Paper-thin walls: could clearly hear conversations in adjoining rooms, coughing, toilets flushing, doors shutting constantly. Large group of intoxicated individuals standing in hallway at 2am loudly conversing about "let's go swimming", etc for over 30minutes before I finally went to the door and told them to pipe down. Didn't want anything fancy, just wanted to sleep here on our way thru. Had doubts about the cleanliness, but it was acceptable. And I've seen parking lots at abandoned buildings in better shape than this one. But we just wanted a safe place to stay for a night. Did not spend much time here. Just got in, got out, and got what we expected.

Very nice room, but no place to plug in a laptop while sitting at the desk area. Should be a plug-in on top of desk. Had to sit on the bed and plug in on the night stand.

Very pleasant at check in. Were remodeling the wing that we stayed on. It was ok as they finished work on our floor around 6 pm. Later that night the footsteps over head sounded like the person walking was going to come through the ceiling. Not sure if it was more remodeling on an upper floor or if the hotel has terrible sound proofing.

Rick, the van shuttle driver was very nice and helpful. We were there for 2 nights for my Mother's surgery. She had an outpatient procedure at the University of Iowa on Friday 4-19-13 and we came back that same day. When they had their Manager "meal" at five pm it was like they had their regulars, or homeless eating in line. My wife and I spent the night before a doctor's apt. The motel and room were good. The wifi was great and easy to use. The meals were good. I think the only knocks we had were not enough snack machines, the cable went in and out and the bed was below average. But for what we needed, it was a good value.

The constant cigarette smoke overshadowed any good values the place might have had. The property lodges a large proportion of what appear to be Medicaid patients visiting the university hospital. And a significant portion of those people seem to be smokers. So people would congregate outside of every exterior door to smoke. You could not enter or leave […] the building without going through a guantlette of nicotene addicts puffing around the doors. They would prop the doors open to get some heat, and the smoke would billow into the building filling the hallways and often our room. If we opened the window, the smoke would come in the window. There was no escaping the smoke. The facility promotes itself as 100% smoke free, but the practical reality is that is not the case. Also, the room key cards continuously went blank and we could not get into the room without going to the front desk. The staff kept feeding us a lie about the cards being wiped clean by "electronics" but that is bull. We know they were setting a time limit on the card activation, and it created a considerable inconvenience for us every time we returned to the room. Read more

My only issue with the stay at the Heartland Inn was that i was supposed to be in a non-smoking room, but the room reeked of RECENT cigarette smoke. I don't know if the cleaning crew was smoking in the room or it came in through the vents ffrom next door, but it was initially bad. Other than that, the room was outstanding!

I understand that I was there for the big IA/NE game, but I did not appreciate the drunks running up and down the 3rd floor hall @ 2:00am singing and being completely stupid for over a 1/2 hour. They also serve breakfast. It's economical. It's not the fanciest place to stay, but the staff is friendly and obviously knows many of the guests who have family in the university hospital nearby. They all seem to show genuine care and concern.

The motel is dated but clean. It is located on a very busy street close to the university so it's convenient from that standpoint. Overall i would have given the room a higher rating but the beds were extremely soft to the point of being uncomfortable, not a good thing for a good nights sleep after a long drive to get there.

The Heartland is close to the campus, but that is about the only thing in its favor. The walls were paper thin, noise level extremely high. The mattresses were rock hard, as were the pillows. The linens were threadbare. My husband and I were traveling with our two children, and we all were annoyed by the smokers standing just outside our windows near […] two of the exit doors.
