to teach the eager but under trained staff how to live up to the hotel's billing. "We'll be back...."
My partner and i stayed in Alexander House for just one night. The staff were very welcoming and the old part of the hotel was delightful. I would highly recommend the he made beefburger from the bar! The spa is one of the best I have seen with indoor and outdoor fascilities. The only negative from our stay was the price of treatments. These are by […] far the most expensive i have ever seen. Would highly recommend this hotel and we'll certainly visit again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"not really a 5 star service hotel"
As a international traveler staying at countless 5 star resorts, I was disappointed with the level of service you would expect from a 5 star rated hotel in terms of amenities and attention to detail. "Best Hotel I have Ever Stayed At"
WOW!! I booked this hotel for one night for my BFF's birthday treat. We stayed in the Chestnut Suite. The room was large and comfortable. There was a double shower and a free standing bath in the bathroom. The bed was so comfortable. We spent a lot of time walking round the grounds as the weather was lovely during our stay, the hot tub in the pretty […] gardens was lovely and there were plenty of sunbeds available to relax in the sunshine. The indoor pool area was unbelievable, The jacuzzi was MASSIVE! There were several different buttons you could press to operate different water features, we spent ages having fun in there. The sauna and steam room were fantastic too with a really lovely surprise cold shower feature to cool down afterwards. We ate in the brasserie restaurant as we fancied something a little informal for our evening meal. It was everything we could have hoped for and more. My BFF had steak and I had lobster pasta, we shared tender stem broccoli and spinach as sides. It was all amazing! Overall this hotel was out of this world!! The service was impeccable from beginning to end. I can't wait until I return! I LOVE ALEXANDER HOUSE xxx Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Special birthday treat"
Hotel, spa, room, front of house, concierge absolutely superb, just what you expect for £245 per night. Restraunt staff absolutely appalling, no attention to detail like a steak knife for steak, I had to ask, forgetting the order literally five minutes after order, wrong drinks delivered to the table and the food was average in the reflections restraunt, […] not what we expected following the arrival experience. The turn down service was a joke, they literally just pulled the corners of the duvet back, pillows were as we left them after an afternoon nap, and they took our chilled water out of the fridge and left it to warm!? Oh they did empty the bin.., breakfast service was equally underwhelming. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Lovely location, awfull rooms and service"
We arrived and were shown to our room called Devonshire, don't stay in is room. It was a cool evening however it was way too warm as only part of one window would open. The rest of the windows were painted over. With the window open you could smell the extracter fan from the kitchen. The service at the hotel was awfull, it took a long time to find someone […] to talk to about the room where we were offered a junior suite at extra cost which we declined as it was ridiculous for this standard of room. At drinks in the evening and breakfast the next day service was very slow, over an hour for breakfast to arrive. The staff appeared uninterested and overworked. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Secluded luxury resort"
The most notable part was that the service was excellent throughout although we happened to check in at the same time as a large wedding, so the staff were stretched to the limit. Room was nice with a very large and well decorated bathroom. I would probably opt to pay extra for a nicer room (we had chosen the basic room) in order to have some kind of […] view. Now all that we saw were the AC units on the back of the hotel. The spa was a bit run down and they needed to close the pool due to technical issues at one point. It was also disappointing that the sauna and steam rooms are in the changing rooms, and thereby not shared. The outdoor Jacuzzi was very nice and cozy. My wife tried the spa treatments and she was happy with the massage and facial treatment. The restaurant was good albeit a bit expensive by local standard. I can imagine that it would get a bit dull if one stayed more than a couple of nights. All in all the positives far outweighed the negatives of our stay. We liked it and are considering to go back. I recently stayed at this hotel and the spa was the absolute highlight of the stay. The service was excellent. Excellent service, lovely location, good facilitiesGenuine Expedia guest review
Three night stay, restaurant used on two evening Friday and Sunday, service on Friday exceptional and food of a very high standard. Unfortunatly the Sunday was not of the same standard, table booked from 20:00 shown to our table on time but we were not given a menu until 20:35, starter ordered at 20:50 when staff eventually returned but did not arrive […] on the table until 21:15, (quility of starter very good and no complaints) Main course did not arrive until 21:40 and although the quility and experiance was of a very high standard the food arrived on the table a little chilled but worth the wait. Room service on the whole very good but we where required on one day the phone reception and query the non arrival of staff to replenish consumables and clean the room, this arrranged very promptly. On the whole the experiance was very pleasant with only those small complaints listed above to dampen an experiance that I would recomend to others. Extensive use of the swimming pool ECT that made the whole experiance one to remember. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Pleasing property close to Gatwick excellent spa."
