We really enjoyed staying at the LaFayette Hotel. It had a lot of charm! We chose the hotel because it is close to our son and it ended up being a great find!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Try Something Fun and Different"
What can I say? Fun, Funky, Cool. Great for my 60-something parents (Pool Balcony King) and perfect for my wife and daughter (Suze Suite). We will be returning with our friends from Vegas - hip and modern poolside days in our future. Meme and Amy are awesome; Sydney a little dry.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Wonderful place for an old-line getaway"
Wonderful place for an old-line getaway. Close to North Park and University sections, very diverse. Will stay there again if visiting SD in this neighborhood.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Beautiful, historic, and about 15 minutes from downtown/beaches/Old Town/Zoo etc. Poolside rooms are great! Comfortable beds, hot showers, bleach clean linens and room. Modern renovations stayed close to the historic feel of the hotel. Wonderful customer service and friendly people. A little higher in price but was a great stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
In town for a wedding. Hotel was convenient, affordable and very cute. The hotel is fun and charming. The room itself was unremarkable. comfortable enough, and clean.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Another relaxing stay at the Lafayette Hotel"
This was my second stay at the hotel in 3 months. I stayed for 19 days in November and then for 5 days this vacation. The hotel is very convenient to all the places I need to be. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The beds are very comfortable. We stayed in the manor and didn't have any problems with noise. I like the old vibe atmosphere with the […] old photos all around. They have 2 restaurants on-site. We have enjoyed breakfast and lunch at Hope 46. I will be going back in April for another 5 day stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The room was overpriced because it was February 14. Noisy neighborhood could only be quieted with a noisy air conditioner. The air in the room was masked with a sickening floral scent and we were greeted with a smokey scent in the hallway first thing in the morning. Very eclectic clientele and neighborhood. Would not stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Wow, didn't expect this!"
Okay, so I'm all about retro and the kitsch, but these guys took it to another level; at least comfort-wise.I showed up expecting a normal room or bungalow—as they call it, and was instantly upgraded to a house. A 2-story Catalina-style apartment with 2 charmingly-decorated bedrooms with all the nuances one would never expect from paying what I did. […] Sydney was exceptionally helpful and informative and I couldn't imagine anyone doing a better job accommodating their guests. "Cool Pool in February"
Everything was lovely. I enjoyed the pool even though it was cold. Loved the atrium area in the morning. The one night (Saturday)we tried to get a night cap at the Hope 46 bar the bartenders (there were 4 people ) ignored the whole left hand side of the bar for more than 20 minutes. We finally left.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not Business Class but affordable"
Howdy, On 2/1/2015 stayed 4 nights at $119 per night while downtown Gas Light District hotels were over $250 per night. Everything in the Lafayette Hotel was 3 stars or above EXCEPT the WiFi throughout the hotel and in my room and for every guest I chatted with was unusable or non-existent. The one breakfast I had was poor. Other than that, it's an […] affordable option with taxi service running $15-$18 per trip to downtown. Yet, I wouldn't stay here again. The taxi drivers all pointed me to similar priced hotels within walking distance to downtown. Next time I'll fly in and ask the taxi driver where to stay. Me. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Excellent hotel next to great places to eat"
Took a family trip to the San Diego Zoo and found this hotel as it is very close to the zoo. The hotel is beautiful and we had a poolside room overlooking the courtyard/pool which made the stay even better. It is located next to a bunch of places to eat and we chose pizza Luigi's. It advertised the best slice in San Diego, and it delivered! My kids […] had a blast. The room was comfortable, the staff was excellent, and the neighborhood felt really safe as we walked all around. In the morning when I checked out the staff told me to grab some coupons before heading to the zoo, which I did, and saved some money. I would have loved a mini fridge in the room as I have kids and keeping medicine/food/drinks cold for them would have been outstanding. But overall no complaints at all. Thanks! "Palm Springs/Old Hollywood charm in North Park"
Beautiful old Hollywood styled hotel. My girlfriend and I were traveling from Palm Springs and wanted a place that felt like home. The Laffeyete fit the bill in more ways than one. The lobby and pool area seem recently renovated and it showed. It was too chilly to swim which is a shame because the 9ft pool looked like an amazing swim. The night we stayed […] they had live music downstairs and a fully stocked bar with an impressive cocktail menu. The suite room we got felt very homely and was well appointed. Parking is ample as well. For the rate we got and looking at compromble rooms in the area it was a steal. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Nice San Diego Hotel."
Stayed in a suite, and the second room had blackout drapes, however they did not have the side curtains, so the sun still was coming into the room early in the morning. If they could make sure they had side curtains in both rooms, I think the hotel is a great place to stay. Really close to San Diego Zoo and not too bad from SeaWorld San Diego.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Loved the 50/s style of hotel with room overlooking pool and palms . After spending the night in a ground floor room pool side and loathing the smell from smokers . It is a non smokers room . Even our towels stank . They kindly moved us to an upper floor which I would recommend to others . Very fun overlooking the enormous Johnny Weismuller designer […] pool . A great fun place to stay on the Boulevard if you have a car . Staff were very nice . Good off street parking . Safe neighbourhood but not a down town location if that's what you want . Just a great bit of Holywood California movie star lifestyle . Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Old world decor, nestled in a venerable neighborhood of San Diego that has seen a reemergence in business. Monolithic pillars adorn the entrance, and weathered photographs of yesteryear align the walls. For TCM lovers, this is sort of a reverie of ethereal coolness. Ava Gardner slept here, for Pete's sake. Aside from the hotel's proud historical background, […] they have refurbished a restaurant and bar and kept their flagship pool in elegant condition. The crowd is relatively young, though not idiotic, so you don't feel like you're getting asphyxiated by a frat house. The old-timey Red Fox Steakhouse, located adjacent to the hotel, is rad for classic cocktails and date nights. And if you're not into that, you can waltz across the street for amazing Russian food or ridiculously good BBQ. Everything is a stone's throw, which makes drinking accessible and safe. The prices are fair at the hotel, especially considering how well they upkeep their grounds. Def recommend for couples. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

I went for a weekend getaway with the boys. Enjoyed the proximity of the hotel to a lot of locations as well as the hotel itself. Would definitely stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Didn't want to complain as it is a budget Hotel, but there were some issues. The main one was the fact that I put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on my door when I went out. I always do certain things in every Hotel room so I know 100% that someone has been in the room. I came back and someone had been in the room, it wasn't to make the bed up as that wasn't […] touched, but someone had opened the cupboard with the safe in it and had a look around. There is absolutely no reason to go into where the safe is, there is nothing else in there. I have not found anything missing so far, but I reported it to the reception and they didn't seem too bothered. Because of this I will never stay there again. I also had long black hairs stuck on the shower wall when I stepped in it. I am bald and had never been in there so they were not mine. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great unusual and less touristy location!"
