Mayflower Hotel - London

Close to a train station/metro, small but comfortable rooms, breakfast was adequate and plentiful. The room was quiet and comfortable with everything one hopes for in a hotel room. Restaurants only a short walk away. In general it was a pleasant stay.

This was one of the most dirty hotels that I have ever had the displeasure of staying at . First, they didnt change the sheets unless you asked them to do so. i paid for a standard double but got a lumpy, single mattress. Hotel wi-fi didn't work half the time and signal quality was worse in the room. My room had no bath tub, just a shower. If you wish to sleep in a sardine can, then you'll like this hotel. We travel a lot & have never seen anything like it. We are normal-sized but had to slither around the bed (a double?). Forget unpacking a suitcase or finding a drawer or squeezing into the chair wedged underneath a shelf-like area (a desk?). The mattress? Terrible: lumpy, like a 1950s […] motel. It made for a bad night's sleep. Worst of all, I was in London for a meeting. It was impossible to prepare the material I needed & get ready in a comfortable manner. To state the positives (there were some), the location is good (near metro), the room was clean (how the housekeepers managed with NO space, I'll never know). Considering the thumbnail size of the bathroom (shower only), it was fine. Ostentatious (perhaps to compensate for the dismal room?). The towels were nice. Breakfast was adequate, crowded (small area). The housekeepers did a terrific job, but the desk staff was a mixture of polite & disinterested. Maybe the Stiff Upper Lip of the British? Actually, I suspect it has more to do with the fact that guests--squeezed into miserable spaces--must regularly be in bad moods. Had the room cost 1/2 of what it did, then it'd be (perhaps) OK. If I were traveling alone, with a backpack, it might have been OK. Maybe one person can find a comfortable spot between mattress lumps. But if you have 2 people & suitcases to set down, or need to work at a desk, or want to move in the room, do not stay here. Read more

The rooms are far smaller than advertised, with the bed simply being a mattress placed upon a wooden box. The room I stayed in had no air-conditioning and only one chair for two occupants. The 'expensive, boutique furnishings' consisted of a cheap faux-fur throw and four pieces of framed embroidery. The other decor consisted of chipped paintwork and […] scarred flooring - there were no carpets in the room I stayed in. The bathroom was VERY small and did not have a shower curtain and the floor by the door became very wet, very quickly. The breakfast selection consisted of croissant, fruit or cereal, but as a 37-year old, I don't think that Coco Pops constitute a suitable breakfast. A cooked selection is available at extra cost, although this is not pointed out when booking the hotel. When I took my observations of small rooms to the hotel management, I was informed by the duty manager "I can show you smaller rooms if you like". I will not be staying at a Mayflower Hotel again. I would strongly advise persons reading this review to try a Premier Inn, since the rooms are larger and better furnished, with better service and much better breakfast. Read more

Hotel located in a good area, found it easy enough to drive to at the weekend, but try to arrive later on to avoid car parking meter charges. Hotel staff were friendly, room well appointed and clean. Price paid was competitive for the area, very pleased with the experience.

A problem with the booking system meant we had paid twice for our room. After telling us firmly that we would have to pay, we made a few calls of our own to Hotel.com & were given a 100% refund. We were in "luxury suite" 55, on the second floor. Moving about the hotel is confusing: there are several sets of staircases that all look identical & signage […] is poor. The lift broke on our 2nd day. The room was nicely furnished, with kitchen area, sofas & four poster. The marble bathroom had a double power shower. There was a flat screen TV, an ipod docking station & an AC unit. Now for the niggles...scuff marks on the bedroom walls; controls for 1 of the showers did not work; a bag of dirty laundry outside our bedroom door for the length of our stay; no dressing table mirror/stool so to dry my hair I had to stretch my cable round a corner & sit on the floor squashed into the corner to use the mirror on a door; the bathroom smelt rather unpleasant when we arrived; we had to ask for more tea, coffee & milk; at breakfast, we had to ask for: coffee, spoons, plates, bowls, jam; workmen traipsed through the breakfast room, carrying tools & paint whilst guests were eating; choice of cooked breakfast was limited, with no bacon & the bedroom was very cold in the early evening & then boiling hot in the middle of the night & morning. I had a single occupancy room and unfortunately didn't realise just how small the room was to be. I'm not a fussy person and will put up with pretty much anything as long as it is clean but I was just very shocked at how small it was. This really would only be a 'need a bed for the night' kind of stay. You wouldn't be able to spend a relaxing night […] in.....you have to lie down to watch TV! Maybe measurements of what you are paying for of the room would have meant I would have been better prepared and I could have made the choice as to whether I would have paid that sort of money for it. The Mayflower is a friendly hotel within a mere 4 minutes walk of Earls Court underground station (step-free access to this station is wonderful for people with heavy rolling luggage!). My single room on the top floor was quiet and cosy but had two major faults: a) the bathroom was tiny - you couldn't sit on the WC and close the door, you couldn't get […] your head near the minute basin, and the shower - overhead only - was a bit slow; b) there was a counter under the window, but no stool, so you could only sit on the bed, with your chin level with the counter. So, if you were even moderately corpulent, you would have trouble using the bathroom, and if you were a bit short, you would have to stand at the window counter. I wasn't told about this when I checked in and no apology was offered for the 5 minute walk I then had to make.
