Hotel Highland Downtown/UAB, Ascend Collection Hotel - Birmingham

I had wonderful and too short stay at the Hotel Highland. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good, and there are several terrific restaurants within a block or two. It's a very convenient location for people visiting UAB, the hospitals, and downtown Birmingham. I'll stay at Hotel Highland again.

It was great. The manager and the front dest personnel were very friendly. They make me feel welcome. The room was very clean (thank you Wanda) and the Hotel's location was excellent. It is located close to a lot of restaurants and coffee shops. I'll be back.

Fun neighborhood with excellent restaurants and cafes. The hotel includes a decent continental breakfast with lots of choices. Hotel is right in the heart of activity.

This older, charming hotel has been well maintained and is lovely in its decorations/furniture. The location is very good - central. The only suggestion we make is to offer softer mattresses - both of us tossed and turned all night trying to get comfortable on the very firm mattress.

Could be a good find in a convenient location, but it's honestly just ok. The air condition was not fully functioning and there were also moldy spots where the tub met the shower wall. We were not there long so this was manageable. With its downfalls, the staff was more than accommodating and very helpful.

Overall, the hotel was OK. The location was great. However, my overnight stay was NOT GOOD at all. The bed mattress was extremely hard and unforgiving. I'm use to firm beds, but this bed was BEYOUND firm. It felt as if I was sleeping on a board instead of a mattress. My husband wound up staying in the hospital two days longer than we had reservations at the hotel. Very nice stay, love the area. Close to UAB where we had a doctors appt. Room was very nice & clean. Beds very comfortable!! One thing you could change...put a larger coffee pot in the room. The Hotel Highland remains my favorite hotel in Birmingham. The hotel is clean, staff efficient and friendly. My room had a wonderful view of Vulcan and Red Mt. Five Points has really gone down hill but the the Highlands Bar and Grill right down the street it is still a wonderful location.

Sign said parking behind the hotel, circled the block twice to only find out there was no self parking, as informed by the overly cheery reception desk. Bad: The girl working the front desk during the day left a little bit to be desired in the friendliness department. And the parking situation is only okay. It's nice to have the valet service, but they only have 1 guy working at a time, and they only have 2 spots on a busy street in front of the hotel. bad first impression. staff not very professional, and gave us some very bad tips about getting cabs. a sort of run down bar right in the lobby that was not open. bad lobby desk with what looked like the pantry in my first apt in the back. beat up room, very bad bathroom.
