"Great Banff Visit"
The hotel is beautiful. The rooms were spacious and quite sound-proof. The staff were friendly and helpful. We wished we had booked 3 nights instead of 2 because there was so much to do in and around Banff. We had a fabulous time at the Banff Springs Hotel. The staff was extremely accommodating without being over bearing. Everything from the linens to the ambience of the hotel interior was superb. "Beautiful historic property"
Our initial experience wasn't great. We had reserved a king bed and arrived in our room to find that the room itself was roughly the size of a king bed, had a queen size bed and a tiny bathroom no larger than a closet. We inquired and were told that because we booked through Expedia there was nothing they could do but they offered to move us to another […] queen room the following night. Our original room was on the 2nd floor and had a few of a pipe. The TV was mounted on a side wall so we had to lay sideways on the bed to watch it. The following day we were moved to a room on the 8th floor with a huge bathroom. The room was still small but it was a huge improvement over the first room. Even though it had a queen bed, we never would have complained of we had been placed in that room from the start. It was really lovely. The staff were wonderful throughout and gratuities are not accepted. The breakfast buffet is quite spendy but delicious with a huge array of options. This hotel is a main attraction in Banff and is very beautiful. We stayed on the 5th floor which is the Gold floor that has it's own reception and lounge with complementary breakfast and orderves. Our room was a good size and had a great view, however the bathroom was small and had a very small closet. Plus, you can easily hear the noise in the hallway. The […] hotel contains many shops, restaurants and sports facilities. The Spa is superb with pool/hot-tub facilities. The main pool area is quiet large with a lap pool, a baby pool and a heated salt water outdoor pool. The indoor hot tub was nice and hot...loved it. The hotel building is beautiful and the staff are friendly. However I was very disppointed in our stay. Requested extra towels and sheets 2 nights and both times, the message was not passed on to housekeeping- admitted to me by the operator. The drains in the sink AND shower did not work correctly, and had to call twice before it was fixed. Had dinner […] in Indian Summer. Family was hungry after hiking the entire day- I requested the waiter serve the appetizers ASAP. All the food arrived together almost 1 hour later. The chiken Biryani was COLD and my daughter found a HAIR in the butter chicken. We were famished so ate what we could before evacuating the restaurant. My wife and I consider ourselves to be seasoned travelers and the five nights we spent at the Fairmount in Banff were exquisite. The share scale of the hotel set amongst the Canadian Rockies is breathtaking. The staff were most pleasant and helpful. "This hotel is one of a kind"
This hotel is truly a magnificent place and one to experience. It has a patio on the backside that provides a view that is absolutely breathtaking and one I will always remember. I really only have two things to cite that were less than perfect. First the room we had was pretty tight, especially the bathroom. But, since I realize that this hotel was […] first built back in 1888 if I recall, I totally understand that the original design makes it impossible to change room size so anyone staying here just has to realize this. The rooms had all the amenities you would expect, it is just in a compact form is all. Second is charging extra for wifi is kind of thing I would not expect when paying the kind of rates this hotel charges. The amount is not that big of a deal, it is the idea of this that is the issue. You can get free wifi at cheap mom and pop motels so one would expect it from a 5 star hotel like this place. Other than the beauty of this hotel, the rooms are very uncomfortable. The AC barely works, obviously still using an old AC wiring system. No wonder they put a ceiling fan to make up for the AC - unacceptable! The bathrooms are very, very small with hardly any space or counter for personal items. And oh, you have to fight for the bathroom door to open […] after closing it - ridiculous! The tub does not drain fast enough so your feet are submerged in your own water bath while taking a shower - disgusting! We reported the problems twice. There was nothing they can do about it. Stayed on 5th floor concierge level. First room we had was next to family with 3 screaming kids. They moved us to another room and it was nice but bathroom was so small you could hardly shut the door. Loose dogs were running down the hall and children were heard crying most of the time. "Subjected to eviction and over-charged shamelessly"
We booked a two-night stay at an exorbitant rate (to which parking and internet access added not insignificantly). Upon check-in, we were told that we would have to vacate our room after the first night and move to another due to "inventory". That term was never really explained to us, but I suspect that a bus tour group, to which this hotel seems most […] to cater, forced the move. The bus tourists probably also get the reasonable rates. Our steep rate bought us only a tiny room. I paced it ... five steps from exterior wall across the room. I must say that the staff was apologetic and did make some attempt to alleviate matters, but their attitude probably reflected more the Canadian character than any corporate concern for guests. I have concluded from our stay at this hotel and two days earlier at the Empress in Victoria that the Fairmont corporate strategy is to acquire architecturally distinctive older hotels with reputations for elegance. But instead of providing the unique experience that guests choosing such hotels would expect, Fairmont gouges them. Those guests never return, of course, but Fairmont still is able to fill rooms with others drawn by the hotels' exceptional prior reputations. And the tour companies provide a base of support. So, my advice to anyone visiting Banff is to treat this hotel like a museum. "Wonderful hotel, but..."
