Pillows were stiff. Light switches were very confusing for Americans and did not have a US outlet. They upgraded us to a room with a castle view, tiny windows but gorgeous.

This was a lovely hotel, with a great location and views. Despite renovations going on, we did not feel at all inconvenienced. Rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the bathroom especially was first-rate. We forgot to hang the do-no-disturb sign before we went to bed, and housekeeping came around at 8:15 both mornings. I keep trying to recall some flaw in our recent stay but there was none -- the room was by far the best we had in Scotland -- the view was perfect, the service was superb, and the location was in walking distance from the sights. There are some nits -- breakfast was not included in our rate and its cost was too high and out top floor room had small […] windows because they were dormers but these are not major issues. The hotel is on the backside of the castle so it is about 10-15 minute walk to the castle entrance and a bit further to most sites in the old town. And while this hotel is great it is proportionally expensive. But these are quibbles, overall, if you can afford this hotel you should consider booking it. Read more

We all enjoyed our stay immensely - great room, great view, concierge service was excellent as was breakfast. Room was always cleaned and maintained well. The provision of taxi service and access to the pool at the Scotsman was great - having a pool was a key factor in booking. Only two negatives: an early morning fire alarm (obviously a short circuit […] as part of the ongoing upgrade) was poorly explained and I had to ask a fire officer to explain to my 8 year old daughter that it was safe and "okay" no one else did; Andrew at breakfast was just too much, intrusive and verging on extremely annoying - all the other staff were great. Even though the hotel was undergoing renovations, we hardly noticed the workers. This hotel is built from beautiful red stone. The people at the front desk and the concierge are very friendly and eager to help. We had reserved a room with a queen bed but upon our arrival were upgraded to a king bed. What a nice surprise that was! Our room was spacious […] and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was included and the maitre D was always very welcoming and new our names after the first day. I only have two main complaints: one, I asked for a room closer to a lift because of bad knees but intead found myself traversing the longest corridor I have seen in some time. The other main issue I take with hotels that charge as much as a Hilton especially a grand hotel like the Caledonian, is the extreme cost of wi-fiinternet access! That many pounds? […] Really? Isn't it enough that the charges should cover what is essentially a month's worth of wi-fi access back home for one day at the hotel? Come on! Ludicrous in this wi-fi global connection-near-necessary age! Other than that, a lovely and historic hotel with kind and helpful staff. A brisk walk along main drag takes you to Waverly Station and the tourist bus. Read more

Great location - close top Edinburgh Castle, tourist attractions, and shops. Reception staff at check-in were not friendly. Concierge staff were very helpful and friendly. Rooms were small and cramped. Bathroom clean but small. Overall, al little overpriced despite the location.

This hotel is in probably the best location in Edinburgh, across the street from the Edinburgh Castle grounds. Easy access to everything in Edinburgh. We learned that the hotel is going to be converted into a super luxury property, probably too expensive for most tourists. So go while you still can.

This place rules. It's a beautiful historic building with great views of the castle. I feel the pool and hot tub area could be updated, but it was quite relaxing soaking while looking at Edinburgh Castle. The staff were very helpful and polite. I highly recommend this hotel.

We had a wonderful time at the Caledonian. The rooms are nice with high ceilings and good lighting. The bathrooms are nice and big and the towels are amazing for hotel towels. The staff is very professional and accomadating. There was a large group staying at the hotel with older children that pretty much took over the lobby area. They also brought […] in their own food which seemed rather presumptious but the staff handled all of this with grace. The location makes it ideal for walking and public transportation. One of the Caledonian employees was considered the expert on the local buses and indeed he was! He could tell us which bus to take and where to catch it without hesitating. He got us to Glasgow and Rosslyn Chapel without a problem. I will be going back to the Caldonian for certain. Read more

The hotel was done to a high quality and the communal areas were very nice. The rooms were a little on the small size but nice and clean. I'm a little disappointed that I contacted the hotel before we arrived to make them aware we would be there to celebrate a birthday and asked if they would be able to get me some balloons or anything to make it special. […] They never came back to me and it was not mentioned at all when I checked in.The soft drinks in the hotel were very expensive and given how small the rooms were we did pay a lot for our stay. This is one of the great historic hotels in Edinburgh and it has been very well restored as well as modernised. It is let down by serving breakfast in a cramped cafe area with (short) queues both to get a table and then for the hot food buffet, no one served coffee until chased and food had run out in much of the cold part of the buffet. The staff were exceptionally pleasant and helpful. The hotel is beautiful. The only criticism is that the room could have been cleaner. There was a hair slide from a previous resident under the bed. Also a mark on one of the dressing gowns.. these did not detract from the stay.
