"Old world charm"
The room was huge and comfortable. The staff on duty could not find our Expedia booking, but handled it all quickly and with no fuss. The hotel is some distance from the centre of St Andrews. It is one of the grand old hotels in appearance with big foyer and sitting- breakfast room. Breakfast is serve yourself everything and is adequate.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Lovely rooms in the new wing"
Stayed in the new wing as the rest of the hotel is undergoing significant renovations , room was really nice and spacious with a kitchen and super comfy beds. Loved it all even though you were closing up...can't wait to see the re-do! What history and what a great town!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very comfortable. Unfortunately, there was some renovation work going on at the time which may have accounted for the very ordinary breakfast. I do like eggs for breakfast and this was not on the menu - otherwise very good.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Class Act"
The hotel is undergoing a major renovation and there is of course some understandable disruptions but giving allowance for that, this is simply an incredible "classic" hotel. A must if travelling in souther New Brunswick. The main dining room was closed and we had to travel to the golf clubhouse for dinner. The meal and the service were 4 star.Genuine Expedia guest review

The hotel is under major renovation is cannot be properly judged. We were on a holiday of 8 days which included Hiltons, Deltas and Best Westerns. So disappointed lounge bar and restaurant were closed due to renovation - was offered complimentary self service limited toast and pastries in reception area (no orange juice for example). "Beautiful Resort needing major repairs."
the rooms were great - clean and very comfortable. The view from the windows was not as good. the swimming pool was very good - warmest water we ever swam in - anywhere! the hotel is in need of a major workover. the main building is falling down, quicker than the repairs that are going on at this time. it will take a lot of money and work to restore […] this beautiful resort to what it was 10+ years ago. the grounds are not kept up (shrub and flower beds are in need of work.) "Nice Old Hotel"
This is a nice old hotel which is currently under construction. This did not detract from my room or expectations at all. Currently the Algonquin is using their golf club as their restaurant facilities. Apart from the short drive this is a good alternative. The food was good and priced appropriately. Not part of the resort is a small Family Restaurant, […] the sign says, downtown on Water Street. Food here was excellent and low priced. Highly recommend this hotel to all visitors. "The Algonquin in St. Andrews, NB"
A comfortable stay in a large property which is in need of some TLC. Meals were on the expensive side and quality did not reflect price. Service was wonderful, though. All staff try their best to make the stay memorable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"too bad it's over"
it is apparent from the lack of investment in the exterior of this hotel that it no longer fits in the Fairmont model. It is a wonderful experiance to visit St Andrews and the Algonquin just enhances that.Genuine Expedia guest review
"A Lovely Place to Rest & Recharge"
A lovely hotel in a quiet, charming town. About a 10 min walk away from the main tourist / waterfront area and about 5 min walk away from Kingsbrae Gardens. Room was beautiful, and came with small kitchenette...microwave & fridge. Outdoor swimming pool in front of the hotel was heated. Great place to retreat from the fast pace of the city.Genuine Expedia guest review

The recent renovation of the Algonquin has preserved its character and history while making the accommodations modern and comfortable. Under new management, the staff are friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. Food at the bar was great, especially a trio of different local versions of smoked salmon.
"Historic Hotel, excellent location"

We had last visited the Algonquin over 30 years ago. The recent renovation leaves the property in tip top shape. However there are still service issues to iron out. Although there was only one person in line ahead of us it was nearly 20 minutes to check in. I had to go back to the front desk a half hour later (6pm) and it was the same story. I witnessed even longer lines on the following day. I called at 6pm to ask for help in locking the two french doors in our room. Three hours later I had to call again. In the self serve gift shop there is a sign offering free coffee, ice water and fresh fruit. In three days the fruit was nowhere to be found. On the first night we tried to eat in the dining room. By 630pm it was sold out. We later discovered why. The dining room had been shrunk to postage stamp sign. We were offered the noisy bar as an alternative but chose one of the many restaurants in town.

We just spent 6 nights at the resort and it was wonderful! This is now a Marriott property and that is how I found it. It is a very large resort but, even while being there, it felt like a small family run resort w/all the large resort amenities. It offers everything a person, w/or w/o a family could want. Town is a short walk and I believe the hotel has a shuttle but we never used it. Plenty of space to lounge, both inside and out, including both indoor and outdoor pools. My favorite spot was on the large porch w/rocking chairs, lounges and waiter service. I enjoyed just sitting, relaxing and catching up on my reading. I also did a whale watch & spent time at the resorts lake, about 3 streets away. I used hotel points and stayed free and still had a very large room. The room rate is also very reasonable. The hotel is about 30 miles from Bangor, Maine airport.I can't wait to go back there.

