"The best hotel I stayed in during a business trip"
The hotel had recently undergone a refurb and it was top class. The classic style building with modern and fresh decor made it outstanding. This was my favourite hotel that I stayed in during a business trip along the whole of the east coast. I stayed in a suite which well laid out and well equipped. The staff and service was amazing. It was everything […] that you would expect from a hotel of this calibre. The facilities had everything and more than what you would expect. The gym had some really modern commercial equipment in it and the pool was a good size. The restaurant had a brilliant menu and it was executed well. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Old world charm"
The room was huge and comfortable. The staff on duty could not find our Expedia booking, but handled it all quickly and with no fuss. The hotel is some distance from the centre of St Andrews. It is one of the grand old hotels in appearance with big foyer and sitting- breakfast room. Breakfast is serve yourself everything and is adequate.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Lovely rooms in the new wing"
Stayed in the new wing as the rest of the hotel is undergoing significant renovations , room was really nice and spacious with a kitchen and super comfy beds. There wasn't much choice available at the continental breakfast but it wasn't too bad - probably only temporarily being held in reception due to much of the hotel being closed. all the staff were […] very helpful Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Loved it all even though you were closing up...can't wait to see the re-do! What history and what a great town!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very comfortable. Unfortunately, there was some renovation work going on at the time which may have accounted for the very ordinary breakfast. I do like eggs for breakfast and this was not on the menu - otherwise very good.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Class Act"
The hotel is undergoing a major renovation and there is of course some understandable disruptions but giving allowance for that, this is simply an incredible "classic" hotel. A must if travelling in souther New Brunswick. The main dining room was closed and we had to travel to the golf clubhouse for dinner. The meal and the service were 4 star.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Proper response not possible with status of hotel"
The hotel is under major renovation is cannot be properly judged. We were on a holiday of 8 days which included Hiltons, Deltas and Best Westerns. All our rooms were very good, but yours was the best.We would like to visit again when everything is complete and you have proper restaurant and bar services in the beautiful old Algonguin.I turust that the […] proper amount of funding will be given to this project. So disappointed lounge bar and restaurant were closed due to renovation - was offered complimentary self service limited toast and pastries in reception area (no orange juice for example). "Beautiful Resort needing major repairs."
the rooms were great - clean and very comfortable. The view from the windows was not as good. the swimming pool was very good - warmest water we ever swam in - anywhere! the hotel is in need of a major workover. the main building is falling down, quicker than the repairs that are going on at this time. it will take a lot of money and work to restore […] this beautiful resort to what it was 10+ years ago. the grounds are not kept up (shrub and flower beds are in need of work.) "Nice Old Hotel"
This is a nice old hotel which is currently under construction. This did not detract from my room or expectations at all. Currently the Algonquin is using their golf club as their restaurant facilities. Apart from the short drive this is a good alternative. The food was good and priced appropriately. Not part of the resort is a small Family Restaurant, […] the sign says, downtown on Water Street. Food here was excellent and low priced. Highly recommend this hotel to all visitors. "The Algonquin in St. Andrews, NB"
A comfortable stay in a large property which is in need of some TLC. Meals were on the expensive side and quality did not reflect price. Service was wonderful, though. All staff try their best to make the stay memorable.

"I can't believe I haven't been here before"
09/17/14 Michael O Bristol, Rhode Island
I actually stayed at the Algonquin by accident since I was on a long motorcycle ride in Quebec and the Maritime Providences. I needed a place to rest up for the last leg of the trip and St. Andrews is near the border with the US. Boy, am I glad I did! The property is stunning when you see it for the first time. It's been completely rehabbed by Marriott and they did an outstanding job in every respect. The common areas are gorgeous, inviting and comfortable. The staff, mostly college age, is well trained and professional. I didn't meet a single one who wasn't genuinely friendly and helpful. The rooms themselves are first class with upgrades everywhere. The room I had was very spacious and even had a dining nook, but the 10' ceilings with crown molding really added to the feeling of luxury. In fact, every aspect of the property made me feel as if I were in the very lap of luxury. Then there are the restaurants. Both are named Braxton's and one is a pub and the other fine dining and both are superb. I had some of the best meals I've had anywhere there. The house smoked salmon, apparently freshly caught right in the bay, and smoked three ways is to die for. I can't recommend the Algonquin highly enough and I plan to go again, hopefully many more times.
We spent a night at this lovely property. The front desk was pleasant and efficient; the room was large and tastefully decorated; the bed was firm and made for a good night's sleep; and the bathroom was modern and well-appointed. We had a water view from our room and also enjoyed sitting on the large front porch in the rockers.

