"Beautiful beach but limited food selections"
All inclusive doesn't mean all inclusive here. They want to charge you extra for a lockbox, wifi, and premium drinks. There were only 2 free restaurants. One you had to pay $6 a person.Genuine Expedia guest review

Wonderful experience! The beach and location are great. The area is the best and feels very safe and convenient.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Worst Hotel In Playa Del Carmen"
Dirty rooms and size of a shoe box. Never served any seafood. No sodas or beers in the room unless you pay for it. The bath towels are very old and rough! They keep hounding you to attend their sales pitch for time shares. Don't go!!!!Genuine Expedia guest review
Comfortable resort, met expectations overall. Check in/check out could be a bit more streamlined, the front desk staff appeared to be bit overwhelmed if there were several guests waiting. All the staff were very friendly and courteous. Standard room was very ordinary, nothing exciting, served its purpose. Decent food selection at ChulaVista (buffet) […] and Botticelli Italian restaurant. Quality of the snack bar selections could be improved. Drinks were decent with generic brands (surcharge for premium brands). Ample sized pool(s), they were not overcrowded, however you needed to secure a spot/pool chair before 11 a.m. Beautiful beach, no rocks, coral etc. Did not participate in any activities but there were quite a few things going on each day. The Tropical show in the theater was good, the comedy show was not :( Also the ambiance of the theater was very ordinary. Again, overall, a pleasant experience. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"You get what you pay for"
Overall, it was not a bad hotel. The rooms were sparsely decorated, but I felt they were clean. There are a lot of chairs on the beach, but you have to get there early to get a spot. The water is beautiful and the sand is white. The beach is kept very clean. The pools are also clean and warm. The buffet food was a little above average, but there was […] a decent variety. The property does show signs of age, but its not too bad. We are not picky about our drinks, and we were completely satisfied by all the bars. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Very Nice Hotel"
I love the jungle decoration. The hotel is very well maintained and the staff are friendly. Only con is that we couldn't get waiters to get drinks at the beach, you have to walk back to the bar by the pool. I definitely recommend the hotel.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU BOOK!!!"
If you have never been to an all inclusive resort you may find this one OK. If you have been to other resorts I am confident that you will NOT. This resort is small which is nice and we traveled with our 20 year old son and his friend which allowed us to meet many wonderful people. Past that the resort did not live up to any other all inclusive we have […] stayed at before. The food is poor at best and we are simple folks that don't need a lot and after speaking with many people at the resort everyone had the same feeling on the food. The hours for the bars are set up horribly wrong, the pool bar which has a swim up side and a walk up has ONE overworked bartender and long waits, the snack bar never had the items listed as offered, typically just hamburgers and hot dogs and again ONE cook and long waits. After 6 pm you can only find ONE bar open for the rest of the night and no food at that bar and a decent walk to get some chips or snacks. At the snack bar there is a soda machine with no cups to use. One must go get a cup at a bar and come back. If you want to get in the hot tub you must pay the premium wrist band. The beach is amazing but there are many other resorts close by with the same beach. We were only approached twice to participate in any games etc and never saw the listed activities for the day take place? Beach Olympics were posted every day and never happened. At one bar you have to ask for a cookie located behind glass... NO WAY IS THIS ALL INCLUSIVE! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Excellent hotel close to the beach"
It was an amazing experience will definitely stay again! The food was good and they had a lot of variety. Thank goodness there was also a snack bar that served pizza, hotdogs, nachos, etc which was good for picky children. The rooms were nice and clean. The staff was friendly and inviting.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location !"
Great place to stay for the money,we stayed from 6/24-7/2/14 staff was friendly, food was good, accommodations were nice.We don't stay at 5 star resorts.Best place for a GREAT BEACH !!!! bikes, kayaks, snorkel gear all free...We would defiantly be back maybe not same time-frame (HOT,HUMID) staff recommended NOV-FEB for great weather.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice beach and pretty grounds. Needs food variety."
