"lovely B&B in west end of Edinburough"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 5, 2012
Delightful accommodations. Derek is friendly and very helpful. Very pleased and would stay again. Extremely clean. Extremely quiet. Breakfasts are great. We did not eat dinner there although it is an option. Derek has two cats and those with cat allergies should not stay here. If you have difficulty with walking stairs, this would not be a good choice and a hotel with elevator would be preferred. The cats are not in any of the visitors rooms and are not obtrusive in any way. Bedding is wonderful. About a 15 minute walk to the castle, the water of Leigh, the modern art galleries and most of the central areas of New Town.
"Wedding Trip"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on May 4, 2012
The room was compact but had absolutely everything you needed to live for a year! Very convenient. The bed was a little too hard, but other than that everything was fine, Parking was the only awkward thing, the nearest spaces to leave for long term were about a mile away, but it was a pleasant walk and the Apartment was close enough to all the major sights for us to walk to and not detract from our stay. Great value. Id stay again.

"great location, very good everything else"
The hotel has a great location right between old and new towns off the royal mile. The staff was very good and did their best to accommodate us for an early check-in after our international flight. The rooms are nice and a clean, and the hotel has all the amenities. My only complaint (and it's a small one) was that wireless internet access isn't included […] in the rooms. The included breakfast buffet was fine but nothing special. Read more
"Spring in Edinburgh"
The Carleton is a very nice hotel. The rooms were nice (although dimly lit), bathrooms were nice and it is really convenient to everything in Edinburgh. My only complaint would be the upkeep of some of the common areas. If I ran the hotel I would change out the elevator interiors (they are worn, dirty and chipped) and I would get the crew from Marriott […] in to instruct on floor cleaning and the like (an example would be the grime/crid behing the doorstoops near the elevators on the 0 floor). I realize this sounds picky, but there are all sorts of similar spots in the gym (which is huge) and it discourages people like me from wanting to use other hotel services (restaurant for example). Otherwise the staff was great and the hotel was really convenient. Read more
"Great choice"
Barcelo is in a great location. Easy walk to several locations. The hotel has a great ambiance and friendly staff. The room was comfortable and spacious. The breakfast buffet was a great way to start the day. And they make great hot chocolate!
"Great people, Beautiful hotel"
The hotel was great and everyone that we met here was wonderful. The only down side was that the parking is not attached to the hotel so we were not sure where to go when we got into Edinburgh. My advise is to pull up in front of the hotel in the bus lane and run in and ask about the parking. Other then that it was a great hotel. I hope to go back some […] day soon and would definitely recommend it to my friends. The location is wonderful as well. Read more
"right in the heart of Edinburg"
very nice place to sta to see the Royal mile
"Barcelo Carlton Edinburgh: Perfect location"
Located half a block off the Royal Mile and across the North Bridge from Waverley Station. Staff was friendly and helpful. Large comfortable room. Our room at the front of the hotel was noisy because of it's location on the street. If you want quiet, ask for a room in the back.
"great location"
Very close to the city center & the royal mile, excellent rooms. Don't bring a car if you can avoid it; no valet service & parking is extremely difficult.
"Are You Kidding Me??!!"
What were the reviewers thinking that rated this place highly?? It is literally RIGHT on top of the train station. The trains go under the hotel - It is LOUD. The bed is uncomfortable and the room is too hot, even with the windows open. The concierge staff were unhelpful and barely spoke English. The sole positive experience here is the location. It […] is close to everything. Parking is a 10 minute walk and costs 30pounds per night! Read more
"Edinburgh June"
The hotel location is ideal for seeing the Royal mile of Edinburgh. The hotel is clean but worn. The entry is very nice but the hotel floors show worn carpet and an overall updating would be beneficial. The staff would clean up around you while eating breakfast which rushed us through a good breakfast, they seemed helpful for the most part some very […] others not. Wifi should be available throughout hotel but was not, we had to get a code that lasted 30 minutes and then reboot again no reason for the reboot. Read more
Perfect location!
"Barcelo Carlton - center of Edinburgh"
Were able to get a very reasonable rate on this excellent hotel next to the Royal Mile in the center of beautiful Edinburgh. The hotel rooms were clean and spacious and there is a very nice restaurant and bar, but there are so many options available within easy walking distance it is hard to stay in the hotel. Parking was about three blocks away but […] it was an easy walk Read more
"Great Location"
This hotel is in a great location for the trains, buses and walking to sightsee. The hotel is very nice and the staff was friendly. They let us store our bags when we arrived early. We would stay again.

