"Sleep at the heart of the San Francisco!"
walking distance is so close to shopping, dining and bars-clubs. Preffer upper level rooms to avoid noise from the street. Free wi-fi is awasome, i used it a lot. Building is old and the rooms are small but for this value its excellent choice.Genuine Expedia guest review
"A historic place with character in San Fransisco"
A splendid place to stay in San Fransisco. Lots of amenities (including complimenatry coffee/tea with cookies and sweets). Very friendly staff allowing us to check in around 8am long before the official time. The location is fabulous with walking access to sightseeing (cable cars, Union Square, Chinatown) restaurants and shopping (from Macy's to Barneys […] in Union square). We much enjoyed our experience at the Chancellor. The rooms are small but comfortable and well appointed and the hotel is located very well. We chose a room away from the street and it was very quiet. Our only complaint was that the bed was on the uncomfortable side.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"family stay...."
cute, great location, staff very friendly....our room faced powell and it was very noisey but it's an old hotel and on a busy street in San Francisco! You cant have it all....I plan on going back for sure!Genuine Expedia guest review
"A touch of historic San Francisco"
As return customers, my adult daughter and I found this comfortable, well-maintained "old lady" to be exactly what we wanted for our visit. We enjoyed our street view, even with its noises, for we wanted to feel the energy of the city. Also, being able to see Union Square from our window was special. A big plus was that we could open the window a crack […] for a little fresh air; it only opens a little bit, so is not a safety hazard. A hotel upgrade from our last visit was that internet access is provided free of charge. And the staff has a wonderful way of making guests feel welcome. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Christmas Trip"
The hotel was very nice. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Questions were answered promptly and efficiently. There was no coffee pot in the room, but coffee was always available in the lobby - fresh I would like to add - along with freshly baked cookies. AND when I say "always" that means 24 hours a day. The restaurant was adorable and food delicious. […] The umbrella was more than welcome. I've never been in a hotel with that accommodation. The location was very convenient for sight seeing tours, trolly, shopping in large department stores, drug stores and dining. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Chancellor"
Great location, great food at the restaurant, great service by the staff, little details that make the difference like cookies at night. The room was very small and somehow uncomfortable.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Very basic hotel"
Disappointed with the hotel overall. The bed was too hard and uncomfortable, the room was stuffy (no air, only fan), the bath tub ceramic was cracked. I was expecting better quality from reviews I read.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great central location at reasonable price"
Excellent access to transit and cable car, and to nearby inexpensive cafes and diners. And Union Square is very pretty at Christmas time. Commute to Financial District only $10 each way and fast. Used the refrigerator for dinner leftovers and the hotel staff kindly warmed them up for my morning breakfast. Good free coffee and apples too.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Convenient to Union Square and Shopping"
This is an older hotel (about 100 years old). The rooms are small but clean and comfortable. The hotel reminded me of European hotels with very small elevators, hallways, rooms, and bathrooms. It has no air conditioning, though that is not usually a problem in San Francisco. The radiator tended to be noisy when heating up and sounded like a large rat […] scratching in the corner when it gurgled at night. The big draws for this hotel are its location to Union Square and shopping and its good rates for the location. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice little hotel close to Union Square"
The hotel was nice, has a parking garage just a block away, close to Union Square. The rooms were a bit small for my taste, but overall not that bad. Used the hotel just to sleep anyways, spent all my time outside checking out attractions.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good hotel for the price and location"
this hotel is in union square - the equivalent of NY's Time Square so to get a hotel in this location there will be a premium on the room rate. The Chancellor has great rates and the rooms are clean. The common areas of the hotel (lobby, bar, hallways, elevators) are dated and worn. The rooms are clean and adequate. There is just a friendly, good hotel. […] It is not a boutique or something that is luxurious, it is a place to stay that is decent. If you are looking to impress someone this isn't it. If you are looking for a good location, good service and a comfortable, friendly clean place to stay it's for you. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great to stay"
It's right in the union square so that was very good, and the pharmacy was right behind it so that was good too, but a bit noisy in the nite, even when the windows are closed. Bath tub was nice too. If I have a chance to stay again I would. The staffs are very helpful as well too.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel in the heart of downtown San Francisco"
Excellent location, about 20 footsteps from Union Sq. Great service, nothing was a problem. Can't wait to stay there again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel in Union Square"
