"What we were looking for"
Our first visit to Rome. Location was convenient to the train and sits literally on top of the Metra which we used to jump to various sites around the city. The concierge service was outstanding. Informed, providing our Roma Pass, acquired taxi when needed and just very helpful. The restaurant surprised us with its quality and the breakfasts were wonderful. "Convenient, friendly staff, great value"
This was a repeat stay at the Hotel Napoleon for me, and a first for my husband. We both love this place. It is convenient to the colosseum, the train station, the metro and bus lines. A couple of wonderful restaurants are right around the corner or down the street. Only negatives are the many many street vendors, selling everything from men's briefs […] to cheap jewelry to knock-off designer leather goods, but maybe some folks would find this useful. The neighborhood has changed since my first visit, and whether it is for better or worse time will tell. It illustrates what is occurring throughout Rome and, more generally, the nation as well, with calls to prayer now being heard from a nearby mosque, many men in Muslim caps and women in hijabs, and more 20 square meter storefront shops run by Chinese that don't sell anything really useful but occupy spaces that used to be occupied by little service shops (plumbers, electricians, seamstresses, etc) or retailers. Response by Napoleon Hotel There are two lifts to the rooms, and one of them worked perfectly. We had problems with a lift over the weekend, unfortunately our supplier, however, one of the best in the world, could not make the replacement until Monday. . It may be that there has been a brief shortage of information regarding the directions to reach the other elevator, that is in a hallway, that occurred just after the fault. But one of the two elevators was always available. The elevators have been replaced recently and the failure rate is minimal. I apologize for the inconvenience, but thanks to two lifts, this discomfort, the few times it happens, is usually very limited. As for the overall look of the hotel, I would ensure that we maintain continuously upgrading works and if we find signs of wear, they are always restored in a short time. I stayed there for 2 nights with wife and a 10 months old baby. Hotel is very closed to the Rome Termini Train Station (just 10 min walk) and metro station entrance is just infront of the hotel. "Horrible, very disappointed."
This hotel is not in a very good neighborhood. It is right in front of a subway entrance, which is a plus, however. The service here, though, is horrible. One instance involved me asking the concierge how to connect to the internet. After saying "your room number", I assumed he was trying to tell me that was what I used to log on so I nodded in acknowledgement. […] He said it again in a higher tone. I nodded again, and he yelled "YOUR ROOM NUMBER!". He was apparently asking me for my room number, but his tone did not indicate as such. This was a simple misunderstanding, but as someone who works customer service, I don't ever remember being taught that it is ok in any circumstances to raise your voice to a customer. After that incident, he would never greet me as I entered the hotel (but would other guests), which didn't seem a very adult thing to do. The only good thing about this hotel was the concierge who checked us in (not the same angry one). I did not catch his name, but he had a perfect command of English (I believe he may have been British) and was very helpful and polite. The rooms are very basic for a four star hotel. You are really only paying for the expensive looking sitting areas. I would not recommend this hotel after the horrible service and misleading room descriptions. Great place to stay in Central Rome. It is literally right outside one of the entrances to the Vittorio Emanuele metro station, which is itself just one stop or a few blocks from Termini train station. So, very easy to get to... Got a last-minute deal on this one from a website that specializes in that sort of reservation, but really, I would not have […] a problem paying full price here. Of all the "four star" hotels we stayed in throughout Italy, France, and The Netherlands on this trip, this one had the largest and nicest rooms. I think they gave us a slightly larger suite-type room with a chaise/extra bed in it, but even without that part, it would have been a great hotel room - quiet and well-maintained. Love the floor layout, too: from the entrance you go up a very tall flight of stairs to reach the hotel lobby with bar; from there, if you are homesick, you will appreciate the Americanized floor numbering for the rooms since you are now on floor 1, not 0. "Spartan hotel off the beaten path"
Hotel is located across from a small park and in the middle of a shopping district. During the day, vendors are setup to offer various items right on the street. Hotel is located to several local restaurants, and is about a half mile from the Colosseum. It is a longer walk to most of the tourist locations, although it has very easy access to the metro. […] Service at the hotel varied. We arrived early in the morning, and the front desk allowed us to check into one of our rooms about three hours early while we walked around the city. This was very much appreciated. In the evening, the front desk manager was extremely friendly, helping us to arrange a taxi to the airport in the morning and making a dinner reservation for us in the evening. Unfortunately, the impression of the service staff was ruined at check-out when a different front desk manager demanded the return of both room keys. My girlfriend couldn't find the second key, and it was a real issue. They even had security go up to the room and search the room for the missing key. We eventually found it, but not before my girlfriend and the desk manager exchanged words, and it was starting to get ugly. Again, it totally ruined my perception of the hotel staff, which is unfortunate, as up until then I had a positive impression. Don't think I would return to this hotel based on this experience.
