see all hotels in San Francisco"Convenient to the Warfield"
We found the Metropolis to be very nice, and convenient to the Warfield if you are going to a show. Just around the corner. Sure, the neighborhood isn't the best, but we never felt unsafe in or around the hotel. Parking is $30, but that's typical of SF. The lot is right there, so also very convenient at least. We found the room to be nice. Not special, […] but had the amenities we'd expect from a lower-priced option in the area. Read more

"Freezing and Dingy"
Not worth the price paid. The lobby makes you believe it is a swank boutique hotel...until you get to the rooms. No central heating or AC. and it looks like a hostel converted into a lowgrade motel.

"Bed Bugs"
My girlfriend and I stayed in the hotel for one night, the next morning we had bed bug bites all over us! All our stuff, cloth, luggage, etc were infested with bed bugs. We had to pay for our own laundry to clean out the bed bugs. In addition staff members weren't very compliant with our needs during the incident. This incident completely ruined our […] trip to San Francisco. Read more

"So close to being great!"
and by 'so close' I literally mean a single city block. This is a lovely old building that's been refurbished and decorated with an eye to detail- however, the street out front is the primary route of travel to the less savory neighborhood up the street. I didn't feel at all unsafe, but the NOISE and screaming and crashing and sirens and arguing travel […] right through the windows and make for a very poor night's sleep. It's sad that they can't soundproof more because this is a lovely hotel. Read more
"Crack Head Central - Behind the Front Desk too!"
The hotel itself is decent for the price but everything else needs an overhaul. There was no communication with the front desk everytime I tried talking with them. It didn't matter who was back there. Also, the front desk never had the right answers for me. Watch out for all the crack heads outside.
"hotel metropolis"
This hotel is in a good location very close to almost everything.. But a little high in price..
"Hotel Metropolis, San Francisco"
Very unpleasant place inside and outside
"Great hotel at a good price"
The surrounding neighborhood looks a little iffy but that doesn't seem to be the case. The hotel is comfortable and clean. It is close to everything and a pleasant place to stay.
"hotel metropolis. most comfortable bed ever!"
The staff was very accommodating and recommended restaurant.ts and clubs that were just what we were looking for....the only negative was the homeless campers around the hotel ..if .only the hotel was one block north it wouldnt have been an issue...the rooms were quiet clean and the beds and linens heavenly

"Nice"
Parking was $32 per night. Doesn't have breakfast. But a very nice hotel. Clean room, good interior, comfortable bed.
"Hotel Metropolis: Close to shopping & Union Square"
My wife and I recently booked a night in the Hotel Metropolis. On the plus side: the hotel is walking distance to shopping, Union Square and Marines Memorial Theater. It also had excellent morning coffee in the comfortable library. On the down side: the neighborhood is run-down, the rooms are small, and the traffic can be loud. We didn't have any problems...other […] than a number of pan-handlers. On the whole, the benefits outweigh the downsides and we would recommend this as a convenient, affordable stay in SF. Read more
"Great hotel, location n price"
First time staying at this place n loved it, comfortable n clean. Rude clerk though, didn't even say hi or even tried to be friendly. Just a jerk. Would stay again regardless of this grouchy man.
"Great ecletic hotel"
Great referbished hotel. Very eclectic. Similar to older hotels in New York, that have been completely redone. Very comfortable, clean and value priced. The neighborhood is just on the fringe of the tenderloin, however within walking distance to many attractions and fine restaurants.
"Hotel Metropolis in the Tenderloin Area"
Sure the area isn't great - however, the hotel is our favorite! Everything is adequate here. The rooms are smallish but clean & sufficient - as we didn't holiday in our room - central location for all the fun areas of SF - Valet parking is at or below SF's prices. All positive comments. If you need to hear a negative - well let's see...there is only […] one elevator, so it can be a bit crowded at times. Read more