"Perfect Location, Walkable to Everything"
The hotel was in the perfect location. In any direction you turn, you were 10 minutes walk from The Castle, New Town/Princes Street, Holyrood Park, Grassmarket Street, etc. It's practicallynext door to Waverly Train Station and it also has a convenient "secret" enterance on Market Street so you dont' have to walk up the large hill on Cockburn Street. […] The room itself was average size by UK standards and in good shape. The chair in the room was a bit worn but everything else was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was updated and roomy. We called the front desk a few times for small things and they were very prompt to respond. I would highly recommend this hotel. Read more
"Great location, louder than expected"
My husband and I stayed for 5 nights at the hotel leading up to Christmas. Overall, the hotel was clean and comfortable, the bathroom shower fantastic, and the staff helpful. The only downside was the noise from the street. On other reviews we read that it could be loud as the pubs let out, but frankly thought we'd still be up at that time. Unfortunately, […] although the Royal Mile view we had from our room was lovely, it also put us directly above a taxi rank, which was used by loud groups of people leaving the late-night nightclubs until 5 am most nights. If you're a light sleeper, be sure to request a room toward the back of the hotel - as we will next time we stay here. Read more
"Barcelo Edinburgh Carlton"
I found this to be an excellent hotel. The room was great. The breakfast buffet was wonderful with so many choices. The sauna downstairs was really nice to use, as was the steam room and swimming pool. I would definitely stay here again. The location was superb. The staff was professional and overall my experience was quite positive.
"The room was "tired""
The bathroom was up to date, but the room was definitely in need of a make over. The fabric on the chair was worn, and wallpaper had been obviously patched n places. We missed ourprepaid breakfast due to incorrect informaion at the main desk. They gave us a sack lunch, which certainly wasn't worth the extra hotel fees we paid to include breakfast.
"Edinburgh Barcelo"
Close walking distance to Edinburgh Castle, Palace at Holyrood, food, shopping
"LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!"
Fabulous location, in the heart of the city! near to an ATM, drug store, convenience store, oodles of restaurtants (nice ones and fast food) a Starbucks, the Royal Mile and tons of souvenier shops. The room was comfortable and the fridge came in handy. Only complaint; a hotel of this standard should have FREE wifi!! also, a hint= ask for a room in the […] back as the front faces a popular street where the bars let out lots of noisy revelers all hours of the night! "Hard to explain"
On the surface it looks like an amazing hotel. It's beautiful and very well located. However our complaints were minor I suppose except for the water being yellow. Filled up the bath and it was yellow. The front desk blew it off and said it was like that everywhere in Edinburgh but I have my doubts. Also no A/C. Not a big deal unless you're traveling […] in the summer. We requested a fan. Also concierge was not very helpful. Seemed to discourage us going anywhere saying it was too far. We ignored his advice and didn't find it far at all. Best tip I can give you is if you stay on a weekend it is very loud until about 4am. Go to bed drunk and you'll have no trouble sleeping. During the week it was quiet enough though Read more
"Outstanding Service From Top to Bottom!"
We stayed at The Barceló Edinburgh Carlton Hotel Sept 9-11th 2009 Room 505. The Concierge Desk and the entire hotel was staffed with wonderful people. Our room was booked for 2, but was HUGE! It had 2 twin beds pushed together and another twin. Great linens and comfortable bed. Closet, ironing board, dresser space. Frig & hot water kettle tea bags & […] coffee in room. Cup of tea and a great big tub (and shower) was great after a long day of walking. Internet is additional. Not a great view, but we could see the castle! Room service quoted ten minutes for our breakfast. Called back in six to apologize for the delay, it would be another ten minutes. The food arrived in 13 minutes from when I ordered. Amazing service! Bar upstairs from lobby, wonderful location off the Royal Mile. Five minute walk to Waverly Station to take the train or to Waverly Bridge to catch tour busses. I must tell you about Mike & Michael at the Concierge desk. Two great guys who will store your luggage (and gladly pull it back out if you need something), give directions, help print your boarding pass, recommend a restaurant and even make sure there was extra milk in my frig for my evening cup of tea! Never did I feel that I had asked them too much. And they were always pleasantly surprised when we tipped them. Two great guys that like their jobs! Michael even tried to find a driver for the day for us when our rental car was given away. Should have 5 stars! Read more
"Lovely hotel in Edinburgh City centre"
We arrived early & were able to check in before 2pm which was great. Twin rooms are rather small & the beds were pushed right up against each other. The room also got stuffy during the night due to not being able to open the window along with the heat from the mini bar. There was a fan but it was too noisy. Rooms were clean & hotel bar is very […] plush with a nice drinks & food menu. Great location & lovely views of the city. All in all, a pleasant place to stay. Read more
"Comfy Hotel"
loved the gym facilities
"not impressed"
I have stayed in hundreds of hotels much cheaper than this and they have been just as nice so not worth the extra money.
"Not impressed"
The location was excellent and at a quick glance the room was OK, but on closer inspection there were a few tatty and broken fittings. the air conditioning was not working and the fan provided simply moved the warm air around. Most of the staff were very helpful and pleasant with the exception of one of the reception staff who when we complained of […] an overcharge on our room (We were charged for parking even though we travelled by train),seemed to think that we were idiots and spoke to us as such. "Defo go back"
Great location, very central..Staff very helpful, willing to cater to our needs,eg bringing ice buckets and cereal bowls to the room,at any hour!! Five min walk from princes st etc... Hotel restaurant bit pricey,as was the bar, except from the odd special offer eg 2 for 1 on cocktails...Defo would go back!!
"Great Location"
We stayed for 3-nights and enjoyed every bit of our stay. Great location for shopping, the Edinburgh castle, museums, restaurants, and some interesting street entertainment. The rooms are clean and reasonably sized with the exception of the twin rooms where the beds were only 6-inches apart. No Parking. Not easy at all to get to from the train station, […] although it is quite close. Read more
"Great room with one small complaint"
Room was very comfortable but there wasn't any chest of draws (bureau) to put your clothes into. Other than that we loved our stay at the hotel. Very convenient to the Royal Mile and all of the major attractions. Edinburgh is a great city to visit.
"Excellent base in Edinburgh for Tourists"
After several trips to Edinburgh, using dated B&B accommodation, I decided to try an Hotel whilst attending my son's graduation from Ed. University. This hotel was idealy situated, the staff were pleasant and willing to help, (with one exception), communication was difficult at times but not a problem. Housekeeping was not contactable, but the very […] helpful staff at the reception sorted this. Very sparing with the complimentary toiletries/ tea/ coffee/milk but clean and comfortable stay. Leisure facilities not used. Rating: 7/10 Read more

