Arrived just as the restaurant was closing but they called up and we had our meal. Brian greeted us and remembered our names for the rest of the stay. Went to have a drink in the pub at 9:30pm and ended up staying until 2am singinging and listening to jokes with a group of Dubliners. Great advice on where to go and what to do in the area from the locals. Made our trip! Don't miss it!

This was just an overnight break, but boy, with a difference. Friendliness, complimentary Coffee & Scones on arrival, comfort, great service, great staff, hands on Owner, excellent food for our meal, they even sang Happy Birthday to me after with a lovely meringue nest c/w sparklers. Now what more could a body ask for. Well yes, of course not to forget the talking Parrot in the Lobby. Also Very Friendly :-))) What a Fab place this is to Stay. We Will Be BACK. Many Thanks to you all in Abbeyglen.

"Welcoming!"
04/27/15 MaggieHCork Cobh, Ireland
the hotel is a beautiful castle with really comfortable beds and very tasty food. The staff is nice and helpful. the owners are there to make you feel welcome and accepted wherever you come from. I stayed there for two nights by myself at the end of April 2015 while visiting the Connemara. I have nothing bad at all to say about this hotel. I will recommend it to anyone going up to Clifden and the area. Between 3 and 4pm you will get complimentary tea/coffee and scones and at 6.30, they will blast you with free champagne with a piano serenade. Just brilliant. While having your dinner, a staff member will play piano, nice to enjoy background music while eating. The food is delicious. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Clifden is two minutes walk away with plenty of pubs and restaurant serving local fresh products. thanks to Brian the owner for all his help with my EV.

"We had a blast here!"
04/24/15 gigi2005 long island, ny
The abbeyglenn castle is very picturesque. My hubby and I stayed here for 2 nights and loved the quaint little area of clifden. Driving in Ireland is terrifying. The roads are narrow and being American doesn't help matters. Once you make it to your destination alive you just want to decompress. The hotel grounds are very pretty. The hotel itself is a bit old and could use some updating. The room. The keys are ridiculous. It took forever to open and lock the room because these old style keys with a HUGE tag were a joke! The room was huge with a four posted bed and gas fireplace. The beds were hard with horribly thin pillows. Big bathroom. Overall clean. The restaurant. They are very welcoming and put a flag from your country on your tables (as if you couldn't already tell we were American) the food is presented in silver trays and you get a big reveal when the top is lifted on,y to be....um disappointed. The food was mediocre Wifi is only available in the lobby area. This was onconvenient The bar...at 10 the piano man played and most of the hotel fists were Irish and sang well known Irish tunes. We really enjoyed this. Hubby and I were the youngest guests by about 40 years but everyone was very friendly and welcoming. We had the best time here! The location is very quaint ans scenic and walking into to for Dining is highly recommended.

"Just a special place to stay"
04/24/15 judgeray carrickfergus
My wife and I have just spent a wonderful three day break at the Abbeyglen.Although it is a nearly six hour journey by car for us,it was worth every minute of it. As soon as you enter the car park,Kevin is out to help you to your room with your luggage. At reception John is there to give you a warm welcome and make sure booking in is as easy as possible. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable, it had all the amenities one would want, the only drawback was there was no WiFi. At six thirty there is a champagne reception free of charge one can have as much champagne as you like.At this reception either Paul or Brian, the proprietors of the hotel are there to welcome you to the hotel and give a interesting talk about the Abbeyglen, the history and interesting places in the surrounding area.Heading up the stairs one can hear the piano playing such a air of relaxation. At the door Freda is there to help you and has a warm word with everyone, such a lovely lady. The food is really first class and the service is great.During the meal again either Paul or Brian go round every table welcoming every guest to their hotel. After your meal there is a singsong in the bar.The bar is quite small but has a great atmosphere, the fact it is quite small means it is more friendly and you can have a better chance of meeting people,it's just like one big happy family. All in all this is one of the most friendly and well run hotels I have ever been in.If you are looking for great food and good craic, this hotel is is hard to beat in my opinion.

"Beautiful and quaint"
04/22/15 Cindy K Tampa, Florida, United States
This hotel may not be for some people but it was right up my alley. The Skeleton key to open the doors, the full suits of armor here and there, the beautiful manicured garden with bubbly fountain or just steps to the babbling brook that runs through the property, this place has charm to spare. All the staff are locals so if you need directions anywhere, they can get you there safely. The property sits just off the "Sky Road" which I totally recommend and will review separately. The hotel has modern amenities of elevator lift and spa treatment rooms, but step into the bar and step back in time, the fireplace burns peat, the grand piano is well worn and sounds wonderful. The proprietor is a genial fellow who likes to greet every guest personally and quite warmly. I was so pleased with my stay at Abbeyglen, I would highly recommend it to anyone in the Connemara/Clifden area. Some difficulties for some people I imagine are the hotel is not wifi everywhere, it is a castle, the walls are 3 feet thick in spots. There is free wifi in the bar, dining room and lobby area, so you must go into these room to access the wifi, also the skeleton keys take a little bit to get used to if you are used the credit card type swiping thing. I did not mind this old fashioned lock at all, I love it. The rooms are a little dated but who doesn't love and older wing back chair in the room to relax in after a delicious dinner?? I'll take that any day to the stiff sterile chairs you find in modern places. The sheets are clean, and bathrooms are spotless, the tubs are quite narrow but deep. I loved every moment at this beautiful property and truly recommend it.

