"Love this place!"
I've been to the reef 4 times already and I can't wait to go back. My favorite thing about the Reef is the hospitality of the staff! Besides that, I love the resort itself and the beach is amazing!!! The resort is walking distance from town so you can enjoy a nice and safe walk to town at night or during the day, or you can take a 5 minute cab ride. The hotel is within a gated affluent subdivision that is Playacar. We walked thru the residential area and enjoyed the beautiful houses and pretty gardens while walking to 5th Avenue. We like that they buffet restaurant closes at 10.30 because we arrived late. There are 2 other restaurants upstairs for sit down but it does not require reservation. […] Our favorite is Brutanellis. They also have a snack bar and an ice cream parlor. The employees are so nice and polite. Very friendly nd caring. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Dated but comfortable hotel"
We spent three nights at the hotel. The room was large, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was a little dated but the towels were of good size and dried well even in the humid weather. We liked that there was so much lush foliage throughout the grounds.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great small resort."
Great smaller resort, with excellent location about a 20 min walk to 5th ave. The staff was friendly with lots of smiles. Willie the bell hop was SUPER and very helpful. The only hitch we had was we booked a king bed and the room the gave us had two full sized beds. The location of the room was so good that we kept it. The buffet was average or above, […] always something good to eat. Drinks were good and always available. The beach is wonderful and plenty of chairs. This is not a party resort, but they do have entertainment and activities. Just a great place to go relax and have a good time. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Best vacation ever!"
This was the first vacation my husband & I have taken alone in 13 years. We normally take big family vacations First let me start by saying the grounds are beautiful They are everything the pictures look like and more. The staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. My husband got to play volleyball everyday which made him so happy. There was always […] something going on, even at night. We met such great people and are already planning next years trip with them!! The food was great. I highly recommend the Italian restaurant. We hated to leave and can't wait to go back. Had a great time at this hotel, travelled with a 4 and 1 year old and was a perfect sized establishment. Food was surprisingly good for an all inclusive and didn't have make reservations for the restaurants. "Nice, small hotel in an excellent location"
I have stayed in this hotel 4 times over the last 12 years. There have been ups and downs in my experiences, but I still think it is a very nice quiet place, that is not a cookie-cutter all-inclusive monstrosity that most of the others are. If you are looking for seclusion and peace with your spouse- it is a place to go, if you are looking for a noisy […] nightlife - this is not for you. There are tons of sightseeing opportunities, you will never get bored if you like snorkeling, swimming, touring ruins, walk on the beach. It is a very popular international destination and it is full of Italians, Germans, Mexicans, people from Spain, Peru, Uruguay, Canada, Russia, and so on. You will have fun. The only issue with the hotel - is you have to be prepared that you are in Mexico and everything is according to "mañana" lifestyle. Everything will probably be done, as you ask, by maybe not when you expect it. :) The food has been good at times, and boring at some other times. I was pretty surprised that people seem to like a permanent spaghetti cooking station - not something I am interested in when I am in Mexico... Anyway, if you are not extremely picky about food ( I am a gourmet cook, so my opinion is probably not very objective) - it is a really good deal for the price. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Reef Playacar - Playa Del Carmen"
We just returned from 1 week at the Reef Playacar. The resort is a small resort which we liked. It is set in a jungle setting - very nicely landscaped. Staff was always sweeping, cleaning and the resort was kept up very nicely. The food was your typical buffet, there was always something that everyone found to eat. This is Mexico, so things do taste […] a bit different than what we're used. Rooms were kept cleaned and restocked with plenty of water each day - air conditioning worked great, which was a great break from the heat and humidity. Beach was fantastic - water was crystal clear. The activities staff did a good job with keeping people entertained. However, did not like that their nightly shows were in an enclosed theater at the front of the resort - I prefer having the shows done outdoor, just a personal preference. Bars on the beach were closed at 6:00 p.m. - wished they had one down there opened later - had to go to the front of the resort away from the beach for a bar after 6:00 p.m. We ate at the Italian restaurant twice during the week - was very good. They do enforce the closed shoes rule, but only for the men, not the women. The 1st night our men did not have closed shoes and they mentioned something, but let it slide the first night and the 2nd night they wore tennis shoes and shorts. Overall this resort is great......we would definitely go back. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

It was my first trip to playa del carmen. I haven't been to an all inclusive hotel since I was a child. This one was pretty nice. Clean facilities. Friendly staff. Good food. Comfortable room. "Great for the price!"