"barcelo edinburgh"
Lovely hotel great breakfast. Only downfall is the rooms are not very soundproof. The people in the room above was so noisy also even people walking pass could be heard.
"Excellent service."
The consiergue was extremely helpful when recommending restaurants and helping to get reservations even late at night, "he even walked us to the restaurant". Very handy location, in a city that you should not miss.
"Barcelo Edinburgh Carlton"
Unbelievable value for this hotel, the location was great and the quality and cleanliness of the hotel and staff was second to none, definately stay there again!
"Carlton Hotel - central Edinburgh"
Great position, just off the Royal mile and easy walking distance to anywhere in the city centre. Staff friendly and very helpful. Good breakfast selection and quality ok. Worth a try.
Great location very central to tourist areas. Changing rooms in the leisure suite very grubby an in need of some money spent. Room nice and clean and more importantly comfortable.
"close to castle"
we stayed in this hotel when we got married so wanted to stay here again.our room was nice but were asked to move because of a leaking pipe under our bath.we moved to a different room but the heating didnt work so our room was cold.breakfast was lovely with a large selection to choose from and the staff were friendly.

Great location, room not great, definitely not 4 star and I travel a lot. Luke warm water, not as clean as I would like. Breakfast was good but had to queue
"Barcelo edinburgh carlton"
Perfect location across the road from Waverley station. Walk out of station onto Market Street exit, turn left and 50 metres up the road on the RHS there is a blue door which is the rear entrance to the hotel health club. You can then take the lift to the hotel reception. This saves you a long uphill walk or taking a taxi. Hotel is 5 minutes walk from […] Princess Street and right next to the Royal Mile. Hotel Reception very nice but bedroom dated and in need of an undate and lick of paint. Bathroom ok. Asked for double bed but was 2 single beds pushed together which kept moving apart. Breakfast nice, and plenty of choice but staff run off their feet and waited 15 minutes for coffee. Health club ok but swimming pool quite small and very cool. Sauna, steam room and jacuzzi nice. This was the fourth time I have stayed in this hotel. It is so central for the shops, theatre, historic landmarks - everything is within walking distance. The rooms, staff, and facilities are all superb. I will definately be back

"the room i was in was awful"
1. thin - single glazed windows was making it impossible for me and my eldery mother to sleep. noise from outside was extremely awful from music from accross the street hotel, queue at taxi ranks, buses, police/ambulance cars in patrol, and people outside the hotel across from room 326 who gathered on regularly basis to go somewhere as a group (like […] pub crawl crowd as such) 2. toilet bin was full already/hasnt been cleaned/emptied 3. during breakfast, male waitress gave us a pot without top as he said he run out of ONE and he said that he will get us another pot if that one got cold soon. he never came back to check with us and I had to ask a female waitress to get us another one. the same male waitress gave a new pot to us but made a comment as to why we asked for another one if we had tea already on our cup as if he has forgotten about the missing pot top already. it's was a very poor customer service Read more
"The Barcelo Carlton Hotel in Edinburgh"
is in a great location, very well laid out and breakfast is excellent. However, plesae get the revolving front door and main entrance fixed and more importantly find some way of regulating the heating in the room. "Carlton Hotel Edinburgh on the Royal Mile"
This hotel is very central to everything in the wonderful city of Edinburgh. They are so polite & helpful at the reception desk. We asked to be moved from room 237 as the aircon vents were noisy during the night and they couldn't be more helpful. So we would recommend this hotel for your next stay in Edinburgh and we will be back.
"Barcelo, Edinburgh."
Booked for one night only & all the staff were very pleasant. Asked to have a room change because didn't like the view and this was done poste haste. I would go back there again. Also the location was excellent for all the sights in Edinburgh.