This is a great hotel in the heart of Union Square. It's smaller than some of the large hotels, making it more quaint and the amenities and servie better. Other comments included complaints about a small bathroom - this is true, but it is true of most hotels in SF. However, the room is rather large for the city. I have stayed in more upscale hotels […] with smaller rooms. The Chancellor is an older hotel, so yes it only has two elevators, but we never had a problem using these. Overall we enjoyed our experience at this hotel. If you enjoy a room with a view then be prepared for the street noise, as is expected with any big city. If you don't want the noise, ask for the other side and it is very quiet. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"good location, low quality hotel"
They get you with the good location and low price. The pictures are misleading. The hotel is very rundown and they get you on parking. There is no self parking to speak of so you pretty much have to do the $50/night valet. I thought I had prepaid for everything with the hotel but ended up with an additional $200 bill for the weekend. Would not stay […] here again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Wouldnt change a thing"
The hotel is older, the rooms are small, the beds are somewhat hard, but even with all of those negatives we would stay there again. The hotel staff was the better than any hotel we have ever stayed. They were personable, helpful, and competent. They took care of all of our need immediately. They turned us on to some great places to eat and things to […] see. No matter what time of day or night we were greeted with hot coffee, warm cookies and fresh ice cold water. Be sure to eat at the breakfast place just to the right of the main entrance. "Great location"
If you want to be close to everything on union square then stay here. Loved it, noisy but hey it's on union square and it adds to the atmosphere. Would defiantly stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great value at Union Square"
Great location with a peak of a view of the Union Square Christmas tree out my window. Clean room, good lighting, small bathroom with excellent amenities and very clean, umbrella in room, two suitcase stands, two chairs plus a desk chair, refrigerator, and a dish of candy on the side table. Plenty of good pillows and an extra blanket in the room. The […] hairdryer did not work, but within 5 minutes of my call to the front desk a new one was delivered. Valet parking was exactly as advertised; I called ahead and had no wait at all. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. And the apples and cookies were a welcome treat at the end of the day. I booked the parking package, and felt it was an excellent value, even with the added $11 for valet service. Well worth the price, and truly a bargain for this location! "Good location and quiet"
Stayed during Thanksgiving Weekend, 2012. Good location. Recommend choosing a room in the back so you are not on Powell street. It was very quiet in the back.Genuine Expedia guest review
"good value."
we found the staff very good , the service excellent and the location very central.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Size does matter!"
Wonderful little place with a ton of charm. It was within walking distance of many venues in SanFran including the Moscone Center. The staff at the front desk could not have been more accomodating. The only things I would change about the place would be; (1) to install sleep number mattresses in lieu of pillow tops.. my bed was dredfully soft. (2) the […] shower head height is perfect for shorter people, at 6'-2"., I had to practically get on my knees!.. therefore, I would install "hand held's" shower attachments to suit taller guests. The room was quiet and comfortable. Great little place, nice breakfast, cozy little bar and always coffee and cookies at ther ready! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"great location"
This was a nice hotel. Location is perfect if looking for hotel in Union Square shopping district. Make sure to get parking pkg if offered. The only thing is we were on 15th floor with great view but even in Nov it was hot in the room. They offered to bring up fan if needed but we were ok with window cracked and ceiling fan. LOVED the old fashion tub […] which was deep and long enough to lay down. I would stay here again in cooler months Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"The Chancellor"
A true boutique Grand Hotel built in 1914 next to Union Square in San Francisco. A bargain. The rooms were a little smaller than most, but that was the norm in 1914. Besides they used standard beds back then and now use queen size. Fully up to modern expectations. A desk, a table, an active internet connection. The bathroom was tailored for the room […] and the best feature was a large walk in closet where one could hang and store everything. Full sports bar in the lobby area and great breakfasts served daily. Easy access to all ground transportation, cable car, bus etc.. Wonderful old San Francisco artistic atmosphere. "Only in winter..."
There is no air-conditioning in the room. So even in November I have to have the fan on. Also this means opening the window which will introduce considerable noise from the street - even though I was on 13th floor. Location is great though right next to Union Square.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"OK for a couple or single."
The room was very small. The view was poor. The staff was excellent. The food served in the restaurant was good.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location; accommodating staff."