We stayed there during the last 2 weeks of June. Weather was excellent. Not too humid and not too hot as there was constant breeze on the beach. We loved the beach for the exception of constant water sports in front of the swimming area - Jet-sky, flyboard, boats picking up people created constant waves and spoiled the air with exhaust and gas smell. […] When there were no water sports, it was lovely. Food was okay, however, we were getting tired of it as there was the same thing every day for dinner. Breakfast was good, you can pick and choose different things. Lunch was okay too, but dinner was the same daily and their fish wasn't cook well. And since I don't eat meat much, I had to stick to salads and chicken:) However, pasta cooked in front of you was good. But how much pasta can you eat? Their restaurants seemed both good. The fist time we went to Italian, we liked it. It was at no charge and we enjoyed the food. However, the 2nd time we went, the meals weren't as good and we had to wait too long to get our food. I don't know what it depends on, the chef? Same restaurant, same dishes but tasted differently. Third time we were really disappointed as we waited extremely long and didn't even have desert as we ran out of patience. The food was good at the Mexican restaurant both times we went, but there is a charge of $6.00/person if you don't have special bracelet and we had to wait soooo long to get food. So don't go hungry there. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

This was our first time to Mexico and we had the best time!! The staff at the Reef Playacar is lovely and the travel agent on site was very helpful in helping us find places and things to do outside the resort area.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice and Close to the beach"
Nice place to stay but I do not recomend buy the all inclusive because the food is not good taste less, no much to choose from, every day They serve the same on breakfast, lunch and dinner, the snacks bars are little better than restaurants, after few days eating the same We went to 5th ave to eat.Genuine Expedia guest review
Front desk people very rude. First night we got there they were over booked and tried to stick us three nights across the street... Not in a hotel on the beach and a small swimming pool. Eventually after two hours of arguing they found us rooms. They were not accommodating at all. If you upgrade your bracelets be prepared for them to be out of the good […] alcohol early in the day. Also a kid pooped in the pool while we were there. Enjoyed the beach from them on. I will say the some of the restaurant staff were nice. Overall I would not recommend or stay there again Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"The worst hotel ever! Do not go there!"
It was just awful from the beginning! After a 7 hour flight to Cancun from a cold climate...(we were wearing jeans and snickers...our bet) and a 45 minutes drive to the hotel, with a baby... we finally arrived to The Reef! They welcomed us with a glass of champagne! Wooho right? After checking-in, I sales guy try to explain to us how the "all-inclusive" […] that is not "all inclusive" worked. He starts reading us the map.. lol.. really? I know how to read a map of a hotel... all he wanted to do is to try to send us with another sales guy the next day to convince us to buy a "timeshare"!!!!!! Wow... tired, hot, baby with full diaper... ready to eat and get in the pool and this guy is just trying to sell us stuff... After we changed we went to try to get food and a drink and all restaurants and bars were closed!!! They have hours... in a "all-inclusive" hotel! We found a food bar though with food that tasted like cardboard... drinks? we had to go to the lobby..OMG!!! are you kidding me???? Staff? some are nice, some are really rude. They seam tired of tourists, tired of their job.. I don't know but not the nicest people. ... at the end, they had construction on the floor above us, they said it was going to be for a few hours...more like all day and the next one.... Seriously... don't waist your time and money here! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Perfectly situated hotel."
The Reef Playacar was a lovely all-inclusive situated on the beach and close proximity to Fifth Avenue and the ferry to Cozumel. The property was beautiful with a jungle, waterfalls, clean pools and beautiful beach! Not overcrowded like other resorts. Friendly staff. Food was good, especially breakfast, and there was always something open until 2 a.m. […] if you were hungry. Activities at the pool were fun for teenagers and adults, especially water volleyball! Boogie boards, sailboats and kayaks were available for use. We loved this resort and plan on returning soon. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Fantastic affordable resort"
I was there last week with a friend and we had an amazing time! I would definitely recommend this resort to others. They greeted us with glasses of champagne upon arrival and were very friendly and helpful all around. There was a bit of trying to sell us things which was somewhat annoying after a while but they leave you alone when you say no. It seemed […] to have a sort of cruise ship on land vibe since it was a very small resort and we kept seeing the same people all week. The location was fabulous as it was a short walk into town. As others mentioned the Italian restaurant was fabulous. I enjoyed the buffet, always fresh food available. The shows left something to be desired, but were entertaining nonetheless. We agreed to do the time share sales pitch (even though the INSIST it is not a time share) and I was definitely irritated by the end of it. They told us 90 minutes and had us there over 2 hours. Since we spent a week there it wasn't the end of the world but as soon as we said no they got a little aggressive and nasty. This didn't surprise me though as it is their job to sell to us. In the end we enjoyed our discounted massages on the beach and it was well worth it! You can't beat the views, absolutely gorgeous beach front with beautiful pools and a swim up bar. My only real complaint comes from our last day. One of the local men working at the Marina (their water sports area) asked me (a young female) an incredibly offensive and vulgar question. Otherwise great! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"This place is legit"