I had read the previous reviews before booking this hotel with hope that I did not end up in the attic room up the tiny staircase, but guess what I did!! However although it did have lower ceilings and was obviously up in the eves it was not unpleasant. The bed was extremely comfortable and as I was only staying one night before flying from Gatwick […] it was adequate. Huge well equipped bathroom. I had a lovely afternoon tea in the pretty garden area, room service for dinner and breakfast in the equally pretty courtyard restaurant all were of a good standard. I had an excellent treatment in the spa which was obviously very popular as it was very busy. This was a most pleasant change from staying at one of the sterile airport hotels. Would definitely stay here if flying from Gatwick again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice but not worth the cost"
Hotel and Spa were nice? Our beef was about two things, firstly the value for money, they charge top end prices for everything, and its not top end. The service in many instances fell short of what you'd expect of an expensive 5 start hotel. No big dramas, just not attentive enough.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Near perfect and close to Gatwick"
The hotel and grounds of this lovely hotel are perfect.Lots of outdoor space to sit and relax. Our stay was great other than the room which, by the way, was the only available room when we checked in. The room was very small even by European standards and there was no air conditioning which made it nearly unbearable. But, that said the hotel is really […] great and the staff accommodating. The spa is fantastic and the hydro pool is perfect especially after jet lag!!! All in all a great experience and even better if we could have a larger room. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

On arrival we were warmly welcomed and check-in was swift. All staff were pleasant and not intrusive when relaxing in the lovely grounds. The room was well maintained and bed very comfortable. The room was too small. I actually had to duck my head every time I walked around the bed to get from the bathroom to the TV/desk to avoid hitting it on the slanting wall. Not exactly five-star comfort.Genuine Expedia guest review
Read many reviews about this hotel before booking. The room was an attic room up a musty dark staircase which was very disappointing as we were expecting luxurious. Although the restaurant food was lovely and the service was outstanding, it was overpriced however the overwhelming five star spa redeemed our experience..Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great for a romantic getaway."
Fabulously decorated, olde world hotel with top quality professional staff. We arrived late for a one night stay which was the most disappointing part as could not really make the most of the stay. Dinner in the less formal restaurant was wonderful; would have loved to try the formal dining room but time and money would not permit! We stayed in the […] Windsor room which was an attic room with a quirky yet perfect bedroom/bathroom design; I cannot say enough about this luxurious hotel. Also very close to Gatwick airport for those who'd like to start their holiday one day early. Only suggestion I would make is a lighted sign outside the property..it took us a while to find in the dark winding country roads, even with a sat nav. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"4 star Fawlty Towers & dirty duvet."
Beautiful building and spa. Shame that nothing worked in our room! The CD player wasn't working, we had only 3 channels on the TV, window in bathroom would not shut (the manager tried too) bathroom lights would not turn on. Duvet had blood on it. Staff very sweet but incredibly immature and inexperienced. After an overpriced meal in 'relfections' we […] were told by a lad to leave with no explanation (assumed as it was closing?)Very odd, didn't offer to carry our wine to room. "Good small hotel"
The hotel was well located and easy to find. The staff were friendly and the room had nice decor and was comfortable. Our only problem was that the television did not work on some of the channels. I did report this and asked if it could be fixed by the evening when I returned but nothing had been done about it. I phoned reception 5 times to ask about […] it and there was no answer. My only other slight problem is that there was only 1 vegetarian meal on the menu, which doesn't exactly give you much choice - especially if you don't like risotto! "Amazing stay, staff, facilities and treatments!"
10/21/14 Resh92 London, United Kingdom
Stayed here for a special occasion and genuinely can say the staff, location, facilities and food were top quality. The staff constantly went out of there way to make the stay fabulous, from the smallest things like us wanting to go for a walk around the grounds and them giving us a lantern/umbrella (super cute!) to being able to cater to our needs for the fine dining restaurant. It really was one of the best experiences and we will be sure to come back again soon. Thanks for a great stay-definitely recommend for a perfect getaway.