"Just Perfect as an Experience Not to be Missed"
04/18/15 Helen K Oxford, England, United Kingdom
A heavenly drive to a heavenly spot in the wilds of Connemara. Of course there are creaky floorboards, and eccentric fittings in the rooms, it's a castle after all. But it is just magical. The beds are beautiful, some four posters; the service is outstanding, not just friendly but engaging, witty and delightful. There are complimentary tea and scones, prosecco and canapes before dinner, and wonderful food; so do book dinner bread and breakfast. Needless to say the breakfast didn't disappoint either. And there is also a parrot, views, and a charning host who regales you with piano and song. Altogether an unmissable experience which I garautee you will love.

"A lot of charm, great service and a special touch"
04/17/15 NomadeModerne Zurich, Switzerland
To start with, Connemara area is just a wonder and Clifden a very charming village. The welcome (by the clerks and a parrot that sometimes walk among the guests...) at the castle has been extremely friendly and you get immersed immediately in the Abbeyglen atmosphere. Don't expect a modern hotel equipped with the most modern facilities (e.g.: wifi only in the common areas that are however comfortable despite their age) but it has a lot of charm. You'll get an invitation to a glass of champaign and a very colorful explanation, by a member of the staff that seems to have lived in the castle since ever, on the history of this castle and the surroundings. The rooms are very large, relatively well equipped and very quiet. Breakfast is good and dinner as well even if we preferred the nice restaurants in Clifden. The owner adds a touch of eccentricity but it adds again to the place's charm. So if you don't expect the most select place, this is a great place to stay!

"Wonderful Castle and Lovely Rooms!"
04/15/15 jetta1950 Denver, Colorado
Fantastic large rooms, with large windows looking toward woods. The staff were exceptional and most attentive. Each room (bedroom, study or bar) greeted you with a fireplace and a comfortable seat. Great food in both the bar and the restaurant.

"Old world charm in a castle"
04/15/15 indiavoyager New Delhi, India
After a long drive from Shannon, and doing the Sky Road, we stayed at Abbeyglen for a night. Our main objective was to stay atleast one night in a 'castle' - and this place served the purpose well. A young guy helped us with luggage from parking. Check-in etc was smooth and we got a garden facing room on 2nd floor. The bed was comfortable and we were completely relaxed. There was a wedding party going that night, so guess we missed all the free scones, invite to bar, and piano sessions. The place was really busy with lot of guests at the party -- which I think took away staff's attention from staying guests. Next morning, we actually 'felt' lack of smiles and Good mornings....but soon realized it were only the 3-4 lady staff that had passed by. Soon we were met by other Gents staff who greeted us cheerfully. The staff at breakfast was attentive and courteous. The country flags on table were a nice touch. The view from the room was nice, with tip of twelve ben mountains visible. The inhouse parrot is also interesting. I am deducting one star for the attitude for 2-4 lady staff we met in morning.

"The Treatment Rooms are Amazing xxx"
04/14/15 mapvburke Clifden, Ireland
The Treatment Rooms are truly a place to go to Relax, unwind and feel stress free. The Cottage is designed beautifully and feels so private and away from it all. I had a facial Treatment and found Megan my Therapist so professional and kind. My Mom had the hot stone massage by Megan also and said it was the best massage she ever had. I also got lash extensions for the first time with Michelle and they have lasted ages and look amazing. I recommend the Treatment rooms as a first class establishment for beauty treatment. and the ladies who work there are dedicated and enthusiastic. I have book my next treatment already x.

"Lovely place to stay"
04/14/15 RainydaysDublin Dublin
Abbeyglen is a family run hotel and has all the hallmarks of a well run and customer based hotel. It is an old fashioned place and suited to the older generation. That being said they do cater for all ages but perhaps not necessarily for young children. The owners are very friendly, welcoming and make you really feel at home. The food both at breakfast and dinner was very good and there was a huge variety. The champagne reception on one of the evenings we were there was a very nice touch and something you will never find in one of the larger chain hotels. The only negative would be the lady who checked us in. She seemed to be in a hurry and rhymed off the meals times etc hardly taking a breath. We got the impression she just wanted to get us to the rooms as soon as possible. She may be well aware of the meal times etc as she works there but for us it was a first time. Perhaps a bit slower the next time...... Other than that could not fault the Abbeyglen in any way.