We looked at literately every all inclusive in Playa, and decided to go with this one for multiple reasons. Its on the beach, many are deceiving and are not actually on the beach. The food is actually good, the buffet is decent with a good number of variation every day, but the best part is the Italian and Mexican restaurants that are included for free […] if you upgrade for like 10$ extra a night (highly recommended lowest level of upgrade, the others are waist of money IMO). To be clear i have a deadly allergy to sea food and had no issues at any of the eateries over 6 days, which highlights their kitchen cleanness and attention by staff. Its a medium sized place, with lots of easy access to chairs on the beach or pool area no need to wake up at 5am to get a chair, we commonly would find ours around noon with no problem. Its a 5-10 min walk along the beach into town and the beach in front of the Playacar hotels is much nicer than the beach closer to Playa. Its also a 5 min walk to where the hotels end and there is natural beach. The staff here is awesome! if you tip the bartenders and waiters like a single dollar a meal and or a maybe twice a day at the bar you can get the higher quality booz without paying 15$ a day for the super upgrade bracelet and they staff will love you 10x more, best advice i got on the first day there. Id buy excursions in town over the hotel place as we did 1 each way and over payed through the hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Hotel grounds are nice, but extremely slippery"
Had a great time despite a lot of rain.....hotel grounds are nice, but rooms are only ok. The majority of the staff was very good to excellent. Beware, if it rains or your feet or shoes are wet from the pool, you or many from your group will slip and fall down. Way too much marble and ceramic tile, and polished wood for safe walking. "Correct but "sans plus""
I like the bed (very comfortable) and the room in general nice, but I can't get over about the Wi-Fi charges, you need to pay 7 USD per day for a slow and bad quality internet. "Nice and friendly staff, but bad policy"
We were informed that the WIFI is free, but when we get there they told us a different story. 15 USD per day - disappointed. Bar in next to the pool is nice - however, they only have one guy working there and I waited 30 min for my drink. Ice cream machine is the snack bar never work or only chocolate flavor and very watery... Front desk can't give […] us any towel card till our last day. The day we checked in they told us they ran out of it and we have to use our room's towel to go swim. My room's Air Condition is broken and I sweat like a pig all nights. We arrived off season. Beautiful facilities. The beach was unparalleled. I have stayed at a pricier place in Riviera Maya but this time I was looking for something a little less expensive but retaining the things I really care about at a resort: the look and feel of the place; friendliness of staff, clean pools, and a nice beach. I wasn't looking for […] fancy rooms, but clean rooms. I found everything I wanted and more at the Reef. The waiters at the restaurants, the activity directors, the spa workers, and the guys sweeping the leaves off the sidewalks were not only friendly, but in many instances, they went out of their way to make our stay special. They really got to know us and actual friendships were built between us and the staff. That made the biggest difference in how we perceived our stay. We also greatly enjoyed tea/coffee everyday at 4:00 served in a the beautiful outdoor lounge in the jungle by the warmest baristas. Free bicycles were available to ride into town. The food was better than expected for an all-inclusive. The beach was clean and spectacular. However, no one will come by on the beach to take your drink order, and at first, it seemed that the bartenders were being put out by serving us, but they loosened up a little the longer we were there. There was nightly entertainment which was indeed, entertaining. The snack bar is pretty much open whenever the main buffet or other restaurants are closed, so finding food or drink is never a problem. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Small, friendly boutique hotel. Loved it!"
I went to the Reef Playacar for 5 days with my 17 year old daughter, my sister in law and my 20 year old nephew. We all loved the overall experience. Close to Playa De Carmen. The gym needs to be renovated, but you can still get a work out. The food is not the best I've had, but really, for the money, this place is a gem!!Genuine Expedia guest review

"Our second time at this resort"
We were so happy to see that after four years, the resort was as beautiful as we remembered. The staff are wonderful, helpful and always pleasant. The gardens are well maintained and gorgeous. The activities are fun, especially the water aerobics in the pool each day, followed by the dance lessons. Starting each day with coffee by the pool, looking […] out at the white sands and turquoise waters was our favorite. The food in the buffet was always fresh and always appealing to the eye and the taste buds. We went to the Italian for dinner 3 of our 7 nights and were pleased each time. The menu does change, but each offering was great. We did not get to the Mexican restaurant, but it did look good. We were not at all disappointed with our stay this time or last time and we will go back again. Great place for families too, we watched the children participate in many activities within the Kids Club. I would absolutely recommend this resort to anyone heading to Playa. "Very fun atmosphere, but not because of the rooms"
If you plan on being out and about a lot in the Playa Del Carmen are this i the hotel for you. We loved the atmosphere around the hotel, pool, beach, and eateries. When it comes to rooms you are not getting a nice place to stay, you are just getting a small room with a really hard mattress to sleep on. For us it worked great because we were out and […] about with so many things to do in Playa del Carmen and who really wants to be in the room very much. The stay at the resort was great. However we arrived with no luggage, which was delayed by the airlines. "Love the Reef, a small quaint resort"
This has been our 7th trip to the Reef. We love the jungle setting and the small buildings on the property. Everyone has a outside entrance to their room and a balcony with table and chairs. The property is clean, the food is good, with plenty of choices for each meal at the Chula Vista buffet. We usually go to the sit down dinners at the Terraza Grill […] and the Botticelli restaurants twice each during our stay. The food is good and the service is great. I am a diver, the Reef Marina has never failed to give me first class service with outstanding dive masters and beautiful sites to dive. This last trip we had special needs that required the staff (several times) to go out of their way, every request was fulfilled with out question and with a smile. We can't thank the staff enough. Daniel and Willie at the front desk, Fernando at the Terraza Grill and his staff, Daniel and his staff at the Chula Vista, Bruno and Stephon at the Reef Marina. One thing that makes a great vacation is being around nice people that smile and are there to help. We never had any staff that didnt smile and greet us with a warm Hola. "Great beach!! Food just ok."