We spent a weekend here a couple weeks ago & it was beautiful! We were upgraded to a room with a kitchen area. The room was "like new" & was very posh with beautiful furniture, linens, etc. The inn has a really nice outdoor pool & there was bar & restaurant service at the pool with the waiters coming around periodically to take car of our every need. There is a large relaxing vetando with easy chairs & rocking chairs to hang out & a lovely parlour area near the bar with comfy couches & board games. We had a great time relaxing in the evening & playing Clue. We ate at the breakfast buffet & it was good (Although a bit pricey for the small variety). We walked to the downtown area & had dinner on an outdoor patio - the food was good. It is not a long walk, but there are also bikes at the resort you can sign out. There was also a really nice workout room - very large, state of the art new equipment & a nice bowl of fruit for snacks. the indoor pool, hot tub & water slide was really nice too. overall, we had a fabulous time with no complaints at all. the property is beautiful clean, well kept & the staff were very friendly & accomodating. I would highly recommend this resort to families with kids, couples, young & old....there was something for everyone. Even firepits for campfires with comfy chairs to relax in the evening!!! They have a good CAA rate - but book early to get the rate.

We discovered the The Algonquin resort purely by chance as we came to St. Andrews for a whale watching excursion, however, it became a highlight of our vacation. The hotel itself has old world charm but has been recently renovated throughout. Having 4 children we booked 2 connecting rooms each with 2 queen beds. The rooms were spacious and well appointed with fridges, microwaves, pod based coffee maker etc...The beds were very comfortable with fluffy duvets and lots of plump pillows. Room service was good, and there were a number of options at a lower cost for kids which they really enjoyed. The grounds are beautiful with a view to the Ocean, an outdoor pool and an indoor pool that has a great water slides that kids (and some adults) will love. Breakfast was a buffet and well appointed and the bar in the main part of the hotel is distinguished and had just the right atmosphere for a hotel of this type. The best part was the price, the rooms are very reasonable and I guess this is because of where the hotel is, however, I continue to maintain that New Brunswick is one Canada's best kept secrets and if you have never been start planning that vacation today and don't forget a memorable stop in St. Andrews to enjoy The Algonquin Resort; we certainly did!
"Great Week At The Algonquin"

While working at a youth basketball camp in town, we stayed at the Algonquin Resort for 6 nights and it was a memorable experience. Staff was very helpful and friendly (special props to Andrew of St. Andrew!) and the overall vibe was comforting. Lobby area is great, with a large piano and various board games and you can't beat the indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Free Starbucks coffee machine was also a nice touch. Only down part was the high prices at the restaurant, but that could be expected at a resort. All in all, a great property in an equally friendly and gorgeous town.
"Some growing pains"
08/18/14 Bird03 Amagansett, New York
Our room was not ready at 4:30 p.m. & we were told it was an issue of requested down pillows not being available. We said, fine, no problem, & assumed we had the key to our room as booked. When we got there it was not the room we had asked for & had been guaranteed by Marriott (bay view room, 2 queens), but rather just 1 queen. We refused this room & were then offered an upgrade to a suite (a slightly larger room with small fridge & microwave) for the same rate that overlooked some trees. We took this but part of the reason for requesting a bay view room was to see the bay; however, this was secondary to getting the bed configuration we wanted. The room was not one of the newly renovated ones in the main hotel, so a bit worn in places, but was fine. The bed was comfortable & the sheets were soft & there actually was a much larger tv than in the main hotel room. So, in the end we were satisfied, but the initial problem of rooms not being available after check-in time & not guaranteed, as is the Marriott standard, needs to be addressed.
"Needs Better Management"

