The Locanda Ovidius is in a great location. It's right next to the Rialto Bridge which is central to the whole of Venice. Everything is within walking distance. So top marks there. Also, given the cost of other hotels in Venice, this is relatively cheap (but still expensive by any other standards). However, there are basic things expected in a 3 star hotel (and this is 2 star at best). The shower head was broken so did not attach to the wall. The bathroom had long hairs in it which did not belong to us. The window 'curtain' next to the bath was going pink/orange with bacteria. The breakfast is cereal, bread, toast, ham, soft cheese and tea or coffee - that's it. Not hotel standard breakfast. So you get what you pay for in Venice. This is effectively a budget hotel in a fantastic location. It's somewhere to make a base whilst exploring all Venice has to offer. Just come here with deep pockets......

"Awesome Location, nice place"
nice place, very comfortable and plenty of room. clean bathrooms and bedrooms. very centrally located to the Rialto Bridge (you can hit it with a rock from their balcony over the grand canal). the only odd thing is that they ask you to leave your key at the front desk every time you leave the hotel.

Very poor hotel compare to price charged! Welcome and staff very good but hotel in very bad shape or not maintained. Exemples : lavabo broken!! electricity plug on right hand side of bed NOT working!! Shower sides NOT working correctly!! TV aged and so small!! To take brekfast, you need to go in another building!! Management of this hotel needs to travel elsewhere to understand my comment. Compliments to staff who tried to do their best.

"Room for 4"
We are a family of 4 and stayed all together in one room at this hotel and we were very pleased. It was big enough, but not spacious. We also stayed at the Hotel Firenze in Venice at the end of our trip (which was more expensive) and we liked Locanda better. It is a great location with excellent views, nice enough room and a fairly nice staff. We liked staying in this section of Venice better than right near St. Marks because it was less crowded. Good room especially for the price.

"Beware"
Great location for access to main sites and the waterbus. Staff was friendly and helpful. It was advertised as having an elevator, however the elevator only works for part of the hotel. We had to haul our luggage up 29 steps. The worst part though was the lack of cleanliness and the condition of the room and bathroom.

If you are looking to get pampered and expect a five star stay, this is not your place. We were in for one night and just didn't want to spend $500 for a hotel. This hotel was within 50 yards from the Rialto Bridge, great restaurants, and gondolas, what else do you need. For the money you can't beat this hotel. Staff was very nice.

"Great location but no elevator."
You need to be able to carry your suitcases from the Alilaguna (water shuttle from and to the airport) stop up and down 2 sets of stairs and up and down the Ponte Rialto then the stairs in the hotel from the lobby to the first floor (about 30 steps). You need to make sure you ask for rooms on the side of the hotel with the elevator otherwise too bad. There was only one old man or an old woman to check you in. No porter so you have to struggle on your own. Breakfast was served but nothing spectacular. The hotel is old but I guess all hotels in Venice are old. It was my first time in Venice so I don't know about other hotels. You need to take shower at night because there is not enough hot water in the morning. The location is great. Don't eat at the restaurants near the hotel. Other restaurants near San Marco are better

We are a retired couple who stayed in Venice for the first time. We had a superior room overlooking the grand canal for 9 days. It was great to watch the activity on and around the canal and the Rialto bridge was visible when leaning out of the window. The room was quite large with 2 twin beds pushed together. It had a large wardrobe but no chest of drawers probably to provide space for a desk with drinks fridge underneath. The bathroom was spacious with shower over the jaccuzi bath. Breakfast was plentiful but lacked fresh fruit and fresh croissants. The old television (a large cube shape)had been converted to digital and we were unable to get it to work properly. The staff on the desk were friendly and helpful. We did not use the internet. Overall we felt things were just beginning to slip a little - no bedding plants on the balcony, a light not working on the stairs, age of television.

I've stayed in some really wonderful places in many parts of the US and Europe , New York, Barcelona, Niemes, Split, and Cancun to name a few. This place will stay in mind as one of my favorites! It was charming, the location was fantastic overlooking the grand canal and close to Rialto bridge, the staff was friendly and helpful, and service was excellent. We drove to venice and the hotel staff was kind of enough to walk us through the best place to park in terms of cost and how to access the city from the parking garage. ( a bit of a challenge as things are not marked the way they are in the USA and I don't speak Italian)

"Great for those on budget wanting a stay in Venice"
This was a wonderful hotel to stay in. We didn't think that we were going to be able to afford to stay right in Venice, but found this one on Expedia. It was more than we usually spend on a hotel, but we were right on the Grand Canal with a great view of the Rialto Bridge. The room was very basic in an older building, but was very clean and comfortable and the location couldn't be beat! A very filling breakfast is included and the hotel staff was very helpful. Would recommend to anyone on a budget who wants to experience the romance and convenience of staying right in Venice.

We had a wonderful time in Venice. The hotel was perfect for us...great location and staff. We were able to leave our luggage there prior to and after the check in/out times to accomodate our cruise and train schedule. "Matched expectations - Great location"
The hotel was what you would expect from a 3-star hotel in Venice. The room we got was bigger than average, clean and comfortable. The hotel (as any hotel in the price range) was old, with older décor and amenities but the location is unbeatable - right in the center, and you can grab a great picture of the bridge and canal from the café balcony. Staff was pleasant.