"Bad service."
I reserved two rooms with 2 double beds in each room, but when I arrived they said all they had was one room with 2 double beds and the other was a single king bed. They said they were unable to do anything because the rooms were already paid for even though they had the wrong room. Also the constantly blamed us for smoking and running around. When […] none of us smoke and the room 5 doors down were having like a party in their but they were all females so special treatment by security i guess Read more
"Bad Neighborhood/Tiny Rooms"
I would not recommend this hotel. Although it says it's in Union Square, it is actually in the Tenderloin neighborhood aka "Skid Row". Groups of people congregate outside of the hotel who are drunk and on drugs and a bit intimidating. The room was teeny tiny - almost claustrophobic. You could not control the temperature of the room either, so it was […] 100 degrees in there and we had no way of cooling it down. All in all, too expensive for the quality. Read more
"On the fringe"
Don't stay here if you are a woman traveling alone. Fringe neighborhood. Can't open the windows if you are on a low floor. No A/C. A fan helped with the temp but it can't correct the people that congregate on each side of the building. Do not stay here alone if you are a single woman that needs to leave the building.
"Hotel Metropolis in San Francisco"
Great location just a block from Powell Street BART station combined with a professional and friendly staff. Our room had comfortable beds, mini fridge, coffee maker, large LCD TV, and a very decent size bathroom (with a shower head high enough so you didn't have to stoop under it!). The only real drawback was an apparent lack of AC making the room […] a bit on the warm side. Though the window could be raised about 6 inches, it wasn't enough to get a decent breeze into the room. "small but nice"
small room but clean and nice. close to bus and union scquare, 10-15 min walk to Mascone conference center. no AC so slept with window open -bad as street noice from MUNI and occational sirens loud. people (?homeless or just drunk) congregate outside hotel but dont hassel you, most hotels have this i think from what i saw of the area
"CLUMP OF HAIR"
When you get back to your room at 3AM all you want to do is sleep, but when you pull down the sheets and discover a huge clump of hair stuck to them you put aside the sleepiness and have to complain. I went to the lobby and the manager that was on site was pretty livid about the clump of hair and he moved me to another room. He was going to try to comp […] my room for the night, but it was difficult since I booked through this site and not the hotel's website. All in all the staff seemed friendly and the rooms were neither great nor terrible, but a place to put your head down for the night. The rooms don't have AC and you don't usually need AC in San Francisco, but this was one of the rare occasions in which it would have been nice to have. Read more
"Disappointed"
Generally well maintained, but the mattress was in terrible condition, and gave me a backache. I asked for another room, and the response was that all the rooms were pretty much the same!!
"Good location, bad block"
The hotel was modest, and clean. Overall the location was good, except for the actual block. There were several homeless people on the block who were aggressive. I would warn single women.

"Bed bugs and junkies"
This hotel is on the fringe of the Tenderloin neighborhood. It is surrounded by street people, and smells like urine (and worse) when you walk out in the morning. There is no air conditioning in the building or rooms. The bath and bed linens are worn and discolored. My room was on the 6th floor and my reservation was for four nights. On the second day […] of my stay I noticed a few red welts on my upper chest; by the third day I was covered with itchy red bites on my arms and hands. I should have known better than to stay in this location. Avoid at all costs. Read more
"Single worst customerservice experience of my life"
Surely customer service has become worse and worse as people have been replaced with playbooks in response to issues -- and that general decline is reflected everywhere, making the sincerity of statements like "We sincerely appreciate your business," not only hollow, but almost mocking. But without going into detail, let's just say that what would […] simply have been an unfortunate experience and could have been easily remedied should the management and front desk personnel had worried more about solving the problem than protecting their jobs, was blown up to a level of disaster by their inability to handle the issue. I was hung up on without being allowed to speak more than two words -- TWICE -- before I was even allowed to speak to a manager, then was treated with incredible hostility when I requested the slightest accommodation for their mistake (an accommodation that wasn't anything more than requesting a late checkout since I was deprived of sleep by their staff, then a further hour of sleep because of their bumbling and poor handling of the situation). It left me feeling as if I'd paid for the cheapest room available in a roadside motel in some forgotten place. I would have expected treatment like this if I were in some dive motel in Tijuana. The people running this hotel have no interest in anything more than taking your money, nor do they bother to pretend otherwise. (I want to note, too, that their mishandling of the situation wasn't the only reason I say they have poor customer service. The only other interaction I had with them, at check-in, also resulted two other medium-sized errors on their part, so it wasn't an isolated incident, but a pattern as far as I can tell.) San Francisco is filled with other places to stay. I'd only stay here again if the other choice was bedbugs or the street. Read more
"Metropis, San Francisco"
Dangerous location!!! Be prepared to defend yourself!! We booked this hotel because it said it was a block from Union Square-arrived & there was someone snorting cocaine or something by the front door. Numerous drug addicted & homeless in this location. We did not stay but found a different hotel.
"Hiding at the dodgy end of Mason Street"
If you're looking for a pretty affordable hotel close to Union Square and walking distance from pretty much anywhere fun (depending on how much you like to walk) as well as a BART station, this is a great hotel. It's nothing fancy in terms of amenities, but the hotel staff was incredibly accommodating. I had an issue with a drunk "neighbor" in the room […] next to me and the staff responded quickly and resolved the issue with a minimum of drama. The hotel IS on a kind of dodgy end of the street, and you'll encounter some interesting smells and a few homeless folks, but none of them bothered me at all and I never felt like I was in danger. Inside, the hotel is clean and neat, and the little restaurant next door has good service at the bar and friendly staff. I ended up staying an extra night, and even though there were three conventions in town and they were juggling rooms and guests, and pushing some pretty quick housekeeping deadlines, the front desk folks were super nice and didn't hesitate to book my extra night. I would definitely stay here again. Read more

"Hotel Metropolis"
The hotel lobby was very nice. The rooms a little bit smaller, but conventional and perfect for two. Convenient location as it is walking distance from Union Square and they have valet parking onsite, with a fee of course. Overall satisfied and would stay here again.
"Hotel Metropolis"
The surrounding neighborhood of the hotel was awful. I was afraid to walk outside after 6pm.

