Great staff and service. Excellent food I'll Be BackGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Over all our stay at the reef was an enjoyable one. The grounds on the resort are well maintained and very lovely. The rooms are older but clean and simple. the staff was friendly, but weren't very informed about what was going on around the resort. The food was good at all three restaurants.the pools are nice and stay open later than other resorts […] we have visted.I would recommend this resort if your looking for a reasonable priced vacation. "Nice View, but not worth the stay"
When we first arrived at the room we proceeded to unpack & the room was extremely hot. I turned down the AC, but to my surprise the fan was broken. I immediately went to the front desk & advised about the problem. They told me I had not flipped 1 of switches correctly. I told them that was not the case & a maintenance man was sent to our room. The fan […] finally started to work, but it did not have enough power to generate a nice breeze. We left for several hours & upon our arrival I noticed the room was not cold. I turned down the AC to the lowest setting & after taking a cold shower we started to get ready for bed. Upon lifting the covers from the bed, we discovered several pieces of hair from various parts of the human body on the sheets. By that time it was already too late to call housekeeping, considering that this hotel does not even have room service. The next day I went to the front desk & I was assured the problem would be fixed. Several hours later we returned to our room & housekeeping had been there, however there were still 2 pieces of someone’s hair on the sheets. The new pillow cases also had orange stains. I went back to the front desk a 2nd time with pictures & I explained my problem to another person. I was assured the problem would be taken care of. After enjoying our time at the beach we went back to the room & the dirty sheets were still there. I went to the front desk for a 3rd time, talked to a manager & the sheets were finally changed to our satisfaction Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel but a few dislikes"
Hotel was nice and staff was wonderful! Food was excellent and beach was beautiful. Close to 5th street so lots to do! Dislikes: no beer in mini ridge in room (not that big of a deal) no waiters on the beach so prepare to walk to bar each time, no shuttle to and from airport so you have to pay a taxi which is not cheap. The final complaint which was […] the worst to me and most annoying (all the other stuff I could deal with) is the constant up selling! Daily phone calls trying to get you to come to a breakfast to look at their vacation rooms, they hound you as soon as you get there after you having been traveling all day and just want to go unwind. We just didn't expect that at our hotel but other than those few things everything was great and my 5 year old had a blast! It is a good hotel for the price but beware of all the extras but I guess that's why they are cheaper. Overall a great visit:) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

My wife and I stayed for one week and had a wonderful time. The food was good but could use more variety. staff was friendly and helpful. We liked that it wasn't a big complex, easy to get around. "Nice hotel but feel ripped off"
I paid all inclusive and didn't get a wet bar refill, I got a coffee maker and was never brought coffee. The reef hotel blamed Expedia. I paid the high price for nothing. My flight home was diverted took six hours instead of four. I think I need some sort of refund or at least half because I only got half the amenities.. they have me a coffee pot with […] no coffee all five days, no iron, rooms musty smelling. I was there. They just gave me the run around and blamed Expedia. I ask the concierge he blamed Expedia. Who do I send my complaint asking for some sort of credit or partial refund. They swear its your fault. Because I booked through you and nut them. Business relations between the two companies need work. Alot of it.Totally unacceptable. Will not use Expedia again nor plan a trip through them. "Give the hotel staff a raise!"