"Fantastic location close to prime restaurants"
This was quite a basic hotel but we found our stay comfortable enough. Our room was quite inexpensive but very close to the center of Venice, only 100 meters from Rialto bridge. The room had an en-suite bathroom with show, sink and WC. Although the hot water took a good minute to get hot, we were never short of hot water never running out. There was free wifi in the lounge area which overlooked the Grande canal and also the breakfast room on the 2nd floor which also overlooked the Grande Canal. The breakfast was pretty good; a continental breakfast but also cereals were available. The breakfast room had about 8 tables and although we only stayed there 3 nights we never had to wait for a table to become free. Wifi was probably available in the rooms close to the Grande canal but not were we were. A very small room safe was also available free of charge. Air conditioning was free and effective

Loved our stay in Venice. We chose the superior room with the canal view,Room 101. The air con wasn't working on the first night but were given a fan and Lucia changed our room to across the landing to 102...perfect. The rooms are a little dated but that's Venice for you. Only complaint is there is no tea/coffee making facitity in the room. Lucia was lovely and and helped us in any way needed so would definitely recommend this hotel

"Great Stay in Venice"
Location of the hotel is perfect. It is right next to the Rialto Bridge overlooking the Grand Canal. The tea room/ breakfast room overlooks the grand canal and in the evening gives you unmatched views of the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge. If you are coming from the Santa Lucia railway station then it is better to get off at the Rialto Mercato station rather than the Rialto station. From the Rialto Mercato the hotel is just a 10 minute walk (walking towards the Rialto Bridge) this will help avoid getting off on the other end of the bridge and then having to bring your luggage over the Rialto Bridge. The check in was seamless and the people in the front office were the most helpful, providing us directions to go around Venice, helping us with a map and also recommending good restaurants. The standard room is of a good size and has adequate space for two people and the bathroom was clean and of good size and had all amenities (like soap, shampoo, etc). In the evening you can grab a cup of tea in the dining room and enjoy the great views of the Grand Canal. The breakfast was nice with a good spread of items which was a delight. Overall I will highly recommend this hotel in Venice.

Fantastic yet simplistic hotel next to Rialto bridge. Very pleasant staff, available at all times. Room although small had everything we needed. Non canal view without terrace ensured quiet all night. For upgrade we were told €50 per night (shocking). Awesome continental breakfast set us up for the day. With the central location we were ideally placed to explore everywhere and everything Venice had to offer. Would recommend, it was fit for purpose - sleeping, showering. "Noise, Noise, Noise"
Never having been to Venice we booked this hotel for its location - we wanted a view of a canal. We had a choice of a 5 star hotel on a street or a hotel with a 'canal view' hotel and an upgraded room. In hindsight we should have chosen the 5 star hotel on the street. The walls are paper thin (do not stay in room 201 - it is next to breakfast) and every cough, sneeze, chat by other guests can be heard as if you are in the same room. The noise from outside on this extremely busy section of the grand canal at times is deafening and goes through until late at night and starts at dawn. The hotel itself was clean, old and tired the bathrooms were reminiscent of going abroad years ago with hand held showers, no shower curtains and no plugs. The beds are rock hard - I have a firm mattress at home however these were so hard that when one woke up you felt you had been sleeping on the floor. If you are staying one night then the noise probably wont bother you. We stayed 5 and were glad to leave the hotel.

"Nice location."
The hotel was in a confienient location, and very clean. The rooms were cleaned daily. The hotel staff made a rude comment about our room not being kept clean one day, we hadn't spilt anything or smashed anything, just some clothes on the floor. The room was small so not many places to hang clothes etc. This comment was not needed, it's not a big issue, and cleaners should expect rooms not to be kept perfect. the toilet etc was kept clean. There also was long hairs on the bedding which was annoying to remove. Other than this is was lovely

This room was beautiful 201. The view was outstanding. But there is a door that should be turned I to a wall connecting the room to the breakfast area. It is so thin the door the seats on the other side you can hear them as if they were in the room with you. Breakfast does not start until 8am however you can hear then setting up for breakfast. I strictly came for the view staying one night, so I didn't care. If I was on a full vacation I would change rooms or hotel.

"Horrible hotel"
Do not stay in this hotel if you want a comfortable bed, wifi, a shower that works or any dirt of customer service. We arrived to check in and were told that we couldn't until 2.30 as the "room wasn't ready"...it was 1.45! We went away and had lunch and came back. Took the woman 30 minutes to check us in. After paying 460euros we were told that wifi was "additional"!!! We paid it as we needed it but got a shake of the head and a huff when I gave her a 50 (my only note) so had to pay tax to help her with the change! Room was very very small with a alley view and a bathroom where most of the accessories were 100 years old or broken. One half of the shower door was missing, the other hanging off. Reported this to reception to be greeted her with "we have no other rooms". Mentioned that the wifi didn't work and she informed me that it only worked on the balcony! She never mentioned this although claimed she did. Tv is 100 years old with no uk speaking channels. Asked reception which channels were uk and got "I don't know". Asked if she could let me know and never heard back. Breakfast was not even edible and the place was like a morgue. Pillows were like pancakes and knew it was pointless asking for additional ones. All in all they have bit thought for customer service and just want your money. Location is right by Rialto bridge but you don't need to stay that close as taxi, walking, gondola will get you anywhere. Venice is a day trip place only in my opinion as everything is £££