This turned out to be such a great surprise! Right between the North Park and Hillcrest neighborhoods, an old funky hotel with the 40's decor and style. A little over the top - when I walked in, I said, "It's the Grand Budapest Hotel" and half-expected someone to be wearing the insignia of the Society of the Crossed Keys. I think we got one of the […] not updated rooms, but it was still great, and exceptionally clean. Minimal noise heard through the walls, which is hugely important to me. Pool is beautiful, not heated warm enough for winter swimming. Staff was gracious and courteous. Fun to hang around the lobby. Not really walking distance from the tourist attractions (but what is in Southern California?), but in a cool gay gentrifying but not yet gentrified SD neighborhood which we thoroughly enjoyed. Be sure to try the Ethiopian and Russian restaurants across the street. Both were great. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

A friend recommends this property to anyone coming to town. For the weekend's events, it was perfectly situated - centralized to many of the venues we were attending. It was also close to an area of town with little shops and a lot of restaurants. Our originally assigned suite was in the building behind the main hotel and had two bathrooms, a king […] size bed, and a bunk bed with a full and twin beds. It also had a musty smell due to water seeping in through a doorway. (That's my guess.) The carpeting directly by the door was damp. When I notified the front desk, they offered an upgraded room in the town homes adjacent to the property. The new suite had a living room and a full kitchen downstairs with two bedrooms upstairs - a king size bed in one; the other, a full. The only negative about this suite was it had a single bathroom. Except for the bathroom, all the flooring was hardwood. Both suites had a Keurig coffee maker, but not enough coffee. Each day, I had to ask for more coffee cup / pod things. Two coffee / pod things of regular coffee is not enough for some of us - we need caffeine! :) The flooring wasn't well swept. I stepped on a bobby pin that belonged to a previous guest. I am really bummed I didn't get to spend any time poolside. Johnny Weismuller supposedly designed their pool. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"3 out of 5 at best."
The hotel had a New Orleans type feel to it. For being as old as it was, it was in pretty good condition. The beds were comfy (about a 7 on a 10 pt. scale) but the pillows were too big and very uncomfortable. The towel rack kept falling off, and the lotion bottle in the bathroom was half full so I'm not sure if it was changed out prior to our arrival. […] The pool looked clean from our balcony. Parking was a bit of a hassle at night since there aren't too many spots in the parking lot areas for each side of the hotel so when we left for dinner and came back we had to park on the opposite side of the hotel. There was a rowdy bunch that we could hear jumping into the pool and hooting and hollering around 2 am which wasn't very pleasant. It's a charming little hotel, but I don't think I'd stay here again. I don't like it when I have to worry about comfortable pillows, broken towels racks, and being able to hear people being rowdy outside. Great for those of you who are looking to go bar hoping nearby and don't need to worry about your kids getting woken up. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Small hotel room, no air system."
This hotel is only "okay". The room felt really small. Usually hotel rooms have the bed and then a table and a comfortable chair. This one did too, but everything felt really cramped in. There wasn't an air system in the bathroom, so it sucked using the bathroom because the smell would either stay in the bathroom or it would go into the room. Then, […] our AC system didn't work in the room. The remote didn't change the temperature number and it would either be too hot or too cold. For some reason, it didn't go to the "right" temperature that we desired. Our hair dryer also didn't work and I had to ask for a new one from the front desk. We were very disappointed by this hotel because it had a 4/5 rating, but not only did it not match my expectations, it disappointed me. We will definitely not be coming back. Pictures are not telling you that this hotel is 40+ years old. Rooms smell old. Poor Wi-Fi reception, had to use my hotspot. Restroom had no vents, you need to open window that leads to hallway outside. Power outlets are loose, you can't plug in your phones. No curtains, only pull down blinds. I was in a Suze suite and bunks beds mattress are super […] thin. I was supposed to stay 2 night... Too loud and too many people walking by your cars, bad area. Not safe, Im leaving tomorrow. "It maybe worth it if you get the sale rate..."
It's a vintage hotel that was supposedly renovated a few years ago. Appears that most of the Reno was to spruce up the public areas - like the pool- not the rooms. Room was clean, but very plain, linens were ok, carpet was already worn to the point I felt uncomfortable walking barefoot. King bed in our room was too soft for my taste. The only sitting […] option was a beat up black office chair circa 1990s. Ice machine on my floor was broken, and I was told by an employee, not quite politely, to go down to the lobby bar to get ice. No apologies offered for the inconvenience. They charge 8 bucks for parking, which is kinda silly given plenty of street parking available. Location of the hotel is in a transitional neighborhood, which may make some people uncomfortable, but it's close to many good eateries. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
