This hotel clearly was a 5 star in the past but the bloom is off the rose. It felt like going back in time to a 5 star hotel of the 60-70's. We had difficulty communicating with the concierge . We felt they are totally out of date and almost 90% of the information given to us by then were wrong by giving us wrong timings for the places we ask for .. or for instance they gave us the price list of car rentals of 2010 which prices were totally different . The room service is very poor , We […] had to speak to the guest relations to translate to them our order because they have never got us the order we specifically asked for . By Taxi to puerto banus it is almost a 10 minute drive where other hotels are located in or next to puerto banus . The staff either have to be trained or changed , but the pool is not bad . The best way to describe the Melia Don Pepe in Marbella is the ultimate in costumer service. The facilities were beautiful and well maintain. We got to the Don Pepe and tried to check in. The front desk attendants were so unbelievably rude, I tried to "kill em with kindness" and they because indifferent to us and all the others who tried to check in. We asked for nearby shopping places and offered no help. Finally a busboy said to go to two random places. Later we found out the entire city […] of Puerto Banus had excellent shopping and the hotel even had guides at the front as to this shopping. The reception attendants could have easily provided us with this and solved our questions in 30 seconds. They are deliberately useless and were chatting with each other. We really loved our stay in Marbella. We only wished there was more staff coming around to the guests by the pool. Sometimes it seemed we had to wait an hour to get drinks. Also, no beach chairs were available on the beach front right in front of the hotel though there were rentals a little further down. Staff worked very hard to provide us with a pleasant stay . We arrived 3 hours early for check in and the desk was busy but they still took the time to find us 2 rooms close to each other. Pool guys worked hard fetching cushions ,towels,parasols and moving sun beds for everyone. We had a sea view room with a balcony and felt it was very small . This was a 3 night 'child free' treat, we had a deluxe sea view room on the 3 rd floor, which was lovely (large twin beds pushed together). There were clarins toiletries in the bathroom, and as a special treat, I called the hotel a few days earlier and pre booked the 'romantic package'. On arrival however the romantic package hadn't been fully implemented, […] just the Rose petals on the bed and around the bath, and bath crystals. I then had to spoil the surprise to my husband, by calling down to have the champagne and strawberries sent to the room, they came quickly, but still no candles, which I called down again for when we came in from dinner. This didn't spoil our stay at the hotel, it was lovely really. When I mentioned my 'disappointment' to reception the next day, it was really well handled, and I was offered free use of one of the Balinese beds by the pool for a day, worth over 100 euros, I couldn't use this, as we were out all the next day, so I asked for a late check out on our last day instead, and this was accommodated.The breakfast buffet here was superb, everything you could want, the pool area was nice and the pool attendants were great for sorting out umbrellas and beds wherever you wanted. We went out to eat on 2 evenings, however the 1 st night we had a light bite to eat at cappuccino beach bar/restaurant by the sea, which was very nice,quick service. There is plenty of shops/ places to eat either side of the hotel on the beach side, and it's 20mins to Marbella Read more

The Gran Melia Don Pepe must just trade off it's name. It is totally run down, not what you would expect of a 5 star hotel. I have stayed in better rooms in a 3 star hotel. The king bed as they advertise is two singles pushed together - so be aware - you fall down the middle. My daughter had a single sofa bed which was filthy and when open you cannot […] access the balcony as the rom is so small. The bathroom is so small two people cannot fit into it at the same time. The shower was mouldy and the fixings were falling off the bathrrom wall! The staff are so rude and do not want to do anything to help whatsoever, once you have pre-paid - they couldn't care less. The food is a complete rip off - 3 cheese and ham toasties and 3 soft drinks at lunch time - 84 Euros and it isn't even that good - a stroll down the road for 2 mins - it costs just 12 Euros! Iron and ironing board - these are not available until 6pm every night and you are allowed them for 1 hour - what a complete joke!! They have a piano bar which is more or less empty each night, my husbnad and I just wanted one drink before going to bed, but no children allowed after 8pm!