I stayed at the Reef Playacar for a week and overall had a great experience. The room was clean & AC worked great. The view from the balcony was the best part! The hotel preserved some of the areas natural landscape so most rooms overlooked a jungle!! The beach was also very nice & clean. The hotel had 3 restaurants (a buffet, italian & mexican). The […] buffet was great for breakfast but lunch & dinner was a little repetitive. BUT the Italian & especially Mexican restaurants were delicious!!! The meat entrees were tender and flavorful! Definitely try them! Hotel is only a $9 cab ride from 5th & 12th street (downtown playa del carmen) & their nightlife was great! As far as the bars at the hotel go they all close early except for one which was open until 2am. The 2am bar was usually pretty dead and the bartender was very careless when making your drinks. But my boyfriend and I made friends from all over the world & we made our own fun at the bar! Overall you can't beat the price of this hotel & I would definitely recommend it for families or young people!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"luckily it was only for one night!"
the hotel itself was ok...on the beach with all the views and pool, bar, restaurants, snack bar, lounge, etc but the food and drinks (i am talking about the `juices`that i was offering for my 4 year old) were quite frankly, nearly inedible. literally the `juices`were some form of terrible syrup mixed with water and called òrange juice`...we had to throw […] them out after a taste and opt for water. the pool was filled with a group of drinkers at the swim up bar, which is to be expected in places like this but their loud obsenities could have been managed better by the staff as there were a number of families and small children using the pool as well. the pool also was dirty... i know you get what you pay for and the price was low for low season but the buffet food was pretty terrible as was the snack bar for late night munchies. the italian restaurant for dinner was ok actually and i stuck with house wines and sparkling instead of the mixed drinks as I was sure they would be disappointing as well. the rooms were fine and the place is nice overall with a good staff but the food and drinks were what motivated me to write this...actually terrible! "Reef playacar vacay"
Right on beach. Great staff all around. Dining options slightly limited but not as bad as other reviews seemed to make it. The standard all inclusive band is sufficient, unless you really want mid tier liquor (jack, captain, Cuervo, etc). If you will constantly being doing shots then upgrade your band by all means but wasn't necessary for us.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good pool and great beach but better places tstay"
Expected more from an all inclusive resort. The service was minimal; food seemed more like what you would find in a cafeteria; room attendants did a great job cleaning. Great pool and the beach was beautiful. It was a longer walk to 5th ave mall than expected but quick $7 cab ride.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Amazing hotel with awesome staff near the ocean!"
The hotel is amazing and the staff was more than attentive to any requests or needs. The beach front is perfect with powder sand and crystal clear water. The rooms are basic but very nice and well maintained. The grounds are beautiful and designed around nature so you don't feel like you are in a traditional resort. The food is perfect for a vacation […] get-away. The staff is willing to do anything to make your stay better and will work with any diet or needs to prepare delicious dishes to make you feel like you are at a 5 star resort. "Decent resort, BEAUTIFUL beach, GREAT location"
Stayed for 5 nights and we really enjoyed everything except the food and beverages. The staff was GREAT, the beach was beautiful and the resort is really close to town. It's about a 15 minute walk down the beach to get to town. The resort has a nice tropical feel with all of the gardens throughout. The quality of the food and beverages was poor, although […] the ice cream at the ice cream parlor is terrific (although ice cream parlor is only open for 2 hours from 4:00-6:00). We took a 2-person kayak out on the water for a little while and it was a lot of fun. It was easy to setup excursions through the travel agency at the resort. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We requested a room with a king size bed and were given one with double beds. Had to go back to the front desk three times until they gave us the one we requested. Front desk personnel were not very polite. Other people were posing as concierge trying to sell timeshare but they were ignored by hotel staff. It was a weird situation. "Great all-inclusive that is reasonably priced"
