Charming older hotel - beautifully updated and retains some of its old-school ambiance. A lovely little oasis in old uptown.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Historic San Diego Hotel"
A unique, historical hotel experience, near Balboa Park. Visit the Auto Museum and Train store on Park Blvd. within walking distance from hotel. Front desk help was great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Cool place but could use some updating. Wi fi is weak. People are great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice San Diego Hotel."
Stayed in a suite, and the second room had blackout drapes, however they did not have the side curtains, so the sun still was coming into the room early in the morning. If they could make sure they had side curtains in both rooms, I think the hotel is a great place to stay. Really close to San Diego Zoo and not too bad from SeaWorld San Diego.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"HOTEL was close to where I needed to go every day"
I liked the old world unpretentious atmosphere. What I didn't like was the fire alarm going off for an hour on a Saturday night for no apparent reason.Genuine Expedia guest review
Loved the 50/s style of hotel with room overlooking pool and palms . After spending the night in a ground floor room pool side and loathing the smell from smokers . It is a non smokers room . Even our towels stank . They kindly moved us to an upper floor which I would recommend to others . Very fun overlooking the enormous Johnny Weismuller designer […] pool . A great fun place to stay on the Boulevard if you have a car . Staff were very nice . Good off street parking . Safe neighbourhood but not a down town location if that's what you want . Just a great bit of Holywood California movie star lifestyle . Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Old world decor, nestled in a venerable neighborhood of San Diego that has seen a reemergence in business. Monolithic pillars adorn the entrance, and weathered photographs of yesteryear align the walls. For TCM lovers, this is sort of a reverie of ethereal coolness. Ava Gardner slept here, for Pete's sake. Aside from the hotel's proud historical background, […] they have refurbished a restaurant and bar and kept their flagship pool in elegant condition. The crowd is relatively young, though not idiotic, so you don't feel like you're getting asphyxiated by a frat house. The old-timey Red Fox Steakhouse, located adjacent to the hotel, is rad for classic cocktails and date nights. And if you're not into that, you can waltz across the street for amazing Russian food or ridiculously good BBQ. Everything is a stone's throw, which makes drinking accessible and safe. The prices are fair at the hotel, especially considering how well they upkeep their grounds. Def recommend for couples. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great adventure into the past"
I read recently that one should never do anything unless it can be made into a story. We chose this hotel because we have had great experiences with other older hotels. They are part of history and have a story to tell.. We were fascinated with the story behind the hotel. We also were delighted to see that it had not been remodeled to look like modern […] hotels. The Hotel staff was very helpful and accommodating. The room exceeded my expectations. We had the family suite which was extremely spacious with a huge outdoor patio. It had a lovely fireplace and a comfortable living room with upgrades such as flat screen tv's in both rooms and down bedding. The Red Fox lounge had great service and food as well. We […] ended up extending our stay twice. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I left after I checked into my poolside room (43) just two hours after arriving. The heating system in my room was broken and not working and called 3 times to have this repaired or simply move to a room with working heat. After several attempts failed to have the hotel staff try a correct the problem, I decided to look further into why the unit was […] not working and as I was looking at the electrical outlet where the unit was plugged into I discovered a den of spiders and immediately left just before 10pm the same day. While I brought this to the attention of the hotel it is apparent that no one followed up because following my departure from the Lafayette and into a downtown hotel, no one called or followed up with me and due to the rate being a goof value decided to just let the $107.00 go. Quiet, convenient. Would have liked to stay longe. Ate supper at the restaurant which was good. Easy check in and out. Will definitely return if back in the San Diego area.Genuine Expedia guest review
"The location of the hotel is ideal!"