The Reef is a medium size hotel that is not too big like the rest of the hotels nearby. My boyfriend, son, and I vacationed at the Reef from July 25-July 29, 2014. The positive aspects of our hotel stay at the Reef: 1. Great staff (Mario, Willy, Daniel, Karina and Yessina), everyone was nice and kind. The service was great and they deserve a raise! […] Tipping is very appreciated by the hotel staff so be generous, 2. Good food, we paid for the superior upgrade but only ate at the Mexican Buffet once. We mainly ate at the main buffet dining room most of the times. The Italian restaurant was okay but the service was slow, and 3. Our room was average and enough for 3. Overall with a flat screen TV that we hardly used. Our room was in building 12 with a view of the hotel next door. Not what we wanted The negative aspects of our experience at the Reef: 1. Our room, we arrived at 9:00AM at the hotel due to an overnight flight. We were told my the hotel staff that as soon as a room becomes available around 12:30PM to 1:00PM that we will be notified. In the meantime, we were at the pool area waiting for hours for a room. We checked in twice with the hotel staff and did not get a room until 3:45PM, 2. Timeshare/vacation pitch, I have sat through one awful one in Mexico years ago (suckered into it). The one at the Reef was not that bad of a deal and sounds reasonable to be fair but I did not want to attend a sales pitch on my vacation. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Family vacation"
I take my kids to Mexico every year and we decided to try this resort rather than Cancun. My kids are age 14 and 16. We had an excellent time. Some of the rooms have been totally updated and are amazing but some are older and a bit dated. However, we stayed in one of the older rooms and we found it perfectly fine. The overall resort is amazing. Easy, […] walk up beaches with calm ocean water. Much unlike the hard waves you find in Cancun. No rocks, just soft sandy beaches. The staff was amazing. Always helpful, smiling and seemed to go out of their way to smile and make us feel welcomed. Lots of planned activities - sand volleyball, water aerobics, pool games and more. Nightly shows were provided, however we did not attend. The food was good. My kids, who are picky eaters, always were able to find something to eat. The Italian restaurant had great good but the men in our group were asked to return to their rooms and put on closed toe shoes. We usually just ate the buffet which always offered a wide array of food - beef, chicken, pork and pasta at every meal. It is not gourmet but hey, it was still really good. The swim up bar in the pool always had cold beer and beachy type drinks. There is another bar but in order to access you have to have a special bracelet which you pay extra for. This allows you access to the top shelf alcohol and access to the Mexican restaurant, Overall, an excellent trip. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We have come to the Reef at Playacar for several years. We love everything about it. The food. The people...staff and guests. The dreamiest beach ever. Enjoyed the cultural diversity at this resort. Mostly Spanish spoken, with many guests from Latin America: It gave an authentic flavor to the place. Reef is economical and well-kept. The food was good and plentiful. (Italian restaurant not good). Staff probably a little overworked, but friendly. Some staff, like Willy and Carlos, sincerely nice people […] with excellent language skills. It was our first all-inclusive, so not sure what others might expect. "Worst Hotel In Playa Del Carmen"
Dirty rooms and size of a shoe box. Never served any seafood. No sodas or beers in the room unless you pay for it. The bath towels are very old and rough! They keep hounding you to attend their sales pitch for time shares. Don't go!!!!Genuine Expedia guest review
Comfortable resort, met expectations overall. Check in/check out could be a bit more streamlined, the front desk staff appeared to be bit overwhelmed if there were several guests waiting. All the staff were very friendly and courteous. Standard room was very ordinary, nothing exciting, served its purpose. Decent food selection at ChulaVista (buffet) […] and Botticelli Italian restaurant. Quality of the snack bar selections could be improved. Drinks were decent with generic brands (surcharge for premium brands). Ample sized pool(s), they were not overcrowded, however you needed to secure a spot/pool chair before 11 a.m. Beautiful beach, no rocks, coral etc. Did not participate in any activities but there were quite a few things going on each day. The Tropical show in the theater was good, the comedy show was not :( Also the ambiance of the theater was very ordinary. Again, overall, a pleasant experience. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"You get what you pay for"
Overall, it was not a bad hotel. The rooms were sparsely decorated, but I felt they were clean. There are a lot of chairs on the beach, but you have to get there early to get a spot. The water is beautiful and the sand is white. The beach is kept very clean. The pools are also clean and warm. The buffet food was a little above average, but there was […] a decent variety. The property does show signs of age, but its not too bad. We are not picky about our drinks, and we were completely satisfied by all the bars. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU BOOK!!!"