"Bad Neighborhood"
I did not realize that this hotel is near or at ground zero for skid row. There are screaming bums and hookers right outside the door. Also the 30 dollar a day parking seems a bit much. The Wifi was free and great. Next time we will stay closer to the marina or up on Van Ness to avoid the bums.
"metropilis in san francisco"
do not stay in this hotel apparently there is a new soup kitchen that has been constucted right next to the hotel which borders on the tenderloin area (hookers and crack heads) the noise all day was loud from the street and it was vulgar, got to the hotel @ 3;30 am and could not checkin because the computer was going thru a reboot? the rooms were clean […] but the hotel is in a very bad area and i had to step over many street people during my stay. not my idea of a vacation spot! 1 response by Hotel Metropolis"The Price is Right...but be picky!"
The hotel is close to BART/MUNI and walking distance to Union Sq. and the Theatre district, but, if you stay on a lower floor, don't expect a quiet night (the surrounding neighborhood is LOUD all night!) Rooms facing the parking lot are somewhat quieter. The wine reception is nice, but the coffee isn't out very long in the morning-and FarmerJohn, the […] rest. on the first floor, requires reservations and still a wait. The beds need to be updated-extremely uncomfortable and out of shape.Great showers, decent towels, in-room fridge/coffee OK. For a low-cost, "don't stay in the room much" hotel, this is the ticket-but, avoid the parking charges and lower floor rooms-Pleasant staff, clean rooms-good value. Read more

"Hotel Metropolis SF"
The neighborhood leaves a lot to be desired and the parking lot that is affiliated with the hotel have some very rude people running it. The hotel staff was friendly and the room was clean but I will not stay there again.
"Not the Hotel's fault"
Hotel was clean, located next to Union Square. Staff was friendly and professional. Parking service was a breeze. It does lie on the wrong side of Mason Street, which really does separate the Tenderloin District from the rest of the city. Homeless and the deranged wonder in front and around this hotel all day and night. It certainly is not the hotel's […] fault for this problem. If you are looking for a place to crash near Union Square after a long day of sightseeing, book it. If you looking for Spa services and a view, try somewhere else. Read more
"Great location"
We just stayed 2 nights and were quite pleased with everything. We usually stay at a hotel about a block away. We've talked about trying other places and the price was right to make that happen. This hotel is an easy walk to Union Square and other great shopping. We arrived early, they did have a room for us but did say that its location would be noisy. […] We waited for about an hour and a much better room was available. When they heard this was for our anniversary they upgraded our room for us. The room was clean and nice but the bathroom was small. There are larger bathrooms available. The lobby is nicely done in a modern theme and the rooms follow the same theme. The hotel staff was incredibly nice and helpful. In fact, they remembered my name hours later after hearing it only once. The indigenous population just outside the hotel can be annoying but we never felt threatened. All in all this is a nice hotel that is reasonably priced. Parking was easy and on par with what garages and other hotels charge. The location is convenient and with in walking distance to a multitude activities. We wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Hotel Metropolis again and if you don't expect a 5 star hotel you shouldn't be disappointed Read more
"Hotel Meteropilis in SF"
The hotel staff were cordial and helpful, and the room was clean and queen beds comfortable. The big drawback is that the hotel is in a seedy part of San Francisco, and there were plenty of vagrants and street people nearby.
"Hotel Metropolis - hint, the name implies NOISE"
The hotel in and of itself was fine. It's a boutique, meaning it's a converted building. The rooms are small (though not NYC small) and the walls are thin. The room was clean, though it took a while to figure out that the reason none of the lights were working was that they weren't even plugged in. On the surface, there's nothing terrible about the […] place given the price. We were just looking for a bed to sleep on. HOWEVER, the noise was unbelievable. The sirens (is it on a hospital route?) competed with the loud drunks all through the wee hours. Not a restful sleep. Earplugs may have helped if that's your thing. Read more
"worst servive EVER"
As we walked onto the lobby after going for night we put our car in the hotel vallet. When walking back in we were not greeted by the hotel manager instead we were insulted. The hotel manager said "its late u better not make a lot of noise" as we responded back with we r going to bed why would u say such a thing, he got irate and stood in the elevator […] door not allowing us to go up to our room. We showed him our room keys and he was demanding to know which room we were in. The conversation got even more escalated. He was out of line in many many ways. We are paying good money to stay in that hotel and do not deserve to be treated with disrespect and discriminated against. He is obviously prejudice against black people. He didn't say that to the white couple who walked in just before us. We were dressed nice, clean cut n drive a BMW. No rif raft here. I would never give my money to a company that hires these type of people. Nor would I ever recommend any one to stay here. Worst treatment I have received from a so called 3 star hotel. There are many nice hotels in the area. Spare yourself the disrespect n don't stay here. Read more