We had a great experience. The staff is wonderful. We stayed for 9 days, so the food was a little boring toward the end. Most of the resort (including the buffet restaurant) is not air conditioned except for your room and the lobby, so it was a little uncomfortable in August. There are plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas. On our walks along the beach, […] I saw that many of the resorts don't even have beach umbrellas and some had fewer chairs for their guests. It is a 15 minute walk to Playa del Carmen or a 70 peso taxi ride. The beach itself is fantastic and great for children. We did not choose the premium package and didn't feel that we missed out on anything. We took a day trip to Tulum, but we took a 'colectivo' from Playa del Carmen and it only costs us about 1/10th of what a tour would cost and dropped us off at the entrance to the ruins. "Great Beach-Timeshare posing as Concierge"
Great beach, tropical jungle atmosphere, pools great but little dirty. Buffet food good but not great. Restaurants did not enforce dress code as long as no flip flops or swimsuits and did not need reservations. Knowing some Spanish is a plus. Entertainment staff very charming as well as restauraunt staff. Only negatives were not being able to move beach […] chairs close to ocean and TIMESHARE SCAM! Concierge becomes your best friend immediately upon arrival and we felt obligated to him to listen to the pitch for 60 minutes. (Don't know why we felt obligated guess but were not on our guard) It took 3 hours. Timeshare/vacation club scam very slick and believable. Don't fall for it. They even use illegal tactics although reps are very charming. We kept saying no and finally just had to get up and leave. Stay away from this and trip will be great. "GREAT LOCATION, NICE & REASONABLY PRICE"
Really enjoyed my stay, food was good, staff great, beach was amazing-no rocks in water. Rooms are descent but need updated decor-even in the videos for upgraded rooms the decor is the same as the standard room i was staying in, the only difference was that the upgraded rooms come with a separate livingroom & dinning/kitchenet area. Bars in pool are […] need to be open all day-both the snack bar & swim up bar close at 6pm-then you have to get your booze from the front lobby or buffet or front upstairs bar which is really incoviently for those guest who are still enjoying the beach or pool in the early evening. Didnt like that we are on the 3rd floor & they dont have elevators. Pool w/the swim up bar gets really crowded untill the swim up bar closes at 6pm-so it tends to get really dirty & hot-doesnt help that that pool is near some palm trees so alot of debri falls into the pool-they should have someone cleaning out the debri constately especially when its crowded & had been windy the last couple of days. Alchohol is weak, if you dont buy the premium all inclusive brand-but its expensive w/additional $18 per day per adult-NOT worth it. Overall i enjoyed my stay at the Reef Playacar & would recommend to family & friends. Only paid $1050 pp for 10days 9nights so the price was reasonable for 3 star hotel. Would return =) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great Location and Beach"
We stayed at the Reef July 10-18, 2013 and enjoyed our stay overall. We chose the economy booking through Expedia and were a little disappointed to discover the only rooms available to us were closest to the lobby and furthest from the pool and beach. No upgrades were available on-site. The room was on the ground level and near a sewer pipe so there […] was some odor from time to time. We didn't spend a whole lot of time in the room anyway. The room itself was comfortable and clean. The hotel has a beautiful jungle setting with animals (sereque, lizards and even a monkey) commonly seen. The Chula Vista restaurant is the primary eating spot and is next to a pool and the beach. Beautiful view from here but the food was bland and repetitive. We ate at the two upstairs restaurants and those were much better. Our two boys enjoyed the snack bar and daily ice cream social. One nice change would be to keep the Chula Vista or pool bar open or remove the expensive add-on for Nico's bar near the beach. The only bar open late was above the lobby. We made the mistake of agreeing to take part in the fractional ownership pitch and were promised deeply discounted tickets for a jungle excursion. We were told the presentation would take only 60-90 minutes but it took 3 hours. When we went to collect our tickets, we discovered they were $70 more than promised. Non-motorized water equipment available for free, including catamarans, boogie boards, kayaks and snorkel gear. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"affordable hotel by the beach"