The hotel and facilities (gym, restaurants, etc) are top notch. Rooms are clean and well maintained, but quite small. We paid for a basic room with a "valley view" (costs a bit more than mountain view), instead of a suite, so perhaps that explains the size of the room. The location is excellent and within easy walking distance to the town of Banff. […] The staff a very friendly and polite and always seemed eager to help. Having said that though, getting things like slippers or the like delivered to your room take quite a long time (30min). Although I do understand they make money from this, many things seem to be "nickle and dimed" at the hotel. No free parking ($25/day if you self park, more for valet parking (obviously) - although there is very limited free parking close to the hotel, it's only allowed during certain times of the day), you have to pay for the internet, etc. Overall though, I would definitely recommend the hotel if it's in your budget. Where do I begin. This is suppose to be the place to be in Banff, but was so disappointed. Stayed on the Fairmont Gold floor, the bathroom was the size of a closet, no ventilation. The room was larger than expected. The two pools were great. Both were very large and the heated out door pool was very warm and fun for the family to swim in during a light snow. My wife and I had stayed at Fairmont Banff Springs last winter and skied in the area. We had a great time so this year we decided to come back and enjoy the trill of the Canadian Rockies mixed with civility of people toped with fabulous hospitality of the Fairmont resort. We arrived at Calgary airport around 1PM to find out that our luggage was not […] transferred from American Airlines to West Jet in Miami. Needles to say for the first 3 days of a 5 day stay we had only our clothes which we had on from Tampa Florida. Upon mentioning this to the staff at Fairmont we were treated like royals, the entire staff did every thing within their means to make us feel comfortable. The concierge Rory, and Robert spent many hours on the phone with West Jet and American Airlines to find our luggage and Lawrence at front desk surprised us with a beautiful tray of fruit , cheese and wine that was delicious and made us feel so at home. We can not say enough about Fairmont and the beauty of the surroundings, but the hospitality and service was first class. I am sorry that we couldn't say that about American Airline and their rude customer service rep. on the phone.( but they have new paint job on their planes WOW that will solve all their short comings ). we will recommend this resort to all of our friends and family members and hope to go back next year, we are also thinking about a summer vacation in the area. "Cherry pick your wallet"
This is a 4 star hotel that wants to be a five star hotel. They are pretentious from the start when you (try to) pull up to check in. You get the sense that everyone is reaching for your wallet every time they do the simple tasks required by their service role. To boot, they charge you enormous parking fees when there is plenty of free parking available. […] If you opt for valet, be prepared to wait 30 minutes for your vehicle. The Internet fees are out of touch in today's world, but at $15 per day, per room, I am sure they cannot find a way to pass on that revenue. To boot, the quality of the wireless service stinks. Enjoyed the views, the ambience, oh, and the hot springs fed outdoor pool ... so relaxing!! There's a large indoor pool and hot tub too. Enjoy just walking around this beautiful structure to see all of the open rooms and spaces, really enjoy looking at the beautiful stonework. Did not enjoy our room. Did not have a king (could have had one on the only […] un-refurbished floor-4), agreed to queen on upper floor. Good view, but alcove ceiling made it necessary to "duck" head every time to walk around the bed & room. It's definitely not a 5 star hotel. It wants to be a 4 star hotel, and I'm sure if you stay on the Gold level it is, but if not it's a 3.75.The regular rooms leave a lot to be desired. We booked a deluxe room. The first room (#493) we got was big, but it was very run down.It had a nice tv and bed, but nothing else, except a little table and a ceiling […] fan and a really small bathroom. We ended up asking to be moved because it turned out we were right below the Gold Room 5th floor reception area which is all wood floors, so we could hear people walking nonstop.They were very accommodating moved us after the 2nd night and gave us $250 meal credit.We were moved to the 6th floor(#692). There was quite a bit of detail, crown molding nice tv and bed. The bathroom was still small. Public spaces are really amazing. We spent some time having drinks in the Rundle bar. It's a huge room, but they needed more seating during apre ski time. Our favorite hang out was the Wildhaus Pub. It's a 5 minute walk down 90 stairs. We went to pub downstairs. Best chicken wings and Jackson was a great bartender. The spa was very nice.Given the time of the year we only used it once because we couldn't get appt until are last night. They charge $49 per person to just use facilities. So plan ahead. The soaking pools are nice. They do heat up there outdoor pool for all guest to use. .