Hotel is great; very convenient location. If you want a quiet room you need to ask for one in the back as they are on the street of the cable care. Staff was very accomodating and helpful. Would certainly return.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great for visiting the SF city."
This hotel is in an older building and has a lot of character. Its right on Powell Street, in the heart of Union Square in downtown SF, so you walk out of the hotel onto a bustling street. Did not find the street noise as bad and if you want no noise then you probably should not stay at a downtown hotel. Quick walk to the Moscone Center. Powell street […] Bart a block away from hotel and cable car stops right outside the hotel. So transportation is easy. The rooms were on the smaller side, but the ceilings were very high. The Walk in closet was roomy and adequate for storing multiple bags, suitcases. Hotel even provided a umbrella! The bath salts were a nice touch. Some other reviews have complained about the step up to the bathroom, it wasn't an issue in any way. It was clearly marked on the floor and the only possible danger could be stubbing a toe if you forgot the 1 inch height difference between the room floor and bathroom floor. If you are looking for the generic large hotel chain comforts, this hotel probably wont appeal to you. But if you want to try variety, this is a great place. Great location, hotel staff was very accommodating and helpful. The hotel is well kept, beds and linens were very comfortable and the restaurant downstairs serves a good breakfast and lunch. Plenty of dining options a few feet away and all around the hotel. If you want to visit the city, then this is a good place to stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Comfortable and surprisingly quiet"
Ours was only an overnight stay en route to London but we found our room comfortable and surprisingly quiet for such a central location. We appreciated the free Wi-Fi and valet parking. I would particularly commend the helpfulness of the bell-captain.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Recommended hotel near Union Square"
The Chancellor Hotel is a small hotel 4 blocks uphill from the Bart station with a city bus stop 1/2 block away. The hotel has a restaurant and bar. The lobby has cookies, apples, coffee and tea. No coffee makers in the rooms. They was a minifridge in the room. The rooms at the Chancellor are small but functional. The bathroom was especially small […] with limited counter space. There was a step down coming out of the bathroom that I fell from one morning. The bed was very comfortable. I loved the linens, and I rarely say that. There is no a/c but that wasn't an issue when we visited. We had to move the chairs to get to the windows but opening the windows was enough fresh air for us and kept us comfortable. I never heard noise from other rooms and the elevators worked quite quickly. Never really had to wait long for them. Based on the other reviews, I already expected noise. We were on the10th floor on the back side, so away from the street. The view was NOTHING to look at. There was still enough city noise that I walked to the nearby Walgreens and bought some ear plugs which corrected the problem. I'd bring them along if you're a light sleeper or bothered by noise. There was a large walk-in closet with a safe that we used free of charge. The staff at this hotel were very friendly and helpful. Check in and check out was quick. They were extremely helpful in providing directions for the Bart and restaurants. Room Tip: Higher up and back from the street would be quieter. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Not a fancy hotel with all the extras, but perfectly adequate and serviceable for a business traveller. Great location, just a half block from Union Square.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Location"
Great boutique hotel located right in Union Square. It is an old hotel so the room sizes are smaller and a little shop worn. The maid service was a bit below par as they left garbage in the wastebaskets and used cups on tables, etc. Other than that it is a very convenient place to stay in downtown SF.Genuine Expedia guest review

"No Chillin here!"
I was totally shocked to find out that the rooms had no A/C, Yes, no air conditioning! We arrived on a day that was 88 degrees and stayed like that for 2 days, we got a 6 day package and knew that there was nothing that we could do about it so BUYER BEWARE. The room was small and not as nice as stated, the hotel is in need of updating even though they […] say it was updated! Our bathroom was peeling and tub needed repairs. It was noisy being on the street front which I do not recommend, We sweated it out for the time we were there! On a bright note the staff was very accommodating and friendly, the location is great with the Cable car stop 200 ft away and a short several blocks to Pier 30, Fisherman's Wharf and Embarcadero. I would have 2nd thoughts about staying here again unless it was Winter. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Union Square option"
I needed to stay in Union Square, but I was on a limited budget, so this fit the bill. The room was very clean, but small. I felt like I was in Europe due to the tight space. As it's just outside Union Square park, it was very convenient walking around the area.Genuine Expedia guest review
