De Vere Hotel Mottram Hall - Alderley Edge

Mottram Hall must have been grand once. The sweeping grounds are lovely and the neighborhood is an oasis of Old England five minutes form Manchester's bustle. Convenient to Manchester Airport, one cannot fault the location, but the hotel itself is a different matter. The restoration of the three story manor house forgot to include elevators, and without […] porters, it's a chore hauling baggage to rooms in the sprawling hotel. Internet connectivity is available everywhere, except where it isn't. Promised WiFi doesn't reach many areas and a desk clerk's only solace was to note "There might be a cable somewhere in your room" (there wasn't). The rooms are small but functional, though the cleaning crew needs work - my tub/shower had toiletries left over from the previous tenant. The on-site restaurant is mediocre and service is even worse, though to management's credit when an even longer than usual delay prevented wine from showing up before the food (by 15 minutes) the manager offered personal and sincere apologies and comped a bottle - that part was very classy. The hotel seems to me seriously understaffed and overall, it's a pretty indifferent affair. Not recommended. Read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mottram Hall. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The grounds are enormous, containing a golf course and a lake. My wife and I stayed here on valentines day, a pre booked, and prepaid!, treat that I arranged. Whilst the hotel was fantastic, the service suffered somewhat. The spa staff openly talked about my wife whilst waiting in the doorway, which resulted in us not wishing to use the facilities. The staff in the restaurant forgot us on several occasions, we […] had to ask for everything twice, whilst others around us seemed to not have the same problems or timing issues. I understand that they were very busy, but they perhaps should have also been apologetic? Finally, I had to leave early leaving my wife to checkout, as I mentioned earlier it was prepaid, so ought to have been plain sailing. The building, grounds, staff and restaurant at the hotel are fantastic. The only let down was the small rooms. For the premium they charge I personally would expect more spacious rooms. Fantastic hotel. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. A lot of the rooms have been renovated recently and we were fortunate enough to have one of these overlooking the golf course. (Thank you Sam!) Meal was excellent in the restaurant and breakfast was served in our room. Not the cheapest of restaurants but excellent food and so not bad value […] overall. Only thing that put a damper on it was other noisy guests shouting in the corridor between 1am and 3am. I guess this is a downside of it being a wedding venue and not the fault of the hotel though. Our room 227, had mould in the bathroom and bedroom area especially round the windows. The fire door outside banged every time someone when went through it so it was difficult to sleep until 1.30 am Drinks were very expensive . On the positive the staff were friendly and helpful. Clean and comfortable room, helpful staff and perfect for family attending wedding reception at hotel. Enjoyed using pool facilities. Undergoing major re fit so expect some building work around you. The hotel is set in lovely grounds/golf course. The public rooms of the hotel have undergone a refurbishment, are comfortable and tastefully decorated. The first room allocated - the window faced a brick wall and I had to ask to be moved. The hotel was extremely busy. Lots of children. Arrived at the hotel, Staff was not courteous at all and they were just chatting and giggling amongest themselves, got ignored for a good 5 mins after arriving. Then it was a quick name confirm and here are your keys. No info at all on facilities or meals etc. so I had to look for the resturant and health club and to access the bedrooms I had to go […] outside to a different part of the building where some guests helped me to find our room. We always travelled in our sports gear so did not look posh like other guests, my young daughter felt uncomfortable and said she thought we were snubbed. I hastened to add this is the first time we felt like this and we have travelled a lot staying at different hotels for sporting events. Breakfast was slightly better, though the staff only served us the coffee and no one actually spoke to us to tell us about the breakfast or what is on offer. The food was average, nothing special just the usual breakfast items and self service. The health club floor was very filthy, had lots of hairs, slimmy to walk on plus mould in the shower areas, broken tap handle and non working light which made the show area very dark as it had no natural light in the room. The pool floor had lots of gritty bits as I walked across the pool. We can't fault the bedroom, beds very comfortable and it it was all very clean and warm. Read more

The room, staff and food all excellent, however, drinks were a bit expensive..but you are probably paying for the surroundings your in...also as there is no lift in the hotel it makes getting your luggage to your room interesting...having said that I would certainly go back.

I've stayed at Mottrum Hall twice in the last 2 years. Each time, the fire alarm has gone off in the middle of the night. Aside from that, the hotel is in need of refurbishment, the outside of the hotel promises so much but once you are inside, it needs a complete refit.

A comforotable stay and the staff are always more than happy to help with anything. I have to say the food was very poor though. I had room service both nights I stayed and for the price of the dishes I was very disappointed. My salad leaves were brown and chicken was very dry, not pleasant! The choice at breakfast is always good though.

I almost didn't book this hotel, due to some of the negative reviews posted on this site and others, however, I am happy to report that we had a lovely time. The location is amazing and the hotel is more than satisfactory. BUT..... While we were there, there was a wedding and a golf party and the hotel simply could not cope.
