I liked the hotel from a location perspective. I did not have a good view although we were in the 11 th floor. Convenient located for a 1 night stay , but rooms too small for family of more then 2 people. Did not use room service but they offer free coffee milk fruits etcfree wifi was also a perk.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location / Nice Hotel"
We stay at this hotel every time we come to San Francisco, which is least 3 times per year. The location is ideal to all public transportation and shopping, the rooms are very clean and comfortable. The addition of small refrigerators has made the hotel more attractive. The staff are friendly and accommodating. Finally, The tour desk in the lobby is […] a great source for tickets, attractions, and other services for guests. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Noisy part of town. Severe homeless problem"
This hotel is old style charm. Some people might really like this but I wasn't one of them. First, there isn't any air conditioning. You could open a window but there's no way you would get any sleep cause of the noisy city streets and cable car right outside. There is a ceiling fan that helps a bit. No coffee maker in the room, but they did have some […] in the lobby. Although they were out of it when I went for my second cup. The front desk people and bellman were really nice and helpful. Unfortunately San Francisco has an extremely large homeless population that hangs around this part of town and waits for people coming out of the hotel. It was quite disturbing! I'd stay closer to the Fisherman's Wharf area . Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good Hotel- great location"
I really liked this hotel- the staff was friendly and helpful. Someone was smoking on the floor and the hallway smelled really bad. I mentioned it to one of the staff and they had it back to normal in about 30 minutes. It's in a great location and they have an easy shuttle ride to/from the airport. I'll stay there again!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Value, Great Location"
Stayed there a week to help my daughter find an apartment in San Francisco. The hotel was older but clean and well kept. Staff was friendly and went out to their way to offer suggestions and tours. Room was small, twin beds were small, and no air conditioning (not needed). Sort of like a small European hotel. But really no surprises and great location. […] I'm sure we'll be there again if the price is right. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Location is the best if you are a shopper! The purpose of our trip was to go to a SF Giants baseball game and the ballpark is a short walk from there. We've stayed at the Chancellor before and love it! One note...if you are driving into the city, be sure to curb your tires, even when you are pulling into valet. You will be given a ticket!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location, very comfortable stay"
Really enjoyed the hotel, and it was in a great location and easily accessible to the places I needed to be. I appreciated that there was a real hair dryer (not the mini ones some hotels provide), and that there was ample room with seating, closets, etc. The one potential disadvantage is that there is minimal counter space within the bathroom, but […] that is a very minor consideration. But everything was very clean, and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

My husband & I were in town for a conference. We chose this hotel because of the location & price. It was very nice to be close to shopping, restaurants & public transportation. "stayed during 25th Aniversery"
Spent 3 nites during our 25th Anniversery this week, considering all things, price, location, room area, Westin, Drake, Fairmont, Hilton, Mark Hopkins didn't make sense for us on this trip. We.met mostly International travelers, New Zealand, London, Brazil, Australia. We all found a good price on Expedia for this Union Square location that is the best […] area to stay in SF. Staff was great, Bartender Rory was a good dude, Doorman Oliver and Front desk were professional & courteous at all times. Just a wonderful experience in SF with Chancellor Hotel being part of the plan and received the level of service we expected. Our room was 3rd floor facing Powell, we enjoyed listening to the sounds of the cable car bell ringing and when not in mood for noise, just shut the window. Will be back again soon. "Great location and friendly stagg"
overall we are very happy about this hotel, the location was great, free coffee, water, and cookie in the morning. You cannot ask for more with this price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It is right on the cablecar line on Powell Street. VERY noisy, but I liked the ambiance. Every evening I could hear the spontaneous music from Union Square---bag pipes on Mon and Tues, trumpeter the rest of the days. None of them were very good, but they were not awful either , so I opened my window to listen. No AC, so ya gotta open a window for a […] ir. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Very nice, always love to spend time in SF. Don't miss the cable car to the Buena Vista for Irish coffee.Genuine Expedia guest review
Yes I will confirm all the previous reviews.. The room was small.. We stayed on the 2nd floor and yes much noise, but my husband and I travel with a noise maker for the lull of "white noise" to drown out noise L O L! Steps out the front door the trolley! "At Union Square so close to many things."
