"Poor, poor service that makes you leave early"
Funny how the big hotels do not provide any service. After greeting us friendly at the front entrance, any further attempts to garner service left us empty and we left a day early as a result. While I was working, my wife wanted to work in the room after it was cleaned so posted the "make up the room" sign. After no service from 9am-2pm, I tried calling […] housekeeping (no answer), guest services (no answer) and finally the front desk (no answer). I personally went down to the front desk and asked that they make up the room immediately so that my wife could work in a clean room. They took down my room number and name but nothing came of it - no service. When I returned from work at 5pm with no clean room, we packed up and left the hotel one night early. The front desk made no attempt to apologize, compensate or rectify the situation. It is not too much to ask a hotel to try and please a customer - a friendly, and polite one at that. Some form of concern, and attempts at pleasing our situation would have gone a long way and not resulted in this poor rating. Sorry, but we'll never go back. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Real Treat!"
This is a first class resort hotel located in a tourist resort area. The hotel has all sorts of amenities including s golf course and tennis courts. It also has access to a variety of activities in St. Andrew's by the Sea. Our room was very large and very comfortable. It was also very costly but worth the extravagance for special occasions. Our room […] was very quiet; you'd hardly know there was anyone else in the hotel. We had dinner in the dining room and our meals were excellent. A real treat!! They have spent the better part of $20m renovating this hotel since my last stay in 2009. While construction is not yet 100% complete, the ongoing works seem very limited and we didn't hear any construction noise. The new rooms are huge improvement over the old ones - thoroughly modern and well appointed. While the common areas have been spruced up […] with new decor too, somehow the old world charm and character still permeates through the less inspiring (but still comfortable) cookie-cutter hotel furnishings. Service was impeccable (genuinely outstanding). Kids loved the waterslide. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"The best hotel I stayed in during a business trip"
The hotel had recently undergone a refurb and it was top class. The classic style building with modern and fresh decor made it outstanding. This was my favourite hotel that I stayed in during a business trip along the whole of the east coast. I stayed in a suite which well laid out and well equipped. The staff and service was amazing. It was everything […] that you would expect from a hotel of this calibre. The facilities had everything and more than what you would expect. The gym had some really modern commercial equipment in it and the pool was a good size. The restaurant had a brilliant menu and it was executed well. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Old world charm"
The room was huge and comfortable. The staff on duty could not find our Expedia booking, but handled it all quickly and with no fuss. The hotel is some distance from the centre of St Andrews. It is one of the grand old hotels in appearance with big foyer and sitting- breakfast room. Breakfast is serve yourself everything and is adequate.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Lovely rooms in the new wing"
Stayed in the new wing as the rest of the hotel is undergoing significant renovations , room was really nice and spacious with a kitchen and super comfy beds. Very comfortable. Unfortunately, there was some renovation work going on at the time which may have accounted for the very ordinary breakfast. I do like eggs for breakfast and this was not on the menu - otherwise very good.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Class Act"
The hotel is undergoing a major renovation and there is of course some understandable disruptions but giving allowance for that, this is simply an incredible "classic" hotel. A must if travelling in souther New Brunswick. The main dining room was closed and we had to travel to the golf clubhouse for dinner. The meal and the service were 4 star.Genuine Expedia guest review

So disappointed lounge bar and restaurant were closed due to renovation - was offered complimentary self service limited toast and pastries in reception area (no orange juice for example). "Beautiful Resort needing major repairs."
the rooms were great - clean and very comfortable. The view from the windows was not as good. the swimming pool was very good - warmest water we ever swam in - anywhere! the hotel is in need of a major workover. the main building is falling down, quicker than the repairs that are going on at this time. it will take a lot of money and work to restore […] this beautiful resort to what it was 10+ years ago. the grounds are not kept up (shrub and flower beds are in need of work.) "Nice Old Hotel"
This is a nice old hotel which is currently under construction. This did not detract from my room or expectations at all. Currently the Algonquin is using their golf club as their restaurant facilities. Apart from the short drive this is a good alternative. The food was good and priced appropriately. Not part of the resort is a small Family Restaurant, […] the sign says, downtown on Water Street. Food here was excellent and low priced. Highly recommend this hotel to all visitors.

My husband and I just returned from a one night stay, first time visitors to the Algonquin. We had a king room in the "old" section. The room was BEAUTIFUL and had a small but lovely bathroom with rain shower. We ate one meal at Braxtons (wish we could have had the whole drink menu, looked delish) and also did in-room dining for breakfast. We also used the pedway to walk over to the pool and hot tub a couple of times. This hotel had all the best touches- nice towels, heated bathroom floors, comfortable room temps, speakers for iPhone music, the lamps had electrical plug-ins. The julliette balcony was a great surprise, enough room to step out with doors full open and get a partial water view. The screen door is nice if you want the doors open for a while. We never did take the bikes out for a spin but we enjoyed the night time fire pit. The room was quiet and we never heard hallway noise. We explored the town, but you'd be happy just staying on the property for a weekend. The staff are friendly and in the main areas will approach and ask if you need a drink or food from the bar. What more can I say? Our night away was incredibly indulgent, relaxing and felt like we had a long weekend away!! Very pet-friendly.