Before saying anything else it’s important to clearly state one thing: The renovation of the Algonquin Resort in St. Andrews, New Brunswick is magnificent. I say this with some context because my wife, daughter and I began staying at the Algonquin in the late 80’s and spent a number of wonderful summer vacations there. We loved it because of the welcoming, safe, understated elegance of both the Algonquin and St. Andrews itself. When we learned of its two-year closing for renovations we were concerned. When we drove by last fall en route home to Maine from Halifax and saw construction vehicles filling the driveway our concern grew. Last week while traveling to St. Andrews for our three night stay, we were uncertain about what to expect. We returned home pleased and relieved that the Algonquin lives on, beautifully renewed for the future with tremendous respect shown for its historic past. There are changes everywhere in the hotel. But none of the changes goes beyond the point that would cause you to question the thoughts of the designers. For example, while the lobby overhead lighting and sconces are clearly more modern, they fully fit within the legacy context of the Algonquin. Likewise, the rooms have been beautifully updated and bathrooms modernized. The designers did so, however, with a subtle governor. They knew what had to be done. They did it. Most importantly, they knew where to stop. Everything has been renewed and none of the inherent charm of the Algonquin has been lost. Corridor walls are decorated throughout with enlarged photographs of long past Algonquin guests playing tennis and taking photos on the lawn. This could be seen as a contrived throwback, but, like all the changes, it works because it feels like it has been done with respect. There are wonderful new features designed to attract both family and conference guests. An indoor pool and expanded fitness center are housed in a new extension of the modern wing built a number of years ago. The indoor pool is coupled with a water slide that carries you in and out of the building before splashdown. The outdoor pool is where it has always been and will remain a seasonal favorite. Second floor rooms along the front of the main hotel now have patios. Again, the blending feels seamless. Windows have been replaced throughout, but their style has been retained. The lone small elevator, out of service during our visit, remains in place. It has now been joined by a larger, modern lift in a needed improvement. The staff members, many new, were uniformly welcoming and sharp. Still, as with any major change, it will take a little time for the spirit of the renovated Algonquin to fully emerge. Braxton’s dining room, in the space that used to house the gift shop, is in the rear of the building and rather dark. The former Passamaquoddy Dining Room was not in use for the public during our stay. While management’s apparent desire to target conference business (the Passamaquoddy Dining Room is adjacent to the main floor conference area) is fully understandable, indeed critically necessary for hotels like the Algonquin, permanent loss of its morning brightness and evening intimacy would be sad for non-conference guests. Also, there were no gardens this year. They were always a highlight. My hope is management was simply so focused on getting the hotel up and running that the rebirth of the gardens has simply been delayed. This is a long review. But it is written with the love of a place that means a lot to my family. On one of our first trips to the Algonquin, there was a small set of steps in front of the check-in desk so younger arrivals could reach up and grab a cookie. Our own “young arrival” is now in graduate school. But the Algonquin is fully ready to welcome guests old and new. It looks and feels great. We truly look forward to our next visit!