I really wanted to love this place as we love going to spa hotels but in my opinion it wasn't the best we've been to. The hotel is nice enough but I believe that 5 star is not just about ticking boxes but by being all things to all people. Whilst I appreciate the gesture of someone carrying my bags, if I am only there for a night or two generally my luggage is pretty minimal and I managed to get my bag to the hotel so I think I can manage a few more steps. Also most people will have stayed in a hotel before and therefore I think will manage to work out that the safe and the ironing board are in the wardrobe and if the tea and coffee tray is not visible it will be in one of the cupboards! This might sound flippant but I just hate the embarrassing charade you have to go through. Older people, couples with young children etc. I am sure are very grateful but trying to be overly attentive does not make somewhere 5 star. It's probably just me. The cocktail bar is nice but it would have been nice if there was also a more informal bar perhaps in the lounge by Reflections. My boyfriend wanted a beer and there was nothing on tap. There are so many niche brewers out there these days it would have been nice to have more choice. Offering good beer shouldn't dumb the place down. Reflections itself for dinner was OK, we generally enjoyed what we had but I think it's over priced. They already have one expensive restaurant and therefore something more reasonable would give people more options. We spoke to some people who were getting taxi's elsewhere to get variety and value for money during their stay. They are also charging £4.50 for a double espresso but have no idea how to make one. This is East Grinstead not the West End the price is ridiculous. A restaurant offering really good gastro pub food would work well with the character of the hotel. Or maybe it's not the menu as such but the setting. Going to the same room as breakfast and where you sit in your robes at lunchtime I think makes me begrudge paying over the odds for a meal in the evening. AGs was excellent and much better value than Reflections. The staff and service in this restaurant are the only reasons I would think about returning for. Our room was nice, had an awful view and the occupancy was really low whilst we were there so I am not sure why they didn't offer something with a better view just to help people leave with a better impression. The spa is ok. To be honest had I realised before I booked it that the saunas and steam rooms were split male and female I probably wouldn't have made the booking. If it was purely a health spa then I would understand it but it's not, it's a hotel spa. If you are a same sex couple or same sex friends then it's fine but I went away with my boyfriend to spend time with him not to keep nipping off to the female changing rooms on my own. Having to listen to hair dryers being used whilst sat in the sauna is not particularly relaxing!! The pool and hydrotherapy pool are nice the area is not as big as the website tries to suggest though. There was plenty of seating available due to the low occupancy and the fact that those using it as a day spa were busy having treatments. My boyfriend had a treatment and really liked it. The new Cedar Suites look ok from the outside and I am sure are nice on the inside but they are basically situated in the middle of the car park! Despite the fact they face a few trees they will still have cars driving past and you can hear the road noise plus if it's wet you will need a brolly to get to the restaurants, spa and cocktail bar! When I booked this hotel I toyed with the idea of going on an overseas city break or a spa hotel in this country. Even though we got the hotel at a reasonable price the total cost ended up being approx £850 for two. Was it worth it? No, not in my opinion. It's not 5 star in the true sense of the word, it's not one of the better spas and the restaurant prices are over priced. I have paid similar in the past but received much better value for money.