The staff is great but the hotel is old and therefore loud and bright. Towels and mattresses are about due to be replaced- stained towels and saggy mattresses. Check in was super easy and I needed to check out early and the staff was great. When ongoing construction woke me up very early one morning, the staff brought me a set of complimentary earplugs […] and an eye mask. I would stay there again- but this time I would go for a bungalow. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

An excellent choice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Was a perfect satiation for my girlfriend and I. Comfortable and clean.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel is really good. I loved the stay. Though I taught the breakfast menu can have more varieties may be for vegetarians. Also the rooms should either a small fridge or oven.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I went for a weekend getaway with the boys. Enjoyed the proximity of the hotel to a lot of locations as well as the hotel itself. Would definitely stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Didn't want to complain as it is a budget Hotel, but there were some issues. The main one was the fact that I put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on my door when I went out. I always do certain things in every Hotel room so I know 100% that someone has been in the room. I came back and someone had been in the room, it wasn't to make the bed up as that wasn't […] touched, but someone had opened the cupboard with the safe in it and had a look around. There is absolutely no reason to go into where the safe is, there is nothing else in there. I have not found anything missing so far, but I reported it to the reception and they didn't seem too bothered. Because of this I will never stay there again. I also had long black hairs stuck on the shower wall when I stepped in it. I am bald and had never been in there so they were not mine. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great unusual and less touristy location!"
This turned out to be such a great surprise! Right between the North Park and Hillcrest neighborhoods, an old funky hotel with the 40's decor and style. A little over the top - when I walked in, I said, "It's the Grand Budapest Hotel" and half-expected someone to be wearing the insignia of the Society of the Crossed Keys. I think we got one of the […] not updated rooms, but it was still great, and exceptionally clean. Minimal noise heard through the walls, which is hugely important to me. Pool is beautiful, not heated warm enough for winter swimming. Staff was gracious and courteous. Fun to hang around the lobby. Not really walking distance from the tourist attractions (but what is in Southern California?), but in a cool gay gentrifying but not yet gentrified SD neighborhood which we thoroughly enjoyed. Be sure to try the Ethiopian and Russian restaurants across the street. Both were great. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We were by the ice machine and air conditioning compressor so the room was a bit noisy. Couldn't bring food in from outside. In general a decent place. Clean. Rooms kind of small. Off the beaten track but plenty of eating places close by.Genuine Expedia guest review
Beautiful property with "old time" feeling. Wish we could have had more time to explore the various features. Friendly staff. Close to everything in San Diego (Zoo, beaches, Stadium, Gas Lamp District). Pool view rooms offered great atmosphere. Pool was a little cold (it was December) but perhaps a heater or supplement would be a decent investment.Genuine Expedia guest review

Clean room, VERY friendly staffGenuine Hotels.com guest review
A friend recommends this property to anyone coming to town. For the weekend's events, it was perfectly situated - centralized to many of the venues we were attending. It was also close to an area of town with little shops and a lot of restaurants. Our originally assigned suite was in the building behind the main hotel and had two bathrooms, a king […] size bed, and a bunk bed with a full and twin beds. It also had a musty smell due to water seeping in through a doorway. (That's my guess.) The carpeting directly by the door was damp. When I notified the front desk, they offered an upgraded room in the town homes adjacent to the property. The new suite had a living room and a full kitchen downstairs with two bedrooms upstairs - a king size bed in one; the other, a full. The only negative about this suite was it had a single bathroom. Except for the bathroom, all the flooring was hardwood. Both suites had a Keurig coffee maker, but not enough coffee. Each day, I had to ask for more coffee cup / pod things. Two coffee / pod things of regular coffee is not enough for some of us - we need caffeine! :) The flooring wasn't well swept. I stepped on a bobby pin that belonged to a previous guest. I am really bummed I didn't get to spend any time poolside. Johnny Weismuller supposedly designed their pool. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"3 out of 5 at best."
The hotel had a New Orleans type feel to it. For being as old as it was, it was in pretty good condition. The beds were comfy (about a 7 on a 10 pt. scale) but the pillows were too big and very uncomfortable. The towel rack kept falling off, and the lotion bottle in the bathroom was half full so I'm not sure if it was changed out prior to our arrival. […] The pool looked clean from our balcony. Parking was a bit of a hassle at night since there aren't too many spots in the parking lot areas for each side of the hotel so when we left for dinner and came back we had to park on the opposite side of the hotel. There was a rowdy bunch that we could hear jumping into the pool and hooting and hollering around 2 am which wasn't very pleasant. It's a charming little hotel, but I don't think I'd stay here again. I don't like it when I have to worry about comfortable pillows, broken towels racks, and being able to hear people being rowdy outside. Great for those of you who are looking to go bar hoping nearby and don't need to worry about your kids getting woken up. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Small hotel room, no air system."
