Great location - very close to train station. Service was excellent in the breeakfast area and Bar. Only con was rooms were too warm - setting of registers took 2 days to cool down with the windows open.Definitely stay their again

The time changed to daylight savings while we were staying at the hotel. We were from the US and no idea about when this happens in the UK. We missed our train as a result. The hotel is very close to what you to see in Edinburgh but this also comes at a price if not in Pounds in the overall age of the hotel rooms and especially the noise level. Our room faced North Bridge which the views were great but at 2am until 3am the noise level outside woke us every night we stayed. We arrived at 8am and check-in wasn't until 3pm. We went to see if they could hold our luggage while we explored the city and they said you can have your room now. What a great surprise after a long flight from the states. The room was very clean and the staff was very friendly and informative.

The hotel looked on the map to most convenient to Waverly train station, unfortunately the tourist office directs you in a 360 1/4 mile diversion. Upon traveling around Britain I had stayed in some very small rooms that lacked the American standard of cleanliness... this hotel is the exception! Hotel room was quite large, room was clean, friendly staff, excellent location, all around good experience! Upon arrival hotel staff was friendly and check in was quick and efficient. Staff was pleasant. Concierge was not well informed----sent us to a nearby restaurant that was closed! On the other hand, he did tell us about a hotel back door on lift level -4 which is an almost direct entrance to Waverley train station----a big plus!!!---- that I wished we had known about before we climbed the hill to North Bridge towing our luggage […] on our arrival! Future travelers should go to the Market St. exit from the station----not easy to find but the Scots are very friendly and helpful, so just ask for directions from anyone who looks like they are natives. Breakfast, with a 7 pound "special" voucher from the front desk was, by my standards, pretty bad----my husband thought it was o.k.! Our room was roomy, by European standards, but very "tired"----needs refurbishing--- bathroom was updated and adequate. Having arrived in Edinburgh from a London 5* hotel, I thought giving the Carlton 4*s is a stretch----all things considered, I would say 3*s. However, the location is great----around the corner from High Street (The Royal Mile). If we are lucky enough to go back to Edinburgh in our life-time (we are age 77 & 80) I might opt for other accommodations, but certainly in the same location. This hotel has a fabulous location for visitors. It's one-half block off the Royal Mile and close to the University, to Prince street and New Town. Just about all one would want to see is within walking distance. The room's are large, spacious, and very clean. The central aspect and rooms of the hotel are handi-cap accessible, but rooms "down the hall" […] have stairs. The Carlton is located in old-town and it was centrally located to everything in that area. Great for that. Service left some to be desired. Had trouble with connecting to their free wi-fi so called down to reception. They never answered. Went down in person and the receptionish was "too busy" to help me plus she said it was working just fine. Didn't […] care to hear anything about my not being able to get on. Also in the way of customer service, there was a fire drill in the middle of breakfast. Hustled us over to the Radisson where we stayed for 35-40 minutes. Never any info from the staff, but eventually just told to return to the hotel. The rooms, if you are on the street-side, are extremely noisy. they have single pane windows and it's like having the window open. Also the rooms are quite warm. There is only a down comforter--no sheet. So no way to adjust your heat with the covers and no adjustment in the room. Read more

We didn't have the best start to our trip. Both our suitcases decided on a different location to fly to. However, the Carlton staff guided us to a great store to pick up clothes and toiletries and helped us with our airline finding our bags. Mike, the concierge, was invaluable and the reception staff went out of their way. On top of that the hotel breakfast […] was delicious and the location right off the Royal Mile is direct to all the must see attractions and bus and train service as well as airport express. This was a great hotel. It was just off the Royal Mile and you have access to everything that you need. The room has wi-fi, and was roomier than some hotel rooms that I have been in, in London and Rome. The gym and sauna area were great for the end of the day workout or swim. Five minute walk from train station. We had two rooms for three of us. Nice morning breakfast buffet but all hotels we stayed in over two weeks had exactly the same food on their buffets throughout the UK. Reception desk staff were superb and friendly.
