"I would stay at the Lafayette again..."
The Lafayette turned out to be a wonderful choice for a place to stay while visiting my family in San Diego. An adjustment - from a distant, closet sized room for three (3) to a more spacious pool accessible room made the difference. According to my family, the hotel was well located for pickups for trips to Sea World, Aquatica, and other site seeing […] trips. I would recommend the Lafayette and I would stay there again. "Eh.... It was a hotel u guess"
The hotel itself was not bad looking, The room was okay, The service was respectable, Yet way better out there for the price. A couple of things that I didn't like... The walls work too thin, I could hear the maids at 8:30 in the morning speaking in Spanish Discussing which room they were cleaning next In a very loud voice disregarding people still […] in bed, I myself speak Spanish and felt that the conversations they were having also work a bit inappropriate. They do have a nice swimming pool and on Tuesdays and Thursdays they play a movie And all the guests meet at the pool That was different but nice. For me it was a last minute thing and settled for what was available. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good for the price"
When we first checked in, we had to sign a lot of papers which I thought was a bit weird. Our first room smelled of cigarette smoke even though we had requested non smoking. We were moved right away and even got a little bit of a nicer room as a result. The bathroom was super small and a couple of times some things fell on the floor/toilet by bumping […] into them because of the close quarters. The room was your basic room, nothing too fancy, but also not dull at the same time. It served its purpose for the night. The lobby was very beautiful and the pool area. The pool was very relaxing and very clean. The lobby was almost magical looking and took you back in history. They also had outside giant size (life size) checker and chess board sets, which were a ton of fun to play. As for the surrounding area, there was not much around and the few things that were around, I didn't feel safe when going to the market. I did feel safe at the hotel though, and your car is locked in their garage area (complimentary parking included). Overall I think it was a great hotel for the price! "Young, hip, non traditional hotel."
Good hotel if you are in town for a quick business meeting or trip. Great for the younger hipster crowd. Not an ideal place for families with kids. The hotel has an adult swim club which attracts a young, fun, party crowd.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Not A Family Place but could be great Party"
I stayed for 5 Nights in Manor with my wife and daughter visiting family that lived nearby. The Room was overall good but cost an extra $15/night for a fridge. Internet only worked half the time so I had to go over to my brothers for what business emails i had to send off. For most part I was able to park in the underground structure as long as parked […] before 6-7pm. IF you wanted anyone to come hang out and swim at the pool with you it was extra $$$ per person just for them to swim. I was already checked in before they told me that. I checked in Thurs and on Sun (day all family was off work and ready to hang out) we tried to go swimming at noon and they kicked us out of the pool because we had kids and on Sun and Mon 1-5 is adult only hours. None of this was ever mentioned at check-in. The Hotel itself was old but had a new paint job so it was nice enough. If I were still single and into the party scene I would have loved this hotel and Poolside suite would have been great but...I'm a family man now so this hotel isn't for me. My brother lives less than 2 miles from here so it's very convenient for me and I will still NEVER stay here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"ok, not great"
I read the reviews that said it was worth staying at. I found it otherwise. I didn't care for the very outdated style in the rooms. The beds were okay, not especially comfortable. Pool was huge, but no jacuzzi. They had a huge party one day during our stay, which was annoying. Tons of Vegas style folks at the pool all day and into the evening. Very […] loud. Parking was quite difficult. I had to park around on the streets 5 out of the 6 times I parked. Hotel looks very old and the entry is very outdated. Staff were nice enough. Rooms are large, but not well appointed. Bathroom very old. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Old School Romance"
My daughter and I loved this hotel. It put me right back in time. If you want a quiet, quaint hotel, this is the one for you. When I travel to San Diego I will definitely stay at the Lafayette.Genuine Expedia guest review
I enjoyed the hotel and was convenient to attractions we visited. Only complaint was the tub/shower drained really, really slow. The ice machine on the second floor was not working the 4 days we were there and had to go all the way outside to the machine down past the pool.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"I wouldn't go back!"
We stayed for two nights. The hotel seems to have been a decent place 20 years ago but it is in deteriorating condition now. The bed was uncomfortable and the room had a terrible air flow. The air conditioning system made a loud noise that made it hard to sleep. The price was not commensurate with the room and the service we received. I would not go […] back to this hotel under any circumstance. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Center of our trip"
I found the front desk to be very slow with helping me check in. Even my friends noticed I was being ignored. The pool party was fun, but they had at least 4 posted security guards in uniform patrolling the pool. It made my friends and I very uncomfortable. Why would they need so many guards? They kept walking over as as we were laying out and one was […] even flirting with a group of girls. It felt like I was a summer camp pool. I couldn't even get all my friends into the party. On the positive side, the drinks were appropriately priced. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Best hotel in University Heights."