If you have never been to an all inclusive resort you may find this one OK. If you have been to other resorts I am confident that you will NOT. This resort is small which is nice and we traveled with our 20 year old son and his friend which allowed us to meet many wonderful people. Past that the resort did not live up to any other all inclusive we have […] stayed at before. The food is poor at best and we are simple folks that don't need a lot and after speaking with many people at the resort everyone had the same feeling on the food. The hours for the bars are set up horribly wrong, the pool bar which has a swim up side and a walk up has ONE overworked bartender and long waits, the snack bar never had the items listed as offered, typically just hamburgers and hot dogs and again ONE cook and long waits. After 6 pm you can only find ONE bar open for the rest of the night and no food at that bar and a decent walk to get some chips or snacks. At the snack bar there is a soda machine with no cups to use. One must go get a cup at a bar and come back. If you want to get in the hot tub you must pay the premium wrist band. The beach is amazing but there are many other resorts close by with the same beach. We were only approached twice to participate in any games etc and never saw the listed activities for the day take place? Beach Olympics were posted every day and never happened. At one bar you have to ask for a cookie located behind glass... NO WAY IS THIS ALL INCLUSIVE! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

It was an amazing experience will definitely stay again! The food was good and they had a lot of variety. Great place to stay for the money,we stayed from 6/24-7/2/14 staff was friendly, food was good, accommodations were nice.We don't stay at 5 star resorts.Best place for a GREAT BEACH !!!! bikes, kayaks, snorkel gear all free...We would defiantly be back maybe not same time-frame (HOT,HUMID) staff recommended NOV-FEB for great weather.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice beach and pretty grounds. Needs food variety."
We stayed there during the last 2 weeks of June. Weather was excellent. Not too humid and not too hot as there was constant breeze on the beach. We loved the beach for the exception of constant water sports in front of the swimming area - Jet-sky, flyboard, boats picking up people created constant waves and spoiled the air with exhaust and gas smell. […] When there were no water sports, it was lovely. Food was okay, however, we were getting tired of it as there was the same thing every day for dinner. Breakfast was good, you can pick and choose different things. Lunch was okay too, but dinner was the same daily and their fish wasn't cook well. And since I don't eat meat much, I had to stick to salads and chicken:) However, pasta cooked in front of you was good. But how much pasta can you eat? Their restaurants seemed both good. The fist time we went to Italian, we liked it. It was at no charge and we enjoyed the food. However, the 2nd time we went, the meals weren't as good and we had to wait too long to get our food. I don't know what it depends on, the chef? Same restaurant, same dishes but tasted differently. Third time we were really disappointed as we waited extremely long and didn't even have desert as we ran out of patience. The food was good at the Mexican restaurant both times we went, but there is a charge of $6.00/person if you don't have special bracelet and we had to wait soooo long to get food. So don't go hungry there. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Front desk people very rude. First night we got there they were over booked and tried to stick us three nights across the street... Not in a hotel on the beach and a small swimming pool. Eventually after two hours of arguing they found us rooms. They were not accommodating at all. If you upgrade your bracelets be prepared for them to be out of the good […] alcohol early in the day. "The worst hotel ever! Do not go there!"
It was just awful from the beginning! After a 7 hour flight to Cancun from a cold climate...(we were wearing jeans and snickers...our bet) and a 45 minutes drive to the hotel, with a baby... we finally arrived to The Reef! They welcomed us with a glass of champagne! Wooho right? After checking-in, I sales guy try to explain to us how the "all-inclusive" […] that is not "all inclusive" worked. He starts reading us the map.. lol.. really? I know how to read a map of a hotel... all he wanted to do is to try to send us with another sales guy the next day to convince us to buy a "timeshare"!!!!!! Wow... tired, hot, baby with full diaper... ready to eat and get in the pool and this guy is just trying to sell us stuff... After we changed we went to try to get food and a drink and all restaurants and bars were closed!!! They have hours... in a "all-inclusive" hotel! We found a food bar though with food that tasted like cardboard... drinks? we had to go to the lobby..OMG!!! are you kidding me???? Staff? some are nice, some are really rude. They seam tired of tourists, tired of their job.. I don't know but not the nicest people. ... at the end, they had construction on the floor above us, they said it was going to be for a few hours...more like all day and the next one.... The Reef Playacar was a lovely all-inclusive situated on the beach and close proximity to Fifth Avenue and the ferry to Cozumel. "Fantastic affordable resort"