This is an old, updated hotel. It was clean and quaint. We chose this hotel because of its location. We wanted our friends who had never been to San Francisco to have the downtown experience. "Middle of City"
Great Location. Easy access to city transportation. Only major complaint was no air conditioning and hot nights. Minor complaints are blinking light across street required closed drapes which warmed up room even more.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Old City Charm"
Still has that charm. Staff happy to see you. The in house magic parlor is a delight and being small and intimate makes one feel part of the city. Great for that get away or relaxing after business. Rory the bar keep, one of the rare old breed that actually listens to you stories from past trips to San francisco.Genuine Expedia guest review
"An affordable Union Square location"
The room was average-sized but adequate. The desk in the room was a helpful place to get work done. The bathroom was small and fixtures were old. Elevators were small. The location on Union Square was a major plus especially at the price charged.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Nice for a short getaway"
My husband and I stayed at The Chancellor for 2 nights on our "baby moon." The hotel is very conveniently located near the heart of Union Square and a 15 minute walk from Fisherman's Wharf. The room was much smaller than I expected, however, I live in Las Vegas and am used to larger hotel rooms. We didn't spend much time in the room so it was ok. "Convenient location and fairly priced"
The staff at the hotel was excellent. We ate breakfast there and really enjoyed the buttermilk pancakes. We were able to walk to and from the Giants game - it was about 1.5 miles each way and relatively flat. The only downfall is that the room was rather small. We would go back.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Ageing (somewhat gracefully) in a great location"
I did enjoy my stay at the Chancellor Hotel recently when in town for a conference. The location was great - it's in the Union Square area and the Hyde-Powell cable car runs right next to it, and it was an easy 10 min walk to the conference center. Also it's right next to Sears Fine Foods which is a great place for breakfast, and of course lots of shopping […] in the area. The staff were great, and efficient. I liked that they provided cold water (flavored with lemon or cucumber) in the lobby, as well as cookies. Coffee and tea are also available in the lobby. The hotel itself is old but fairly well-maintained: the rooms are small but comfortable, although my queen sized bed was a too firm for my liking and a bit small for 2 to share. There is also no air-conditioning in the room which got a little uncomfortable on the warmer days during our stay. That said, it provided overall good value for a great location. "Very comfortable with great hospitality"
The Chancellor had everything we needed, at a reasonable rate. The staff were so cordial and helpful, it made us feel like true guests. The room was small-ish, but fine to move around in, and very nicely furnished. Great, comfortable bed and plush bedding. "Cozy but nice"
Location was great, and hotel parking is right around the corner (20 min. drop-off is available in front of the hotel). Definitely cozy by modern standards, but it ads to its historic feel. Hotel was comfortable and clean, although due for a renovation. Superb concierge. Great location, good value for the price.Genuine Expedia guest review
Great location: but the noise in the room from the busy street was very disturbing. I could not sleep since I am a light sleeper and the noise from the street was going all night as this happens to be in union square. The hotel has to consider improving the sound proofing of the rooms.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Can't wait to stay here again..."
This was a charming hotel with a friendly, helpful staff. The bonus was that it is right there on Union Square. Nothing seemed too far away to walk to or take public transportation (i.e. a cable car or Muni bus). We plan on staying here again, next time we are in San Francisco.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Very good experience!"
The location great!, the amenities in the room very good!. Friendly Staff, the paint in the room 1509 was ok but had some bubbles ... And the water pressure got lost some time in the shower.. The linen are great, pillows, the bed very comfortable , even with a small room.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Convenient yet Affordable"
I only stayed there for ONE night. It was a pleasant experience. I did not have many needs and that I believe played a role in my opinion. Nonetheless the staff was friendly and helpful.I Only one issue is the road noise, even after the windows were shut.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great for business travelers and others"
I stayed here while visiting San Francisco and environs for business. It proved to be an excellent home away from home, for the most part. The location was great. The room and public spaces of the hotel were clean and the amenities in the bathroom were decent quality. I also was pleased to have free wifi--I have stayed at comparable hotels that charge […] for this, which is such a rip off. Free wifi is essential for business travelers and really anyone. The staff were friendly and helpful, and helped me navigate and find restaurants. However, one bad experience was that one of the doormen hailed a town car after several minutes of no empty cabs. The driver charged me $30 for a ride that should have cost $7. At least the man behind the front desk who I told later was apologetic and agreed that shouldn't have happened. Other drawbacks: the guests next door were rather noisy and the walls were thin. Also, the mini refrigerator was very loud and I had to unplug it at night, thereby rendering it useless as a refrigerator, so not much point in having it. I also wish there had been a coffeemaker in the room, although there was coffee in the lobby (which I didn't discover until my 4th day there) and plenty of coffee shops nearby. The safe was too small for my laptop although at least nothing happened to it. Overall, though, I had a good experience here and would recommend it. I also got a really good deal through Expedia so I feel like I got a lot of bang for my buck. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"A good place close to the union square."
the good position close to union square. the nice package item including the parking fee. the old building so not clean a little. the small size room but I think it cannot help it inside of downtown. Totally, it is worth staying at this hotel with this price.Genuine Expedia guest review
Lovely european-style hotel adjacent to Union Square. Right on the Cable Car line and 4 blocks from BART, so easy to get around. Rooms in the back are quieter than the front of the hotel, but we were on a top floor and the noise level was fine (typically city noises). Staff were very helpful and pleasant. I would definitely stay there again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

The desk personnel were very friendly & informative, the cold water w/lime & cookies plus a coffee machine in the lobby a nice touch; our room was very comfortable & impeccably clean....we'll definitely come back. "Our San Francisco hotel"
We have stayed at the Chancellor many times now. The location is perfect with great restaurants, Union Square, shops, and most importantly, theatres within walking distance.