"2nd Visit Birthday treat, Priceless"
10/15/14 bazza173 Brighton
2nd Visit to the Alexander House and Spa, It was a Birthday treat from my Partner and again it did not dissapoint at all, On arrival we both got a lovely warm greeting from the reception staff and Concierge Boys, We booked a Junior suite, and we got up graded to the Traditional suite, the Huntingdon suite, and it was stunning, a Beautiful 3 room suite, with stunning decor, a wonderful lounge, a massive bedroom with a huge King bed which was so so comfortable and the best sleep ever, a Beautiful Massive bathroom with a free standing bath for 2, with seperate shower and a seperate dressing area, the decor was lovely with great attention to detail, you had everything you needed within this beautiful suite, with stunning views, and very quiet, the hotel has added the new Ceder Suites and on arrival you would think that they were there for years as they are so beautifully set within the gardens and to a high finish, we booked spa treatments and both had a back massage each, and it was so relaxing in every way, we spent the day using the superb facilities and it was superb and very busy, there is nothing you cannot get at the Alexander, the spa rooms are amazing with superb treatments on offer, we sat in the outdoor spa drinking wonderful white wine, and we booked a table at Ajs Fine dining restaurant at 8.30, this is fine dining at its very best, its an intimate restaurant which I loved, our starters were first rate, I had Lobster and my partner had crad with Mackeral, Yum Yum, and they both looked like art on a plate, this followed by the Beef wellington to share, and it was presented to us on a trolly and cut and served at the table, the meal was outstanding, and the red wine juis was Amazing, this was with honey glazed Veg and a delicious mash potato, after this we picked our desserts, I had the Chocolate tree selection which was 3 different chocolate with a yummy sorbet, my partner had the Toffee Souffle with a hot chocolate suce and sorbet on the side, all of these dishes were simply stunning and served with the highest of standards, Yolanda our serves was so lovely in everyway, we also had there Homemade bread which was made with Stilton and fruit with a dreamy mouse butter, all washed down with a very dreamy Savignon Blanc white wine, and the chefs made me small chocolate treats with Happy Birthday written in Chocolate, In the morning we had our delicious and well cooked Breakfast and our room concierge ask us both if we would like a complimentry glass of champagne with Breakfast, which we declined as I was driving, but again what a wonderful thought, we both love coming to this stunning hotel as you do not get treated like a guest you get treated like Royality, as the attention to every detail is so thought out in every way, Truly wonderful in everyway, we will be back, thank you all so very very much, Best Birthday treat ever.

We stayed here for sunday night just gone and had a lovely stay the spa is of good quality and the treatments are very good - try and book these in advance so you can avoid them booking you in for your massage at 10am just after breakfast which isn't ideal our room (named Spruce) had Air conditioning and was very well appointed albeit a bit small - the bed was very comfortable the staff are friendly and the porters are very efficient we ate in the Reflections restaurant for dinner - fillet steak, excellent and then again Reflections for breakfast - my tip is that you order your eggs before you hit the buffet, they only do scrambled eggs at the buffet.... have stayed in many spa hotels and this is definitely up there with the best of them
What an amazing Hotel & spa. From the moment my friend and I arrived we were treated like royalty, our bags and coats carried for us, car parked and a tour of the hotel. Room was spacious with lovely view of the garden, only niggle was that the room was very warm and we couldn't work out how to adjust the heat. Ate in Reflections Restaurant the service was good as well as the food. Spent the day in the spa being pampered - very much worth it, again only niggle is we weren't given like the others a tour of the facilities so as we departed found some rooms we'd missed. Amazing weekend in a beautiful setting, will come again.
"Relaxing weekend at a beautiful hotel"
10/12/14 bensil Amsterdam, The Netherlands
For our weekend in the UK we chose the Alexander House Hotel as a change from our usual selection. We read great reviews on TA and our minds were made up! We booked the Master Garden suite and certainly were not disappointed. This is a new block of beautifully finished rooms adjacent to the hotel. Our room was a duplex with a lovely sitting room down stairs and an equally relaxing bedroom on the first floor. Being a new facility we were lucky to be the first people to book into this room and sample the luxury built into the suite The staff at the hotel were superb, exactly as expected with a 5 star establishment and they certainly made us feel welcome. I have made separate reports re the restaurants. However the bar area was comfortable and relaxing with a great selection of whiskey a and some very nice cocktails. Some minor downsides should be mentioned. The new block of suites are located away from the main building and amenities. This means a walk in the rain and cold if you want to use the spa or have a meal. There needs to be a covered walkway from these very expensive rooms. The view from our room was very limited and there was a steady flow of traffic right past the windows in the early evening. The lighting in the suite is probably the most comprehensive and complicated I have ever come across. There are switches everywhere and it certainly took the full 2 days of our stay to start understanding how it operates. At night there are emergency lights that have an extremely bright green light. For me I found this quite distracting as I a light sleeper and like a very dark bedroom. These were minor points and really did not detract from the overall experience. We will definitely be back and would certainly recommend the hotel and spa. Thank you to all the staff who made the stay perfect.