I was there last week with a friend and we had an amazing time! I would definitely recommend this resort to others. They greeted us with glasses of champagne upon arrival and were very friendly and helpful all around. There was a bit of trying to sell us things which was somewhat annoying after a while but they leave you alone when you say no. It seemed […] to have a sort of cruise ship on land vibe since it was a very small resort and we kept seeing the same people all week. The location was fabulous as it was a short walk into town. As others mentioned the Italian restaurant was fabulous. I enjoyed the buffet, always fresh food available. The shows left something to be desired, but were entertaining nonetheless. We agreed to do the time share sales pitch (even though the INSIST it is not a time share) and I was definitely irritated by the end of it. They told us 90 minutes and had us there over 2 hours. Since we spent a week there it wasn't the end of the world but as soon as we said no they got a little aggressive and nasty. This didn't surprise me though as it is their job to sell to us. In the end we enjoyed our discounted massages on the beach and it was well worth it! You can't beat the views, absolutely gorgeous beach front with beautiful pools and a swim up bar. My only real complaint comes from our last day. One of the local men working at the Marina (their water sports area) asked me (a young female) an incredibly offensive and vulgar question. Otherwise great! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"This place is legit"
We looked at literately every all inclusive in Playa, and decided to go with this one for multiple reasons. Its on the beach, many are deceiving and are not actually on the beach. The food is actually good, the buffet is decent with a good number of variation every day, but the best part is the Italian and Mexican restaurants that are included for free […] if you upgrade for like 10$ extra a night (highly recommended lowest level of upgrade, the others are waist of money IMO). To be clear i have a deadly allergy to sea food and had no issues at any of the eateries over 6 days, which highlights their kitchen cleanness and attention by staff. Its a medium sized place, with lots of easy access to chairs on the beach or pool area no need to wake up at 5am to get a chair, we commonly would find ours around noon with no problem. Its a 5-10 min walk along the beach into town and the beach in front of the Playacar hotels is much nicer than the beach closer to Playa. Its also a 5 min walk to where the hotels end and there is natural beach. The staff here is awesome! if you tip the bartenders and waiters like a single dollar a meal and or a maybe twice a day at the bar you can get the higher quality booz without paying 15$ a day for the super upgrade bracelet and they staff will love you 10x more, best advice i got on the first day there. Id buy excursions in town over the hotel place as we did 1 each way and over payed through the hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Had a great time despite a lot of rain.....hotel grounds are nice, but rooms are only ok. The majority of the staff was very good to excellent. We arrived off season. Beautiful facilities. The beach was unparalleled. I have stayed at a pricier place in Riviera Maya but this time I was looking for something a little less expensive but retaining the things I really care about at a resort: the look and feel of the place; friendliness of staff, clean pools, and a nice beach. I wasn't looking for […] fancy rooms, but clean rooms. I found everything I wanted and more at the Reef. The waiters at the restaurants, the activity directors, the spa workers, and the guys sweeping the leaves off the sidewalks were not only friendly, but in many instances, they went out of their way to make our stay special. They really got to know us and actual friendships were built between us and the staff. That made the biggest difference in how we perceived our stay. We also greatly enjoyed tea/coffee everyday at 4:00 served in a the beautiful outdoor lounge in the jungle by the warmest baristas. Free bicycles were available to ride into town. The food was better than expected for an all-inclusive. The beach was clean and spectacular. However, no one will come by on the beach to take your drink order, and at first, it seemed that the bartenders were being put out by serving us, but they loosened up a little the longer we were there. There was nightly entertainment which was indeed, entertaining. The snack bar is pretty much open whenever the main buffet or other restaurants are closed, so finding food or drink is never a problem. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Our second time at this resort"
We were so happy to see that after four years, the resort was as beautiful as we remembered. The staff are wonderful, helpful and always pleasant. The gardens are well maintained and gorgeous. The activities are fun, especially the water aerobics in the pool each day, followed by the dance lessons. Starting each day with coffee by the pool, looking […] out at the white sands and turquoise waters was our favorite. The food in the buffet was always fresh and always appealing to the eye and the taste buds. We went to the Italian for dinner 3 of our 7 nights and were pleased each time. The menu does change, but each offering was great. We did not get to the Mexican restaurant, but it did look good. We were not at all disappointed with our stay this time or last time and we will go back again. Great place for families too, we watched the children participate in many activities within the Kids Club. I would absolutely recommend this resort to anyone heading to Playa.
