Fantastic central location, impeccable service and a great gym. Rooms getting just a little dated. Refresh needed, carpets a little frayed, still old tube 19" TVs...time to hit the 2000s with HD flat screen....

The lobby, entryway, elevator and hallways all looked not only clean but beautiful. The room was everything I could want - everything I needed and expected was there, and everything was clean and orderly every night of my stay. I made several requests for assistance with local transportation, including understand how to use the trolley system and for […] calling taxis. I was given quick, friendly, helpful advice. I used the gym and found it adequate for a quick treadmill run, but couldn't comment on the rest. The only thing that didn't fully satisfy me was the breakfast at Jake's, the dining available on the premises - it was not very good service or food, I'm afraid. The coffee was odd and when I requested tea instead, I was charged for both, and also given tepid water for it. Toast cost extra, was slow, and cold. Eggs were cooked well, though. Despite the breakfast, I would make this my first choice if staying in Portland again. Read more

First time in Portland and really enjoyed our visit. This hotel was in a great location and the staff, and for that matter, everyone we met was so nice and friendly. You certainly don't need a car here. The public transportation is fantastic. We'll definitely be back.

Nice historic hotel. Like many reviewers, we noted the tvs are very out of date but otherwise the room was nice. We did experience a fire alarm at 4am and thought there could have been a little bit more direction/communication from the staff during that event.

This was our second stay within the last three weeks at the hotel. The Governor is a fine hotel with friendly and attentive staff. Our room was ready on time and in great condition. The downtown location was very convenient and in a good neighborhood. I would strongly recommend the Governor hotel to anyone needing to travel to Portland Oregon.

I mostly enjoyed my stay at the Governor Hotel. This hotel was a few blocks away from the food trucks, where every cuisine you can name was represented. Plenty of other cool restaurants around the hotel as well. The bartender at Jake's, in the hotel, was great. Order the crab cake. The hotel is near several MAX lines. I took the Red Line from PDX, and […] after ~40 minutes got off a few blocks from the hotel, all for $2.50. The front desk staff was wonderful and helpful. But here is the caveat: Not long after I checked into a hotel employee barged into my room while I was inside relaxing and watching TV. She quickly knocked twice on my room's door, which was locked, then entered as she said "housekeeping". When I heard the knock, I asked who was there, but she had already opened the (locked) door. Apparently, she came to swap out the orange juice in the mini bar and was unaware that anyone had checked into the room. I was pretty startled by that, as a woman traveling solo. I think she should have waited a beat after knocking before coming into the room. To me, that's just basic common sense. I had the TV on, which she could have heard from the hall. Aside from that weirdness, the hotel is a good choice if you want easy access to downtown Portland. Read more

I love old hotels, and the Governor didn't disappoint at all. First, the location is killer. . .two blocks from the metro station. . .easy walking distance to all the local eateries, bars, attractions (Powell's especially), and shopping (neat local stores and standards such as Macy's and Nordstrom's). The front desk clerk was friendly and even upgraded […] me to a larger single room. . .one with skylights and bigger than normal bathroom. The room had a couch and a writing desk. . .large queen bed and a super big bathroom with a tub for soaking. The only downside was the TV. . .an old '80s model that swiveled. . .a bit disappointing since I'm a huge basketball fan and wanted to keep on top of the March Madness action. Anyway, everything else was great with the room. . .no refrigerator and no ice machines. . .but room service delivered ice in a matter of minutes. I was on the sixth floor at the end of the hall. . .very quiet. . .excellent maid service, too. Another drawback for some would be the internet options. I think they charge a good bit per day . .but they do offer 15 minutes of free service on a computer in the lobby. Anyway, I loved the ambience and the architecture of the hotel. . .lovely lobby with a wood burning fireplace. Be sure to eat at least once at Jake's Grill, the hotel restaurant, which has many photos and memorabilia on display. Read more

Stayed just for the one Sunday evening. Hotel is very cozy. Room had all the necessities. Walls were not too thin but we could still hear our neighbors (they were loud and chatty). Bed was very comfortable. Overall a great place to stay in town @ $100/night.

