"Great hotel but some disappointing details"
01/27/15 JoaoBasso Joinville, SC
The hotel is of unquestionable high standard, and that´s why some issues are hard to overlook. I stayed there for 3 nights with my fiancée in a travel with a bigger group. Our room didn´t have double bed, it was two single beds put together. This is fairly common, but even the bedshirts were singles. I went to the reception and asked them to change for double bedshirts on the next day, or change our room, and was informed the hotel didn´t have enough rooms with double beds, not even enough double bedshirts for every guests. Thinking the recepcionist could have a wrong information, I also tried to send the request to the hotel´s email, and never had any reply. The wifi also didn´t work well in my room, and other friends commented the same too. When it connects, it is very slow as if it has low capacity for many guests at the same time. So, if you choose this hotel for its great location, good aesthetic or any other reason, I would just recommend to previously communicate with them and let them know in detail all your particular requests, and make sure they will be commited to meet them.
"A Palace Hotel next door to the Cathral"

A very impressive entrance, and a beautiful room overlooking the Cathedral square. Everything was very clean and well presented. We used the hotel car park, and have to disagree with the reviewer who said only a small car car reach it. We drove a Range Rover, right to the front door, and then ...carefully!! ... around a narrow road to their private car park. Just 9.90 Euros per day. Very safe. We had the buffet breakfast, which had everything you could want, including HOT scrambled eggs, and bacon. The coffee was from a machine,...ok but not the best. The bed was very comfortable, and even though we were right on the front, opposite the cathedral, we had a great nights sleep. The whole ground floor was having a complete redecoration while we were there, so everything was covered with plastic. But this did not detract from our enjoyment of the hotel. We would go again.
"Great location uncomfortable and noisy. Not a 4 stars hotel!"

We spent just a night but it was enough. The Hotel is right in front of the Cathedral, which is a great location, the entrance and main hall are big and nice, but that's all. The furniture is not old, it's broken, the carpets are dirty, the elevators are old. The resting areas are uncomfortable and lacking of seats. The room's corridor smells funny and the doors need paint. Our room was a disaster, the air conditioning didn't work and the window lead to a dirty noisy patio. No amenities in the bathroom, not enough toilet paper, not basing counter-top, even not toilet brush!! When we took a shower we found the previous guest's empty shampoo bottles inside the shower and the water came out into the bedroom... the beds were uncomfortable, and at 7 a.m the chambermaids started speaking and making noise outside our room!! Just not worth the money, I doubt this hotel deserves a 4 stars rating, Spanish Hotels are much better than this.

The hotel is right by the cathedral and within walking distance around the old town and local attractions. Yet it is sheltered by the church that it is quiet and peaceful hotel. We had group dinner there and the food and wine are both good. It is a hotel with character with reasonable price. Only small car can reach the hotel; otherwise you need to stop by the information centre below by the wall and walk up.
"Charming Hotel, great value"

What better location than the very heart of Avila right opposite the Cathedral. Beautifully located behind the City Walls this charming Hotel has a great feel of renaissance about it, as previous comments had made, a little "worn" but charming nonetheless. We had a great view of the Cathedral Plaza with a double bed and good sized bathroom with overhead shower and the other party with us had a triple room that was a great size, both clean and serviceable. Breakfast consisted of the basic buffet continental great croissants, fresh juice, cereals, yogurts, cold meats & cheese, breads, toast etc. It was an okay brekkie but as it was included in the price, good value for what you got. The morning coffee was from machine rather than freshly poured, I suppose that was buffet type convenience..but a real shame when the Spanish do coffee so well. Also, Please note as with most Spanish Hotels no tea making facilities in the room so take you travel kettle if its convenient. Overall, I would most certainly recommend this Hotel for its value for money and location, we only paid 127Euros for five (4Adults+1Child) and this inc breakfast! But.. If like us you have a car then park it just outside the walls, rather than paying daily Hotel charges and its free!
"Lived in but happy"

The Palacio Valderrabanos is located inside the old walled town of Avila in the province of Castilla y Leon it was an old Ducal palace it is in the cathedral plaza which is very romantic location, the décor, fittings and fixtures have that ancient 'worn look', the room that we stayed in was large for a double and the beds were comfortable the bathroom was fully equipped and everything was clean and tidy, the staff were unobtrusive in fact I only saw one. Within the hotel there is a basement restaurant called El Fogon de Santa Teresa where we had a forgettable evening meal.
"It's a hotel that I'd recommend"

Basically in my opinion the hotel have a few rooms remodeled (those shown in pictures by the management and the people who was lucky of that) and others in quite bad condition. It's not a matter of "old fashioned" style the rooms; the atmosphere is depressing as well as the stale smell. In the pictures I prefered to show some details other than a general view of the room. The breakfast is simple not the one for a 4 stars hotel. Parking is not in the in the same building but not too far although is unconfortable to have to return the key to the hotel everytime the parking is used. The service is just ok. The location is good taking into account that Avila is not big and there are many hotel in the surrounding area. By the way, I'm sure that some scenes of the movie "the shinning" were took in this hotel....be careful with the girls in tricycles on the corridor ;)
"Wonderful old palace, but I was indeed lucky"

I stayed 3 nights last summer using Avila as a hub for visiting Salamanca, and Segovia. I found the hotel absolutely gorgeous, but I was lucky: for lack of other rooms, I got an immense apartment or 3 rooms at the second floor facing both the cathedral square and the side road. Clean, the bedroom was delightful with nice paintings and with a huge comfortable bed. It was indeed, magic. On the bad side, the wi-fi never worked over our staying (they had "issues") and part of the desk personnel didn't speak anything but spanish. For the ones having such problems, there are a few steps with no go around between the reception and the elevators. Didn't get breakfast, so I can't comment there, but there are plenty of bars and pastry places around.

Ditto on several of the previous reviews. Great location inside the walls next to the cathedral, but that's it. My husband thought he had reserved the other Palacio hotel across the plaza. Much nicer facility. Our room, 211, had a limited view because of the restaurant exhaust fan. The noise and smells of the restaurant also made leaving the window open limited at best. Everything looked very worn. Doors were heavily scratched. Loose tiles on the bathroom floor. Old looking bedding and wall coverings. Looks and feels like a one star hotel. We didn't eat at the restaurant.
"I had the best room!"

I loved the comment I read that said it was "a little shabby in a genteel sort of way" -- this is a good description. It looks like an elegant hotel from a black and white movie. I had room 127 and felt like a principessa. Huge suite at least 4 times the size of the nice-sized room the bed was in. A window in the "living room" with little balcony on the front of the hotel (facing the grand cathedral) and another in the bedroom, facing the side street. Lovely people, impeccable service. Free fast internet in all the rooms. It was raining when I arrived so I took a taxi from the train station for under 5 euros. Went back by public bus -- 92 euro cents. Everything totally silent til about 8:15 the next morning, when the city started to come alive. Then I joined what must have been most of the local citizenry at the farmers' market on the small square nearby. Only signs I saw of current economic problems in Spain were a group of students marching in the rain chanting slogans for government support of education. (Had no problem getting money from ATMs.) I love Avila and this hotel is wonderful, timeless. Highly recommended. (I didn't eat breakfast or dinner here.)