This hotel is only "okay". The room felt really small. Usually hotel rooms have the bed and then a table and a comfortable chair. This one did too, but everything felt really cramped in. There wasn't an air system in the bathroom, so it sucked using the bathroom because the smell would either stay in the bathroom or it would go into the room. Then, […] our AC system didn't work in the room. The remote didn't change the temperature number and it would either be too hot or too cold. For some reason, it didn't go to the "right" temperature that we desired. Our hair dryer also didn't work and I had to ask for a new one from the front desk. We were very disappointed by this hotel because it had a 4/5 rating, but not only did it not match my expectations, it disappointed me. We will definitely not be coming back. "Great hotel, bad wifi"
Great hotel with really nice ambiance. The historic factor is pretty cool. However the wifi throughout the hotel is terrible. The gym is also a little lackluster. But I would recommend this overall.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Very nice place to stay. Only bad parts had to pay for parking and if your room is in the front the street noise in the morning is kinda loud.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Pictures are not telling you that this hotel is 40+ years old. Rooms smell old. Poor Wi-Fi reception, had to use my hotspot. Restroom had no vents, you need to open window that leads to hallway outside. Power outlets are loose, you can't plug in your phones. No curtains, only pull down blinds. I was in a Suze suite and bunks beds mattress are super […] thin. I was supposed to stay 2 night... Too loud and too many people walking by your cars, bad area. Not safe, Im leaving tomorrow. "It maybe worth it if you get the sale rate..."
It's a vintage hotel that was supposedly renovated a few years ago. Appears that most of the Reno was to spruce up the public areas - like the pool- not the rooms. Room was clean, but very plain, linens were ok, carpet was already worn to the point I felt uncomfortable walking barefoot. King bed in our room was too soft for my taste. The only sitting […] option was a beat up black office chair circa 1990s. Ice machine on my floor was broken, and I was told by an employee, not quite politely, to go down to the lobby bar to get ice. No apologies offered for the inconvenience. They charge 8 bucks for parking, which is kinda silly given plenty of street parking available. Location of the hotel is in a transitional neighborhood, which may make some people uncomfortable, but it's close to many good eateries. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Location is the Deciding Factor For Me"
We usually stay at The Lafayette while in San Diego because it is close to our daughter's home. Though the price varies widely by season, it's a value compared to downtown hotels, particularly because they don't charge for parking or wifi. Unfortunately during our last stay there was a very loud auction/party going on in the pool area and the host was […] yelling into a microphone for hours past my bedtime... I had to put in my earplugs to get to sleep. The rooms, though rather Spartan, are always spotless, the beds comfortable, and the A/C welcome on hot days. They've recently added K-cup coffee brewers in the rooms, which is a nice improvement. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

We are a family of 5 and were upgraded to a bungalow with no additional charge. The staff was SO nice and the restaurant for breakfast was outstanding. A fun place to stay and very convenient to the zoo and other attractions. Will absolutely stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Great place to stay! I was very pleased with the look and feel of this hotel. It is an older building but has been kept clean and was redone to taste. Everything in their description fit and was spot on. The staff was very nice and friendly, great food from the restaurant. Great location for everything in San Diego for sure. The only thing I didn't […] like was there wasn't a refrigerator or a table in our room yet very spacious for them in the future. (hint) Minor inconvenience but would have been better with a place to put some of our left overs from the restaurant. All in all I loved this place and plan to stay again in the future, especially if they start putting refrigerators in their rooms. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very good value, convenient location"
We had stayed here before. This time we had a room in the main building and parking in the garage below. Our room was small, but sufficient, since we only stayed there to sleep. The elevator was a little scary. The buttons don't light up and it seemed very old. We didn't know that there was a parking fee of $8/night. We mentioned that at check-in and […] we were not billed. Apparently, this fee was only put into action a few weeks ago. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
