I was at the hotel since I had a wedding to attend in the area about a half mile away. However, just getting to the hotel was an issue because the street is one-way and there was construction on one of the major streets causing detours. It took me 40 minutes just to get in a square so I could get to the front of the hotel. Parking is a problem in the […] area because almost everywhere it is only 1 hour for parking and it is enforced 24/7. You will have to walk a ways just to find parking that is not an hour. I was lucky that I booked for Saturday night because some areas allow free parking after 6 p.m. from Saturday night through Sunday. There is no elevator in this 4 story hotel. They gave me a room on the 4th floor and I was tired walking up and down the stairs. They didn't have any lower floors available. Breakfast was only served until 10 a.m. I went down on Sunday morning around 10:20 a.m. and it was closed and didn't see the sign until too late. Overall we were impressed with the image and location of the hotel. Street parking was easy to find around the hotel and there is plenty to do in the area. Being situated in the middle of downtown and close to the wharf offered a lot of options for entertainment and food.

the staff was soo helpful and efficient. the hotel is historic and well kept. A nice break from the "cookie cutter" corporate hotels. A wonderful stay. our room overlooked the street and that got a bit noisy, but the hotel supplies ear plugs on the nightstand and it is time to put new mattresses in. Locations could not be better! lovely stay.

We loved the charm of this older hotel. It is conveniently located in the heart of downtown, perfect for the Tuesday street fair which we loved. Rooms are small, but comfortable and clean. Elevator does not operate, so you do have to use the stairs, however the bellman is readily available to carry bags. Staff was very courteous and friendly. Breakfast was delicious. My knee problem acted up because of the stairs but I will definitely come back when the elevator is installed. Lovely feeling of graciousness from the past, beautiful property.

This hotel has a great location. My husband and I stayed here for one night. The individual who checked us in was pleasant and helpful. We did not mind that there were no elevators. A few flights of stairs are beneficial to the health. Overall it was a nice place and an even better price.

The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and went out of their way to make sure our stay was comfortable. The room was very small but it was clean, comfortable, and had all of the basic necessities. We liked the fact that the hotel was conveniently located to restaurants but there was no on-site parking. The walls and doors were also fairly "thin" […] which meant you can clearly hear conversations held in the hallway. Unfortunately, the occupants above use were fairly active at night and the early morning (e.g. they woke us up when they left their room at 1:30 am and we could hear their entire conversation as they walled pass our room). They were very quiet upon their return and we think the hotel staff at the front desk must have said something to them. Overall, it was a pleasant stay and the quality of service was exceptional. The hotel was great in every aspect: location, cost, value...The only "issue" was that they have an elevator but it's not working right now. We were on the fourth floor. Thankfully we're in good enough shape so it wasn't a big deal but if you have a difficult time getting around this might be challenging for you. The elevator does not work, the stairs are over the rooms. All night long people stomping up and down the stairs. 2 of the worst nights sleep. No parking at all, they offer valet of course for 17.00 a day. It was too far from beach so no walking. It was in nice little townish type of area. coffee and food close but I wont stay here again.

I came for a conference two blocks away. Yes you can hear through the walls a bit, you have to use the stairs but it is an OLD Victorian hotel. Super convenient walking location, great price, clean and comfy. Good wifi, free breakfast. I will stay here for next year's conference again.

The front desk staff, afternoon and morning, could not have been nicer or more accommodating. It was my birthday, and they both made a special fuss over me. It was lovely. The breakfast was fine, but I would request that you add a protein item or two to the menu. I am diabetic, and there was very little that I could eat safely. Just some cheese and/or […] boiled eggs would have made all the difference. But over all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and look forward to our next visit. The hotel was right downtown and it was easy to walk to shops and restaurants. Not a very restful night - we could hear people in rooms all around us, in the hallway and outside all night. Staff were friendly and helpful. Had to pay $17 for valet parking or pay to park a few blocks away at a public lot. It was a cute hotel, styled after the Victorian era. The elevator does not work, which wasn't a problem for us, but there were some elderly couples there who didn't want to carry their luggage up 3 flights of stairs. The Hotel was okay, historic building. The hotels.com website does not list the fact that the existing elevator does not work. The Moonstonehotels.com website does. This hotel should refresh their listing of amenities on this website to include that the elevator does not work. Difficulty in walking up and down the stairs with physical challenges. First, this hotel is in the prime location....you can walk everywhere and hit the theater and incredible restaurants. The hotel itself was built in the early 1900s. When we walked in we felt like we were instantly transported back to that era. They have kept the building in perfect condition. We had a basic king room and the room was all bed and beautiful […] hand carved armour with a very small tv inside...but we enjoyed the simplicity and beauty of the room. The bathroom had marble flooring and all the necessities you needed. The room came w/a free continental breakfast which was very nicely prepared and set up. When we checked out about an hour or so later I received a phone call from the front desk to inform me that I had left my jacket in the room. I told her I would not be back in the area til the end of the month and she stated that they would hold it for me. Now I dont know about you...but I know I have left things behind before and have called places looking to see if they had found these items and every hotel has said...NO, SORRY WE COULDNT FIND IT.....to me this is incredible and it says a lot to me about the staff and the business itself. :) I would HIGHLY recommend The Monterey! this hotel is in the heart of downtown Monterey. Walking distance to a lot of restaurants and water & a pretty close drive to nearby Pacific Grove, Spanish Bay, and Pebble Beach. This is an older hotel kept in good condition . It does not have many of the modern amenities in the basic rooms (ie coffee maker, newer tv, etc). If staying in a smaller room […] is not appealing to you, but you want to stay somewhere with a lot of character definitely reserve their suite. They are very expansive, with fire place, coffee maker, wet bar, and fridge. One note of caution is they do not have an elevator. So walking up flights of stairs is required.