My brother, who lives in Normal Heights, was having a family gathering that my wife, kids and I were planning to attend. So, we needed a nice hotel near his house that we could crash at after the get-together. This hotel filled our needs.Genuine Expedia guest review
Finally! A hotel that doesn't have the cookie-cutter look of all the other hotel chains and is very unique, and with some history to it. I loved the vintage feel of Hotel Lafayette and all the charm to it! It was exactly the kind of hotel I was hoping to find and I couldn't be happier that I did. From the amazing pool area to the cute big-band music […] playing when you walk in-I completely fell in love with the place. It had so many quirky details and the front sign and appearance was beautiful. Almost every single worker we talked to was superbly friendly and went above and beyond to have a conversation with us. I loved that you could tell so much of the hotel was kept as close to the original designs as possible-it all added to the charm. It is also pretty conveniently located right by a freeway that made it easy to get just about anywhere within 20 minutes tops. I couldn't get over how friendly the whole staff was, and the whole place was kept Very clean. Great family environment too. I loved that they had a family swim day, and movie nights by the pool! If you love quirky charm, want to be transported back in time, and you're sick of the same old cookie-cutter hotels, this place is for you! We will definitely be back :) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Would be perfect with a little facelift."
We had one of about every kind of room for our family's stay. We were in town for a Navy graduation. The rooms in the main hotel were gorgeous, newly redone. The Suze Suites were great for the families with all of the beds, but a refresh of the rooms would go a long way. The A/C unit in our room could barely keep up. It's probably not usually a problem, […] but with the record heat it was pretty uncomfortable. The poolside suites ended up being fantastic bc we could put the little ones down and hang out poolside in ear shot of them. They even set up tables for us from the restaurant right outside our room. The whole place makes you feel like you are in the Great Gatsy setting. We had a great time overall. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Unique but tired"
It's an old hotel and the room felt flophouse-ish. As soon as I opened the door to the room the synthetic floral, old lady perfume scent overwhelmed me. It was pervasive and persistent. I wouldn't stay there again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"A pleasant stay at the LaFayette"
The pool is amazing, the cleaning crew will wake you up systematically early AM if you don't put the no disturb sign on. They will not systematically change the bed sheets or replace the shampoo and shower gel samples. odd! Rooms in the Manor wing are very noisy if you are on the street side (traffic/road noise). I asked the first night to be transfered […] pool side which was denied. I asked to another front desk attendant the next day to be transfered to a court side room (still in the Manor wing) and I immediately got a new room, very quiet this time. I had elected the $99/night room option. The food at the hotel cafe/bistro was good, the service - although friendly - slow and non focused. I would return to the LaFayette vacationing with my family and would select the pool side rooms for $159/night. I liked the oldies music playing in the lobby and the convenience of the parking garage (free). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Lots of character!"
I originally booked this hotel because of the price and room arrangement. What I got was even better than expected. My daughter had her own bunk bed, bathroom, and t.v. We had our own as well separated by french doors. The hotel is so unique with a very retro 50's, 60's vibe. When we checked in we were on the 2nd floor. Due to my husbands health conditions […] we needed a bottom floor. Within just a few minutes we were unpacking in a bottom floor suite. The staff members are awesome and our room was sparkling clean every day! Thank you for the awesome stay!!! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Tarzan Swam here and Doo Wop Lives Here!"