Excellent locale. You are just a few blocks away from historic landmarks, the downtown shopping district, and one of my favorite places in the city - the Cultural District. The Governor was a place to stay and provided a bed. The room was a bit musty, but acceptable. The bathrooms are very small and very uninteresting. The real gem of the hotel was the restaurant. The food was immaculately cooked and the cocktails were interesting and tasty.

The sheets were not comfortable. Street was loud. ie; trash was emptied outside our window when trying to go to sleep. Lasted about 30 minutes. King room was not as described,it was quite small. Want some ice? Must call room service, then tip the server. Tip the bell hop, tip the valet to get your car. Pay $35.00 to park your car overnight. Too many […] fees/tips. This eats up a weekend budget. Pros and cons of staying in a high end hotel. Pro, your staying in a high end hotel. Con, you can't get your car, or ice, or do anything without the help of the staff. This hotel scores on many points. Hotel was clean and comfortable, walking distance to shopping and restaurants, (food trucks right around the corner if you're into that), and Starbucks and Jakes Grill entries from the hotel. Light Rail proximity allows for an easy trip to the hotel from the airport as well as many other points of interest. Parking […] fees can be expensive so Portland's Light Rail is the way to go. We like to travel at least a few times a year. We had friends that travel all the time for work which recommended Portland for a weekend getaway, they said its beautiful & the food is amazing, they weren't lying! The food is absolutely stellar, specifically at Ringside steakhouse which the hotel staff was nice enough to recommend & book out reservation. […] Also Jake's grill downstairs in the hotel has excellent food, I highly recommend the stuffed salmon, it wasn't on their lunch menu but they were willing to make an exception for us, the entire experience at the Governor was top notch service. I have no idea how they are not ranked 5 stars. They upgraded our room upon arrival to a top floor room with an amazing walk out patio/balcony. When we arrived at Ringside Steakhouse, we didn't even order yet & we received an appetizer courtesy of the Governor. It was a very nice surprise. If I go back there, no question where I'll be staying, the Governor. It's got a great location in the middle of everything & very convenient for all of their great public transportation options, trains & trolley cars, & taxis. Very impressed with the size of the room and loved it when we first arrived. But, we did find a few things lacking although not show-stoppers. Main items that would have been nice to haves are: Dresser to put one's clothes, electrical outlets near the bed so we could charge cell phones during the night and have them bed-side, more light in the bathroom […] (hard for the wife to put on her makeup), electrical outlet with the coffee maker setup (had to move it to the desk then, get on hands/knees to plug it in. I think the upcoming remodel will benefit the hotel. The Governor has great character. I love the "old style" bathrooms with a giant bathtub and separate shower. A Jakes Grill in the lobby as well as a Starbucks are big winners in my book. Upgrade the rooms, maybe put an ice machine on each floor, and get a different reservation service!

The lobby area is dreary. It needn't be. The bones of the lobby and check in are good. Painted the color of hospital room. Lighting is inadequate...leaving the place dull. In the room the TV is from the 80 s, which was okay but the reception was horrible and impossible to watch the show we selected. At check in the service was great and door staff etc […] were great for our stay...until we were to check out. No door staff anywhere. No one answered front desk or to bring our car. Not that they were busy with someone...just could not find them. Had to go down and find our own cart to bring luggage down. Overall,it was fine and the staff great. Staff from valet service at the curb to floor housekeeper pleasantly took care of any concerns of mine during my first visit to the Governor. I was able to walk easily to both downtown locations i.e. Schnitzer Concert Hall in the evening and the next day to the Pearl Bakery & Powell''s Books. Will keep it on my list of choices for the future.

My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and decided to stay in Portland for the first time. We had never stayed at the Governor but the reviews were good so we made reservations. What a great experience! The location is great. We easily accessed MAX and it is within walking distance of Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Beautiful hotel, with friendly staff. I stayed three nights for business and liked that I could opt out of having my room cleaned. Sounds strange huh? But I enjoyed knowing that no one was coming into the room, my electronics stayed out, and no one was touching my personal "stuff" in the bathroom. I look forward to my next stay.

friendly staff, quiet room and a starbucks access right through the hotel. valet was pricy, but wi fi was free. would be nice to see more " life" in the lobby, a bit dark and drab, but those are the picky things, the bed was very comfy and that is key.
