Good points: friendly, well-informed staff; clean and well-run hotel. Bad points: on the very edge of the run-down and unpleasant Tenderloin area so north and east towards Union Square OK but don't go south and west from the hotel; hotel's only restaurant Ponzu expensive and with very restricted menu, though beef was good; room service meal took 45 minutes to arrive; valet parking not worth the money - park it yourself in multi-story next door!

Over the Thanksgiving weekend my family, including two late-teen girls, visited San Francisco and stayed at the Serrano Hotel for the second time. This is our second trip to the city and thought it would be fun to try a new hotel. After a bit of research on other hotels it was clear that we would be back at the Serrano. Other comparably priced hotels seemed to be nothing more than a fancy lobby with non-descript, generic rooms. Not much of a get-away. Nothing compares to the Serrano! Starting with the courteous staff and beautiful lobby and extending to the room filled with character and comfy beds. When we requested extra towels and pillows they were brought to us within 5 minutes! Now that's service. Don't worry about the less than desirable neighborhood out the back door. Many of the big name hotels are right there as well. There's no escaping it in tourist areas simply don't walk in that area. If you are looking for a real get-away the Serrano is for you!

The doormen, front desk staff, maids, and servers at the restaurant were all excellent. I was in town to run a marathon, so I was always very casually dressed in sneakers, yet the staff was just as sweet to me as the other guests. Free wine reception every evening. Board games to play in the lobby or up in your room. My room was not huge, but it was very pretty and had everything I needed. The restaurant was marvelous. Location is spectacular. A couple of blocks to Union Square, the Market shopping district, and 15-20 min walk to the water. Worth the money.

I stayed at the Drake after my stay here an d much preferred the Serrano. It has a fun old lobby that is grand in it's look, but still on a human scale, it felt very comfortable clubby feel. The room was small and well appointed, Aveda products, leopard pattern robes, wine glasses in the room a safe, old and a little bang up, but no were near like the drake which seemed pasted together and run on a show string. I liked it here, my 14th floor room looked over a parking lot, and behind the financial district, the staff was lovely. And the deal I got on Hotels.com was unbelievable. Would definitely stay here again.

I got a great deal on this hotel. We picked it for it's unusual decor and character and that it offered free wireless internet. The hotel is very clean and the staff is very friendly. They have free coffee, tea, and hot chocolate every morning which is great. The hotel is on the border of the Tenderloin neighborhood which is not a good neighborhood. If you walk the wrong direction then you're right there. It's about a 5 block walk to the bus lines and the BART. The room was very small. I know it's San Francisco and things are smaller. It wasn't unbearably small but only two drawers for clothes. The bed was average comfort. The pillows were all feathers and VERY uncomfortable. I woke up constantly and had bad back aches. I would recommend bringing your own pillows.

If you book a junior suit expecting to use the couch be aware that when unfolded it bloks the way to the bathroom. So you have to step on the bad with a sleeping person in it (in our case our 10 y.o. son) if you get up to the bathroom at night for example... Not the best solution you would expect for this price.

I was curious to stay at the Serrano; I'd noticed the lobby on a prior trip and thought the rooms must be quite sumptuous. Turns out the room was pretty small (corner room) and a little hard to navigate around. Our view was blah but the bed was really comfortable. Noise-wise, it was pretty quiet most of the time, except for a howling dog one night and a very large, loud family conversing at 7am on the last morning. Overall, it was somewhat cramped for the two of us. The Serrano is in the Tenderloin, two blocks from Union Square. You have to navigate through a surprising amount of unpleasant smells to get anywhere on foot from there. Not the hotels fault but worth mentioning.