We drove under the arches of this old world charm big former Fairmont on a previous road trip, and wanted to try it. We were not disappointed. It has the Fairmont Old world charm, along with modern rooms. Kingsbrae Gardens and the Bay of Fundy are nearby. It was too windy to be able to take advantage of the firepit for s'mores, but we will try another time. We found the price unusually reasonable for a hotel of this quality. I enjoyed the hot tub, especially since most are too hot for me. The pool was too cool for both my husband and myself, but they did say to let them know next time to make sure it would be up to temperature. My husband skipped the waterslide since the water was too cold for him, but there were kids that were enjoying it. We chose the Rossmont Inn in St. Andrews for dinner for their elk tenderloin, which was amazingly delicious. We would still stay here though, just decided against their dinner after reading some of the comments here. This hotel is without question will be where we continue to stay when we go through New Brunswick to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
"A New Brunswick gem shines again"

Myself and my wife recently spent a weekend at The Algonquin. It had been several years since we last stayed here. At that time the hotel was showing its age. Recently a multimillion dollar reno was undertaken by Marriott. We were quit impressed by what has been done with the resort. From the outside grounds with new propane fire pits, to the new look of everything inside. Our room with a king bed was quite modern. Although , the overall old world charm of the resort has not been lost with the new facelift. The lobby areas were great to hang out in and enjoy a good book. Service at breakfast and in the bar area was excellent. We did not eat at Braxton's.

Had a great time visiting this beautifully renovated resort with my parents and niece and nephew. Definitely a gem of charm. The new indoor pool and huge waterslide was a definite favourite. If you are lucky you might even see the wild deer that roam the area.

our introduction to the much anticipated return of the grand hotel was a bit of a letdown. Whatever the reason, wait staff was overwhelmed on the night of our arrival and we waited hours for service. The surprising suggestion was made that we might want to go into St Andrews for our dinner. (We didn't.) We did get a drink and menus, then abandoned. Quite late we were finally treated to a beautifully prepared quick meal and a belated apology. All was forgiven at breakfast when civility was restored, and we were treated to the excellent experience we had been expecting. The kitchen is superb......breakfast and dinner were first class in presentation and execution. Room was well kitted out and bed and pillows like sleeping on meringue. Excellent value, both on room rate and food bill. Lovely to see dogs allowed in the hotel.

We were considering staying at a more expensive location and were happy that we stayed here instead. Beautiful views, great service and lovely, well appointed rooms. You can walk to dinner and the Kingsbrae Gardens from here. While others complained of the restaurant service, we experienced a lovely evening and good food; probably because the hotel was not full. We loved the waterslide at the indoor pool...really fun. We had the pool/hot tub to ourselves most of the morning! Would absolutely come back.

We visited St Andrews last year and were greatly impressed by the look of the Algonquin. We looked forward to a return visit and the opportunity to stay there. Upon the return, we were greeted warmly by the receptionists and told that we had been upgraded to a suite. The bellman who took us to the suite was very warm and friendly. The suite was beautiful and large, but unfortunately had the wrong size bed. We were graciously relocated to another room, but the hotel was full and no other suite was available. The second room was nice but much smaller. We looked forward to dinner, thinking that this beautiful, luxurious hotel would have a great restaurant. We were disappointed sadly. The restaurant was small for such a large hotel and had no luxurious feeling. The waiter explained that the hotel catered mainly to conventions or large groups where dinner was served in the ballroom. The dinner menu had little to offer of what we were looking for at such a venue -- no fresh seafood. Though we are Marriott Rewards members, we will not be returning soon to this Marriott resort. Still, we could not say more praise for the staff and the overall beauty of the hotel.
"Great hotel but Needs proper management"

Went with three other couples for a weekend retreat at the Algonquin. We all love this quaint town and we looked forward to seeing the renovations. We thought the lobby, dining and room reno's were nice. Things went reasonably well except for service at the restaurant. Very slow, our drinks were not refreshed timely and our entree's were delivered individually over a span of 20 minutes. Some plates were cold and the food was just ok. It was a busy evening but they didn't manage the situation well. Overall, it was bad enough they comped our meals and drinks - which was fair for ruining what should have been a nice evening. I suggest eating elsewhere until there's indication that things have improved.
"Everything we'd heard and hoped"
10/08/14 Steve C Alma, Canada
We stayed at The Algonquin for a wonderful weekend in September, and our expectations were high after hearing and reading about the sweeping renovations they'd done. The reality exceeded our hopes -- even the mundane (and sometimes hectic) tasks of parking, checking in, and retrieving luggage were so streamlined, relaxed, and pleasant that they set the tone for the next several days. The staff was consistently available, helpful, outgoing, and friendly. Meals and cocktails were served expertly and enjoyed thoroughly. The public spaces and grounds were immaculate and yet informal; we strolled around admiring the attention to detail and the comfortable touches like board games and books. At breakfast, we saw deer grazing on the lawn, and from the huge second floor terrace we had a unique view of the small and beautiful town of Saint Andrews and the sea beyond. We tried out the indoor pool, hot tub, and water slide, each of which were clean, inviting and uncrowded (typical, or just good timing?) but mostly enjoyed the water slide. We can tell you from experience if you've just had a long afternoon nap and need to rouse yourself to get ready for dinner, a few trips down the slide gets you WIDE awake! Very fun. The Algonquin renovation had to balance modernizing against tradition, trying to keep the best of both, and I feel they've succeeded wonderfully throughout. The most obvious compromises is room size: guest rooms in the main building appear to be the original size, smaller than an average hotel room of today, but inside ours was fresh and new, very nicely appointed and not at all cramped or inconvenient. The bed was particularly comfortable. With just one chair and a very small bathroom, our room might not have been spacious enough for some, but I understand that larger rooms are available in the adjoining part of the hotel. We're looking forward to returning, although it will be hard to beat this visit.

Excellent stay. Outstanding quality and service at a reasonable price. The bar and restaurant are bit over priced, but the overall experience is well worth the cost. The staff is pleasant, respectful and helpful. Lobby and room furnishings were excellent. There is a nice fitness center and pool. The shower was nice and the wifi good, easily supporting Skype calls. The place is full of old world charm with all the modern accoutrements. The room was quiet and had a nice view. Will be back for a longer visit.
