Best Western Le Donjon - Carcassonne

We loved this hotel. It has a great location, is full of Old World Charm, offers large quiet rooms (ours had a terrace). The hotel staff is exceptionally professional and helpful. The breakfast is supurb. Carcassonne is a walled city not to missed. The Hotel Le Donjon is a hotel not to be missed.

We stayed in a room in the ramparts section of the hotel, with great views from the windows. The hotel was atmospheric, the staff friendly, and the hotel very clean. It was wonderful to stay inside the walls, since it was so quiet before and after all the tourists left. We changed from a smaller room in the hotel one a bit larger in the ramparts. We […] ate cassoulet at the hotel's dining room, and it was the best we had in our travels. The next night we had other entrees, which were not as successful. That and our rather small room dropped our rating from 5* to 4*. Would definitely stay again. The value was very good for the location. Here is how they handled the parking, since you cannot take cars into the walled city: As you enter the area of the city, we followed signs for "hotels" or something like that. Watch! The signs are not huge or obvious. (We also stopped and asked someone in the wrong lot.) We entered the appropriate lot, and an attendant approached us to ask which hotel we were staying at. She called the hotel, who immediately sent a van to pick up our luggage. The van driver lead us to the secure parking area. After we parked, they gave us directions on how to walk through the city walls to the hotel. It is a very easy walk. Arriving at the Best Wester Hotel Le Donjon was such a treat! We didn't realize you got to drive right inside the castle walls! And there it was, such a perfect hotel! The staff was very helpful and nice, helping with reservations and car parking, and even moving the car outside for us in the morning so it wouldn't get trapped inside for hte day. Tiny room. Very hot. When we called to ask why the airconditioner was not working, it took three phone calls to desk before we got the truth: they had to turn it on at the front desk, before the control would work in the room. At first they said it was working, just press on. Had already tried that but hung up and tried off and then on again. The second […] phone call, they said we had turned it too low and it wouldn't work at that temp. Hung up, tried again. Did not work. The third phone call, i askedfor different room. Then they said that they had to turn it on, and that there wasn't really a lower temp limit. Finally it was turned on. But Why the games? We were hot and tired and were paying for an airconditioned room. There were other problems with rude staff inthe dining room and empty coffee urns in thebreakfast room. Just a horrible experience. Oddly we had the same a/c problem, which was never resolved because we were too tired to pursue it, at Best Western in Le Mans. We ended up with no a/c there at all. That being said, The Best Western in Bourges is wonderfully managed by a man who takes obvious pride in his work. Read more

Despite what others have said, its not easy to park. There is an area outside of the city walls where all the hotels located inside the walled part of Carcassone have pooled parking. The problem is that you have to check in first than park. So...you must first park in a public spot walk a 1/4 mile into the city, check into your room -walk 1/4 mile back […] to your car, Move it to the proper spot. Than get someone to help with the bags and walk a 1/4 mile back to your room. We didn't wait for someone to help with the bags because it would take another 10 min. for someone to help...so We carried the bags 1/4 mile to the room. Despite all this it is worth the stay, but the parking is not easy and while you may be able to take your car into the city walls its still a hassle because it you can figure out how (we could not) and you would still have to move the car back before morning and walk back.! The rooms are wonderful and the hotel is clean and well stocked with amenities! Read more

The hotel had a great location. I could tour the town & take a break when I wanted. The room was a good size for a European hotel. The tile bath- room with double sink was convenient. I had room 26 on the second floor . I couldn't use the elevator unless I went through the breakfast room so I dragged my luggage up & down the stairs. The hotel was a good deal for the price. Nothing fancy, but the location was perfect! Although Carcassonne may be a little touristy and crowded in the summer, it was a delight to be able to walk around in the mornings and evenings in April with few people around.

For a hotel that claims it is non-smoking, my room had such a strong smell of smoke that I was inhaling it all night and all my clothes smelled for two days. And actually went beyond to make our stay wonderful. Parking is just outside the walled city. A Best Western employee meets you at your car to take your luggage. The positives: stunning, perfect, amazing location. Beautiful room with a great view. Very clean. The negatives: Really hard to figure out how to get to and (after about 7pm) figure out car and baggage stuff. It's definitely worth it, but it is a bit of a challenge (given that they're in the middle of a walled medieval city makes this more understandable, […] of course). The front desk staff seemed to speak more English than they actually did; had I realized that sooner, I'd have switched to French. They also seemed a bit generally confused and discombobulated. I got the sense that they were trying to help, but were just not all that well organized. The bellman, on the other hand, was awesome and actually seemed much more on the ball and spoke better English than the desk staff did. Breakfast, at EUR 12, was too expensive and not very good. Worth it? I don't know. If you're going to be in Carcassonne for a couple of nights, stay here! If/when my wife and I return, we'll stay with them again, but we'll also make sure we have two nights. The process of getting in and getting out was sufficiently time consuming (again, the location makes this understandable) that I'm not sure it's worth it for one night. Read more

You must park outside the wall and have the hotel porter drive down and get your luggage. we needed to check out early, and discovered that the porter didn't start work until 9:00am , way too late for us. 27 hours of traveling and we finally arrived-almost. Cars are not allowed into Carcassone between 10 AM and 6 PM. Park outside the walls and walk up to the hotel. Hotel porter will go with you back to your car and get your luggage up to the hotel. Do the reverse when you check out. The stairs inside are a bit lopsided but it is an ancient building after all. The room was small but adequate for 2 people. When we arrived outside the ways, a hotel staff member was summoned with a car and he transported us and our luggage to our hotel. Carcassonne is a wonderful place, though too bad that they had to reconstruct it not too long ago. Le Donjon is a wonderful hotel, with its own splendid character in the old ambiance of the old Cite. The main trouble was staggering with luggage uphill up the cobbled streets full of tourists. I was surprised that there were so many on a hot hot July […] day. Some of the surrounding shops are just over the top touristy -- and the French shopkeepers need lessons from the British or the Chinese on how to SELL and be polite and sensible with tourists (who are not all stupid).