My friend and I booked a special over night stay at Alexander House by way of a celebration. The hotel itself is beautiful and the welcome was very warm. We were given a double room even though we'd booked a twin, there was a 30 minute wait while they moved us. The new room wasn't as luxurious as the first but it was stylish and the beds were super comfy! We had booked two spa treatments each which were pretty expensive (£50 for a pedicure & £90 for a facial) once we were in the spa we were disappointed. There were towels everywhere and it was pretty crowded, we were surprised by how small the pool was compared to the publicity shots, guessing that's the benefit of a fish eye lense. Perhaps the most important thing was the noise, the water jets and people's voices seemed excessively loud. It was a very hot day so we didnt really want to be inside so we explored the gardens which were very stylish with comfy loungers. There was no outdoor pool so we used the hot tub, which I'm sure would have been wonderful on a chilly day, but was too hot for summer. Generally the treatments were OK, but certainly not worth the price. However, my pedicure was really poor. I was given a dining chair to sit on and a washing up bowl of soapy water to put my feet in! There were proper massage chairs with foot spas and when I asked why I wasn't seated at one of these chairs (all were empty ) I was told that its costs £10 extra to use the chairs. To save myself the embarrassment and discomfort of sitting in a dining chair in the middle of an empty salon I paid the extra. The beautician was very friendly and polite, but didnt pick up on my hint (reading a magazine) that I didn't want to talk and chatted away. It felt like I was at work, having to make polite conversation. I also had a spot light shining in my eyes the whole time. My toes looked fine, but it wasn't a thorough pedicure, no hot wax, one coat of colour etc. I actually couldnt wait for it to be over. £60 poorly spent. neither of us left the spa feeling relaxed or pampered, which was the whole point of our stay. We really enjoyed our meal and breakfast the next morning, food and staff were excellent. The hotel is beautiful, but the spa is small, untidy and somewhat unprofessional. We spent just under £300 each for the one night which wasnt great and we wouldn't return, it just didnt fulfil the relaxation brief.

We visited Alexander Hotel and Spa with a great deal from Secret Escapes. I wasn't expecting it to be as wonderful as it was. We were lucky enough to dine at both Reflections on the first nights and AG's on the second. The food and service was amazing, we were pleased to know so much of their meat and vegetables were from local farms. We were aloud to sit on our own in front of the fire on Monday night from after dinner until whenever we wanted to leave in the lounge. We made use of the complimentary wellies and umbrellas and had a long walk around the beautiful surrounding countryside (we would of used the mountain bikes if it hadn't been raining). Our room was spotless with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in and a free standing bath. I even adored the Temple Spa products in our room. The Spa was very nice and we were pleased to find it very quiet on the Monday. I am reviewing so I will say the negatives. There was one lady who seemed to be running the breakfast both days, she made everything over complicated and hectic. She forgot our drinks on both mornings and told other staff members what to do half way through taking us to the table, taking our order or putting my napkin on my lap. I should say that every other member of staff we encounter went above and beyond with a huge smile. The only other negative is that I would take allot of the artwork off the walls but thats just personal taste. We found it slightly dated.
"Lovely Hotel , Excellent food, Disappointing Spa"
10/05/14 HotLass Brighton, United Kingdom
My friend and I booked a night away for a relaxing break with some spa treatmetns to spoil ourselves . The staff were all very friendly and helpful , and extremly honest . (my friend left her diamond necklace in her robe and was devasted as she couldnt find it , and housekeeping had handed it in to reception ). The room was lovely , fresh and clean .We had a treatment each on saturday with hot rocks which was very nice. We used all the spa facilities which were average. We ate in the reflections resturant and the food was amazing , staff were again friendly and helpful . Breakfast was also lovely and the staff again were friendly and welcoming . It was lovely to come back to the room later in the evening and the beds were turned down and the blinds shut .On the sunday morning I had a disappointing back , neck and shoulders massage at £55 for 25minutes , which is quite expensive, I asked the girl if she could concentrat on my neck and shoulders and not so much on my back , she didnt touch my neck once !! , having been on a massage course last year , and had treatments all over the world , I was suprised when she rubbed up and down my back repeatedly ( 24 times) !! , After the massage i had a lovely scrub which was very nice.
