Hotel Aitana - Oaxaca

Wonderful location on a hill overlooking the Centro of Oaxaca. Near the museums, great restaurants, and sights. They had a flavorful, traditional breakfast for us each morning. The staff was friendly and helpful with setting up a rental car to visit surrounding sights/sites. Gracias.

We had a relaxing time in Oaxaca with our stay at Hotel Aitana. It is located up on a hill overlooking the zocalo and centro of Oaxaca. Rooms were spacious with ceiling fans only, so on hotter days it is best spent in the cooler courtyard. Breakfast each morning was an added plus and the support from the staff was perfect.

The old colonial building that houses this hotel is beautiful. The king size bed in our room was extremely comfortable. My problem with our room was the tub. I think it would be very dangerous for many people to get in and out of because it is very high. The should provide a step or a stool. Also, it was difficult to control the water temperature, we'd […] get all hot or all cold, finding warm was difficult. The tub also felt like an acrylic tub placed over an older tub. Anyone with balance issues might also have a hard time using it. The breakfast in the morning was not very good. It had been warming for a couple hours when we got to it and the pancakes were stone cold. The chilaquiles were tasteless. This hotel is located on a very noisy street with a lot of bus traffic. This hotel could be much better with some more attention to details. There are lots of nice places to stay in Oaxaca, i would probably choose a different hotel the next time. Read more

I visit Oaxaca often, but I always stay with my family about 1 hr out of the city. I stayed at Aitana because I wanted to explore the city center without having to travel every day back to my grandmother's house. As a student and explorer, I would say that this hotel has a great location, service, and is extremely comfortable. Santo Domingo, El Zocalo, […] El Llano, La Soledad are all a walking distance away. The room was kind of dusty but overall it was very clean. I felt extremely safe in the hotel, especially because the staff was so helpful. I would definitely stay here again. Busses, taxis, and cars pass by ALOT but the noise level inside the hotel is NOT a problem at all. The hotel is very serene and it just feels peaceful and relaxing. Neither my wife or I have a great working knowledge of the Spanish language, to put it mildly. The Hotel Aitana has many skilled English speakers, and not once did we feel at a language disadvantage. I thought the hotel was great. We had a rental car and the staff helped by parking at a "pensione" across the street for 50 pesos. Staff was friendly and helpful. We passed on the breakfast thinking we wanted some local desayuno. We ultimately found a place, but it was harder than expected since it was Sunday. So it shows how Oaxaca still has a "small […] town" atmosphere. That wasn't the case in Mexico City and at other developed touristic places. Anyways, the rooms were quaint and had an old Mexican charm. I think the 3 stars is a good rating for the accommodations, but I believe on service and staff friendliness it could deserve a 4-star rating. Overall, our experience at Hotel Aitana was great. The staff was very kind and helpful. Juanita was a great source of information if you wanted to know about the different kinds of foods, herbs, location of sites to see, where to catch a bus, and much more. The staff went out of their way to be helpful. In the morning, you can expect fresh juices, pan dulce, cereal, and three hot items. The hotel is not too far from the Santo Domingo plaza or the zocalo. Nuevo Mundo Coffee shop was only a couple of blocks away if you are looking for a great cup of coffee. They make their own pastries as well. The hotel managers were very helpful too. They were extremely knowledgeable on the sites to visit. They can arrange to have a taxi by the hour, typically 130 pesos an hour, to take you on the different routes. Ask them about it. Also the rooms toward the back tend to be quieter. It is on a busy street. We felt safe walking around the city. We did not have any bad experiences. We met some great people. The only negative about the hotel was that the beds were a little too firm and the ceiling fan did not have a slow speed. We would definitely return. Read more

Oaxaca was a destination I have been interested in for over 10 years and I was not disappointed. Mario, the hotel manager was very helpful and I was thrilled when he set us up with an all day tour with Susanne Trilling - she is the cookbook author of "Seasons of My Heart". He also gave us directions to their local market (not in the guide books) and we really felt like we were seeing the city like a local. The food at the hotel was really good. Being from New York City we were, at first, very careful to hide things, keep everything locked up, etc., but as our trip proceeded, we felt perfectly comfortable leaving the window and door open while we hung out on the terrace that looked out over the city. Hotel Aitana is a few blocks uphill northwest of the zocalo. I was here during June and July and was glad to be away from the zocalo because the center of the city was occupied with the tents and tarps of protesting teachers, who had turned it into a bivouac area. I highly recommend Hotel Atiana. It's in a great location near the Zocolo some of the city's best restaurants and coffee shops. The hotel was beautiful with a lovely open air patio on the first floor where meals are served, and a small roof patio with a great view of the city. Our room had a very comfortable real king size bed. They left two complementary […] bottles of water and local chocolates when they cleaned the room, and cooler of purified water in the lobby/dining area, free wi-fi throughout and two desktop computers. The breakfast is a fantastic all you can eat buffet with different dishes each day. Juanita, one of the women who serves breakfast is wonderful. She is very patient, friendly, and has a wealth of knowledge about the city. In general the hotel service is good, but the front desk staff are a mixed bag. I received conflicting information and different prices regarding tourist attractions from different staff. I don't recommend the all day tour to Monte Alban and other locations that the hotel offers. It was much more expensive than similar tours offered by other companies with storefronts near the Zocolo. and the already high price didn't include admission to Monte Alban. Maintenance could be better. One of the electrical outlets in our room was loose, and the wooden cabinets were warped and thus hard to open and close. The windows don't have screens so bugs can get in, and since there is no AC you will likely keep the windows open much of the time. Read more

Estaba limpio y el trato con el perdonal muyu agradable. Se puede ir caminando unos 15 minutos hasta el zocalo y disfruytar de restaurantes, iglesias, museos...la avenida que se encuentra tine mucho trafego y no hay estacionamento. pero estuvo tudo muy bien.
