Major Construction & Lacking Service
This is the 3rd time we've stayed at The Carlton Hotel and this was the worst experience we've ever had here. The hotel was under MAJOR renovation and they didn't bother to let us know. So our entire stay we're walking through construction areas 15 feet from the breakfast area, on our way to the toilets and sharing two small lifts with the poor construction guys just trying to do their jobs. On top of that, the house keeping was terrible. They left our room service dinner from the night before just sitting on the table (they didn't give us a tray to put it outside the door when we were finished). They didn't replace the coffee cups we used, they didn't replace the laundry bags or the forms to fill out to get laundry done and they didn't refill the coffee area either. And all of this on top of the fact we told them not to bother making the beds. Their only job was to refill things & replace towels and they couldn't even do that properly. We were so disappointed with the Carlton Hotel!

Great visit to Edinburg
We spent 4 1/2 hours touring the castle. Be sure to get the audio guide. Lots of areas to visit. Be sure to visit the quarters where POWS of WWI and WWII were held. Very poignant history. Other highlights--Palace Holyrood and the Royal Yacht Brittania. Lots of smaller museums along the Royal Mile--especially liked the Children's Museum with lots of toys from older generations.Climb the 142 steps to the top of Cotton Hill Tower for a beautiful view of the town. TIP:If you buy a 2 day Hop On/ Hop Off bus ticket it includes admission to Castle, Palace and Royal Yacht. It is considerably cheaper than buying the individual admissions We found out too late. Two good places to eat--Castle Arms Pub on the Royal Mile between hotel and Castle and "Bellas", a very good Italian restaurant across the street from hotel.

perfect location
Perfect location in Edinburgh. You could walk to the Royal Mile, castle, Holyrood Palace, Princes St, train station and more. Even though remodeling was going on, the rooms were lovely. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Most HORRIBLE Hotel in Edinburgh
The hotel is undergoing a MAJOR remodel and they do not tell you when you book. The A/C did not work in our room. We were on the 5th floor, and there was scaffolding outside the building, so we could not even open our curtains for the view. There were no porters to help with out luggage; No concierge; no nothing except a hole-in-the-wall place to check in. The noise during the day at the front was horrendous. What a terrible place to spend your 1st trip to the beautiful city of Edinburgh!

We were very disappointed when we arrived as the entire hotel was under renovation however our rooms were not effected but there was no lobby at all and for the breakfast we had to go around the construction area to do the breakfast. Hotels.com should have informed earlier about this condition so we should have gotten some other place. Thx