Decent 'All Inclusive' for the price.Beautiful beach and great proximity to Playa. Food in the buffet dining room was very good with a great selection. Really could use some air conditioning. Restaurant staff and activity staff were very nice! Specialty restaurants not really special (Require slacks & sleeved shirts--no big deal! But we felt this rule […] was applied more to Americans!) We did not find the service to reflect a 'specialty' experience. Actually felt the waiter had a bit of an attitude! They're a bit hung up on having you 'upgrade' your visit to 'Premium'' for a few bucks a day to get good drinks & 'privilages'. Went to dinner @ the Mexican Specialty Restaurant and they said they had to charge us $5 per person unless we were 'Premium'. Kind of ruined the mood! My daughter wanted a glass of water, while playing volleyball, on the beach and the 'Premium Bar' staff told her next time to go to the 'Non-Premium' bar for service? "The Reef, 2nd, 6 day stay"
Great family budget type resort that gives everything a resort should to a family visit. This was our second six day stay in two years. The crew is extremely hard working and very outgoing. The crew makes me feel like I am special. The resort is spotless as was our room, the beach, the restaurants, the crews uniforms...and did I mention how hard the […] crew works? We always feel safe at the resort and beach. I took not only my handicapped wife, but my 6 month pregnant daughter, her 3 year old daughter and our other guests took along their 9 month old and 4 year old son. The water at the hotel restaurant is filtered so we had no water problems. The layout of the hotel makes beach access very convienient. The Reef personel accomodated our room requests per our special needs with my wife and children. One of our family members became dehydrated and Willie, one of the Reef crew, went out of his way at 1am to insure that the cab was ready when we got there. Willie also helped load our sick family member. Willie did not know if the sickness was viral or dehydration, but he personally loaded her without regard to his own health repercussions.....this is typical of The Reef personell, teating us just like family. We had a great time in this resort. It is a small resort but enough for us. If you are looking for a fancy and big resort this is not for you. "Great all inclusive hotel"
The hotel is right on the private beach. The beah is clean but does not have any lifeguards. The sand is fine and the water is amazingly warm. Cleanness if our room, which was located right next to the main pool, was miticoulous. Fresh towels as well as stocked fridge every single day. The cleaners are amazing. The staff is pretty much friendly and […] smiling at all times. Three restaurants: international buffet- some things good some things lacking in taste and spice; Mexican restaurant has a 5 dollar charge and its service is impeccable, even though it doesnot serve any Mexican not typical Mayan cuisine besides the starter; lastly the Italian retardant was the best by far, some things like lobster dinner were extra charge, otherwise it was free and a la carte. Great Italian cuisine and great staff. Mostly not a great choice of fruit though, which is kind of strange. Alcoholic beverages were fine in alcohol level but I'm also a girl and thus a lightweight. Two pools and a jacuzzi, which was disappointingly barely warm the entire time. Beach towels, bikes, free scuba lessons, free use of some of the water sport activities/ equipment. Enough chairs an umbrellas. Furthermore, it's a good 15 min walk to playa itself but you can rent bikes for free. Animation staff was meh, kind of trying to engage but constantly unsuccessful. No free Internet anywhere but Starbucks in the city center. Anyhow I stayed only a week and it was an amazing time. Highly recommended! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Small, cozy and compact, beach resort"
Our family of two adults and two kids liked this resort, and would be happy to come back. This was our fourth vacation in Rivera Maya. Generally we prefer small compact resorts, around 3-4 stars rating, with all amenities close by, and smaller crowds. We like the setting where the beach, pool, food and drinks were within 5 seconds walk. Did not expect […] butler at the door, or lobster every night, and this resort did not disappoint us. It is very cozy, we loved natural jungle setting, ice cream parlor tea time at the pool. The food was a good qualtiy for this rating, though the same every day, so we got bored with it by the end of our 7 day stay. Our favorite meal of the day was breakfast, we usually skipped lunch and ate at the snack bar instead, which was great, lots of guacamole (MMM), great service. Dinners were the ones that were boring, the other resorts usually offer themes in the buffet (today Italian, tomorrow Mexican, etc.) our kids were eating mostly pastas every night. We tried Italian a la cart restaurant (no reservation required), but were disappointed, seemed like they just brought the food from the buffet downstairs, they really need to improve on pasta prep. So we did not go to Mexican restaurant at all, plus they were charging $5 for it. The rooms were small, for two beds they can feet full size only, which is kind of tight, for big people. The room otherwise was clean. They do not provide hair conditioner... Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