Everyone should come and experience this hotel, even if only for one night as we did. The town is so charming and the hotel reflects this seaside community. The room is beautifully appointed with wonderful linens, high ceilings, Keurig Coffee Maker, gloriously comfortable bed. The bathroom is rather small and could use more counter space, however the toiletries made up for the size. There is an indoor pool and workout area and we took advantage of the loaner bikes to explore the town. We also golfed at the Algonquin course which was spectacular!
"Overall, an exceptional Maritime stay"

A few notes: Check-in for a weekend getaway was welcoming and smooth. Common sitting areas are clean, comfortable, and staff is not hiding -- everyone appeared willing and very approachable. Our room and bathroom were very nice -- If a tub is an important part of the comfort and enjoyment of your stay, you should ask if they have any rooms with a tub -- it didn't occur to us to specify! The all-glass shower is big (the hot water temp. peaked but you can't make it scalding) and the bathroom, though small, was spotless. Regrettably, the lack of tub and vanity (there's a small shelf above the sink) crimped the anticipated 'pampering' aspect of our stay. Some of us gals require a full-length mirror when our getaways are dressy occasions, and we need space to spread out the department-store supply of cosmetics! The provided mirrors do not lend themselves to this kind of scrutiny! Housekeeping was attentive, friendly, and non-intrusive. The mattress and linens were very comfortable providing a good sleep with no notice of hallway or facility noise. The indoor pool is large and airy, the water slide thrilling, the hot-tub boiling! A clean, bright family friendly atmosphere. The outdoor pool was open and appeared spotless. A propane evening fire on the lawn was cozy. Deer scampering nearby at twilight was a treat to see. Our breakfast buffet was typical -- nothing out of the ordinary, but no complaints, either. Servers were attentive and watchful. It appeared that there's a lot to take advantage of at the Algonquin -- and staff was keen to make our stay as pleasant an experience as possible. Highly recommended on every count.

The Algonquin has come a long way. We have been visiting St. Andrews for many years, often for a night or two before heading over to Grand Manan Island. We stayed in the Algonquin in the past, and it was rather worn and well past its time. Well, after reading about the extensive renovation, we decided to give it another try. It was wonderful. The staff were incredibly friendly, and clearly proud if their "new" hotel. The room was spacious, clean and well appointed. The lobby was delightful, and the Braxton Bar was a very pleasant stop for an after-dinner drink. The black and white photos adorning the walls give one a sense of the Algonquin in its prime. Without question, the "old" Algonquin has returned. A note to parents of young children, our children particularly enjoyed the indoor pool, especially the 3-story water slide. We would most definitely stay again, and would absolutely recommend it.
"Wonderful, relaxing stay"
09/16/14 gabbygrrl Maine
This resort is perfect for a low key, relaxing time away. The resort has a spa, fantastic golf, fire pits, pools, slide, lounge, everything you need to step away from the "real world" and charge your batteries. You can walk into town or take the shuttle. Our room was small but well appointed and the bed was amazing! We had a patio which was perfect for enjoying room service, a glass of wine in the evening or just taking in the sun. The staff was polite and efficient. The only down side was the smoking-the room next to us was chain smoking on the patio and several calls to the front desk did not produce any results. Other than that, we had a great stay and would not hesitate to return here!

My family celebrated our parents' 60th wedding anniversary at the Algonquin and we were treated like royalty. We had 3 studio rooms, all equipped with anything we could possibly need, very clean, beautiful comfortable bedding, and high end cosmetics in the bathrooms. Dinner and breakfast in the Braxton dining room was a wonderful experience, great service, food well presented and hot and something for everyone's tastes on the menu. It was a special time made more special by the staff at the resort. The decor in the common areas of the lobby and bars are furnished with the work of New Brunswick artists and well displayed.
"Did the best they could with an old hotel"
09/07/14 rwn25 North Carolina
Only spent one night on a trip through Canada. Hotel was nicely refurbished and the staff were very accommodating. Room was very nice but the bathroom is VERY small. It is finished with all top end stuff but more the size of national park lodge bathroom. I am sure they did the best they could. Had a bay front room but your view is not much. Probably not worth the extra money.