My family and I spent 3 nights at the hotel last week - checking in on August 9th and departing on August 12th. While we feel that your hotel is for the most part a great place to stay - there are some hiccups and areas needed for improvement: 1) Telephones: our room phone never worked the entire time we were there. This is not only a safety issue, but it was also a big headache as it also hindered our ability to contact the front desk for service issues (please see below). We brought this matter to the attention of 5 employees on 3 separate occasions over our stay (being the bellman, 2 at the front desk, the maintenance man and, finally, the Manager on Duty). We were advised that the broken phones are a known issue at the hotel and this is due to the telephone company not having an adequate "switch" in their locked service room at the hotel. Thus, we were told that the hotel couldn't fix this issue. No one ever followed on this matter. Not acceptable. 2) TV: the television stopped working every time we turned it off. We had to walk down twice (since our phone didn't work) and twice the Algonquin's staff came back to our room to fix the TV. We were advised that the TV has to sync with the cable box every time the TV is turned off. The staff acknowledged that the TV systems in the hotel often go down due to sync issues and that the cable box isn't "very good". Not acceptable. 3) Luggage: we had to carry our own luggage down to our car, since we didn't have a phone to call the belllman and didn't feel like making the trek down to request a bellman. (We were on the third floor of the new Annex across the street - quite a trek down to the front desk.) 4) Pool: the pool is great, but they only have 7 chaise lounges around the pool. Each day, many of the guests had to arrange towels and sit on the hard tile around the pool. 5) Dining: the food is great, but the timeliness is very poor. We dined in the various restaurants six times during our stay and were never served within 40 minutes of ordering. In most cases, we were served nearly an hour after ordering and we did not receive any bread or crackers in the interim. The time of day didn't matter either - we ate breakfast all 3 days and 2 dinners and a lunch. The lunch was at 2:30 in the afternoon in Braxton's and it was nearly empty. Yet, we had to wait a full hour and ten minutes after ordering to get our food. On the positive side, the hotel's "junior staff" and also the general service people are all first-rate. The summer students and the maintenance man and bellman were excellent - they were friendly and positive and very nice. Likewise, there was a tall gentleman we met who was one of the managers - he was very nice and he even opened up the water slide in the pool a 15 minutes early when he saw some youngsters waiting to use the slide. Same with Manuel - who we believe is a "Supervisor" there. He was great. On the negative side, the senior management seems to lack follow-up and follow-through. We never had anyone follow with us on our phone or TV issues. Even better, if simple things like a TV or a phone or constantly breaking - then they should fix the problem permanently. It is poor form to pass the buck to the cable box or the telephone company. Lame. In conclusion - the Algonquin has the potential to be a first-rate hotel. But, the above issues are things that should be fixed - especially when they seem to be a pattern (see other reviews) and where the hotel is charging a lot ....we paid over $1,000 for our 3 nights and meals. Thanks, Bill Cleave

I have had the pleasure of visiting this resort before and after the renovations. The renovations were well done and extensive bringing the hotel up to date and modern. But with them took the charm and grandeur of the years past with it. I love the main hall area with comfortable sitting areas, board games and fire places! It is a treat to have the piano playing while relaxing here. I also enjoyed quiet afternoons on the veranda of the hotel. We arrived early and asked for an early check in. Karen said yes and quickly got us our room keys. But , when we arrived to the room it had not been cleaned. Karen quickly fixed the problem by moving us to another room. A room with more space, a better view and a walk in closet!! The room was beautiful with simple and modern decor. The only down side of the room was the temperature of the water. Twice, at different times of the day I showered and there was no hot water. Luke warm at best. It was awful. The service in the food areas is slow...but we weren't in a rush so it suited us just fine. The town is within walking distance, but there are some hills on the way back up. The Kingsbrae gardens are within an easy 5 min walk from the hotel. There are walking tours that meet at the front stairs of the hotel on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The water slide and two pools were very popular with families. I would love to return here!!!
"A Lovely Weekend"

I was fortunate to purchase a gift certificate donated by The Algonquin Resort at a fundraiser auction I attended. My wife and I booked our stay for some "decompression" after our daughter's wedding two weeks earlier. From the moment I first contacted the resort, they could not have been more helpful. Arrived late afternoon after a day of sightseeing in St Andrews. Really enjoyed our visit to Kingsbrae Garden! Lobby is beautiful and really invites you to linger with chessboards, scrabble, magazines, etc. Very friendly front desk staff. Our room was ready immediately - 2nd floor, located on the back side of the main building. Enjoyed the indoor pool with hot tub and water slide. The outdoor pool looked nice but we didn't try it. Spent some time sitting on the front porch in rocking chairs watching the world go by - slowly. Was surprised that the food/drink service to the porch area seemed very slow but may just have been the time of day. Did not use the bar or restaurant in the hotel preferring to go into town. Resto seemed quite expensive but also quite upscale. Bonfire pits out front surrounded by chairs were well used in the evening. Bikes available. Room was small by modern hotel standards but this is a historic resort so its exactly what I expected. Bed was extremely comfortable. Nice flat screen TV. Very modern bathroom with glass shower but no tub. Lovely rooftop patio just down from our room. All-in-all a great hotel and we'll look forward to a 2-night stay the next time!