I never heard of The Lafayette Hotel and Swim Club, but I'm thrilled I found it! Although not downtown, its a gem. Johnny Weissmuller, the original Tarzan designed the swimming pool in the 1940s. On weekends the hotel hosts pool parties replete with a DJ spinning swinging dance tunes and pretty ladies. The hotel has an Art Deco look and the sounds are […] mostly from the fabulous fifties. For $4.50 round trip, catch the #15 bus out front to the Gaslamp district and save $20 to $30 on parking. Parking downtown or most anywhere except the beaches is next to impossible for free. The Lafayette bungalows face in to the pool, neat choice if you can get one. The hotel is in The Boulevard section of San Diego, one mile from the San Diego Zoo and about the same from Highway 8. "Very classy hotel"
The Hotel itself was very classy and beautiful with great service. The only problem we had is that on Sat, Sun, and Mon they close the pool from 1-5:30 for an adult pool party. We stayed here because the pool looked SO amazing (and it was) but my kids barely used it :-(Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Charming Hotel with lots of character. It is not your typical cookie cutter hotel. Lafayette is clean and well maintained. The staff are friendly and helpful. The restaurant on the main floor had great food at reasonable prices and the pool was awesome. We stayed for 4 days and really enjoyed our time here. Be sure to check out the photos and articles […] about the hotels history in the lobby and on the lower level by elevator. As well as the life size checkers game to the left of the pool. Pool was packed with non-hotel guests so we waited until it cleared out after 4:00PM. Had a room right off the pool, but music comes on a bit early and loud!! However, nice accommodations, nice lobby w coffee, nice pool for the kids. also loved the room with the bunk beds and chalk board! Kids loved it!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This is our 6th stay at this hotel. we have watched it go from kind of "funky" to a very nice place. Rooms are remodeled, so they are cleaner and fresher than before. This is not a place from someone who is used to alot of amenities, however. Housekeeping still forgets to give you more than a single pod for you coffee, in a two queen bed room. In the […] summer they have weekend "pool parties", where the public pays a fee to use the pool, there is a DJ and bar outside and lots of noise,so if you are planning to relax by the pool this would not be the time for that. During the week is much quieter, or if you are in the mood for a pool party it's perfect This visit was our worst experience, we were placed at the stairway/elevator exit, there were people running up and downstairs, a couple having a knock down drag out fight with screaming, until security came and took care of it, unfortunately that went on from 1:00 to 3:00 AM. My advise: NEVER let them put in that room. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Hotel was a $20 cab ride from downtown. Room itself was very basic but clean, however a no frills basic room, room I had backed onto the hallway ice machine so room was very loud. Lobby and pool area were very nice, coffee in the AM was also nice. Bar area again very basic no frills, bar staff polite but not overtly friendly. The area has a Denny's […] and a Mc Donaldds next door but the area did not seem like it was very safe to be walking at night. Bar / Restuarant adjectant to hotel was very nice with quality food. "Doubles as Hipster Party Venue"
The most noteworthy thing about the Lafayette is that at 1 PM every day it opens the pool, pool deck and bar to the locals. Those locals are largely 20-something bikini and board-short-clad hipsters. Unless you will fit in with the pool party crowd, I recommend staying on the 2nd floor, as the first floor is inundated with dancing, drinking revelers […] (even on a Monday at 3 PM). The party seems to go on until about dinnertime, and then the pool area is taken over by families with lots of creaming, frolicking children who play in the pool. Just information to bear in mind if you are thinking you might take a dip in the pool anytime after 1 PM. The hotel is rather old and that shows in the quality of the rooms, bathrooms and lack of elevators (which makes baggage handling a bit taxing). The room was fine, albeit, lacking in a desk or chair to use for work. It was challenging to get work done while standing at the bureau/TV stand, where the outlets are located. All that said, I enjoyed my stay once I understood the parameters. The food was very good in the bar -- and plentiful. Appetizers are gigantic, so order sparingly. "Mostly Good....lacking a few essentials"
Aside from the ridiculous hotel security that will not even allow you to sit on the stoop of your bungalow (they acted like we were truant teenagers when in fact we were 40 somethings trying to enjoy the night air. We rented a bungalow which was very charming, but the kitchenette was very poorly stocked. There was 1tiny frying pan that would only cook […] one egg at a time and a tiny pot. The kitchenette did not have soap, towels, sponge, bottle opener, wine opener or cooking utensils. We had a great stove and refrigerator, but no way to really cook effectively. I actually had to go buy a pan and some cooking utensils as we were there for 3 nights. The pool was great and the hotel staff very friendly. Overall we had a good time and I would go back (just not in a bungalow, you may as well eat out since you can't cook with the pooly stocked kitchen). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
This place was a big letdown. The lobby, facilities, grounds, pool area, rooms, etc. we're great; clean, well designed, overall nice place. Their service and integrity is another story. On their website and on a card left in the room, they say priority is given to guests when it comes to poolside chairs. Since the pool is open to the public during peak […] hours ($20/pop), if you're a guest and can't find a chair, you can make a non-guest move. We found this not to be the case at all, as the hotel would/did not enforce it. In fact, another guest actually made me give-up my chair, saying it was 'reserved' and was backed by security who made me move! When I brought a chair out from the room, I was told this was not allowed. This place has a lot of potential, but I do not recommend staying here. Stay somewhere else and pay $20 to use the pool if you really want to check this place out. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
