Although great people working at this Hotel, it requires multimillion dollar update and rehabilitation! be aware if there is function at the hotel with music, you will hear it in your room!

A beautiful hotel, well located in Buxton. The room was wonderful- very large, including a HUGE bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. I highly recommend it if you are spending time in the Peak District.

The hotel is ideally situated in the centre of Buxton. The breakfasts are very good. The room was clean, but not very big, it had a seperate toilet but the handbasin was across the way in the bathroom. i felt there should have been a handbasin in the room with the toilet. . They charge you for car parking which I think is wrong. Fair enough, they don't […] want people just parking in the hotel but they should issue you with a pre paid car parking ticket if you are staying at the hotel. Perfect hotel for a visit to the theatre, and central to Buxton's many charms. There is a good choice of nearby restaurants as well as restaurant and bar in the hotel. The room was small but clean and tidy with a comfortable bed and towels shaped into elephants !. Not much milk with the tea/coffee making facilities but we bought a bottle from a local […] shop. Overall, a very satisfactory visit considering it was so short. We shall go to the hotel again and if we have more time will use the gym facilities which were mentioned but we did not see. Read more

If you want flashing lights, ringing bells and modern technology, stay somewhere else. For me and my wife this is a beautiful well preserved building throughout, kept as near to original as possible, we loved it. An impressive location was the only good thing about the hotel. My wife and I stayed one night on 2nd Feb 2013. The room was freezing and the only method of heating was a towel rail, the radiator never came on all day. The room was small and oddly laid out with the bed right by the door opening straight out to the main hallway. You could hear everyone […] walk past, not at all private or comfortable. The bed position meant only one of you could comfortably see the tv . on the evening we tried to call room service twice without an answer, we had to book our own taxi to get out for some food and when we were waiting in the bar we had a g&t each which cost £19.84. At breakfast the plates were cold, half the food had run out and the staff were to busy to help. When we went to leave, we had prepaid so went to leave the key cards and go, but were rudely stopped at the door without any explanation, had to queue 20 mins to be told there was a £4.50 parking fee to pay so we could exit. We paid, but the barrier was just open so it felt like we were royally conned! Lots of work needed to bring this hotel up to a reasonabke standard! Read more

I think that as this is an old hotel you should expect a few qwerks and although it is not perfect like you would expect from a modern hotel- it's just fine. People complain too much! The hotel has an easy going and comfortable environment, the breakfast was absolutely fantastic, great quality food.

The hotel is a little 'tired'. The carpets and curtains have seen better days. The welcome was good, and the room was nicely warm on a winter weekend. Two biggest problems were that the breakfast was not really hot enough on either day, and there is an overnight parking charge for guests. Neither of these are really good enough for a 4* hotel.

Staff welcoming on arrival. Main disappointment was twofold. Breakfast on Saturday was poor, most of buffet selection had run out and no staff to replenish. Coffee/tea self service into mugs. Main bar and dining room unavailable to guests on Friday evening due to a private party and alternative bar small and unsuitable for eating.

Double rather than King size bed, no trouser press and shower inadequate, despite being reported on three occasions (given another room on 3rd night!!). Considering the tarrif we regard this hotel as poor value for money.

A lovely hotel, perfect location. We opted for a budget price room as we were only in town for one night, so we got a room with a view of walls and a rooftop, but that's to be expected for the price. Breakfast was very good and staff very helpful. Recommended.

The hotel looks very grand from outside and the staff were really nice and welcoming and helpful. However, the hotel itself needs renovating and modernising. We were also given the room on the top floor and in the corner meaning it was smaller than all the others. Out of 330+ rooms!

Absolutely Ideal location, good food and very helpful staff. The public rooms are attractive and imposing but the upper floors are generally very much in need of a facelift. Bed was comfortable but the bathroom although clean, needed upgrading. It has huge potential if investment is forthcoming because of its position and size.

The room was noisy with doors banging and deliveries early in the morning. There is only 1 lift which is rather tempremental, and you get charged an extra £4.50 per night just for using the car park. Apart from that though, the rooms were comfortable, with a nice bed and TV, and free wifi and the breakfasts were good.

The room we were allocated on arrival was extremely disappointing. It was dark,old fashioned and there was an extremely pungent odour pervading the area outside and within the room. We were moved to a more recently decorated room. The bathroom was large but the sanitary ware was extremely old and the bath took a very long time to fill accompanied by […] the discordant sounds of the creaky plumbing. We were really impressed with the hotel itself, the service, the classic feel to the hotel, the excellent breakfasts. Within easy walking distance for any of the nearby tourist spots, and situated a stones throw from the train station, so any newcomers to Buxton don't have far to wander around to find the hotel.

stayed here two nights and had a very pleasant stay. I would agree with other comments that some areas are in need of updating, particularly the bathroom - it was massive but a bit bare and cold, shower and bath a bit old and stained - but not unclean as such. The room itself was lovely, but old furniture - a bit dusty and creaky! No air con so it was […] quite warm one night. The changing room showers for the pool could also do with refurbishment, the pool itself fine but quite small so was a bit crowded at times. Not that I have stayed in any other accommodation in Buxton but I got the impression that The Palace was one of the nicer places to stay, some of the B&Bs didn't look too appealing! On the whole ,for our needs it was absolutely fine - great location, right next to train station and very near to town and restaurants. The hotel building is very grand and historic so I can see that refurbishing would be a massive project, the staff do a good job with what must be a difficult place to run and clean! Staff were very friendly on reception. Really good breakfast, but glad to have purchased special offer with breakfast included as it would have been £12.95 - which would have put me off but it was very nice and plenty of choice. Meals were quite pricey at the hotel so we found some nice places in the town. Think standard rooms vary in quality so might be worth upgrading if possible. Read more

Not a bad hotel, pretty standard British. I.e. old, a bit tatty but generally the staff helping to make the experience satisfactory. The window of our room rattled with the wind all night, the heating was not working and the shower room was too small for comfort. Our car decided to breakdown in the hotel car park and reception were helpful and understanding.