The hotel grounds are beautiful! The room was just fine. The bathrooms are in bad shape. Felt like I was going to fall through the bathtub to the room below. The tubs have been caulked several times and just need to be torn out. The real problem with this hotel is what they don't tell you. Extra charge for the safe....ok fine but the charge is minimal, […] why not include it? Extra charge for internet.....ok, no problem. Extra $18 per day for premium alcohol.....I don't drink a lot so this didn't bother me, other than the fact I didn't know this when I booked the trip. Then, when we asked out mini fridge to be stocked, we were asked "did you have 5 sodas when you arrived?" I said yes and then I was told the first 5 sodas are free. "You have to pay after that." This really made me frustrated. Our phone didn't work in our room even asking it to be turned on or repaired daily. I borrowed one of the hotel bikes and the pedal fell off. When you ask for fresh towels at the end of the day, you are told they are out even though you can see them behind the counter. At breakfast, they don't have bacon, sausage,etc....out. It is under the counter and have to ask for it. So, if you didn't know to ask, you would never have it. There are two pools but only one is really set up for guests. The other does not have many sun chairs around it and they set up a buffet in front of it. Overall, this place was disappointing. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Good location to Playa Del Carmen"
Upon arrival with my husband Mother and 2 kids the man at the check in was not very welcoming and seemed grumpy, the lobby is very small and had no AC. The food in snack bar is great and buffet was good every day. The Mexican was a huge disappointment and the Italian was just ok. Its a smaller hotel than we are used to so I thought that this would make […] it make it more personal but I was wrong about that. The staff are very sullen and grumpy bar a few that I will mention, Daniel the head waiter in the buffet room was great ! went out of his way to get me cold milk for my sons cereal as there was none for 2 days. Roxanna was lovely and always greeted us with a smile. Felix was the only bartender who seemed happy to be working there. The entertainment staff were all great also. My favorite waiter Gudalupe was so sweet and kind in the buffet for dinner every night that we went to his section for him to serve us. There is no drink service by pool or at the beach which is a pain because there is always long lines and the only 2 bars that we had acces to.. I lost my key to the safe and had to have a guy come up and drill into it as it is a old lock and key system that they have to break into and charge you $100 to do this. Rip off ! There is no fish in the ocean which was so strange as we brought all our snorkel gear with us but there is no marine life there at all. We were a bit disappointed but still had fun as its what you make of it. The grounds are lovely to walk through. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Everthing I had read in your reviews were correct"
Our stay was wonderful. The rooms are a bit dated but very clean. If you are a late riser ther was quite a bit of noise in the morning with the closing and opening of doors. The beach was absolutly beautiful and there were lots of activities. They could use a couple more rows of umbrellas. I have a daughter and she had a blast. Manuel's ceramic painting […] is great. My daughter enjoyed creating her own and she was kepy busy everyday w/ activities. We did a half day snorkling trip which I highly recommend. The pool bar was a lot of fun but they could use new bar stools. I did not upgrade my band for alcohol. It worked out well except I am a Vodka drinker. They had Smirnoff which was fine but they ran out. I do not recommend the Mexican version. The beer I drank was fine which was dois equis on draft. The tequiila was not the best but still drinkable. We ate at all three restaurants. I thought the food even though not top of the line was fine. The buffet for brakfast and luch had a lot of variety. Most of our dinners was at the Italian restaurant. The wine that came w/dinner was from Chile and quite good. The only reason we did nt rate this resort 5 stars was our terrible experience w/ Vacation resorts. Stay away from them unles you are seriously considering buying in. We were not and only did it because the greeter when we arrived told us he could get us a realy good trip to Xcarret if we listened to their pitch.
